Tulio is my new favorite evening spot, conveniently located 1 block from work and inside the hotel where I typically stay when in Seattle. I'm normally on the verge of being vegetarian, so i love the gnocchi and the risotto, but adore the agnolotti. Service here is splendid. Sit at the bar if you're here solo. Horrible Wedding Reception !! My fiancé and I booked Tulio's private dinning option for our small micro-wedding reception (12 guests) over the summer. I communicated back and fourth via email with the Complex Catering Manager,Wade Richards, 2 months prior to the event, coordinating all of the details including menu, drinks, table arrangement etc. Initially, the catering manager was very receptive in his emails, however I started to notice warning signs two weeks prior to the dinner when he still was unable to present me with an official BEO. It wasn't until my fiancé called him 3 days prior to the dinner that he actually bothered to send me the BEO to sign, he did so while also subsequently ignoring my prior email about the table arrangement. My fiancé called him again the next day to ensure the table arrangement was finalized. As paying clients, we should NOT have been calling the manager ourselves to ensure all of the details were accurate only days prior!! In his last communication to us prior to the event, Wade stated that he would be unable to oversee our event on the day of due to a memorial service. At this point, to our knowledge everything would be good to go with our wedding reception. The next day we arrived at Tulio after our wedding ceremony and everything that could go wrong went wrong!! The table arrangement was in the shape a square with a random hole in the middle of the table not a rectangle, messing up the entire seating chart and causing our guests to become isolated from us. Additionally, the name tags on the table did not include last names as requested. Worst of all, the menu at each seat had the wrong date, wrong last name, and had "wedding rehearsal" not "wedding reception" on it. Given that Tulio is considered an upscale restaurant and we paid $3,000 for such poor service AND this was our wedding day, to say we were furious was an understatement but we just tried to enjoy the rest of the evening. The following week, we called Wade ourselves to let him know how the bad our dinning experience was given he was unable to attend himself. Us calling him was apparently the first time he had any knowledge that anything went wrong at the dinner meaning that he nor Tulio bothered to check in to see how things went. Where is the customer service?! He apologized admitting to not double checking everything and said the only thing he could do was to send us new corrected menus. Seriously?? What about a refund?! We also contacted Robert Moss, the Director of Food and Beverage at the Kimpton Hotel (which Tulio is a part of) and while sympathetic he seemed generally disinterested in what we had to say. Robert said he would get back to us which he never did and to date we have NOT received any compensation or the corrected menus. Given the lack of care on our wedding day and the shocking unprofessionalism, I would avoid this restaurant at all costs!!! read more

While in Seattle, alone, on business, I sallied forth from my hotel, a veritable bastion of safety and comfort, to revel one night in the Great Northwest. As a native San Franciscan (holmes, it ain't Frisco and never call it San Fran), I used to chafe at New Yorkers' suggestion that San Francisco is a nice, little city. Then I went to New York City and . . . San Francisco is a nice, little city. But the places share, in certain ways, familiarities. E.g., Chinatown(s); Italian neighborhoods; storied monied classes; and, Old World Theatre Districts. See, Seattle is different. Europeans proclaim that San Francisco, with New Orleans, is the most European-like city in the USA. New York City is Gotham, great big place. Both cities are loud, brash, smelly, and grimy in spots, with homeless, theaters, popular restaurants fully committed, and other similarities. Seattle is different. Yeah, there is red brick in Seattle. Yeah, there is great coffee, a Chinese area, an Il Fornaio, and at least one of every chain boutique one's wife could want. And, yeah, they speak English and walk upright in Seattle. But, from this man's perspective, Seattle is like nowhere else in the USA. Not even Portland. There are dozens of cities across the South whereat residents boast of the best barbecue; cities along the East Coast whose citizens demand each be known as the birthplace of clam chowder, Buffalo wings, and baby wipes (go ahead, connect the dots). But Seattle? Seattle stole the mantle as King Coffee from my native burgh and was the birthplace of Grunge. It begat Nordstrom. Seattle is a place where it measurably rains 155 days per year. Measurably, as in other places would count those unmeasurable days as rainy days of precipitation but in Seattle those days don't count. Seattle: clean, modern, coffee house vibing on a grand scale. Seattle: I could live here. But, I digress. And spout cliches. Forgive me, please, or don't. So, when I strolled into the brisk mid-March evening from my Downtown hotel, I ambled over to Tulio, around since 1992. Recommended by a Washington native self-exiled to the Bay Area, Tulio is a place worth the splurge and return visits. In no particular order, let's start in the middle, in medias res. I usually avoid daily specials, but the swordfish was so heartily recommended and brilliantly explained - thanks, Nate - that this big mouth bass bit. Topped with a pine nut relish, the thick steak itself sat atop a bed of savory greens. The flesh was fantastic and perfectly cooked (firm but not dry). Sometimes, restaurants over-salt food; not Tulio, not this night, not this fish. Prior to the entree, I enjoyed an organic field green salad. "Borrrring," you say. And, you would be right in San Francisco, but in Seattle at Tulio? Nope. This was a large salad, with a zesty (tangy) citrus dressing and house croutons. The offered focaccia was baked onsite. Yeah, I know, I'm generally avoiding carbs, but Nate brought this plate with huge slabs of Tulio's intoxicatingly aromatic focaccia and, with an assist from the extra virgin olive oil, I ate the entire plate. So, I cheated (on my diet). But, the wine list. And the Grappa list. And the cheese plate. And Nate's willingness to let me taste a few things before ordering was exemplary. And note to other restaurants: A weak pour will not get me to order that second glass; the wine pours at Tulio are 6.5-7.0 ounces and served in big, heavy Bordeaux glasses. I wanted one glass to drink and one just to look at, a purple work of liquid art suspended over my table in a shimmering globe. Super Tuscan 'Il Fauno di Arcanum, 2012. Nate let me taste. My search began and ended with Arcanum. Nate also let me taste a few Grappas, one of which was, as he had promised, elegant and singular in its approach. But at $28/glass, the Poli Barrique was a bit rich for this poor soul so I opted for that second glass of the Arcanum at half the price. My art morphed into a triptych, three stages of debauchery, as I slowly drained that glass in long, thoughtful gulps. With that second glass, I needed something. Not a dessert person, I needed a bit of food with Arcanum #2 and my espresso, so all in with the formaggio. A trio of Spanish cheeses, toasts, and interesting and not too sweet date spread-cookie thing I actually (greedily) ate. At this point, I was ready to roll uphill, back to my secure bastion, but something was amiss. Think: Italian food, too much Italian food, walking not driving, . . . What am I forgetting? Oh, that's it, a Fernet (digestive). Alas, said adventure ended shortly after said Fernet. I describe a great dining experience. Only four stars? One, some decor was out of 1992; that is, dingy curtains covering the street-side windows. Then the Fernet pour: wimpy, wimpy, wimpy. Me and the gf decided to check out tulio based on yelp reviews. We stopped by on a Saturday around 1pm to find out on the weekends they do brunch instead of a standard lunch. Okay not a big deal as they still have some lunch fare. We sit down promptly. Wait service came by within a couple minutes to check on us. Starving we basically want to get our food asap. Server took our order without issue. Food came about 15 minutes later. Appearance wise everything was good until I realized that one side of the grilled bread dish (think Italian eggs benedict) had charred and burnt bread. Not lightly brown. Or limited to black grill marks. Burned. :/ disappointed to see seeing as how re toasting something as cheap as bread would have been easy to fix. The tagliatelle (sp) was better than the grilled bread in appearance but The sauce was really spicy. Like overly so. Some people might like it that way but we felt like there was over powering the dish's other flavors and textures. The service near the end of brunch service checked on us a couple times but felt rushed. Needless to say I was a bit disappointed for a $46 bill after tip. We said we wanted an experience nicer than cheesecake factory and ended up with a slightly worse one. The parts of my grilled bread dish that weren't burnt were pretty good and I could recommend it. The service here is fantastic. Very attentive. But food is the most important thing so let's talk about that. I have been here four times and each time it has been a different experience in terms of the food. The first time it was great--I ordered the gnocchi and was impressed. I ordered it again a few months later and it was disappointing. I didn't go back for two years until last week. I had a business lunch there and ordered the gnocchi which was really good so much so that I went back the same week for a birthday lunch and ordered the gnocchi but it was burnt and did not taste good. This place is inconsistent and expensive. It's part of the Vintage Seattle Kimpton hotel so they can get away with the high charge. Parking is really tough, but that's because of the area. read more

Unacceptable service. We had a reservation 1 hour 45 minutes before a theatre performance. They assured us twice that they could get us to the performance in time. They were wrong. Despite many reminders, they caused us to miss the beginning of the performance causing us to watch the performance from the theatre lobby! The men's bathroom was out of order. Missing the start of the performance cost more than the dinner. I've NEVER, NEVER had this poor of service. Others were served before us. So disappointed. I was here several years ago and had a creamy pasta dish with pork belly. It was luxuriant! I raved about it So I was eager to ordered it when I got into town, recently. Oof. Really really unenjoyable. I kept putting salt on it to try and bring out some flavor but there was really nothing to work with. Very little sauce, dry pork belly. I've been a big fan of this restaurant for years preceding the pandemic and have waited eagerly for them to resume lunch service. Yesterday, friends and I finally had the chance to return to our favorite place. What a disappointment. We ordered three different entrees from the very limited menu, which we rated from mediocre to poor. And it was very expensive, which only added insult to injury. Had the lunch special pizza (rosemary roasted grapes/ricotta/arugula) and oh.my.god... the crust was incredible. I'm definitely a classic meat pizza type of gal, but felt like a spur of the moment pizza and rose lunch, and I loved it! To add to the experience, the bartender (Odin) was extremely friendly and provided excellent service, and even went so far as to provide other dining suggestions on a business card (I just moved here). Had a lunch meeting here today and the only open table was by the kitchen which wasn't ideal for a work meeting, but apparently booths are usually reserved about 3 weeks out. Typical Italian menu like pizza, pasta, salad, etc. I ordered the chicken avocado salad with an apricot dressing. Honestly, it was an okay salad, but not worth $20. My colleagues had a pizza and pasta dish and they both liked what they ordered so maybe I'll go with something less healthy next time. Location is great - right next to one of our buildings which was the only reason we chose this place. Although I've worked in the neighborhood for years, I somehow missed Tulio. When looking for a place for a group of 10, I ran across it on Yelp. The upstairs space is excellent for groups. There are a number of larger tables and although there were about 5 other groups there, it was relatively quiet. That may have been because my table was the "loud" ones. :-) I had the roasted beet salad to start. Beets are a love it, hate it kind of thing and I love them! Adding quinoa, goat cheese, and pistachios sounded heavenly. I expected it to be salty, which it wasn't. As a matter of fact, it was downright bland. I didn't finish it and asked to have it taken away when my next dish came. I love gnocchi so I was looking forward to the sweet potato variety that was coming my way! The sauce separated a few minutes after it was set down in front of me. The outside of the gnocchi appeared to be fried and they were overly doughy. *sad face* I didn't finish those either. The food quality wouldn't have bothered me as much if it weren't for the prices. When it was time to pay, the server did something I wasn't expecting. He came to the table, took one payment, went to the register, processed it and came back. We basically had to wait to pay one by one. It's great for groups but only if one person is paying. Highly recommend! I am staying at The Vintage Hotel and found it amazing that such a great restaurant is located right in my hotel. I called the restaurant last night and the man that picked up that I made a reservation for my moms birthday breakfast and to see if there's anything they can do to make it special. The gentleman assured me that there will definitely be something special done. My mom and I walked in and right away we were created with a happy birthday! Doug greeted us so sweetly and walked us to our table with a huge smile on his face. He brought my mom a mimosa to start off her birthday in style! Unfortunately, my mom is allergic to oranges so be brought her a Bloody Mary instead, which my mom said was amazing. Our waitress, Becky, was so sweet! She was very friendly and always had a smile on her face. When I asked her about their jam that I am obsessed with, not only did she bring me the information where I can order it but also brought me an entire box of it to take home! That was beyond sweet of her and I can't wait to share it with my grandma. Aside from the jam, their vegetarian frittata was delicious and it was very sweet of the kitchen to split it for us. I ordered a side of fruit, which was huge and my mom also ordered a side of their homemade sausage. She loved her sausage a lot. YUM! Tulio was great! We visited Seattle for the weekend (from Alaska) and overheard staff at our hotel mention Tulio as one of their favorites. It was about a block from our hotel, so we thought we'd try it. Called ahead for a last minute reservation and were accommodated. We arrived a couple minutes early and were offered seats in the bar since our table wasn't ready. Sat in the bar a few minutes and chatted with the bartender about the menu. I was surprised at how knowledgeable he was about how the food is prepped and what ingredients are in each dish. The staff was all professional & friendly. We ended up having dinner at Tulio 2x in the 5 days we were in Seattle, because of the great service, delish food, and close proximity to our hotel. The first night we split a house salad and then I had tortelli (crab roasted on-site, inside fresh made pasta) and my husband had the pork shank (braised w/amazing ricotta mashed potatoes). The crab was perfect, slight lemon flavor and of course everything is better with fresh pasta - you can't go wrong. The pork shank was tender and falling apart, right into the mashed potatoes. So yummy! The second night we were there we had an order of the sweet potato gnocchi (OMG! the other reviews were right! you HAVE to try this). Sweet potato coated in semolina flour, and fried in sage compound butter with marscapone cheese over the top. YUM! I also had the roasted chicken and my husband got the tagliatelle (ragu). Again, his was with fresh made noodles and a meat sauce of veal & pork. Very tasty. My chicken was roasted with an incredible crust on the skin. I never eat the skin, but HAD to this time. We finished our meals with blackberry gelato (flav of the day) and tiramisu. So yummy. Darrell was our server both times and he was great! My boyfriend had the Korubota Pork Shank and it was delicious, the meat was so succulent it was falling off the bone. Plus we brought a bottle of wine and they didn't even charge a corkage fee! The food was delicious modern Italian and the 3 of us enjoyed everything from sharing the Burrata Cheese appetizer to the delicious Corn Risotto. Our main courses were the perfectly cooked and seasoned Veal Chop to the Braised Pork Shoulder to the fish special of the night, Black Cod; all were outstanding. Our charismatic and attentive waiter Javier made the night perfect. We ordered the gnocchi to start then I had the steak and my wife had the chicken. Both was cooked beautifully, chicken was crispy on the skin but also juicy inside, not overcooked and also not undercooked! My ribeye was perfectly medium, I hate on some place they cook steak medium as a medium well, but in here it was perfect. The potato that comes with the steak is a little bit too much and I think the aurugula could have little bit vinaigraitte or something, but hey I came for the steak only and it was great. Have been here for a work dinner with a couple dozen co-workers, but that visit was the only time I've dined. Starting with simplest/most superficial details. Tulio is in a fabulous hotel with a great downtown location. It's not right in the heart of downtown, but it's just blocks away. Great place to have an out of the way dinner while still being in the city, and to have the option of a fairly luxurious overnight stay right upstairs. Still, easily worth eating here for locals who aren't getting a room. Tulio offers exceptional service. Very friendly and well-trained staff who know the menu and the wine list cold. Easy to talk to, easy to trust with subjective questions about food and wine, and very prompt and thorough. The whole package for staff. The kitchen focuses on Italian classic dishes. Well-prepared, hearty food. The wine list has some of the usual suspects and some well-chosen lesser-known labels. Expensive, and not an all-the-time place for any budget. But an eminently worthy splurge. read more

Came here last night for dinner with my brother and sister. Was a few blocks walk from our hotel in downtown Seattle, so parking wise looked like street parking from what I could tell. The restaurant itself is deceivingly large haha. The restaurant is kept dark where you can barely see your food or your table but where the musicians are playing(yes live music) and the bar is better lit. It was pretty empty from what I could tell which is a shame because the food here is decently proportioned and good. The Bolognese I got was REAL good. The sauce is done right here. We shared some meatball sliders, which were heavenly, garlic bread which wasn't anything special and salad which I wasn't too much a fan of because of the anchovies on top....the main entrees were amazing though. We also got the gelatto(which the flavors change based on which day you go) and the tiramisu which were solid. I wouldn't say it was anything like I haven't tasted before or that anything stood out, just think the restaurant is overall a solid place to go if you want great service and good reliable food it seems. Get the gnocchi. I can tell you about how good everything is but we can't start this conversation until you go to Tulio and order it. The standards were set high once they hit the table. I have Trader Joe's version of the same gnocchi and I'll probably end up letting my room mates go to town on it because there is only room in my heart for Chef Walter's sweet potato gnocchi now. The sage chicken and lemon risotto is the perfect comfort food with a nice juice to be soaked up by some bread once you've cleaned your plate. Next time I'll save room for dessert. Started with the sweet potato gnocchi which were excellent, as was the buratta. The ceasar salad was ok - the dressing was runny and not all that great. For entrees the chicken with the lemon risotto was quite nice, especially the risotto which had great notes of lemon and wasn't heavy - really well made. Went here for the full Italian menu for lunch, but turns out they only have brunch menu on Saturday even after 12. I still got the Linguine Carbonara, so 1 points for keeping something Italian on the menu (along with another pasta item). Service was nice and friendly, felt almost a bit homey and not over-modernized or simplified interior design. It felt like a rare atmosphere that I don't see much around Seattle. In terms of food, the carbonara was not properly cooked. I cook carbonara at home a lot, and I've experimented before so I know where it can go wrong. It looks like they didn't let the linguine cool enough before adding in the yolk. It was a lumpy carbonara, and I suspect they added cheese too which I did not like. It would be nice if they specified they would be putting cheese in the pasta, so I could ask for it to come without. Also, it was $18 for this. Overall, I'd say it was a decently serviced but mediocre food experience. The staff are quite friendly, but the food won't take me back there. read more

In fact i sent it back expecting word from the kitchen and to my surprise my waiter just shrugged it off as just a picky customer. My husband and I have been to Tulio's twice now, and loved each visit. We went the other night for our anniversary, and totally enjoyed ourselves. When I made the reservation through Open Table, I mentioned it was for our anniversary. When we showed up, the host wished us a happy, and when we sat down, there were two beautiful roses on our table. Really sweet touch that made us feel special. The ambience is cozy and romantic, it's not too noisy, and as I looked around, I noticed some people dressed up (like us), and others were casual. All looked like they were having a great time, and very relaxed. My husband is celiac, so it was really appreciated that they have a gluten free menu. We started with a glass of bubbly rose (appreciated the healthy pour!) and the hearts of romaine appetizer, which was small but delicious, with just the right amount of dressing and shaved aged cheese. My husband had the bone-in rib eye with crushed marbles (aka crispy baby potatoes), which was delicious. But he kept stealing from my plate, which was filled with insanely good, melting-off-the-bone pork shank atop rich and creamy ricotta mashed potatoes, and covered with a rich, dark sauce and dried fruit, with a side of steamed chard (one of my fave greens). It was probably one of the best meals I've had in a long time. We each had a glass of yummy red wine (again, nice pour), and for dessert, in honor of our anniversary, they brought a complimentary semifreddo filled with pistachios and covered with a mixed berry compote. This may very well be my favorite breakfast ever. Tulio is cozy, romantic, and authentic! My meal is incredibilmente delizioso and unique, and it doesn't end there. Upon entering the restaurant, I am greeted and welcomed by Doug who gives me a brief history of the restaurant and the hotel (Tulio sits inside The Kimpton Vintage hotel - recently renovated - originally constructed in 1905.) Shortly after being seated, Becky arrives to my service, and she is simply radiant. If I may summarize, what really impresses me about Tulio is how the warm and inviting energy of the service team is complimented by historic qualities of the decor, the light music, and the ambrosial flavors of the chef (Walter Pisano is the Executive Chef - Eccezionale!) I'd love to give this restaurant 5 stars if it weren't for how rude the hostess was. We had tickets to a nearby show at the Lotte Hotel and decided to try Tulio on August 3,2022. My aunt and I walked in at 5:30 pm to a pretty quiet restaurant. We asked if we could have a table for 2 and the hostess looked behind her at empty tables and then at the host there with her. My aunt asked if there was a problem and the woman said they had people with reservations coming. The man with her mumbled something to her and she said she may be able to seat us. It felt awkward and like we weren't wanted at all. We then suggested we just sit in the bar. The bartender was wonderful, we dont drink but he was great company and suggested some great dishes. Our food was fantastic. This place is somewhere we'd like to visit again but are hesitant because of the way we were treated by the hostess. I wonder is it because we were in jeans? Then I realize NO, this is Seattle. She definitely made us feel like we weren't welcome to say the least. read more

This is a cute restaurant located near the Kimpton. Went here for dinner with some work colleagues since it's one of the best Italian restaurants in Seattle. Service was good; they graciously held some of our items at the host stand since this restaurant is quite narrow/small. Definitely not meant for large groups, but maybe a date, a few friends. Four of us in a booth felt a little cramped, I am not going to lie. The pastas are classic; if you're looking for something very inventive, maybe look elsewhere? It was satisfying though, and I felt the portion was good -- not too much, as old-school Italian places sometimes dole out, but not a meager portion either. I had the pappardelle with rabbit ragu, which came with a mountain of parmesan shavings. The pappardelle could be a bit more toothsome (as I prefer) but it was not mushy and the ragu clung to the noodles well. I was definitely eyeing the orecchiette my coworker ordered -- it looked really good. We also enjoyed the tiramisu, which was split between four people and provided a perfect two-three bites to each of us. Hidden gem in the city that I've passed by a billion times. It's connected to the Kimpton Hotel Downtown so hard to spot sometimes. Loved the sweet potato gnocchi and the lamb. My friend got the scallops and presentation was beautiful. Top notch server who gave awesome recs (I usually like my meat medium well but he suggested I go with medium with my lamb since it tends to be dry if overcooked and the meat turned out perfect!). Yes, pricey but lovely atmosphere and dining experience overall. Would recommend you choose the valet option for stress free parking (only $8 if you mention you are eating at the restaurant). read more
