I definitely found a gem in Glenwood South that immediately reminded me of the classic diners I grew up with in New Jersey. For readers unfamiliar with Jersey diners: think a no-nonsense, sit-down restaurant serving breakfast all day, great coffee, generous portions, and a menu built around eggs, griddle items, comfort food, and attentive table service. Tucker Street Diner delivers that same spirit--just set in the fashionable Glenwood South neighborhood rather than along a highway. Tucker Street Diner is located within the Smoky Hollow mixed-use development in the Glenwood South area of downtown Raleigh. Smoky Hollow is a large, modern complex featuring retail, restaurants, Class-A office space, structured parking, and residential units. The diner occupies ground-level retail space in the office building at 421 North Harrington Street, right at the corner of the pedestrian promenade along Tucker Street. I was greeted warmly and quickly served a solid, classic diner cup of coffee (likely a medium roast). Even with limited office activity that morning, the diner still had a steady flow of customers. I ordered the chicken-fried steak with two sunny-side-up eggs, home fries, and rye toast. The steak was nicely breaded, and the white gravy--served on a separate plate--was rich and flavorful. This is definitely a cute diner spot with classic menu options. I got the diner jewel and I loved the pancakes, but everything else was just average. I will say the service was great though. Half of my food didn't come out when everyone else's did and even though it took about 2 minutes to get it, they still took all of it off my bill. That's how you do customer service! Northerners who miss the classic diner experience can rejoice! Tucker St is as classic as it gets when it comes to a diner. An extensive menu with options no matter the day or mood. The food itself isn't groundbreaking in any way shape or form so don't go there expecting anything crazy. It's exactly what you'd expect for a good diner so if that's what you're in the mood for, this is the spot to hit. That said, they do have creative options such as the Tucker St burrito which is like a McGriddle in a burrito form! And for the price, you can't complain. Service was great and timely and the ambiance of this place is classic retro diner feel with a modern twist. The new Tucker Street Diner is a nice addition to the popular Smoky Hollow District. Inside it's bright and blue with plenty of space to stretch out in. The menu covers 10 or 12 plastic-laminated pages in classic diner style. Choose from eggs (breakfast served all day) sandwiches, burgers along with some blue plate special. Pretty much everything is under $20 which makes for an affordable meal in this neighborhood. I tried their chicken-fried steak plate which was decent. Medium to largish portion sides (but not huge) and a huge thumbs-up to their classic onion rings which is available as a side. They are still working on their ABC license so you'll have to deal with basic beverages for now. Overall I like what they're doing even though I'm not a huge diner fan. Affordable eats always works for me and Tucker Street Diner is doing a fine job on that measure. read more

I was so disappointed by the taste and quality of the food. I ordered French toast and the bottom was burnt ANDDD they have any flavor. They didn't put butter on the French toast and it was room temp by the time it got to the table, so the butter didn't melt. I really want to like this place--after all, who doesn't love a good diner? I've given it more chances than I probably should, coming back each time hoping something will finally click. The food is... fine. Not bad, but not memorable either--especially when what you're craving is that satisfying, comforting plate that diners are known for. It just never quite delivers. To be fair, I haven't tried breakfast yet, and maybe that's where they shine. The ice cream is definitely a highlight and worth a stop on its own. We stopped in on a whim one day last week for lunch and are so glad we did! The diner is so cute inside and very comfortable booth seating. Bright light streams in from the large windows where you can people watch the Smoky Hollow way! Lots of dogs and people and just beautiful surroundings. My chicken salad sandwich sounds so mundane in print but can I tell you that Tucker Street Diner is using THE BEST rye bread in the United States. I swear - even NYC can't hold a candle to this rye bread. I asked our server where they get it, and she said it comes in a plastic bag with no label, no name! She is just as impressed with the rye bread as I am. My sandwich was delicious and the homemade chips are fantastic. They are truly curled right off the potato and fried so that they arrive warm to you. My husband enjoyed his grilled chicken salad. He is eating healthier these days so no diner food for him last week. He remarked how crisp the greens were and the dressing just right. Our server was a delight. Tucker Street Diner is now open in Smoky Hollow. It feels like you stepped back in time when you enter with the true diner feels. The menu has a good selection, I really liked the blue plate special options. I tried their meatloaf with mashed potatoes and green beans and a lemonade. I thought that the food was good but the wait time was insane and the service was spotty. All of the food was piling up at the window with nobody to run it to the tables. My mom and I finally got our food but my husband had to wait over 15 more minutes to get his omelette then even longer to pay. If you can't visit this location then you can try their other locations: The Shiny Diner in Cary or Peak City Diner in Apex. read more

The diner is beautiful and being a New Yorker I am always looking for a great quality diner. Unfortunately that was not the case this morning. When my husband and I arrived no one was there and right after us a few more people arrived. We had terrible service and our waitress and the other waitresses were too busy talking and laughing instead of doing their jobs. Our food sat on the shelf for 10 minutes before it was brought over to us and my food was cold! Our waitress had asked everyone in there if they wanted their coffee refilled but skipped our table every time. We waited 15 minutes before she even took our order and than once our food was brought out she never came back until I flagged her down wanting boxes to take our food home and she brought the check over and another waitress had to take our card to run it. Also that same waitress who was not our waitress was serving customers while talking on her cell phone. I do believe this diner could be good if they fire their staff and get a new team minus the cook, he was great and my food would have been great if it wasn't cold when I got it. Sadly, we were very excited to come here and it just wasn't good. The service was subpar, the food came out cold/lukewarm and we didn't even get what we ordered. My boyfriends omelet was missing all the meat (and it was a meat-filled omelet according to the menu), we were missing sides that the waitress clearly wrote down but apparently didn't ring in, and then when the food came, the manager or owner didn't even know what he was handing out. The waitress also had no idea what we had ordered and what was missing, and then her and the manager seemed confused when we had said we order other sides. It sucks cause I know this location is new, but I expected it to be better based on the success of their other locations. Overall atmosphere is cute and gives a great diner feel, but that's about it. Well I waited for it to open when I worked in Raleigh and finally got a chance to order something simple. I ordered just French fries with chili. I was expecting to pay under $10 but it came out to $10.83. I'm sure their food is better than what I ordered, however it lacked any sort of seasoning. So yes I can't give this order a good review. We were excited to try this place as we were starving and this was the only restaurant around with no wait. We sat down, ordered waters, and the waitress came back to take our order. I asked her which entree she recommended as I was stuck between 2 options. She became extremely rude and wouldn't answer, just asked me what side I wanted? I said I'm asking which one I should get and she again said fries or onion rings? We were taken back as her entire tone changed and she became extremely disrespectful. She then told us we should leave, to which we did as we were not going to patronize a business that treats customers that way. We will never return back here, and have never experienced such poor service ever before. I regret not bringing the matter to the attention of a manager, but at that point we were ready to get out of there.
