This was a fun place to visit. We stopped in during their soft opening as the grand opening is going to happen in early February 2023. We stopped for dinner at Udon Yama and ordered a variety items. We had the pork katsu curry, croquette tempura, chicken thigh tempura, shrimp tempura, onion tempura, mushrooms tempura, nikutama and sweet potato tempura. Everything was done perfectly. Nothing was greasy and we walked out of there satisfied. We will definitely be back the next time we're visiting as there are other places to try and will be back for more tempura. read more

This place looks just like maragume but they are more expensive and have less tempura options. I would say if you don't like standing in long lines and are more interested in the udon than the tempura, you should give this place a try. It is very tasty but I do think once the food hall fully opens they might have to make a price change to seriously compete. But it's definitely worth a try! read more

My husband and I shared a tempura zucchini ($2.50 for a huge piece!), $2.50 for an egg tempura (perfectly cooked with a runny yolk inside!), $9 large lemon cold udon (super refreshing and light) and $2.25 extra udon noodles. It was filling and delicious, and though I still cringe at eating indoors, we were able to eat in less than 10 minutes and it wasn't very crowded. I saw from a food blogger that STIX Asia just had opened, where the former Waikiki Yokocho used to be, so I decided to check it out one Friday after work. Many of the restaurants aren't opened yet, their grand opening is scheduled for sometime in February but there were about 10 places open at the time we went. I had been craving udon so I decided on Udon Yama. The place was completely empty so I wasn't sure if it was even open at first. I decided to get the cold Bu udon and as I was checking out I decided to ask if there was any kamaaina discount and the worker said I could get a shrimp tempura for free. Wow, what a great deal! I always have to remember to ask for kamaaina discount in Waikiki because most places have something. The Bu udon was good, noodles were a little more on the chewy side and the tempura was light and not oily but it wasn't hot. Overall not a bad alternative to Marugame. read more

I love Udon and couldn't wait to try Udon Yama. There was no line and staff was very friendly. I ordered an large Niku Udon with a shrimp tempura and fried chicken on the side. The noodles were chewy, thick and delicious and the Tsuru (broth) was authentic flavor wise, made with quality dashi. The broth, however, was luke warm which I was not a fan. We dined at 2pm so the broth IMO should've been hot as the shop was open for a few hours. The tempura was good, not oily, and I was told was complimentary for Kamaaina... a plus! The fried chicken was not to my liking though as it was peppery with large grains of black pepper which is not traditional Japanese. I'm sure they're working out the kinks since I visited opening week, however, I ordered a large and was mistakenly given a regular portion... see the additional small bowl in my picture that was given after I confirmed my large order. I'm sure Udon Yama will be a hit once they get rolling, and I do look forward to trying it out again. read more

Better alternative to Marukame! It's in Asia Stix which is what they've rebranded the old Yokocho. It's on the left when you come down the main entrance. Same style as marukame where you stand in a cafeteria style line and choose the udon style and size and broth and then also grab fried foods like tempura. Not having to wait in an interminable line was a huge advantage over marikame. And the quality of the food was really high. All their fried things were not soggy or oily but tasty and crisp. I think about $2.5 for each? The udon was so chewy and delicious, not over cooked. I think the base cost of a regular size is about $7-9 depending on what you get. You can add on items or get a large size for more. I had the regular size kitsune and added a poached egg and had one potato croquette it came out to about $14-15 ish. Now I don't know that I'd drive into Waikiki just for udon but if someone wanted it this is where I'd recommend over marukame or tsuru ton tan for just good quality no frills udon. There's a filtered water station so no need to buy the bottled water! read more

Udon in Waikiki without the line (at least for now lol)! I don't normally go out of my way for udon, but it had been a while and Udon Yama just recently opened in the Stix food hall so a friend and I figured now would be a good time to go while it is mostly out of people's radar. It was very similar to Marugame - same concept and flavors and very simple yet comforting. The beef was tender and juicy, but a tiny bit on the fatty side for my taste. The hand-pulled noodles were pretty springy and a good texture. The soup was delicious (flavorful and not overly salty) and pulled everything in the bowl together. The A/C in the food hall was nice since it was a warm day to eat hot food and there is a small station where you can get ice water and other sauces and toppings for your tempura and food. I don't know what it is about this place but once you try their udon you are hooked and will dream about when you get home. I think the secret is the broth, rich in flavor and just delicious. Another favorite is their pork katsu curry rice. The pork is perfectly cooked and pairs well with the delicious fragrant curry. They also have an assortment of tempura which is a must to try. Food was good, the #2 sweet broth smacks! The #10 curry was a little thick but the flavor was great. The tempura shrimp,ish room and eggplant all could was a little over cooked for my liking but the croquette was on point. The only other complaint on service is that the pork katsu takes about 10 minutes to make, rather than wait and give us both our food together they gave me mine and it just sat at the table the entire time. (Took 30 seconds to make). They should have just served us both at the same time especially given that my was almost instant. One week tried both places back to back to compare and sorry but this place is by far better then marugame. Marugame has a little more selection but taste wise omg this place is so much better. Another udon place in Waikiki located inside the new Stix Asia food hall. The whole setup, from the menu to the ambiance, it extremely similar to Marugame Udon. Only thing that is different is that the long line out the door is missing ;) Ordering process is almost the same as Marugame Udon, except you pick your tempura first THEN order the udon. To me this seems a little less efficient since the cashier needs to wait for the udon to be prepared even after checking out but I guess there's not really a line so it doesn't matter much. I'm not a tempura fan so I just ordered a cold Ontama Udon as a light lunch. Noodle texture was nice and chewy, and the broth was flavorful without being too heavy. Partner got a niku udon and said it tasted exactly like Maru game Udon. The only thing I was a bit disappointed by is that somehow the onsen eggs were overcooked but only in the yoke. The egg white was a nice silky/custard texture but for some reason the yokes were all cooked completely solid instead of being slightly runny. Mmm Udon Yama! Located in the Stix Asia food hall in Waikiki, this restaurant is comparable to Murakami Udon if you don't want to wait in line for Murakami.
