I was hesitant to try this place for coffee, given that it seems to cater to a variety of different interests. I'm wary of coffee places that advertise cocktails. But I happened upon it so I went in and ordered a cappuccino. There was one person working the bar, and she seemed either tired or hung over. Or maybe she was just overwhelmed since it's difficult to run an espresso bar with just one person. The first sip burned my tongue. As in it was way too hot. Eh.... not sure what the hype is about besides you can order alcohol with your coffee. I came about 30min before closing and ordered a Nitro Cold brew. This shouldn't be a huge deal right? since it's comes from a tap... wrong. I was charged 10+ dollars for a large nitro cold brew, but received a cold brew with no nitro, and the lady kept repeating that the shop is closing soon... basically trying to rush everyone out. I wouldn't be writing this review if the lady was honest and just told me that they didn't have Nitro at the moment. I would have opted for a regular cold brew or something from the fridge... but due to the lack of honesty i am not impressed. read more

Tried to order a expresso in this place, but that was terrible, burned, bitter, undrinkable. The server tried to adjust the machine for a few minutes, without success, and she acknowledged the coffee was stale. I then asked for my cash back, and had a hard time getting it back. When the manager finally came, she had this atitude, didnt even look at me. He was portentous and disrespectful, didn't say anything. The Calm and Collected is my favorite tea drink in all of Chicago. It's a lavender and green tea latte. It pairs perfectly with an almond croissant. Also, whenever I've come here, they're always either playing the Strokes or Paramore on repeat. On vinyl. It's amazing. read more

I absolutely love this place! The atmosphere is trendy and laid back, and the drinks are great (at least the one I had). I ordered a cortado. It was made very well, and even came with a tulip on top. I can't say I experienced everything, but I did the endless coffee cup for what I think was around $4. Good mug, good interactions with staff, the coffee was also fine. Maybe it was great coffee? I can't tell. Interior was as cool as it looks, Wi-Fi was not a hassle to use and was fast. I sat on a couch that was comfortable and used a table with my laptop on it, table was not great as it tilted when anything touched it and I spilled a little coffee. If I had to burn a couple hours again in the loop, I would come back and do it there again. read more

This quickly became our favorite coffee place downtown. Even your basic Americano was well-made. The folks behind the counter are fast and friendly. All those drinks produced by one barista! Great people-watching spot. Usually a lot of students from Washington College across the street.Would have been happy to bus our table, but no obvious facilities. read more

I feel like this place is going through some sort of identity crisis. It's clear that either the owners or managers change quite frequently because each time I walk in here, I get a different experience. I've recounted the changes in visits here in order of experiences (note: I've come to this place more often than the 3 visits below, and the below visits are spread out anywhere between a few weeks to even a few months.) Visit A: Prices were average (~$4 for a latte) and they had great baked goods brought in from favorite local Chicago spots. They charged extra for any flavored syrups or milk substitutes. Baristas were fairly friendly, quick, and efficient. Visit B: A happy change! The menu changed and prices dropped. Unfortunately they no longer carried local baked goods and made their baked goods "in-house". They were also the same price for much smaller items. Baristas were nicer but moved a bit slower. They did not charge extra for any flavored syrup or milk substitution (no more prejudice for those who are lactose-intolerant)! Their specialty and seasonal drinks were priced at around $5. Visit C: The dream quickly faded as prices shot back up- lattes are around $5 for a small cup and specialty drinks are $6 (!!!). They charge for flavored syrup but do not charge for milk substitution. The baristas now move even slower, and it's not unusual to wait 10-15 minutes after you placed your order for your drink during the morning rush. The quality of drinks have been consistent (5 stars), but the ever changing prices on their menu and the slow baristas have knocked off 2. read more

Husband and I went in the morning for coffee and pastries. Everything was good so when we wanted a snack in the afternoon, we came back to see if they have other options for lunch (pre-made sandwiches for example since the morning employee mentioned they prepare their food downstairs). I asked the server/barista "Do you guys have sandwiches here?" Instead of saying no, she opted to say "We're not that kind of coffee place" Uhhhh the Rude kind of place is the kind you're trying to be then??? I was pretty baffled. I've been to some both high-end and ghetto coffee shops in the country and across the globe, but this pretentious disrespectful attitude is next level. The employee in the morning (6am weekend shift) was nice. But the afternoon 3pm crew needs to be re-trained. The pastries and caffeine drinks are good so that deserve a good rating but the passive aggressive attitude leaves a bad taste in my mouth so much that it's just no more than an average visit. I wouldn't return but I guess based on that attitude, doesn't seem like they want my business. read more

I loved EVERYTHING about this little coffee shop. Warning: it's attached to the Virgin Hotel, but that doesn't diminish it's hipster feel. They offer a great honey latte that provides a touch of sweetness, a variety of Elton John tunes to keep the mood high, and alcoholic drinks (after a certain hour)! read more

Small. Great location. Awesome interior. Very good coffee. I have to admit, I'm not a big fan of Bowtruss coffees. They tend to lack some balance in my opinion, but they certainly aren't bad. I have been hesitant about writing this review since I discovered this place last week because I don't want it to get overcrowded...but this is MY GEM! Such a cute, sweet, funky coffee shop in the middle of all the chaos of the loop. Great coffee, great sweets, great service. There are 2 Mac computers available for use. There's a bar area for sitting WITH outlets. There's cute benches and tables WITH outlets. Like the ambiance of this place overall and the drinks are amazing but the service is slow. Took them over 10 minutes to heat up and serve croissants which made no sense since there were three people working and no customers in line ahead of us. This place is incredibly hard to find. That aside, any place that specializes in both coffee and booze can get no less than four stars for me. So take that into consediration when reading this review. Once you make your way in they are super friendly and it is a nice atomspehre. I could literally sit here all day if I had any type of work to do. I had a pourover, and while it wasn't one of the best pourovers I've had it wasn't too bad. Came for a glass of wine after work with a friend. Cozy ambiance, but very expensive compared to the menu that was on their website! Site said all wines were 8 and I was charged $16 for one glass. Rude service and was out of every single tea they have on their menu except green tea and black tea - of which the black tea had 95% ice. For 6 dollars, it seemed incredible that they would be out of every single tea options here. Lady working was rude and seemed to not want to be there. London Fog was equally as bad, would never come here again. Great space though, a pity poor service and equally poor quality would ruin it. read more
