We were hoping for a smoked whiskey cocktail since the restaurant itself smelled like smoke but they didn't have any... if they added one to the menu we'd be thrilled. The sublime Sakura was smooth, perfectly sweet and creamy. The flavor reminded me a lot of a sherbet ice cream I'd have as a kid. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is our server seemed a little put off by having to take care of us and wasn't super friendly. My family and I are visiting Seattle for the World Cup, and we decided to try Rider for happy hour before heading to Pike Place Market. Given the excitement around the World Cup and the fact that the hotel lobby is decorated for the event, we were disappointed that the match was not being shown. One employee was very helpful and kindly directed us to another location where we could watch the game, so we left at that time. Later that evening, we decided to give Rider another chance. Earlier in the day, I had noticed a Paloma on the happy hour menu and wanted to try it. We arrived around 9:15 p.m. and sat near the bar since we only planned to have drinks. Unfortunately, the service was disappointing from the start. There was no greeting, smile, or acknowledgment from the staff. After waiting quite a while, someone finally took our order for two beers and two Palomas. The beers were poured and left sitting on the counter for approximately 10 minutes while the server avoided making eye contact with us. When I finally got his attention and asked about them, he explained they were waiting for the other drinks. I politely asked if he could bring the beers over so they wouldn't get warm. His response felt annoyed, and his attitude toward us noticeably changed. We then waited another 10 minutes for the Palomas. When they finally arrived, they were extremely disappointing and, honestly, undrinkable. I am not someone who normally complains, and I usually let things go, but the drinks were that bad. Since last call was approaching, the bill was brought to us almost immediately. When I saw the price of the cocktails, I felt it was reasonable to ask for them to be remade. That request was clearly not well received by the staff. What made the experience even more frustrating was that we overheard another guest at the bar also complaining about the service. The employee's response was that it had been "a long week." While I understand that hospitality can be demanding, guests should not feel the effects of staff frustration or burnout. At no point did anyone apologize for the delays, the poor service, or the quality of the drinks. In the end, we spent nearly $100 on beverages that we did not enjoy and received service that fell far below what we expected from a hotel of this caliber. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience and unfortunately left a negative impression of Rider during what should have been an enjoyable visit to Seattle. read more

One of our meals was forgotten and took an unusually long time to arrive, with little acknowledgment or communication regarding the delay. After that, service at our table became very limited, and it was difficult to get assistance. We tried a bunch of apps: fish dip, oysters, bread, and calamari. Calamari was probably my favorite- I just wish I could've had more! Fish dip was great as well- again, just wish there was more bread served with it to enjoy it all! I don't love oysters typically, but these were clearly high quality. I ordered the salmon since we're in Seattle! the fish itself was great. The rest of the plate was kinda funky to me: a few chips, some beans, and interesting sauce (not sure what it was). Their happy hour runs daily from 2 PM - 6 PM, and here's what we tried: Smoked Salmon Fish Dip with Sourdough Bread - absolutely delicious! Smoky, savory, with just the right amount. Went for simple PNW fare tonight. Wood grilled wild salmon. This place absolutely nailed it from presentation to accouterments (fresh salad and excellent fingerling potatoes). The salmon was a center cut and easily seasoned with salt and pepper. Perfect whisper of wood smoke and the skin was perfectly crisp. It was medium rare and perfectly flakey. CeCe who is usually the hostess (tonight she stepped into serving) helped ensure my dinner order beat the rush when they opened the kitchen at 4p - professional, personable and very efficient. I feel like hotel restaurants easily fly under the radar in Seattle, which is a bummer, because so many are hidden gems - and that's truly the case for Rider! Ambiance here is definitely a little more on the classy side, but not so classy that you wouldn't be able to stop in spontaneously while not dressed up a ton. Service is awesome. All of the waiters and bartenders are personable and nice. Our table of four tried a few things that were all delicious! The Smoked Fish Dip is unique but worth the try. So yummy! The Hamachi Crudo is also a perfect bite and tasted sooo fresh. Highly recommend if you're a seafood fan! For my entree I went with the Rigatoncini. Immmmmeddiatteee yes. If you're craving pasta, this is THE dish. It's an amazingly flavorful lamb bolognese with ricotta and ARTICHOKES. I'm a huge artichoke girly so this was such a treat to have in the dish. This review is for the Thanksgiving dinner (buffet). We went at 6pm to make sure we wouldn't be stuck with bottom-of-pan options. Turkey was drier than dry. Ham was good but only accompaniment for it was mustard. Wish the stuffing/dressing wasn't wet clumpy grains with big chunks of squash and pork sausage. Texture was off-putting. Squash ravioli with sausage ragu was an odd combo IMO, why not offer it with a butter sage sauce or something lighter to offset the heavy foods. Sweet potatoes were ok, but the stuffing had sweet potatoes and ravioli also tasted like sweet potatoes. It was yam overkill. There was NO gelato cart as listed on the menu. We had to ask an employee about it and they let us know they weren't able to get a cart but they do have gelato in the kitchen. The staff was nice about it and got us a bowl of chocolate gelato.Pumpkin pies were very wet. The mini dessert option was lacking and not labeled well. (Green-dusted profiteroles were not matcha or pistachio, just light chocolate mousse, mini cakes/petit fours was one flavor, etc) The brussels sprouts were good with some confit turkey leg and green bean casserole was decent. Overall I did not feel like the food quality was worth the price, especially when cocktails are averaging $20. $450 for 3 to eat buffet with 2 glasses of wine/2 mocktails/soda. And we ended up needing to get dessert elsewhere because no one could eat the desserts except for 1 gelato scoop. read more

Came here to enjoy a quick meal before a Saturday night performance of The Lion King. It was quite busy but I was able to get a seat at the bar. The staff were friendly but not quick. I enjoyed a quick cocktail (Madame Lou) which was pretty good. I also enjoyed the coconut Tanu ceviche. it came with plantain chips. Not the best option to enjoy with raw tuna because they break so easily and they are slim and the chunk of tuna were quite large. Everything tasted fresh though. It was loud and the atmosphere was confusing. Is this a nice relaxing place or a sports bar? Prices say the former. read more

We had reservations to have dinner before a show at the Paramount. It is nicely appointed nearby within walking distance. The atmosphere gave industrial subway speakeasy vibes. The staff wore blacksmithing leather aprons which gave a certain attitude of frisky and classy. The craft cocktails were delicious and we had some good food. I had the cutest presentation for my autumn squash soup in a pumpkin pot. It was flavorful and well seasoned. Additionally, my friend ordered the salmon and stated the skin was crispy without overcooking the salmon which was tender and juicy. The whipped potatoes with roasted garlic wete decadent and the roasted carrots perfectly cooked. A lot of options for vegetarians in a steak and seafood restaurant. The lamb ragu pasta got a 3/5 rating, not much lamb in the mix as advertised. We enjoyed our wine that we brought with us and the corkage fee was $35. The bartender Ben stepped in while our server was busy and opened and decanted our wine. The staffing level could have been better and we had a few ordering mistakes that were graciously repaired. I will definitely return here for some fries and martinis at minimum at the bar after a show. Perfect nightcap location since they are open late. read more

My friend and I decided to hit this place up before a Seahawks game on a Sunday. The server was very attentive and super knowledgeable when we asked for a suggestion on the menu! You get to wait in the hotel lobby until you are seated. We started with Kiss Me Deadly, Penn Cove Mussels & Clams, and Pumpkin soup. I loved my drink, Kiss Me Deadly. The Penn Cove Mussels & Clams were great, the broth was so flavorful, the toast with it was perfect to dunk in the broth. The Pumpkin soup was okay, it wasn't hot when we got it. We then got the Rigatoncini, and Whole bone-in Rainbow Trout. I loved the Rigatoncini, the lamb bolognese was great, loved the whipped ricotta on top. We got the Rainbow Trout with chimichurri sauce. Walked past this place and thought it had a cool vibe and an interesting menu so decided to check it out. I like the aesthetic and think it's a pretty place to have dinner. The drink menu has some drinks that look appealing, but I find it really odd for a menu to feature alcohol like new amsterdam vodka and cruzan rum. These are some of the cheapest bottom tier liquors you can buy, I wouldn't even list these labels if this is what I had in my well. 16 or 17 dollars for these is ridiculous and honestly embarrassing alongside other liquors on the menu like woodford or titos which are more reputable. Why cut corners here? There were a number of dishes on the menu that piqued my interest, but I really wanted to go with something grilled as they tout a wood fired grill. I elected to go for the pork chop and what I got was very disappointing. First off this was supposed to be a 14 oz pork chop and I wanted to ask where the other half was. This was probably 8 oz if I'm generous and that includes the bone. The chop has the barest semblance of being grilled, it looks like it was laid on the grill for 10 seconds to pick up the charcoal dust to make marks and that was it. It's not even properly seared. It's overcooked, not completely dry to the point of being chalky, but it should have been juicier. Not even the tiniest bit of seasoning here, it definitely needed salt and pepper at the least. They're listing the farm where the pork came from, which makes me think it would be of heritage quality, but it didn't have any rich marbling or depth of flavor more so than the basic cheap cut you get in the grocery store. When I have paid $40+ for a pork chop it has always been insanely better than any grocery store cut, this wasn't even close. I have made a pork chop 10 times better in my cast iron skillet at home. It seems to me they're cheapening out on quality here in the same way as the cocktails. The pork chop also came with a sauce, I went with the au poivre and it was no surprise terrible. More like a brown briny gravy than an au poivre. It had no fresh crack pepper taste, I think they only used brined peppercorns and that's why it had a weird tang to it. It also must not have been made as a pan sauce as it had no meaty flavor whatsoever. Texturally it was too thick like a glob of gravy rather than a delicate creamy sauce as it should be. I upgraded to a side of carrots instead of potatoes. Carrots were cooked well, but were barely browned leaving a lot of flavor on the table. Brown butter was a nice touch. Hazelnut picada was way too rough chopped for carrots. You need something almost as fine as bread crumbs to stick here. The hazelnut chunks just fell off and had to be eaten separately. Had to get dessert because I was still hungry. Got the chocolate mousse crunch cake. I don't think they know what chocolate mousse is because this had the density of cheese cake and was not light or whipped up like mousse is. There was something on the bottom with the hardness of a crust more than there actually being any cake here. Call it a chocolate cheesecake and it wouldn't be so bad. Ice cream was great. The crunch was just a bed of granola? It was way too hard and crunchy and was an annoying texture change here. Service at the bar was mediocre despite multiple people behind the bar the entire time. No one would even look my way. Took a long time just to get someones attention to inquire about the menu. Staff didn't know any details on the pork chop or short rib, how it would be prepared or even whether it was boneless or not. Automatic 20% gratuity which was hardly earned. I would say there's a lot of promise here and perhaps some of the other dishes are of higher quality and caliber. But for what I ordered, the price, execution, and quality, are not in alignment. read more

I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried a new drink - whiskey sour with egg whites! I gotta say that I loved it! I started off with my usual tequila, lime and soda drink, but the whiskey drink was fantastic! We had little bites at the event that were great as well, my favorite being the shrimp and the oysters! I was still hungry though and ordered a clam chowder bowl, which I was not expecting to be as good as it was! So glad I tried it. My favorite part, however, was the staff... I cannot say enough! Every single one of them made my visit so pleasant! They all took the time to answer questions, to talk about the menu, complimented my outfit, and they all seemed genuinely happy to be there! The overall vibe of this place is casual and is a large opened space with lots of seating. We opted in for the Fire & Ice Chef table dining experience and overall it was really good. The service was spotty and not the chef experience expected. For the drinks, they were all crafted well and very tasty. The smoked old fashioned drink was my favorite. For the food, it was a chef custom experience. The portions were good for the group and by the end of service was satisfied. The oysters, fish, and scallops were fresh, vibrant, and flavorful. The pork belly was absolutely fantastic with crispy skin and flavorful bites. The filet was nicely seared and cooked to perfection. The salad was a nice balance to everything and the panna cotta was a perfect finish to the meal. Overall the experience was ok and would not mind trying another one when the menu changes, despite not being charged correctly according to the reservation. The food here is amazing! We had the pork chop w chimichurri sauce, the scallops, Brussels sprouts, gem Cesar salad, smoked salmon dip and dinner rolls. Everything was delicious. The restaurant has a cool vibe to it, it's industrial, but art deco feel. It has an open kitchen concept so you can see the grill and kitchen going while seated in the dining area. The reason for 4/5 stars is, we had bones in our smoked salmon dip (they took it away which is why I don't have a photo) lastly, the service was not great. Our server was overwhelmed and was not particularly patient. She did not regularly check on us, so we didn't get a water refill until the end of our meal when we asked for the check. Besides those things I would go back to try more menu items. read more

We made a reservation though we didn't necessarily have to given it wasn't very full (though when we've tried walking in before at similar times and empty seats we have been turned away). It was a mixed experience all around. Most of the food was good - especially the oysters and soup, but my scallops came out lukewarm to cold and my second drink came out well after we had finished eating. The pricing vs. portion size was also pretty extreme. Our server was really friendly and gave good recommendations but then they forgot about us several times during our meal (ie to bring plates out for the apps) or to include spoons for the soup. This is also definitely more a place to go for a leisurely meal rather than something fast before a show. It was very classy and sleek inside. Honestly, we enjoyed our meal and would recommend it for a fancier meal if you're in the area and make a res but we probably wouldn't come back because of cost for value. Maybe for the happy hour, especially if the soup is on that menu, but overall we are ok with our one off experience. read more

Sat down at the bar on a slow Sunday. It was me, a lady and a couple at the bar. The couple seemed to be well into their stay and the bartender was thoroughly engaged with the lady - who may have been a coworker with how everything went. I sat at the bar for about 5 mins waiting for a menu. Mind you I'm about 10 feet from the bartender, who's back was slightly facing me but was definitely aware of me waiting for a couple of those minutes while she carried on her convo with the lady as if there was nothing better to do. Eventually got an order in and as I was waiting to finish my drink and immediately leave I noticed a couple sit down to my left and get greeted/served within 20 seconds of sitting down. I hope I was just randomly treated poorly by the bartender but that definitely came into question at that point. Come to find out there's a mandatory 20% gratuity. Visited for happy hour (3:30/4is on a Thursday) while we were staying at the hotel Theodore and loved the vibe of the place. We sat at the bar and the bartenders were incredibly friendly. They have a decent list of HH cocktails for 9$ and my martini was well made. I had some oysters which were 3$/piece and they were the best oysters I've had in a long long time. Oysters came with a rhubarb vinegar which was super unique and delicious as well. We also ordered a side of fries and they were very good as well. A coworker made a lunch reservation here for a group of 5 on a weekday. When we got there, it seemed like they didn't have our reservation and took a while to get us seated. One of us ordered a sparkling water -- fair warning that there isn't a "single serving" of the bottle, it was huge. Also when our server gave us the bottle, she didn't give a bottle opener or a different glass to pour into; she didn't come back for another 10ish minutes. It took a hot second for her to also take our orders, I ordered calamari and the rest of our team had chicken sandwiches and burgers. The food took about 20 minutes to come out. Calamari was quite mid and a pretty small portion (though it is in the appetizer section, so understandable). The best thing here was the parm fries -- amazing texture and perfect taste. The fries are the sole reason Rider is still getting 3 stars, otherwise it would have been a 1.5 experience for sure. Stayed at the Hotel (Theodore), this week and of course had to check this place out. Went a couple times during our stay and wow, how is this place not packed every night? Maybe the best bartender in Seattle, Ben, I believe, someone correct me here on the name, if I'm wrong, as we had a lot of fun if you know what I mean. Knows his stuff up and down and can this guy multitask. Chatted us up when a good time and was quick on refills, hence the too much fun, lol. And even showed us pics of his cutie pie pup (we're dog lovers). This place isn't cheap though, so be prepared, but, normal downtown hotel Seattle prices, and built in gratuity. Which I'm totally cool with, and they deserve every penny. But, they do have some sweet happy hour deals, like a martini for $9. Generous on the pours. No stingy drinks here. Had some of the best oysters we've ever had, and we've had many ($3 each on HH). Plump, not too briny and buttery and an unexpected torched or grilled lemon. I think these were Tubby's). And, maybe one of the best burgers I've had in years, tasted like cooked over wood and juicy. The bun was also a stunner, held up so well and pillow soft ($20 I believe and when they say cooked to order, they mean it, perfect cook). Came here for drinks with a colleague after work! Bar staff is super friendly. Had their spicy margarita -- it's made in-house and it was good and the MOST spiciest margarita I've ever had! Does a good throat burn but I wasn't bothered by it, I actually really liked it -- it reminded me of real ginger tea My colleague had the Seattle drink, citrusy taste. Dinner menu, food menu is expensive and maybe that's bc the restaurant is in the hotel aka Hotel Theodore. Is the restaurant bad? No. But you would do better at Applebees. And the price would be $50 for two, rather than $150 for two. My experience: 1) We had to ask for ice for our warm water. Not a big deal. Once we got ice we had to immediately get more because it was enough ice for one glass of water, not two 2) After ordering the seafood dip, we returned it as the $18 only inlcuded a single slice of bread (cut in half) and a cold seafood dip with small fish bones in it. Not what we expected. 3) Manager came to "greet" us, but it wasn't apologetic about the dip, instead felt interrogatory 4) Salmon was delicious, the scallops were great. The salad with the salmon, on the other hand, had approximately 1-2 full tablespoons of pepper for the 6-9 small leafs of lettuce (approximately 6 bites to finish the small salad) In summary- I appreciated they were open late, we needed a late (9pm) dinner on a Tuesday. and the food was creative and attempted at high dining. The downside: staff was snobby, we never had our water refilled once, salad was inedible (I think on purpose), we paid $128 for two entrees, a single side, and two glasses of wine. They added the 20% tip in without our permission (what the actual f) and they charge $18 (dont forget tip) for a single slice of bread with boney dip. I have been to Rider inside Hotel Theodore many, many times. I've been for every meal and enjoyed the restaurant alone, with friends, on date nights, and with family. Each experience consistent in service, ambiance, and quality. Since Chef Riccardo joined the team, the dishes and experiences have been elevated. The wine list rotates and the cocktails range from innovative to classic. It really is great for any occasion. If you're staying at the hotel, shuffling around downtown, or heading to a convention I recommend that you make a stop at Rider. I came here with a friend for lunch and was immediately seated. The place was quite empty with only one waitress. Service was pretty good, they come with a huge pepper dispenser if you'd like some pepper. Food wise, ingredients were fresh, it was not bad, but definitely a bit more saucy than I would have liked. Portions felt pretty standard. The salad definitely felt more fancy than the average salad. Prices are definitely way higher than average though, if that is something to consider. read more

Made reservations for this place. Parking is within the hotel. We paid $8 for about 1.5 hours - not bad. When we arrived the hostess was not there. Waited for about 5 minutes. Then we were seated fairly quickly. Our server was attentive in the beginning then it seemed like she forgot about us. We ordered the seafood plateau for 2. The ichiban oysters were good and so were the mussels. The tuna tartare and shrimp cocktail were ok. The crab was good. My husband the smoked manhattan and he enjoyed that. I found it strange that all their beers on tap were from WA. I wish there were some from different states or countries since we are from seattle. Lamb chops came with fingerling potato's. And the potatoes were better than the lamb - nothing special. I had the scallops and they were good - very flavorful. We ordered a side of fried green tomatoes and my husband really enjoyed those. Our waitress got busy in the end. And the tip is automatically in the bill. Which I knew thankfully. I'm not sure I would've tipped our waitress 20% but the cooks and guy making the salads and seafood platter seemed to be working the hardest. Especially since you can see them working. Hats off to that guy. Would be come back again? I think not. This place is pricey for mediocre food. Oh and the dessert selection only 2.
