U-Chun is one of a few food stalls located within the H-mart Korean supermarket in the Little Ferry plaza. This is my husband's go-to spot, and it's easy to see why. Each of the stalls kind of have their own niche, and U-Chun firmly occupies the soup and stew sector of Asian/Korean food. Most of their menu options are served on a hot plate or stone bowl, which is meant to keep your food hot and bubbly as you feverishly blow on and consume your meal. Placing an order is a cinch, even for non-Koreans who can ask for menu items by number. Hang onto your receipt afterwards because it'll have your order number. An automated voice will helpfully announce ready orders (by restaurant name and order number) over the loudspeaker so you don't have to hover in the immediate vicinity. Given the number of items on their menu and how limited their space is, it's impressive they can turn out items as well and as quickly as they do. So far, we've tried the bulgogi bibimbap, with is topped with a sweet soy marinated meat and meant to be mixed with veggies and an optional gochujang sauce serving. It's decent, though I have a pet peeve about hot stone bibimbaps that don't achieve the crunchy burnt rice bottom. I liked far better the spicy chicken stew, which is chock full of tender braised chicken and tender potatoes in a fiery stew. After a few loops around the food court, I picked U Chun because I was in the mood for some soup, and I saw they had seolleongtang, which is a beef bone broth. I've been meaning to try it so this was the perfect opportunity. I ordered the one with sliced beef and noodles. This came with a cup of rice and some banchan. The banchan was kimchi, cucumbers, and some peppery daikon one (which I did not care for). The broth itself was very good. It's soothing and seems like something that would be good to drink if you were sick or hungover. There were very little noodles in it, which I didn't mind because I actually liked eating the soup with the rice. The beef had no more beef flavor, I assume because they use it to make the broth. For those who follow my posts, will see that I have been trying to find a new place because they closed down and I was very sad. Oh my goodness, it is a very close version if not the version that I loved, missed, and adored. However, I was getting a lot of sesame oil for some reason so that was a bit off. However, it was still better than the other cold noodle places so this is for now on my cold noodle place to go to. I imagine it is difficult to run a restaurant from an H-Mart food court because you are pressured to run a fast food-like establishment with cheap and quick bites. U-Chun does a good job of this overall. The food came out very quickly. They offer a number of pretty good soups - their tofu soup is decent, inexpensive and has a good amount of tofu and other things inside. I got a combination plate with galbi and they really skimped on the galbi (it was tiny!) but I guess you can't expect much from a food court stand. Added Grilled Pork Belly to my favorites! As other dishes, its not-overly-seasoned porky was served perfectly cooked with minimal oil in the pork. Onions on the base on top of hot pan was a great touch to have them absorb the oil from above, at the same time lightly cooked from the pan below. The friendly owner provided me with home-grown Minari Muchim, whose spice was well paired with the pork bellies. Highly recommended 5+. read more

I've tried several dishes so far, my go to dish is yukgaejang, which is a spicy soup with shredded beef and scallion, but I also enjoy their other dishes such as cold noodles, seafood pancake and other dishes. I honestly haven't tried one dish that I don't enjoy. The order process is fairly straightforward- you order first and pay, then when they call the number on your receipt, you can go pick it up your food. When you finish your food, you will bring your tray back to the restaurant, don't leave the tray and dishes on the table. I did like that it was It wasn't a long wait and the food was piping hot so I had to be patient. The dish had a ton of flavored meet, the egg, green onions, and a few other veggies with rice on the bottom. It was actually a LOT of food for a very reasonable price. It came with a sauce and a little tray of toppings (I think) but the dish was really super flavored on its own. The vendor is located right inside of the Little ferry H Mart. Located one of the corners of the food court, you can get a bunch of different dishes here including the beef bone soup (which we had) and Korean BBQ ribs. They give a nice little selection of banchan sides and rice with the soup. Well I thought it was a little bland, the family really likes the beef bone soup flavor. You Chun was my favorite Korean restaurant in NJ for many years, their legendary mulnaengmyeon (cold noodle soup) was so good and refreshing that I used to go almost every week during the summer to satisfy my craving. The new You Chun has been renamed U Chun, and became a small food court restaurant but their menu hasn't changed much and the quality is still consistently excellent. I was excited to find out that this place is the same You Chun that closed in Pal Park. The menu seems similar; however, the food is not quite the same. I got seafood scallion pancake and there was a pool of grease. Some slices hardly had any seafood in it, let alone scallion. I also ordered soft tofu soup with kimchi , which seems a little bland. I think they used the beef bone sou as base, which gives it richer broth, but not much kimchi. Perhaps I have to stick to their signature dishes like naengmyun or bibimbop. I can't stop ordering the squid dolsotbap here. It's just spicy enough for a mild kick, and the squid is tender, not rubbery. If you do it right, you'll get the crispy rice at the bottom of the bowl when you're enjoying the end of your delicious meal. read more

I absolutely love this little place. It's one of the food stalls inside the new H-Mart in Little Ferry. Despite what some others have said about the prices and portion sizes, I don't agree. I think their prices are totally appropriate and I've never gone away hungry. My favorite item. The one I keep going back for, is the Bibim Naengmyeon (#17 on their menu). For those who don't know the dish, it's made with cold, chewy buckwheat and arrowroot noodles in a icy cold broth, with grated radish, sliced Asian pear, sliced cucumbers, a hard-boiled egg and a delicious gochujang based spicy sauce on top. It's served in a cold metal bowel, and comes with hot mustard and white vinegar on the side. I use a bit of the vinegar, but not the mustard. I do however, always ask for some extra spicy sauce. It's the ideal Korean dish for a hot summer day (although I could eat it year round). The service is friendly and the food comes up quickly. If you're shopping in H-Mart, or even just in the area, I highly recommend U Chun, and definitely try the Bibim Naengmyeon! read more
