In town for a concert and came across this little diner. Been in business for over 60yrs. Good comfort food. I had the "womb to the tomb"..an open faced double bacon chili cheeseburger. This is one of the worst restaurant experiences I have had in a long time. My mom and I stopped in for lunch today and the place was dead. We looked over the menu for a minute and placed our order. I decided to run to the bathroom while we waited and this was a big mistake. The bathrooms are absolutely disgusting. The smell like raw sewage, look as though they haven't been cleaned in months and didn't even have soap..just empty soap dispensers. It's easily one of the grossest bathrooms I've ever used and I've definitely been in some super gross ones in gas stations on road trips. The one positive thing about our visit was that the food arrived fast. I ordered the BLT and a bowl of Chili with spaghetti. The BLT which costs $4.95 a la carte was the saddest little sandwich I've ever seen. It had maybe two slices of bacon on it and that's it. It was so thin. They also use shredded iceberg lettuce which just fell off and made a mess. The chili looked like it was microwaved in the bowl it was served in based on the dry parts around the edges and the amount of steam the rolled out when I stirred it. That's not the worst part though. It was totally rancid. It tasted like straight vinegar. Who knows how long they had been hanging on to that batch of chili but it had spoiled and they STILL SERVED IT. It was disgusting. Look, I'm a chef. I know food. I've held a lot of jobs in food service so I don't throw around accusations about bad/spoiled food lightly. I wouldn't mention it if I wasn't absolutely sure. Anyway I won't be back. I've been in twice since the ownership change in 2015ish and last time wasn't great but today was their second chance with me and to say that they blew it is a colossal understatement. They need to get their shit together before they make someone seriously sick. I was delighted to come to this little spot, picked randomly by my friend who was visiting town. The charming diner atmosphere is akin to a much nicer, homier Waffle House - you can watch the cooks prepare food behind the counter, for instance. The ambience was great for people-watching the after-church crowd, and CNN was playing on flat-screens above the cooks--not distractingly, but a fine break if we had a lull in conversation. I ordered the biscuits and gravy with fruit, and my friend ordered pancakes. I wanted to add tots to my order at one point and was able to easily, thanks to the waitress checking on us frequently and courteously. The food was delicious, including the fruit salad--it met expectations by being nice and simple. This is not a bougie spot with amazingly thoughtful dishes, nor is it a diner with gigantic portions! Dishes are somewhat small so take advantage of the incredibly inexpensive and a la carte menu ($13 for the two of us). As for the negative reviews, a lot of them seem to pertain to their lunch food. Iconic. The Louisville Metro Landmarks Commission designated Twig and Leaf a historic landmark last year, and rightly so. The Douglas Loop would be unrecognizable if you headed north and didn't see the mid 20th Century modernist facade on this bend of Bardstown. Granted, it's not haute cuisine, and you'll pay a couple bucks more than one might normally expect for what is effectively diner food. But those slightly higher prices are completely consistent with the fact that this is a higher rent district, and the food is absolutely appropriate for the venue. Honestly, the two best things about this place are the fabulous vintage neon sign and the fact that I amuse myself to no end by calling it the "Twig and Berries" every time we drive by. Finally venturing in for breakfast the other day I was initially a little shocked at the dead interior with the fast food style booth seating. Sadly, the food matched the decor. Coffee was weak, omelet was tiny and not even heated up enough to have the cheese inside melt. Toast was slathered with butter flavoured oil, it certainly was not real butter. But the worst was the bacon. The smallest, thinnest, palest, most insulting order of bacon ever ordered. Yeah, its cheap. But sometimes you get what you pay for. I've been pretty unimpressed with this place.I remember it being way better in high school but maybe I was just young and stupid then. On my first trip here the place absolutely reeked of Pine Sol. It's great that they'd been cleaning but the smell was so pervasive and overwhelming that it was impossible to enjoy the food. The second time the service was terrible. We had to go up to the counter to get coffee refills, to get hot sauce, request the check, etc. The server was a sweet lady, just very inattentive. Favorite breakfast spot in the Highlands!! They have new ownership and it shows. New booths, floors, paint, this place is super clean and the food is always great. The Double Loop with bacon is always solid, but they also make a tasty flapjack. And I will always destroy one of their chicken fried steaks. Plus it's all very reasonably priced. This is one of those times I should have just trusted other Yelpers. But, curiosity killed the cat, and it nearly killed me at Twig and Leaf. We stopped in on a Saturday evening when I was driving by for the 1000th time, and HAD to try it out. Atmosphere: sterile and a little disconcerting. Although not actually dirty, the walls seem suddenly bare, extra furniture in the corner, and an over sense that this place will close up shop at any moment. Staff: the staff was friendly, sparse, and did not seem overly hygienic. Food: We split the chicken fried steak entree with mac 'n cheese and twig tatters. The chicken was very very thin and dry. The rest of the food was fairly bland. Value: Okay amount of food for the money. Unfortunately, fast food is a better bang for your buck. Overall, not worth the time. It wasn't bad. I've been by here a zillion times. I finally stopped because its right by Vines and Canines and we needed some dinner to go with our wine. Its a typical looking diner...no frills but very clean, bright, and inviting. Our server was kind and attentive. The menu is really big with a surprising variety, including vegetarian options like a veggie burger. They serve breakfast all day and offer several kinds of pies--all were just 99 cents a slice. The prices here were great. You could take your family and all eat a good meal for $25.00. I had a grilled cheese, cheese fries, and a slice of "cookies and cream" pie. The sandy was good and not too greasy, the cheese fries were ok but would have preferred regular fries...the pie was great. It was one of the best slices of pie I've had--and cheapest! Even the chocolate crust was good. I'd like to go back and try the pancakes! With such low prices and quick service, this is a great place to try out several items. I loved the location and made for a perfect stop. There really aren't many places out there like this anymore. read more

The Twig (as we called it in high school) has been an institution on Bardstown Road for a looong time. It was always kind of shabby looking but consistent in the food department (standard diner fare) and open 24 hours, making it a great late night spot after show or parties or wandering on Bardstown Road. A few years ago they closed for a sort time and reopened with new granite table tops and a cleaner look. They also close at night now which is okay by me, but probably bad news for bar hoppers. Lately we have come a couple of times with me and my husband and our baby girl in tow. It's becoming a nice little family ritual. We grab the corner table and get a reliable yummy diner breakfast for a good price. We enjoy the nostalgic feel, mismatched coffee cups, and friendly service. I'm pretty sure ownership has changed at least once but it still has the same cozy feel. Casual, cheap, and now cleaner and updated. I dig it. Long live The Twig! read more

I am very forgiving about many things that might go wrong when dining at a restaurant. However, there is one thing that I absolutely cannot forgive and that is laziness and half-assing things. When I walked in It seemed at first that the place wasn't open, it looked like it was still under construction. And maybe it is! Who knows. There are two display cases by the door that were empty. The floor was torn up in spots, in other areas the old linoleum was left but had serious wear to it. There was a tile wall behind the counter that had missing tiles. The pendant lights above the tables had been spray painted in a slipshod way and half the barstools had been "reupholstered" with this cover that was poorly sewn and ill fitting to the seat. And this, frankly, enraged me, and I hadn't even received my food yet. Of course the food matched perfectly to my already poor experience - everything was from a can, or frozen, or just cheap. I don't quite understand why you would go through the trouble of opening a restaurant (or any business for that matter) and do everything just half way. I wasnt expecting a "farm to table" experience, but when things seem lazy out in the open, I shudder to think what is going on in the back. You are on Bardstown Road for the love of Pete! Your old sign and history to the place only takes you so far, then you have to compete with everyone around you on this street. OK, my wife and I are suckers for cool vintage signs, and the legendary "Twig & Leaf" sign mentioned in other reviews drew us in. We were the only ones in the diner at the time, on a drowsy weekday afternoon, but somehow the service still managed to be sloooow. An earlier reviewer mentioned how perhaps people giving bad reviews were expecting Applebee's or TGIFriday's quality level of food. My wife and I both hate those places and find their food mediocre, but we've enjoyed our share of cheaper diner food and liked it just fine, so we had that sort of thing in mind. My wife ordered the "roasted vegetable lasagna." Doesn't that sound delicious? It did to her, too. Here's what showed up on her plate: something scraped out of a single-serving microwave dinner box with tiny specks of vegetables that certainly were not roasted, but actually pureed, mixed in, frozen, and reheated. It had the standard "veggie lasagna" white sauce with some mysterious ketchupy red sauce smeared on top. My wife tried to keep an open mind, took one bite, and started crying. She's not the weepy type, but the combination of hunger and terrible taste in her mouth was just too much. Now, after reading the above, one might be tempted to be discouraged, perhaps even start sliding into existential gloom and perhaps doubting one's faith. My meal experience proves there is indeed a merciful God. My fish sandwich was so hot that I burnt my tongue, thus shielding most of the awful taste of what little fish there actually was to the sandwich. We all know that the Filet-o-Fish at McDonald's is pretty terrible, but for 1/3 the price, we all know what we're in for. I would have paid the cost of this fish sandwich AND the cost of a regular FoF for something that good at a cool-looking restaurant like this, but no dice. My sandwich was accompanied by something resembling those cheap round hash browns but called something that was supposed to make them sound like delicious down home food. None of this was exaggerated...I wish it were. read more

For eye candy alone, I would give this place 4 or 5 stars. It has the vintage look that other places try to desperately to recapture. The neon sign out front is one of the best and most iconic signs in the city. Look up "diner" in the dictionary, and this is it. The 2 star rating is pretty much for everything else. I know the food here is suppose to be greasy, but boy, it is really, really greasy. I think, over time, most restaurants have made an effort to cook healthier (not healthy, but healthiER) and when one enters a greasy spoon these days, it hits like a ton of bricks. Later, it lays like a ton of bricks in the belly. The most disappointing of all is the atmosphere. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't good.... not what I wanted to feel in an old school diner. While the food was warm, the service was dry and slightly cool. No music playing. No hustle. Just a lot of nothing. As I ate, looking out the window, I saw more more fun going on at the bus stop and I felt my self wish I was waiting for a bus rather than eating at this restaurant. I've always wanted to experience this place and now I have. Would I go back? If others in my party wanted to, I would, but I doubt that I will personally make an effort to return... not unless this place gets worked over by Kitchen Impossible. read more

Stopped in after leaving another small restaurant because there was no place to sit. We were both a little worried about what we would get, but we both enjoyed our meals and the staff, just 2 people who I guess were one of the owners and a cook, couldn't have been nicer. I had the breakfast quesadilla and he had the biscuit and gravy platter with two eggs, sausage, and Twig Taters (tater tots). Everything was very good, the gravy was not runny and the sour cream for my quesadilla was extremely fresh. The cook was sure to point out they use Purnell sausage and it was obvious. They are now open 24 hours on weekends and show movies and sometimes have Xbox competitions. With the total price at $18.00, including a piece of chocolate cake, we'll certainly be going back. read more

A few summers ago my dad took my sister and I here for a late lunch. The food was practically inedible and the restaurant just seemed dirty/run down. I never intended to come back here. I not only had to endure the food that day, but also my dad's stories... Anyway, they've just been purchased by new owners, so I wanted to check them out to see if they've really improved, as they claim on their Instagram, in the Leo and on banners. Well, the food has been improved somewhat. My partner really liked his french toast, eggs and bacon and I liked my cheeseburger okay and the fries were actually pretty decent. The patty was probably frozen, but the bun and veggies seemed pretty good. The cheese was a slice of Kraft, if I'd have to guess. It might be a slight, SLIGHT notch above Waffle House quality, if that. The coffee was just sad. A little tea cup with lukewarm, instant like coffee. The prices were low, a fair price for what was received. The decor is nonexistent. The walls are bare and the bathrooms need a serious makeover. Its almost like walking in to a place that's been robbed. The only thing in the display case was a huge jug of Thousand Island dressing... So the verdict is: Their Instagram is highly misleading. When I entered, I wanted to leave immediately, but stayed because, who cares, I wanted a cheap burger and we were there. This place needs completely revamped and needs fresher food and a filled up display case! I'll probably head to Waffle House next time I want some cheap hangover food. read more

"The Twig" has out lived all other restaurants on Bardstown Road and there is a reason why they have. The food isn't 5 star by any means, but the prices are cheap. I have a feeling that most of the reviewers are people that expect Applebee's or TGIF quality type of food. What the hell do you expect? I know the food isn't spectacular, but it's not that bad. I love the decore and hope that it never changes. Has it ever changed in the last 50 years? Probably not. What to expect: basic diner food. Nothing high class or fancy. I love the Kentucky Hot Brown, which is good for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Go in have fun and walk out with some money left in your pocket. Great small town dinner feel! I really enjoyed the throw back feeling when you walk through the door! The service was prompt and friendly. I also got the opportunity to talk to the owner about food and she was very kind and friendly. She seems to be very determined to continue to update and improve her menu and restaurant. I was very surprised to see a roast beef Manhattan on the menu but I tell you it did not disappoint! The mash potatoes where great! Also rumor has it she is trying a new hot brown recipe for derby that I wouldn't miss. Overall I really have a soft spot for the small town dinner feel and this did not disappoint. This place was once spectacular. Actually, the family that owned it in the 1980's and early 90's did a great job. Food and service were both great. When they sold out, the new owners revamped the menu, and it was even better than before. Unfortunately, they sold it. The current owners have really let this place slide. TIny portions, cheap ingredients, and bad preparation. Other reviewers have said they thought the prices were cheap, but I don't really think so. The last time I went there, breakfast for two was over $20 before tip. Not worth it for what I got. Besides, doesn't $1.75 for a cup of bad coffee seem a little steep when you're acroos the street from Heine Bros.? Labor Day lunch outing. Was on Bardstown road picking up an item and stopped in for a quick bite. Nestled in the Deer Park neighborhood at the corner of Bardstown and Douglas, Twig and Leaf sits somewhat silently calling out to passers by. Decided on the twig and leaf burger, a double 1/4 pounder. The burger was not overly impressive and appeared to be a basic patty probably provided by Sysco. I would have liked to have seen a hand patty burger from a local diner over what was served. Overall, the food was good. They could use a through cleaning along the windows and refrigerator areas. I left smelling of food, so their vent hood could have been down. If you don't like smelling like food, may want to pass on them. read more

I have always passed this place and never thought to try it. The wait Sunday for brunch at North End was 30 minutes. So we decided to try Twig and Leaf instead. There was plenty of seating and the environment was very much diner. You could see the cooks and the wait staff was friendly. They also offer breakfast, lunch and dinner all day. The three people in my party (myself included) all got three different breakfast items. I got the breakfast quesadilla. I had never heard of anything like that, so I wanted to try it. I opted for a side of tater tots as well. The portions were great and so was the meal. The quesadilla had 2 eggs, bacon and cheese with sour cream and HOMEMADE salsa. Let me tell ya, that salsa was the bomb.com. All three of us were happy and pleasantly surprised by the salsa. It was chucky, thick and just the right amount of heat. My father-in-law built his own 2 egg omelet. He ended up eating some of my tater tots. He travels to Honduras once a month for a week at a time for work and raved on Twig and Leaf's salsa the entire meal. My man got the Southwest Scramble. The burrito was huge! It was the size of the plate lengthwise and thick. It came with a side of tater tots as well. The three of us ate, with coffee and tea for 28$. Not bad at all and fulfilling for sure. The few complaints I have is that the drinks were not filled up unless we asked. I was also a bit concerned with some health code violations...both cooks didn't wear gloves, and one had a massive beard that concerned me with hair.
