This restaurant reminds me of a restaurant in its last ditch effort to stay open, which is a shame because their food and presentation are ALWAYS spot on. We started off on a bad note - we went to the Encino Rio location and there was a sign on the door that said the location was permanently closed. So, we went to the West Ave location. I asked for a manager at the West location because I wanted to complain about the website not being updated. Apparently, there was no manager on duty. The server took my phone number and was supposed to call me today - and not surprisingly there was no phone call. There were only four tables occupied when we sat down and we watched the four servers standing around the bar for an excessive amount of time before our drink order was taken. We waited even longer for our drinks to be poured and served. The food was good and the presentation was spot on, as usual. The cleanliness of the restaurant was horrible. These two lights were just above our table. All of the lights looked similar. I sincerely hope they turn it around because their menu is unique and good. read more

I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was terrible. The restaurant wasn't even busy, yet the service and food were both disappointing. Our server spoke so quietly that we could barely hear him. He recommended the $37 platter, and I don't mind paying for a good meal, but this definitely wasn't worth it. The food arrived cold, and to make matters worse, the chicken was undercooked. If you're looking for raw chicken, this is the place. The quesadillas were just as bad. The tortillas were paper-thin, soggy, and honestly gross. Every bite was a disappointment. The entire meal was so bad that I seriously wanted to get up and leave without eating. Amazing Mexican steakhouse with a lively vibe. There is usually mariachis that perform during dinner so call in to confirm. The staff are really knowledgeable and check in on you frequently. We ordered one of the boards that you can select different cuts of meat and various sides. The baked potato was surprisingly good and a highlight of the meal. The meat was delicious. The service and everything else was terrible. We had a party of 7 which meant automatic 20% gratuity which I don't mind if the service was actually good, even fair. But it wasn't. We had to ask about our drinks because only some were brought to the table, when the food came out we were missing items. The "apology" given by our server was so insincere she might as well have rolled her eyes while saying it. Also, in what world is a child lemonade nine dollars?! (Without a single refill). I booked a reservation through open table, a credit card is required to put on file. If you reschedule or cancel/no show with less than 24 hour notice it is a $25 per person fee. We got seated right away even though we were 30 minutes early. Thanks to the nice lady who helped even though she wasn't our server. Presentation on the food was on point. The potato chips they greet you with were so addicting. The water glasses smelled weird though. Food was delicious, service was good but not amazing. Gratuity was automatically included, total came out to $132 all together. Restrooms were absolutely gross for such a nice restaurant. Visited Tu Asador on a Tuesday evening with my partner. We were greeted warmly by the host, who was very friendly and made a great first impression. Our waitress was knowledgeable about the menu and provided detailed recommendations, which we appreciated. I decided on the enchiladas suizas, while my partner opted for the New York strip. There were a few hiccups with our drink orders. I requested a Diet Coke, but it tasted like regular Coke. My partner ordered a ginger ale, but instead, the waitress checked his ID and brought him a shot of Jägermeister--quite unexpected! He also ordered a tamarind lemonade based on the waitress's suggestion but was served cucumber lemonade instead. We suspect a language barrier may have contributed to these mix-ups. As for the food, the enchiladas and steak were both good--no complaints there. Overall, it was a mixed experience. While I'm not sure I'd return, it might be worth a try if you're nearby and in the mood for something different. read more

Haven't had anything here that we didn't enjoy. Every dish has been a hit drinks are good and so is the service. They have breakfast, lunch, & dinner which makes them fit for any time of day. If I had to choose some favorites I'd say the costillitas al tajin, arrachera, & picanha barbacoa definitely have us in a chokehold; we've returned for them countless times & the bone marrow is an amazing addition to anything here, but especially the barbacoa. I was visiting San Antonio and I found myself craving a good steak, but not from fancy restaurant like Ruth's Chris. The front desk at my hotel recommended Tu Asador, which I am glad they did. The staff welcoming and hospitable. I was seated quickly with my drink order taken and chips brought to the table. The service was great throughout my visit (no complaints). The atmosphere was elegant and comfortable all at once. While there aren't any white tablecloths, the resturant would be good for date night as well as family outings. I ordered a glass of the house red and since it was happy hour, I received a free appetizer. Today's was chunks of grilled beef with a tangy bite - all good. I ordered the "Experience" with ribeye (always the best cut in my opinion) and grilled vegetables. The meal was served on a wood cutting board, which added a nice accent to the meal. The meat was cooked well, but did have some tendons (which is not uncommon with ribeye cuts). The veggies were spot on and the quesadillas complimented the meal well. All-in-all, this place scratched my itch. If I actually lived in San Antonio, I would certainly visit this restaurant again and again. read more

Fine, we adjusted. Then we waited over an hour for food while tables around us who arrived later were already eating. After that long wait, we were told they were out of our sides. This should've been communicated when we ordered, not an hour later. The waitress even said she wouldn't want to pay full price if she were us. The "manager" (host) was defensive, took no accountability, and said all they could offer was ONE dessert for a table of six. That was honestly insulting. Food finally came out mid-conversation and was still wrong, so we declined it and paid only for drinks and appetizers. Then we were told conflicting stories--manager blaming the waitress, waitress blaming the restaurant. To top it off, automatic 20% gratuity. We won't be back. I wish this were a better experience. I had heard wonderful things about Tu Asador and was excited to try it. We came at 6pm on a Wednesday. I empathized with our server because it seemed like he had a lot of tables and was all over the restaurant. We started with the chicharrones de bistec and they were lukewarm. It had good flavor but just surprising since they said they cook everything to order. I also ordered my little one's kids meal. He wanted the hot dog. It came out and the skin was crispy but the meat inside was cold when I cut it in half for him. It seems like they made it ahead of time and did a quick reheat. We had to flag down another food runner to get water and drink refills. Our waiter didn't write down our order and that was a sign that we'd be in for some surprises. I got the wrong dish for the arrechera but just kept it because the food took awhile to get out. My mom got a steak, but it was cold and overdone, so we sent that back and it came back 15 minutes later but it was delicious the second time around. I had the arrechera and it was just okay. Very fatty and not the melt in the mouth meat that I've had before when I was in Monterrey. The meat was lukewarm. The Frijoles (beans) were okay but again they were cold. My dad had the NY Strip and it was cooked and seasoned well. Overall, an underwhelming experience for a place that got so much hype and it's on the pricey side. I wouldn't mind paying for a good meal but this wasn't anything to write home about and nothing make me want to come back again. Everything was a la carte even the salsa (1$ for a small ramekin) and tortilla chips ($3 for small bowl). Again the server was friendly, but you could tell he was overwhelmed. Appreciated his efforts. $160 for 3 adults and one child not including any alcohol. We could get a better steak for less elsewhere. Beautiful! Parking has to be the only reason I can't give it five stars because not enough ADA parking spaces. BUT the restaurant in itself it was beautiful! I'm a wheelchair user so I need the space and they had just that. I fit underneath their tables which is always a plus. The food was delicious our waiter was very knowledgeable and attentive. The food is great. It was fresh and lots of flavor. Not a huge fan of the chips, but got a few apps and they were delicious. The sauce on the cauliflower was lick your plate clean sauce. Got several cuts of meat by weight and they were tender, juicy, and bustin with flavor. The stuffed jalapeños were cooked perfectly and they were fresh! The inside was nice and welcoming. But where do we go south? The service. I almost dropped this to two stars. Had to ask several times for ordered times and I did not get my margarita till my meal was pretty much over. The server kept apologizing but that does not make up for bad service when the delay was all on the server, like drinks. At the end of the day I tipped out $40 on a $200 bill (cause otherwise you are shamed) but most venues would do the decent thing and discount items for bad service. We traveled 30 minutes and when we arrived we were told by the server that they no longer offered it. We requested to speak to the manager and a man who claimed to be the "owner" approached and said they no longer offered the dish on their Happy Hour menu. We explained what we were told over the phone by one of his employee and he said he did not care. That will be the last time we set foot in this establishment. In today's economy, as restaurants are closing, one would think that restaurant owners would care more about their patrons. That is not the case here. Go to Lucky Noodle instead. It's right down the street. They have great food and amazing service at a terrific value. read more

We have visited Tu Asador in castle hills on many occasions, some on the whim and more for special occasions as my husband is a fan of their meats, we decided to celebrate his 43rd birthday with our children. I have a toddler who has food aversions and eats a specific diet and we had her food with us and I mentioned this to the waiter before taking the food out and he said " well they let you in so it should be fine" so we proceeded with taking out her container of food from home so she could eat. Then about 10 mins in, we had a assistant manager come up to us stating " he doesn't want to be that guy, but no outside food is allowed" and that "I guess they would allow it to slide this time" but it was not allowed. I explained that we have a child who has sensory food aversions and doesn't eat anything from outside her specific diet and he still was not accommodating, so I basically told him no problem, I would be happy to discuss this with the manager...two seconds later a manger comes to our table and explains they don't allow outside food and drinks ( understandable) it's not like I came with bags of takeout from Olive Garden & Chick fil a, I came with a discreet stainless steel container with her scrambled eggs and some fruit--that's it. She proceeded to tell me that it's policy and that it's a liability issue regarding contamination of food, etc. --blah blah blah. So when they allow service dogs to come in, is that considered sanitary? Or contaminated? What about a breastfeeding mother trying to feed her child by breast or bottle? Is that considered contamination? A liability? A health hazard to society?!? So let me get this straight --those things are "A-ok" but when it comes to the right of feeding my child due to her special needs , I can't do that? So instead of having a memorable dinner with my husband and kids, my husband had to finish his dinner and take my child out to our vehicle so she could eat her food in the car. Thank you so much Tu Asador for the utmost hospitality & understanding. $300.00 down the drain and I will NEVER come back to your establishment. Like most people (I suspect), we came in due to their recent addition of breakfast/brunch menu options. I must say, we've been to plenty of Mexican/Hispanics restaurants, food trucks, etc, but this one does add something new to experience. This place is quite elevated. Dining tables and chairs are cozy but everything has an upscale feel. Outside seating is very nice, a garden effect with heated lamps and hanging lights. Water has bottle service and complimentary home made potato chips to start. We were seated quickly on a Thursday at noon and everyone was friendly, upbeat and attentive. I'd be remiss to not mention their house made salsa picante. It really has more zest and tang then heat but truly delightful and it turns out a little bottle is available for sale- we bought one. Ultimately, ordered the chilaquiles 'divorciados' with eggs- excellent option for trying both their red and green salsa with a pineapple mimosa. And my boyfriend ordered the Tacos Chicharrones (4) with fresh guac, onions, and cilantro. Needless to say, there was no room for dessert as the portions were perfect. read more

Came here for brunch but ended up ordering off the main menu ( starts at 11am). The bar does not open until 11am so that was perfect. Per ordered the beef short ribs and asked for tortillas. The drinks were the Estanzuel (green drink), and the Bustamante (red drink). Both were amazing. The service was top notch. The ambiance was perfect for early lunch with mid to dim lighting.
