I'm originally from California, and I've been working here for the past 43 days. One of my co worker (nurse) recommended John's Coffee Shop, and I was honestly just looking for something that felt like a real home-cooked meal. I found it. The Food I ordered pancakes and turkey bacon -- simple breakfast, nothing fancy -- but it was done right. * The pancakes were fluffy and perfectly golden. * The turkey bacon was just right -- balanced, flavorful, not overcooked. * Everything tasted fresh and homemade. It gave me that comfort you need when you're working long shifts away from home. The Service This is what truly stood out. The first day I walked in, they were kind -- genuinely kind. The type of kindness you can see in someone's eyes. The second day I came back, the waitress remembered me. She asked if I wanted the same thing. That meant something. When I walked in, they recognized me. In a city as fast as New York, that level of attentiveness is rare. I tipped her $10 just because she remembered my order. That kind of service deserves appreciation. Atmosphere * Clean * Comfortable * Welcoming * Staff is warm and attentive I honestly wish I had found this place sooner. If you're near 823 2nd Avenue in New York and you want a solid, comforting breakfast with excellent service -- this is your spot. It was a fun NYC diner experience. We stay in midtown and our go-to breakfast place is closed on the weekends so we wanted to find a new place. Service was speedy and the coffee was piping hot. Good service, big helpings but not much flavor. I want flavorful hot coffee in a coffee shop with lots of cream choices and John's didn't offer that. The pancakes were very cakey but not sweet and not moist which was a bummer. Ambiance is very NY. Everyone is close together but it didn't feel too loud. read more

My wife and I love a diner, especially when we're traveling, and John's Coffee Shop was a solid choice. We stopped in last year for breakfast and we enjoyed our meal. We wanted a sit-down diner for breakfast and my Yelp search turned up John's. It was a short walk from the hotel and we got a table right away, after the breakfast rush. The server was great. He answered questions and took our order quickly. He did forget my coffee, but I asked another server for it. He was busy making the chocolate shake my granddaughter's ordered to split. They each had a big order of 3 pancakes with strawberries. I chose the tuna melt, which was tasty, but was open-faced with way too much American cheese on top. My friend and I had the buttermilk pancakes at this diner. There was a hair in both of our pancakes. Very disappointed. The man greeting us was very welcoming and kind. However, the woman that took my order was rude once we informed her of the hairs in our pancakes. They did comp both of our pancakes but I will not be going back. Context behind this snipped video: We were filming to see how long it would take our other friend to eat her waffle and if she could finish before us. Classic New York diner that's been there for decades. Quick service, friendly waitresses and waiters so cool '60's interior. Clean. The food is very good. I had their biscuits and gravy and my husband had a western omelette and it was wonderful and very reasonably priced. The coffee was also really good. We will return since we live around the corner. read more

Had to try out my local brunch and coffee spot on 44th before leaving Tudor city and it was a great spot I wish I had opportunities to go back! Friends and I split a bottle of champagne which wasn't too bad compared to most crazy brunch spots around the city. We also got the tots which were amazing and the lemon ricotta pancakes which were so fluffy and delicious! One of the more affordable diner spots in the city with lots of options for everyone. read more

Really good breakfast and coffee. I came during the week to grab my breakfast to go and I had a great experience - the waiter offered me suggestions and I had amazing service. Over the weekend it was much more busy so I'd just recommend that if you want to sit down and eat to account for a long wait. But it's a very conveniently located cafe with a great diner ambiance. On a Saturday, arrived around 10 am and the place was packed. Waited 10 minutes to be sat down. Small quaint place with booths and counter seating. Our waitress took our order quick and in less than 5 minutes the food was served. Order the pulled pork eggs Benedict and it was delicious. Have you ever heard of cannoli-stuffed French toast?? I definitely haven't before I checked out this diner out. The French toast 100% tasted like cannoli. If you're someone who likes thick milkshakes, I would personally skip the milkshakes here. However, that's just a personal preference of mine when it comes to milkshakes and I will say that the milkshake paired super well with the onion rings. The onion rings were perfectly thick. It also came in a good portion size, but I wanted even more. That's how good it was. The service was very quick and friendly. The food came out quick as well. Overall: I went here on a Sunday morning for brunch. It seemed like a popular place - there were several groups waiting in line to be seated. The food was typical diner fare. Everything was fine, but nothing was great. I'd consider going back, but it probably won't be a go-to place for me. The Benedict came with huge portions of pulled pork and the eggs were poached perfectly. Drinks: The coffee was fine but nothing special. The hot coffee came with free refills, but the iced coffee did not. Service: The host was very accommodating of our group of 5. The place was full and had a line outside, but he was creative in getting groups seated. Our waitress seemed quite busy, but she seemed very rushed and wasn't very attentive to us. It took 3 requests to get the proper number of place settings and waters. The entire staff was hustling, but the service quality wasn't great. Value: The subtotal for our two meals with coffee was $51. Portion sizes were large, but that seems expensive for diner food. Atmosphere: The restaurant was lively and the staff were very active. A great coffee shop on 2nd and 44th street , all the standard breakfast items with some fancy specials . I had the cannoli filled French toast which was excellent served with real maple syrup. The coffee was great and they keep refilling . Left full and satisfied at a reasonable price . Highly recommend John's coffee shop and will be returning. read more

French toast is thick, biscuits and gravy are nice consistency, omelets are thin, just perfect for me! Our waitress must have checked in on us 3 times to take our order. Know before you go, peep out the menu, and consider your order. The food comes out quickly so not a place to sit and dwell. There are stools at counter, a few table if 4 and a few tables for 2...not big at all, so ypu could luck out and be seated immediately or be put on the waiting list to wait outside on the sidewalk. 4 stars because overall quality of food items and servings for the price is very good. They offered their regular menu and a weekend brunch menu. Mimosa $8 with fresh oj. For the name being John's Coffee, the mocha coffee was the biggest disappointment. I did not interpret the menu correctly when ordering side of meat ( ham, bacon, sausage, Canadian ham, so I would ask how many do you get. I thought I was getting 5 sausage and only got 3. Stopped here for our first breakfast while in town. We were looking for a place with a little charm and found this one. We ordered breakfast plates - I ordered the breakfast burrito. Good flavor to it - it had the right amount of eggs sausage and salsa with properly cooked peppers inside. The hash browns were standard. This was an awful experience. I love an old school coffee shop but this is a modern day ripoff. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich @ 6.00 and an ice tea. My bill was 21.00 !!!!!! I said there must be a mistake!! !!! They said no, Challah bread is extra. So it was 10.00 extra for Challah bread. More than the sandwich itself. The mistake would be ever going there again. What a terrible way to take advantage of people. Shame on John's coffee shop. read more

The breakfast request from my family who was visiting was "classic NY diner", and this place really delivered!! The inside is very cozy and retro. While it does have a decent amount of seating we did have to wait about 20 minutes for a table for 3. However once we were seated, service was great and very fast. I ordered their biscuits and gravy, with a side of Canadian bacon. My family got pancakes and the chicken waffle sandwich. All were absolutely delicious and so satisfying - just classic breakfast food made very well. And the cost was so reasonable too.
