There are still a bunch of seats at the counter where you can watch the chefs make the food which is always fun. My favorite part about this udon spot are their combination sets. I am the type of person who likes side dishes and having variety with my meal. Makes me feel like I'm getting more bang for my buck. So they have a bunch of different rice dishes that come with a bowl of hot or cold udon. My go to combo is always either spicy tuna over rice or negitoro (fatty tuna w/ scallion) over rice. The tuna dishes come with ginger, wasabi and soy sauce and you can also choose which udon comes with it (default is plain; it'll cost a few extra dollars). The lady helping us was very nice and friendly. Got a nabeyaki udon and it was very tasty. It was also my first time trying this kind of dish. Very interesting. It is undo noodles cooked with vegetables like spinach and shiitake mushroom and meat like chicken and an egg in a clay pot. My friends recommended this place, so I've got to try on Friday. Been there with a group of 5 around 2PM , we got seated right away and it wasn't too cold to sit their outside seats. This tiny 20 seat spot is a sweet spot in my stomach. Was brought here to give them a try and I didn't know what to expect; it's certainly tiny and sometimes you just don't know what to expect... But sitting down and looking around their open kitchen, I was impressed with all that had lined up; they had enough kitchen equipment to server a dining room 4 times the size and more, but it was for just their 20 seat place. 5/5 Pork Dumplings $5.95 were really good, fresh tasting, skin not thick at all and the meat inside really tasty. 3/5 Short Ribs $8.95 were a little chewy and tough. Wouldn't order this again since I've had better at other places. The sauce was good but still it couldn't help the get through the chewing part. 5/5 Seasoned Tofu $7.75 was excellent; the simplicity of this healthy dish works wonders especially on a cool afternoon. 5/5 Negitoro Don Set $11.75 was excellent; super fresh and tasty and came with udon noodles where I chose the cold variation instead of the hot one. In either case, you can't beat this dish and value. Their udon noodles were done to perfection, excellent, the best I've had. If I lived closer to this place, it would be part of my daily grind; food was mostly all excellent and served at a really fast pace; surely there weren't many people there at the time we went but the time it took them to prepare our order was litterally 5 minutes for some things, maybe a few more minutes for the others. When you first walk in, there's some counter seating along the bar where they cook then a few small tables in the back as well. There's usually a few people waiting if you come for dinner in colder weather but the line moves fast and the food is worth the wait. While their menu may seem small, there's actually a ton of variety - all kinds of udon (both hot & cold), rice, appetizers, etc. My go to is usually one of the sets on the last page, they come with some kind of appetizer/rice and a bowl of plain udon. Cash only restaurant with a more of a hole in the wall vibe. We were seated immediately on a Friday dinner time. Ordered curry & rice to share, udon x tempura set and udon x chicken katsu set. The rice in general felt over cooked and dense :(. The curry was delicious, the tempura was perfectly light and crispy, and the chicken katsu also was light and crispy on the outside (without being super hard/rough in texture) and tender and soft on the inside. The udon was less impressive but still was good - just expected a wow worthy udon as the restaurant is named after their dish. That being said, it's a quick place to grab a bite (I recommend dining indoors as outdoors is so loud with people smoking outside) with affordable pricing on their combo sets (priced around $15-17). After spending a couple months living in Tokyo, I can say with certainty that these udon noodles are the closest thing I've found in NYC to the udon bowls I've had in Japan, in terms of price, quality, and experience. Located in the heart of St. Marks, this tiny udon parlor is reminiscent of open kitchen udon counters in Japan which sit only about 15 people max. I love the intimacy of sitting and watching the chef skillfully cook the noodles and assemble my bowl just one feet in front of me. It is an absolute pleasure to watch them quickly and gracefully prepare my meal with no wasted movements; their ease is a reassuring sign that they've been at this for a long time. My go-to is their kara-age udon. It's simple but addicting: chewy udon noodles in a light broth laced with flavorful notes from the freshly fried chicken thigh pieces put in moments before. The udon's texture is superb and the fried chicken is tender and juicy with a slight crunch. It still surprises me that this bowl only sets me back $6.50. In the summertime, I usually opt for one of their cold udons. The bukkake udon and zaru udon are both fantastic. All in all, you can't go wrong with any of their udons. I've had their rice dishes before but strictly prefer their udons. Just pick one with a topping you think you'll enjoy and watch the magic happen. I got the gyudon and udon set for $10.50 and it was so much I had to get help to finish haha. The gyudon was very flavorful and the udon was the smoothest noodle I have ever tried with a very tasteful broth. The ambiance was cozy but due to the limited amount of seating, the service and atmosphere felt rushed so it's not a type of place you can stay for too long. This place is cash only, but never have I had a bad meal here. They're strict in their rules: $7 minimum per person, generally will kick you out once you finish your food, but it is what it is, especially when this place is so popular. For about $12, you can get any set on the back ofthe menu, which includes your choice and a bowl of cold or hot udon (both are good, depends what you want). My favorites are the spicy tuna don set, Hamburg steak set, and the karaage set. You'll be so stuffed no matter what you get. The cabbage "salad" that comes with your meat side is so good including the sauce, but the sauce is made out of peanuts so beware people with peanut allergies. Udon West reminds me of a walk in dive restaurant in Ebisu, Shibuya. It's a place where the food is inexpensive, delicious and quick. You can't go wrong with a udon and tuna don set for $11. The broth has a clean finish and isn't heavy. The spicy beef and kimchee udon is ok, but I would have preferred all the other dishes I saw in front of people. Save you money, or just go to 7-Eleven down the street and get yourself a bowl of instant noodles (they have hot water if needed) and buy some Japanese toppings from Sunrise market a block away and make your own udon meal. Came in at 7:30pm Saturday, no wait, plenty of seats at the bar. No one asked where to seat us so I just took my ass to an empty seat. Chef gives us the menu and the pictures of everything looked pretty good. Ordered the Gyoza combo that came with udon and a bowl of rice. $8.95. You have to get your own water from the water station on the side. No service whatsoever. Watching the chef cook with his bare hands, how appealing. There were two chefs, one manning the udon station (had gloves on), and the other manning the frying pan (the one with no gloves on). I thought to myself maybe the heat will kill off the germs when he was cooking. Sometimes looking at chefs cook is cool, but it also gives you the truth about what they are cooking with. I've watched the cook take out a premade, frozen gyoza package, opened it and just laid it on the frying pan. The frying pan from what it looked like USED to be a nonstick frying pan, but after years of use, you can just tell that the non stick coating wore off long ago, I believe a lot of people say after the nonstick coating wears off it can be cancerous. After seeing that the gyoza was not fresh or house-made AND an fugly frying pan, my appetite went down hill from there.... OK the so gyoza was frozen...but I expected the udon to be fresh...nope it was also premade and prepackaged and frozen yet again!? What kind of shit place is this. When the meal came, the udon tasted okay, the broth was very watered down but udon itself was soft. Gyoza tasted like it should but I couldn't tell if the black skin was from the frying of the gyoza itself or from the peeling nonstick coating from the frying pan.
