I love that they are in the my neighborhood and in theory this should be my go-to place for pastries and bread. I went to TB on Sunday late afternoon. There wasn't much of a bread selection so I asked the girl at the counter what she recommended for bread as my favorite type of bread, sourdough was gone. Her response was "hmm. I don't know". "o.k. so what is your favorite type a bread?" I asked. My destination was the new Blue Door Pub. We passed this place and I thought so that's where it is. It was definitely the destination after dinner. I like the layout, and there's plenty of seating compared to the one on Chicago. They also serve chocolate cream pie, of which I am a freak. It's so good looking, and huge. The best part was the crust, a normal white flour crust, and a beautiful pile of whipped cream. I wasn't crazy about the filling. It was way too stiff for a pie, it reminded me of the denseness of flourless chocolate cake. I was able to mix in whipped cream with every bite though. I visited Turtle Bread company with a friend of mine who had visited there several times. It was sort of a last minute decision because Patisserie 46 had closed. Seeing as how it was later in the day, they were out of a few things so I had to keep that in mind while thinking back on my experience. I definitely want to go back in the early afternoon and try it out again. The space is interesting. It's very open with lines of sight all the way to the back of the bakery area. The tables are big and the dining area itself is spacious. The girl who took my order at the counter was friendly. Street parking was easy. I had tea and a piece of chocolate cake. I think I would have enjoyed it more had I been there earlier in the day--the frosting was a little firm for my liking. But the taste of the cake was very good. I enjoyed the tea, as well... But I dont know how much credit to give there since you are simply given a selection of tea bags. Overall, I think 2.5 is probably the best score but because of the circumstances I think the more lenient 3 stars is fine until I can check it out again and try more things. read more

I have been going to this turtle bread location for coffee and sometimes bakery items before my walk three or four times a week. There are some past reviews with which I can relate; I think that the hot food items and some of the deli items are pricey for what they are but delicious and the lay-out can get a little confusing when it's crowded. That being said I always get their potato roll and a coffee. There's to-go containers of raspberry jam that you can grab which makes a great on the go breakfast. Their soups are always excellent and they usually have around 5-6 options. They have little wedges of cheese for under $2 which you gan get to go with their breads. And I have never, ever had a bad pastry here. I can't say that it's my favorite bakery EVER but they hit my spot most always. Give their bakery a chance at least. Their chocolate rolls and savory bread are pretty remarkable. read more

There's really nothing to mention in the way of service here, not particularly friendly, but certainly not rude either. The presentation of the baked goods is their main point of differentiation-- it's a pretty impressive spread without actually being all that much in terms of quantity or variety. The baked goods are quite delicious. I cannot comment on the eggs, etc., as I skipped that route thanks to another Yelper's review. The space is CLEAN, albeit fairly austere. Tables, chairs, and booths-- pretty straight-forward. No cushy chair or private corner. I'll be back, but I won't go way out of my way. read more

I have gone here several times over the past few months and have been extremely impressed with the breakfast food. My wife and I usually go rather early (between 9-11am), and the service gas always been great: plenty of seating without feeling empty, food comes out quickly, nice people, etc. The portions are large too. With most entrees ranging from $9-11, I was pleasantly surprised that they came with greens/potatoes and a slice of toast. Very happy to have this in the neighborhood! read more

I want to like TB, but the food always lets me down. I've already given up on their pizzaria, which always screwed up my orders. I've, also, given up in their ice cream shop, which serves up overpriced and nothing-special ice cream. Now, I've given up in their bakery. They sold me a stale-ass croissant yet again last week. I rarely get annoyed in restaurants but today's annoyance seems more than justified. It's bad enough that I was presented with only one gluten-free option, but when my breakfast finally came, there was a huge piece of what looked like sourdough bread on top. This, after I made it painfully clear that I have celiac issues. So, when the waitress asked if I would like a new dish, I felt bad and not only told her that a new dish wasn't necessary, but I let her just grab the bread right off the plate! I then asked for a tortilla substitute only to be told that I would have to be charged. Believe me, it wasn't the money, but my breakfast was ruined and their solution was to make me walk all the way up to the register and pay for a tortilla - this place makes you pay for meals before ordering. One would think that since I just saved your business from having to remake an entire breakfast, and because it was their screw-up, to begin with, the least a customer who just paid $28.00 could get, is a lousy tortilla. A tortilla, something that cost $0.05 to produce and $0.10 to purchase! This is not a customer service issue, it's a complete lack of consideration issue. At this point, the quality of the food and taste don't even matter. My experience was pretty much shot when this happened so my breakfast basically became the equivalent of throwing $28.00 out of the car window! I made a yelp account just to review Turtle bread because my experience here was so good! The food and baked goods alike were fantastic. Really I cannot say that I've ever had a sandwich and fries quite as good as what I had here. Service was also amazing, everyone was very friendly and very respectful of COVID-19 safety protocol, which I really appreciate. I love this place, but I have three ways to improve it: 1. Outlets! There are like three of them in the whole place. This is not 1936. Codes for houses now require one within ten feet. The easiest thing would be to start with some in the floor. 2. Put supports in the basement to tighten up the floor. The whole thing vibrates every time even a light person walks by. Just plain annoying. 3. Put up some stantions and/or signs for traffic management at the counter. It gets messy when things get busy and people don't know where to stand and order, etc. read more

I like going for breakfast here and I always order the french toast which is consistently good. This time I am given fake syrup. They must of run out of the maple. Disappointment. Our table had not been wiped down. Since you do bus your own table probably best to do this yourself. I gave it 3 stars for the above. My wife gives it 4 since she enjoyed her order. I agree with some of the previous reviews about the service. I've never found it rude, but have occasionally received something other than what I ordered (turkey & cheddar sandwich instead of ham & swiss, etc.). There have been a couple times where the staff serving me acted indifferent, but generally the staff there are pretty nice and helpful. That said, who really cares about so-so service when the food is so great. The sandwiches, soup, bread, quiche, cookies, desserts....its all awesome! Some favorites of mine are the tomato basil soup, the chocoloate chip cookies, and the ham and swiss sandwich with pepper aioli (these are pre-made in the deli-case, but still delicious!). The only thing I've had here that didn't really do it for me was the farmer's breakfast (bacon, eggs, toast). It wasn't bad, but it wasn't that great. To conclude, the comments below regarding the service are somewhat justified, but I don't think are reason enough to rate this place poorly. Reviewing the bakery part of this establishment: The bread is somewhat uninspired. Better than Wonder Bread, but there are a lot better bread bakeries in town. If you've ever eaten bread in France, you will not understand why this stuff is called bread. The pastries are better than the bread, but they're usually out. You have to get there early in the morning to get any. If you think you might wander down before lunch to pick up a couple pastries to have for dessert later in the day, you can just forget about that plan. All they'll have is some boring cookies. For some reason, they don't seem to think it's a good business model to sell the one thing worth buying later in the day. Prices on the baked goods would be really helpful. When I do load up a bag, I have no idea how much money I'm spending until the cashier (with bare hands) picks through my purchases and works some weird accounting magic to come up with a number. Service at the register is adequate but not exactly pleasant. One can tell they've all been told to be friendly, but it's obviously an act. I'd rather shop somewhere where the staff wants to be friendly and is not just putting on a fake smile because the boss might be watching. I haven't tried eating here because the smell of rotten eggs is a little off putting. Also, the prices seem high -- they're even high on the pastries. I don't understand where the "$" came from. It's more like a "$$". Interestingly, the other Turtle Bread locations have a "$$" rating. Are the prices actually different? read more

Weird that there are no reviews of this new location. Maybe it is because they had what could really be mistaken as a "covert grand opening." It is really disappointing as I live in the neighborhood and have been awaiting the opening of this (or any restaurant in that space) for literally YEARS. This location, a 2-minute walk from my front door, stood vacant for over 15 years according to my neighbors. We all looked forward to what was coming and I was thrilled to learn it was a bakery. The opening was painfully dragged out and with very little information available except to watch the progress from the outside. A huge contrast to The Blue Door Pub down the street which gave a clear opening date and immediately let the community in on what would be there! All that aside, it finally opened and Husband and I went in to see what was offered. That day I had undercooked quiche with a side of hair and the shock of a $30+ bill for the two of us to have a very simple, unsatisfying breakfast. Since then I have repeatedly tried to open-mindedly visit and continually have made excuses for the poor service and over-priced mediocrity. I have found they carry a Brie and make a chocolate roll I enjoy plus some darn indulgent cupcakes, but I have learned not to expect too much quality of the other food. Yesterday I stopped in to buy a Naked Juice before work. I waited behind one other person for 6 minutes and wasn't so much as greeted. People generally have places to get to when they are up at 7am and they aren't staffed well enough to serve 2 people at once!? At least a glance up to acknowledge my existence! I loved the idea that Turtle Bread was going to be open just a few blocks from home. I had dreams of stopping and picking up coffee and a pastry on my way to work in the morning. I love the scholarly ambience of the place. Lots of wood. Photographs of on the walls. It is a peaceful, restful place, They make a lot of good things that I go there for specifically. At this time of year -- the pumpkin pie. It is the thickest, creamiest, tastiest in town. They also stock frozen pie crust dough which is very good and makes my pie baking a snap. Their soups are all good, especially the tomato basil. Their breads are great, of course, my favorite is the stirato. read more

After being utterly underwhelmed with the "service" at New French in Seward, I called Turtle Bread and not only did they have what I needed, it was inexpensive and the service was delightful. I have been to Turtle Bread on numerous occasions and have always been very pleased with their food. They have great, reasonably priced breakfasts and I have never been disappointed with their pastries. I do agree with one of the other reviewers about their coffee. It is bad. I have mentioned it to one of the managers but to no avail. There is so much great coffee out there right now, why not pair with one of the locals and buy some fresh roasted? I've been here quite often and it's not for the food, more for location. The food at this place isn't good enough to keep me coming back and the service isn't good at all. The staffs aren't friendly but rather snobby and could careless if your experience there is good or not. The only thing I like about this place is that it's a good place to do an interview since there are plenty of open seats. Otherwise there are better places for food and service. read more

The service is not good --- they have a very inattentive staff! The space is huge and could easily accommodate a large group. Absolutely agree with the previous reviewer on the outside seating--what happened? I was so excited to have Turtle Bread Company open up in our neighborhood and stop in as often as I can for soup, bread, sweets. I often suggest it to friends and neighbors. Just don't understand why the outside seating went away as this is so important to the flavor of a neighborhood spot. I've had friends who have dogs say they would love the outside tables so they could stop while out walking the dog. Bring it back, please, Turtle Bread Company! Can't say enough about the transformation you did with that building. Would love to see more activity. I notice that every establishment with outside tables are full the minute the weather gets nice. I have always been a fan of Turtle Bread, and I was so excited to see one come to this neighborhood. I am such a fan of their soup, being that there are so many vegetarian or vegan choices. Reading the other reviews, I now see how food is a bit pricey for what you get and the service issues. But, I have always over looked this. I love the interior. If you could have seen what this building looked like pre- makeover. It's amazing. One complaint is the outside look. Please find a way to get sidewalk seating back! You had it the first year you opened, and the place was always crowded...good business for you Turtle Bread. On a nice sunny day, we Minnesotians like to sit outside...for hours! I know it's a city issue? But I would make whatever changes there are to make it happen. Also, please remove your dumpsters right where customers walk into the restaurant. Gross! Maybe trim that aweful accident waiting to happen metal cover to the basement which is right where customers enter the restaurant. If you have to live with the eyesore, make it better with a planters or some landscaping to hide it. Come on, turtle bread...I want you to be a success...care a little more. read more

Stopped by for brunch. I had the pancakes, which were amazing. Thick and slightly sweet, I couldn't finish them! My only complaint was that the syrup was not pure maple, nor heated, but these pancakes were so good, I didn't use much syrup. My husband had an omelet. We got a baguette and chocolate roll to go. The chocolate roll was perfect. Exactly as they described, sweet without the overload of a piece of cake. Highly recommend. read more

The food is delicious. I walked in at 3 pm on a sunny autumn afternoon and there was almost no salad left, and only one mozarella sandwich. I stood there for at least a minute, and neither of the staff at the counter acknowledged me in any way. I asked if there was anyone to make me a sandwich and they said no. Very unfriendly. I have had this experience before; don't know why I keep going back. This Turtle Bread location has a reputation for poor and rude service. I know people who do not go there for this reason.
