Do I give Twilite 2 stars for being such a dive I don't want to use their bathrooms, talk to their staff, or sit on their furniture or do I give Twilite 5 stars for realizing they are a dive & trying to keep in real? One of the oldest Dive bars in town, Twilite is notable for it's free, old-school jukebox, its photo booth ($3), and it's cash-only policy. This is sort of a moody, downbeat place at times, and is best visited with a few friends in tow. Still, you can meet interesting people here on a given night. I have been a customer of Twilite lounge for over 40 years since it was located on 200 South State Street.. Back in the late 60's and 70's twilite was frequented by many Police Officers (of which I was one). After moving east on 200 South I was a regular customer with many of my friends.. Then along comes John (bartender). Absolute rudest bartender I have come across in my entire life.. Twilite lists hours as being open until 2AM. Myself and friends were regulars every Saturday Night for several years, until John came along.. John is Rude every time you order a drink and actually loves to refuse service at last call. Then if he does serve you or you are served by another bartender John wants you to chug it down and leave. I hope management knows that John is costing their business customers with his attitude and laziness. If Management is wondering why many customers are leaving early it is so they can go to a club that treats you well until the legal closing time (2AM). Myself and my friends have found a new home for our fun and when John departs we may will return. My compliments to the Owner of twilite for being in business over 50 years... read more

The term "dive bar" gets thrown around quite a bit in the reviews of this place and often it is merited. If you're looking for a place to go out without getting dressed to go out, look no further. You'll also save some money. The one thing this place has that most dive bars do not is a crowd, although on a Friday or Saturday night I haven't found a bar in town that doesn't. Usually not having to wait for a drink and easily finding a place to sit are two of the bigger draws for me when it comes to my dives but I'll just accept Twilite for what it is - the closest thing to a dive bar I'm likely to get. I looked this place up for a cool, mellow, dive to go on a Friday night. It is in a great central location and easy to get to from downtown. I arrived, right, a very nice girl with black hair served me a drink, I think a Bulliet and soda with lemon, it was 4 $. I enjoyed my drink and checked the place out. I played a few songs on the jukebox which was cheap( or I thought) and talk to some interesting people. These people tell me that the jukebox is actually free! Then why the hell does it accept money!!!!! I feel as if I was stolen from! But, things got worse! As my drink emptied I returned to the bar for a refill, ( to drown the feeling of being raped by the owners of the jukebox) I order the same Bulliet and soda with a lemon from another bartender with ( excuse me for saying) an enormous nose and rimmed glasses, and he charges me 5$ !!!!! what the hell!!! I ask him WHY it was more and he tells me that it was 5$ take it or leave!! So I payed the extra dollar, drank my drink, and left, NEVER to return. read more

Twilite Lounge, to me, is the best spot in town for the younger crowd. The Bartenders (especially John and Connor, shout out to those guys), are kick ass and do their best when it's packed. If you're not a fan of cigarettes or having a bunch of drunk 20 year olds bump into you on their way to the bar/patio, maybe steer clear or head out before 11pm when it really gets busy. This bar, unlike most of the other bars around, get poppin' on weeknights! Anything after 10:30-11 you're bound to be sifting through people to get to either side of the bar. Hot bartenders, cheap drinks and a rad crowd, very diverse for Salt Lake. I didn't feel like I was in Salt Lake when I went there. Contrary to a previous review I actually have had a Manhattan there and it was excellent. They've got a great cocktail menu. Great bar, definitely divey, but it had everything I could ever want. Cocktails and beer without the pompousness of a cocktail bar and lots of cool people. They don't have red bull though so don't ask. I just had the worst time at the twilite lounge. It's sad, because I've been a former patron for many years. My partner and I went to play a game of pool, and literally, got bum-rushed by a crowd of people. We saw a pool table was open, because there were no people around and there were balls scattered on the table. We put our money in and racked the balls. All of a sudden, a crowd of people came in and insisted that their balls had been racked all the while, and therefore, we had no right to be on the table. They started touching and engaging my boyfriend. They were saying my boyfriend touched one of the women in the group (who had touched him first). We left in a hurry, because they were very confrontational and I was afraid for my boyfriend. Sadly, I will never go to the Twilite lounge again, even though it reminds me of the good ol' days. If you enjoy rude bar tenders that yell at you from the other end of the bar to, "show me your ID or get the F&*% out of here," then this is the place for you! After playing pool for about 3 hrs with some friends, I went to the change machine (close to the front door) to get some quarters. I can hear someone yelling, "I need to see your ID" but assume some more college kids have just walked in (I am over 40). Then I hear it again and see that the bar tender, who is half-way across the bar at the other end is yelling at me. I explain that I've been there for 3 hrs and am just trying to get change, maybe she could help me. To which she replies, "Can't you see I'm kind of F*&%-ing busy down here? Show me your ID or get the F&$% out!" So I left this "Divebar," translation = sh*%hole, and will never be going back. I'm not sure how many laws they are breaking but will recommend that the police visit regularly and find out. They had one employee, tending bar with a line of 50 people backed up to order drinks, trying to check ID's of every person walking in, which was a steady flow at 9:30pm on a Saturday night. There is no way this one person could effectively check ID's. I'm sure she was frustrated, but rather than take it out on your cash-paying patrons (yes, cash only in 2014, another big plus!) maybe you should chat with management or ownership about getting you some help. read more
