I have been trying to make sure I have the energy to write this review, because I need to be able to fully express the awesome-ness of this restaurant! I have been wanting to visit Typhoon Asian Bistro since my trip to Boston earlier this year. Unfortunately, I didn't plan well enough ahead and couldn't get in: so, when i was in Brookline a few weeks ago and we were searching yelp for a place to go for dinner, Typhoon Asian Bistro jumped out, I knew we had to go! There was only two of us, I figure that was why we were able to get a 8:30pm reservation on a Saturday night, when I was only calling at 4pm same day; that was amazing! When we finally got in, we had to wait about 15 minutes for our table, which was totally fine because the sushi bar is uber chic and comfy all at the same time. The bartender was really friendly and informative about their house cocktails as well as their wines by the glass. I enjoyed a lovely glass of Spanish rose and my friend and I devoured this incredible edamame they brought out complementary while we waited. Super yumo - i loved the edamame and my wine combination. When we were seated our server came over and gave a brief rundown of the menu and the recommended ordering style/routine. We opted to order what our eyes fancied and enjoyed every savory bite! Here's our delightful dishes: Tuna Steak with caviar - OMG! To die for... seriously! Hamachi-kama - so simple, yet perfected flavor and spice! Baked salmon Maki - seriously, someone reviewed that it will "change your life".... I second that sista! House special roll - don't remember what it was - but I remember loving it! For dessert - ok, I don't usually do dessert, but I figured "what the hell", if I am splurging, I'm splurging full-blown, all-out! The amazing dessert was beyond incredible - I have never tasting anything like it in my life! It was the French Flan, don't know why "french flan" but the Flan served here was very smooth and heavy espresso flavored caramel sauce. I fell in love with that dish, and thought in my head of ways I could attempt to re-make it at home... very doubtful. read more

Been celebrating Valentine's dinner with my wife here for years, the recent experience was amazing. Other years we were sat very close to our next table neighbor, so close we could reach for their food when they look away, which is normal for any good restaurants in this high end section of Boston. This year, we were buried in orchids, seriously buried! Our table was seperated with our neighbor's by a lusty long box of orchids. There were so many orchids boxes randomly spaced out and filled up the dining room. My wife & I enjoyed our Valentine's dinner to its max. Food here is always great, its value is always there. There were many new dishes added to its menu, I especially love the $25 filet mignon section. I personally think that there is no other Japanese restaurants in Boston offering filet mignon on their menus & that low priced. My wife had the seafood dish called "la mer", which she saw from the next table. One giant lobster tail, some scallops & shrimps with asparagus. The dish looked great that reminds us of our honeymoon in Paradise island, especially the red lobster tail sticking out amongst the seafood, only different was its taste. Comparing to the usual butter as dipping sauce, this dish was cooked with "garlic lemon sauce", a much advanced ingredient, even for Legal Seafoods. The cocktails were also top notch. I'm not a fan of sushi, but this spot got me hooked. They call him "Spiderman" there at Typhoon, a very nice sushi chef who speaks broken English, but enough to introduce me to his Baked Salmon roll which has some crunchy crabmeat on the inner part, outer part of the roll is some baked salmon and some sweet sauce. The best part is the spicy mayo that drops here and there to confuse your taste as you hunt around the pate. Well, that was cooked. Now, the Spicy Lobster plate we had was absolutely delish. Strange at first, but after my first bite, I took the whole plate. As described on the menu, "steamed lobster tail and spicy mayo rolled on the inside, outside rolled with three tobikos." Maybe it makes sense to you guys, but to me, not yet. My boyfriend ordered that. After having the first bite, which is very juicy, tasty, and crunchy, I knew right away that I would trade my Teriyaki Steak with his Spicy Lobster. The small eggs on the outside, looks like caviar, are so tasty. He ended up with my entree and I had his. The service and decor here are not very oriental, it's a mixture of European and Oriental. The water fall wall with candles, the arts on the wall, and the scented candles in the ladies room, great touch! Last time I experienced this quality was the Ritz in Montreal. read more

Made it here for a friend's birthday. I had mixed expectations given the reviews here, but after having been I would have a hard time returning - even for another birthday invitation. The Experience: We were a group of 7 and went on a Friday evening around 8pm. It wasn't very busy although a few small groups did trickle in throughout the time we were there. Aside from the younger guy who only took our order, it seemed none of the other employees there understood much English. Definitely not the upscale, luxurious, dining establishment their website tried to portray it as. It was decent, but nowhere near outstanding enough to warrant what they charge. Details: The menus were notably well-used and dirty, 2 of us laughed at the burn holes we found on ours. The food was decent, but nothing to write home about. The waitress's refilling our glasses every time the water level dropped a few centimeters (perhaps to compensate for the small serving portions?) was annoying. The bathrooms are two single stalls - one for men, one for women. The total came to around $300 for the 7 of us ($40+ per person), which didn't feel justifiable for what we ordered, the service we received, or the place in general for any reason other than their location imo. This place's sushi is just delish. Usually sushi is served tasteless to prove that the fish are fresh. But Typhoon is very different. Not only that you can taste the delicate textures of fish, but you can enjoy them fresh and delish here. When we ordered sashimi samplers, it hooked us to order more from the sushi list. The fish came out so fresh that we just had them without any wasabi-soy. Then our server suggested the sushi specials from the pictures hanging down from the ceiling of the sushi bar, we were stunned. The fact is that we didn't know this place has a lot to offer its clients. So we ordered the blazing miso salmon roll and watched the chef blazed it in front of our eyes.. wow. We slowly enjoyed the bites in pleasant silence! It was worth that 30 minutes wait for three seats at the sushi bar. Although the chefs didn't talk to us much (they were very busy), we would definitely come back for more since there were many more we didn't have room to try. One thing I would suggest to you guys: make reservation a few days in advance and arrive 5 minutes early. We lost our reserved table 'cause we were 10 minutes late, which is very understandable when we saw the line and the hostess was sweating! read more

By the end of my meal here, I felt completely spoiled. As a fan of Pan-Asian cuisines, my friend was crazy about the idea of trying out Typhoon Asian Bistro, so we decided to celebrate her birthday with a dinner here. The service was professional but not stuffy and the food was amazing, but you definitely pay for what you get here. Our servers, yeah more than two to assist 18 of us, were really friendly, approachable, and attentive. They were obviously knowledgeable about the menu, but weren't snobby about the food at all. I felt totally comfortable asking them what "live lobster" sashimi was! We chose the Exceptional wine pairing dinner: a multi-course meal pre set for parties ($95/person). You get hot and cold dishes, a sushi sampler, and an awesome dessert with generous portions of matching wines. Not too much to get you drunk, but enough to keep you warm. If you have any allergies or distastes, they'll honor them in choosing your menu. The timing and explanation of courses could have been awkward, but they managed it impeccably. By the time we left, we were stuffed and happy (and our wallets all the lighter for it...). read more

This restaurant is a treasure. None of the Back Bay nonsense. The food is amazing; the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. We were actually told to wait one and a half hour because it was already 8pm when we arrived (without a reservation) but someone else came running into the street and told us to come in and they would make a table for us in 15. That, my friends, is awesome. And then a member of our group spilled a glass of wine all over the table and we felt like total jerk-offs but it was all good! The servers, like 5 of them, came right over with paper towels, club soda to remove wine stain, new tablecloth, another set of table settings, and the most impressive part is within quick seconds, they disappeared! Really disappeared. They made us feel absolutely normal, no more "total jerk-offs" to our neighbors, who were staring at us seconds earlier. I'm not usually a big fan of cozy 'dark' restaurants (to me that usually means crowded and loud) but they do it right at Typhoon, plus perfect background music for such an ambience. Be prepared to spend $18-$25 per entree. It's worth it. read more

My friends and I have been dining at Typhoon since we first moved to Boston in 2002. This place isn't for everyone. If you're looking for cheap dishes to get by, Typhoon doesn't have anything like that. That would be the Pru's food court. Every time we want a relaxed sit-down Asian dinner with a glass of wine, Typhoon is the place. Unlike other Asian places, even PF Chang's, Typhoon serves its wines and cocktails in correct glassware. This tells a lot about a restaurant too. I'm sure some of you don't even know what I'm talking about, but you will, eventually. As for the menu, it is huge and has many options to choose from Thai spicy dishes to Vietnamese vermicelli bowls to Chinese Kungpao chicken, and they specialize in sushi. Sushi is unbeatable here. You can't go wrong with sushi chefs who having been practicing sushi for over 35 years. We sat at the sushi bar last Saturday and the "off-menu" specials were amazing. The Green Dragon, Red Sox maki, too many to mention here, but they were great with our warm sake. read more

I had to make an account just for this. This place is so horrible I would never recommend it. All of the workers seem to be out of order. I came here about 3 4 days ago. They seem to be either shot up on drugs, and the females are just too loud and annoying. They talk in their own language, which scares me as if they are plotting something. My server was this guy named Deven. I did not like him at all. He ran to my table with arms up and waved his hands as if he were a fairy. He gave me a creepy introduction. The only thing on my mind was dashing out the door, but since he poured my water, I cannot really leave. He took my order and came back out to talk to me for countless hours. He cannot stop scratching his beard or playing with his hair. It seemed like he was into me. The bell dinged and he came back to the kitchen. THANK GOD. He came back to me, gave me my food and then bowed to me. Since I was an Asian male, I assume. Was this dude shot up on crack or something? read more

Typhoon is a great place to go if you have a lot of people with you because there is such a wide selection to choose from. The place is modern but not what I would consider sleek or minimalistic: people have already pointed out the waterfall and some of the wall decorations seem out of place but it is definitely no hole-in-the-wall. The table setups are very upscale and the menus are refined. The only qualm I have about this place is that it can get too dark. I love dark, lounge-type feels in restaurants but its kind of a problem if I have to rely on candlelight to read the menu. The sushi is quite good considering its not really a Japanese/sushi restaurant. I really like the Chinese dishes here because they offer the same dishes as a fast-food Chinese restaurant but seem much less cheap, probably because they are presented nicely and they are never overpoweringly sweet or salty. Its a great place to have dinner and pre-game before going bar-hopping. read more

This place is my all time favorite Sushi restaurant ever. I have been going to this place with my parents since I was in high school. The Vietnamese pancake is crispy and tasty, the beef noodle soup comes in many different styles, and the sushi choices are just endless. My mom loves the Dragon roll, it's a thick roll roll with eel, cucumber, crabstick, and diffrent color tobikos. There is also another dish called Volcano which a giant California roll with baked seafood on top with a sparkling candle to make it look like a volcano. Another delicious spicy roll is the baked salmon maki that is topped with creamy and spicy Japanese mayo and unagi sauce. My brother comes here for his favorite, the vegetarian paradise, which is just some vegetables and fried tofu with brown sauce but it's so delicious that he must get it every single time. Sitting at the sushi bar and wondered if I should order off of the menu or go for sushi chefs' special creations. So I went for some specials and a few on the sushi list. The sushi was amazingly fresh and tasty. The quality of this cozy place is outstanding. From the dark stone waterfall-wall to its dark red lanterns that blend nicely with its beige walls, bamboo-wood accents, the background romantic European music.. etc, makes the atmosphere so very comfortable. The service was gentle and nice, the drinks are strong and bold, the food was amazingly delicious and straight forward as explained on its menu. I got the best for my money here. Try the chef's special "ebi-tobiko"..or something like that. Which was some crabmeat and tobiko baked on top of a shrimp... it was a little spicy, but rich in flavors with the shiso leave at wraps up the whole bite. read more

Wow. Had an amazing dinner experience here at Typhoon. Did not know much about this place or what to expect but ended up coming here for a business dinner. The food here is terrific, very well executed and with perfection. We tried a myriad of things from the baked ebi tobiko to pieces of toro, salmon and other sashimi...all ridiculously orgasmic to the senses. For main courses, we tried the Thai steak which was probably one of the best tasting pieces of meat I have had. Grilled salmon dish was only decent thing that was not particularly special, but good nonetheless. Definitely an expensive spot, so as long as you are prepared to spend the money, the food here is actually awesome. In my opinion, Typhoon is way better than other Japanese restaurants around. This was one of the best overall dining experiences I've had in a long time. I was here Friday night and although the place was pretty full we were able to get a table for 2 without a reservation and more importantly, without the attitude you often get for even having the audacity to try to eat somewhere without a reservation! Everything was perfect. From the attentive wait staff, to gorgeous decor, to delicious food to prices . I will say I really enjoyed the sushi that we've shared ( the sushi boat)and the dessert more than my entree. For dessert we shared the Typhoon Fried Banana (Battered then fried fresh banana topped with iced cream and chocolate sauce) which tasted delicious. Five Stars for Typhoon, the most fabulous Asian restaurant in Boston, and it's also one of my favorite restaurants in Back Bay. I've been here manytimes, with coworkers mostly, family and friends. I have nothing but good things to say about Typhoon. A great dining experience in every aspect. I usually sat very close to the waterfall, which I felt so cool. what I had last night was Spicy Scallop Maki for appertizer, The Lobster And Fish Sashimi, and Thai Steak for main courses, the fish could never be fresher. I also enjoyed the Typhoon Fried Banana for dessert, and I sure you cant never find this special dessert in anywhere else. Great staff, fast service in a very friendly and warm atmostphere. Firstly, I am from Boston, and I will not rate places five stars unless they are worth....I would lose my Yelp credibility....This place is grand! With an amazing design! Spectacular! I had my quarter of a century bash dinner here and had the most amazing time.I can say that the decor is the first thing that amazed me--loved it! It takes a tremendously imaginative and talented person to create an atmosphere like this--which keeps you looking ahead to see what's around the corner and wondering what will astound you next. Me and my boyfriend's favorite dish was the Sizzling Thai Steak. we almost had it everytime we came. I had a delicious dinner at Typhoon! We ordered a variety of different rolls and the hamachi appetizer, and all were amazing. The ingredients tasted fresh, and I have to give a special mention to the amazing spider roll - it was so unique. The restaurant itself is so beautiful and elegant, and is really nice if you're looking for a chic and upscale sushi dinner. The servers were very friendly, but I do have to say the food did take quite a long time to come out. But other than that, no complaints! I enjoyed my dinner here - the full experience was very enjoyable, ranging from the gorgeous aesthetic of the restaurant to the great food itself. read more

I had my first Blazing Salmon maki last night and was very impressed, just like other viewers are "yelping" about. Unique and delicious! I ordered the miso soup and Blazing Salmon maki as starters and Typhoon Pho as my main. The price was very reasonable, the soup was awesome, the fired sauce on top very tasty, but the caviar was the most amazing part! it was fatty but not too fatty. crunchy but not too crunchy. it was the best piece of sushi I've ever had in a long time. It made me want to work there so I can enjoy it more often. read more

One of the best restaurants I've ever tried! Everyone, from the hostess to the owner to the sushi chef, was so welcoming and helpful. I had some friends in from France and the staff went out of their way to accommodate us - splitting up all of our dishes so we could sample everything, taking us to the kitchen to meet the cook, and even after the hostess had cut her finger and was on her way to the hospital, she stopped by to make sure we were enjoying ourselves.
