Came here because we wanted udon and there was no way we were going to wait for Marugame Udon when we have a location at home (we're from SF). This place is just as good without the wait! We grab whatever tempura that they had out and order the udon at the register. The udon came out so quick! Utensil station had the tempura sauce and water is self-serve. Seating is free for all but we didn't have a problem finding seats because it wasn't that busy. I thought the squid tempura was a decent size but disappointed that the tempura wasn't crunchy. I would skip it next time. The nikutama was filling and tasted just as good! Good portion of meat and noodles, noodles were super bouncy and fresh. I can't comment on the egg because I didn't eat it. Overall a good find, and definitely comparable to Marugame. Come here instead, no wait and affordable prices!
I was the first person to arrive when they opened at 11 am. Having never been, the options for grabbing individual ala carte add ons was interesting start. Next time I would pass on the fried items because the udon was extremely filling. The AC it strong, so I got the hot option. The bench seating is a bit hard, there are no comfy cushions, but lots of seating throughout. I chose the Nikutama because it was the best seller. It was a little sweet but I liked it!
Went once and came back again! I like that Udon Yama is not super busy, they are fast, and there are nice people work there. Some of the tempura isn't super fresh and crunchy, but the udon noodle soup makes up for it. How it works here is that you get in line, grab a tray, select the tempura you want and other small bites, decide on the udon or curry dish you want, pay, and then go find a place to sit. Once done with dining, you can set your tray in a specific area, and they will take it from there. There's free water next to that drop off area. I like their chili flakes. I get a container, pour a mountain of chili flakes, and drop in some broth and make it a poor man's chili paste. So good. Utensils are provided by the seating area. Definitely recommend if you're in the Stix Asia food hall area if you're craving some udon! I need to come back to try their curry and lemon udon bowl. Thanks, Udon Yama for being my first udon experience in Waikiki!
Still my favorite udon place ever. I always get the same thing. Large, cold kitsune udon w boiled/ tempura egg. The kids always get koroke and zucchini tempura. I'm always so excited for summers in Oahu, I think a lot of why is for this udon dish lol.
Came when they opened. Everything was cold, it sucked! So bummed Udon was good Probably won't be back
Located at the Waikiki Shopping Plaza food hall Udon Yama is good for a quick bite. There's a small buffet portion where you help yourself and pay by the item. Then when you get to the cashier you place your udon or curry order, order your drinks and pay for the items you helped yourself to. The sweet chicken that was in the self serve line was very tasty. Our curry was ready quickly and you seat yourself at any available table. There is a water station for self serve water and when you're done a place to drop off your dishes. There's no table service for anything and the place is kinda small. It's definitely a place where you eat and go, not somewhere to leisurely take your time. Prices are Waikiki prices so a little higher than average. Curry was good.
The food is very authentic and flavorful. It's like actually being in Japan as we go there often. The service was terrific with Tadashi at the helm. I love the ambiance and the ability to take what you need for takeout containers, bag and other things you wish to add to your food prior to take out. The place is super clean and cared for. What a great lunch we had and locals get a 5% discount which is great.
I'm a local guy, that never comes to Waikiki, but I gotta say udon Yama is a good dine and dash. The line was out the door, and pretty casual.. Service was fast, pick your add-ons as well as pick your meal. Tonight, I had the beef udon which was flavorful and delicious and reasonably priced. Service was friendly, and courteous. Super disappointing. Fell for the reviews saying this was a better alternative to marugame and was such a lie. More expensive for way lesser quality food. Lukewarm temp and smaller portions.
I came at 7:30pm on a Tuesday and there was plenty of seating. The service is extremely fast and the workers are nice. The restaurant is well decorated and very spacious. I got the cold nikutama and it was good, but not my favorite cold udon (that goes to yume in boston). The broth was lukewarm and lacked a little bit of flavor to me. The noodles themselves were cooked well and the meat was yummy --umami and slightly sweet. I wish the broth had a little more depth, but for the convenience I would come again.
Great late night spot. Food is so fast and tasty. Just go down the line and grab ur food. Plenty of space to sit. Got the beef udon combo and it was a good amount of food for 9.95!
This is my regular udon spot. I love the Nikutama and the Lemon bowls. I've tried the hot and cold broth of Nikutama and both are so satisfying. The Lemon bowl that only comes in cold is especially refreshing on a hot day in Waikiki. The broth is addicting and it's perfectly seasoned so that it's not too sour but it has just the right amount of acidity to make the simple bowl stand out. Their noodles have a consistent texture every time which I can rely on and appreciate. I've tried many of their tempuras and my favorites are the egg, zucchini, and seafood pancake. On top of that, the restaurant is such an easy and casual stop for lunch or dinner as they're right in front of the entrance of Stix, they have plenty of tables, and the self service bars for the tempura, utensils, and sauce are awesome.
Considering how long they've been around and how Hawaii is always so hot/warm, it's amazing to me how Marugame Udon still manages to attract a crowd. On multiple occasions, the line practically stretched around the corner! So, it's no wonder that, as we walked through the Stix Asia food hall, Udon Yama and its relatively modest line caught our eye. The same type of set-up and menu, yet in a much cooler space, with less than half the wait and plenty of available seating? How could we not give this place a shot? While the obvious similarities they share with Marugame Udon gave us hope, it should be said that even if they didn't, Udon Yama legitimately looked pretty appealing on its own. As we made our way down the line past the trays of tempura and side dishes, not only did everything look pretty good, but they felt a bit more varied as well. What's more, the range of entrees offered so many enticing options. While we were obviously here to try their udon (which they had almost a half dozen varieties of, served both hot or cold), I have to admit I felt more than a little tempted by their Katsu Curry Rice and Beef Bowl. -- (#1) NIKUTAMA UDON with Sweet Beef, Onion, and Hot Spring Egg (Hot)...$14.95 This was great! I loved the broth, which had a nice beefy flavor with a bit of sweetness to it, the noodles were well cooked with a nice bite, and there was fairly generous amount of beef in the bowl. Delicious! -- ZUCCHINI TEMPURA...$2.50 Hardly amazing, but not too shabby either. This legitimately might have been the longest zucchini tempura I've seen, but what I liked most was that it wasn't at all overcooked or mushy. -- SHRIMP TEMPURA...$2.50 Pretty straightforward, but still terrific! Since it's their most popular tempura, the workers were constantly refilling the tray, so these were especially hot and crispy. As for the shrimp itself, it was really plump and meaty. -- SWEET POTATO TEMPURA...$3 Of all of the vegetable tempura items we had, this was easily my favorite! The potato was soft, with a sort of creaminess to it, but still had some bite to it. -- CHICKEN TEMPURA WITH SWEET SAUCE...$4.50 Even though it's called Chicken Tempura, this felt a little closer to Karaage. Either way, this was pretty solid. The batter wasn't quite as crispy as I would've liked, but the chicken itself was really juicy and it tasted far better than the one I've had in the past at Marugame Udon. -- (#4) BEEF UDON with Sweet Beef and Onion in Kake Broth (Hot)...$10.75 Pretty similar to the Nikutama, though not entirely alike. Besides the obvious absence of the egg, the other thing we noticed was that this broth didn't taste quite as sweet. A little more plain in that sense, but still pretty good! -- MUSHROOM TEMPURA...$2.50 This just wasn't very good, though, to be fair, I don't think mushroom tempura ever really works since they're like sponges. So, as much as I appreciated how big this was, it felt a little soggy and oily. -- MIXED VEGETABLE TEMPURA...$3.50 Kind of similar to Yachae Twigim (Korean shredded veggie tempura), but not quite as good. That's not to say that this tasted bad, though; it's just that this one had a bit more batter, so it was harder for the veggies to stand out. -- SOFT BOILED EGG TEMPURA...$2.50 I only had a bite of this one, but what I had was pretty decent. I don't usually go for egg tempura because of how the batter doesn't usually stick to the egg, but I liked how the yolk on this one was so gooey. While what we had at Udon Yama wasn't as good as what I had when I first visited Marugame years ago, the same could be said for the trips I've made to the latter's locations in the Bay Area. Plus, when you factor in the shorter wait times, not having to wait outside, how much more seating there is here, and, most importantly, the fact that the food here isn't dramatically far off, I'd probably opt to come back here just to save on time and for the convenience...and to try their Katsu Curry Bowl!
It was about 1:30pm and I was in need of something quick and fast... as you all all know there is a quick noodle place on Kuhio Ave. the Marugame Udon... that place gets "wicked" long lines and so busy. If your in the mood for the same but not such a long line... then try this place... it's got almost the same variety. Broth essentially is the same and recalling to mind that most of the soup offerings can be cold or hot. The best part was the ambience. It was after the noon hour and it was NOT! Repeat not.crowded- not crazy packed. - No lines!! And just like Marugame- it had the clean up After yourself system!! Oh I'll be back!! For sure!! read more
Reminds me exactly of Marugame udon when it comes to layout and food. I've only been to Marugame in the mainland, and it was only okay. The udon I ordered (#2) was SO good, better than mainland Marugame's. The noodles were chewy, broth was flavorful. 1 star off because the tempura was cold, stale, and had too much batter - just like the mainland Marugame. Definitely hit the spot for late night bites in Waikiki. Service was nice! I asked for extra green onions and they also hooked me up with some tempura flakes. I'd definitely recommend the #2, just skip out on the tempura! read more

Delicious Udon! Noodles are amazing! Al dente and homemade (you can tell by the variations in noodle size/cut)! I tried the Ontama, Beef, Nikutama, and Kake udon. My favorite was the Nikutama though I feel like this broth was the saltiest one we ordered. Very flavorful! I don't usually like beef in my noodle-soups, I usually find it bland and dry. However, this beef very tasty and flavorful (not dry at all- but quite fatty). Goguma was good. They have dipping sauces by the silverware, but I preferred pairing it with my broth. Their ordering system is very efficient. You grab a tray and walk by the assorted fried foods. At the end you place your order at the cash register. They make your noodle bowl on the spot and then you seat yourself. Overall, I would return to Udon Yama and highly recommend! read more

Udon know how much I love udon! ;) Come check out Udon Yama inside the STIX Asia Food Hall or Waikīkī Food Court. It's right across Ross Dress for Less Store. There's other food selection to choose from but today, let's highlight Udon Yama. You get to choose from a variety of tempura options. I grabbed mushrooms, jalapenos and shrimp tempura to go with my Kitsune Udon. The tempura's were seasoned well, light on batter and cooked to crisp perfection! I chose Kitsune Udon for its simple yet flavorful broth. The udon were cooked al dente. It's soft, firm and chewy! The staffs. were friendly. They informed us that the utensils, napkins, condiments, and water are all self service. And only if, and only if, that you have a leftover, they have containers and plastic bags for you to take and pack your food. I highly doubt it though ;) It's so yummm you might find yourself getting a second meal. I recommend parking in the Ross parking garage. You can purchase something at Ross and get your ticket validated for 2 hours free! It's $3 for every 30 minutes after. Thank you for reading my review. Have a great Wednesday! read more
Great udon, broth, and tempura options. Noodles are bouncy and chewy without being too thick, broth was flavorful yet light, and the tempura was crispy without being too oily. Great prices, friendly service, lots of seating, and zero line. read more

We stopped by this restaurant after browsing through several in the basement of this building. I'm an udon lover and noticed their offering. I picked a tray, selected a shrimp skewer at $3.50 (a bit over priced I thought, a sweet potato deep fried, then order udon with beef. The beef was stringy and fatty, not the best. The shrimp was cold, but the udon was very good. Udon Marukame was better and fresher, but this was good. If I go again I'll skip the side products and just get the Udon kake (plain) or maybe try the hot. The service people were nice, the restaurant clean, though our bench seat was missing its cushion. read more
This is a great recommendation by our Uber driver. Easy to pass up the entrance for this place; but it's located in an underground (Asia) food hall. Lots of choices; but this one specifically caught our eye. We ordered the number 7 that comes with beef. Omg that broth is killa! So warm and tasty; I finished drinking the bowl. I didn't want to waste an ounce of this udon. You put your own sauces and seasoning on top. Little chili flakes and some soy sauce ; ohh yeah bring it on. This brought me back to our vacation in Japan. There's a regular and a large size to choose from. We chose regular and it was the perfect amount. The beef is tender. Kind of like cafeteria style; get in line and pick whatever you want. The prices are reasonable; for two people I think it costed $22-$23. read more

Been going to Udon Yama for a couple of years now and Udon, curry and tempura are so delicious! They are in the Waikiki Stix food mall and no long lines to wait in like Marugame. I highly recommend this place, clean, nice staff and great food! read more

They really reminded me of Marugame Udon! My mom doesn't eat raw fish, so we were looking for a restaurant nearby that she could eat. We decided to stumbled upon Udon Yama and she decided to give it a try. The meal voucher that the airline gave us had to be manually entered into the POS machine, so the cashier was initially confused on how to do that. The cashier consulted with his other team members and they were able to figure it out, so I'm grateful for their persistence. My mom ordered the Nikutama Udon, which includes beef, onions, and an egg. She enjoyed it, I tasted some of it and it tasted like good udon to me. read more
Ive gone here a couple times now. A couple months ago, it was always fairly empty in the restaurant with only one or two tables filled. Recently i feel like people are catching on and im seeing the restaurant more packed. Not sure if its just when i go theres more people or if Udon Yama is finally getting noticed. Its one of my favorite spots for a quick meal in waikiki. Something about udon in general is just comfort food for me but they do offer some flavors here that are amazing like the cold lemon flavored udon. read more

I loved it. We went for late night eats as we walking around Waikiki. It's located in the Stix Asian Food hall which is on the lower level. With so many choices for Asian food, we decided on this place. You can take to go or order at the counter grab a table and eat there. Food was decently priced, served hot and they have a bunch of tempura that's just grabbing go. For the udon, the broth was super tasty and udon noodles cooked perfectly. Highly recommend Udon Yama! If you need to satisfy your udon craving, this is definitely the place. The restaurant is clean and had plenty of seating. You're not rushing to eat like at Marukame. They had a vast selection of tempuras and udon options. The noodles were so bouncy and cooked perfectly! Ever since I ate here, I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. This place is located in Stix Asia and it's a great alternative if you don't want to wait in the long line at Marugame! We got the nikutama and curry udon and both were delicious! Honestly probably just as good as Marugame. They don't have as much variety of tempura and musubis but still a selection. I think we got the calamari and vegetable tempura which was good and made our meal more filling. I really like how fast and casual this spot is too! Definitely check it out if you want a quick, filling and cheap meal in Waikiki! read more
Located inside of Stix, they have their own parking lot, but it's a shared lot so you'll be lucky if you find parking. I usually like parking at Ross across the street and purchase something for my dogs to get validated parking. The service was quick. You pick up a tray, select which tempura and onigiri you want (if you want any), then order at the register. They make your noodles right then and there. I LOOOOOVE udon and after trying this place at a previous Yelp Event, I was hooked. I took my boyfriend here for our date night and it almost felt like we were back in Japan. I got the hot nikutama udon with squid and fishcake tempura. The noodles were soft and chewy, The broth was perfect- sweet yet savory. The niku (beef meat) and the ontama (onsen egg) was perfectly cooked. I asked for extra green onion too. The whole meal just hit the spot. If you're looking for authentic udon that transports you back to good old Japan, I recommend checking this place out! This place is much worse than Marugame right around the corner, portions are very small given the price point. There are far better choices around, even in the same food court it is in. No wonder there is no line in this joint. read more

Solid choice and a good alternative to Marugame Udon if you don't feel like waiting. Downstairs in the food court. Water is complimentary and you get your own condiments so no need to tip, but I still did. Their soy sauce is a bit different, but in a good way. Made in the Kyokane Brewery, it's salty but tasty. I also got a couple of tempuras, the soft boiled tempura egg is definitely worth trying and something I've never had. Only $2.50. read more

Now that Marukame udon went back to being not so salty with their broth, this place is still going to compete with eat other for the spot on my favorite udon place in Hawaii list lol. It wasn't crowded during early lunch, which was good. We had Kake udon with shrimp tempura and Ontama udon. The eggs here are delicious and the broth is so different from Marukame Udon so you can swap between places if you want lol. It got pricier than Marukame Udon so that's why people still go to Marukame :( They have curries now, which is cool. They still have coupons in the coupon book for this place so don't forget lol. read more

After a long day of driving and adventures, we decided to end the night with dinner in Waikiki. I haven't gone to the STIX since it opened up and wanted to check out the multitude of restaurants. My friends and I wanted something light-ish and cheapish and found this udon place right in front with a similar concept as Marugame (so many of them now!). It's located in front of the entrance coming from Kalakaua Ave on the bottom floor inside of STIX in the Waikiki Shopping Plaza in Waikiki. The parking for this plaza is paid, and I'm not sure if you can get validation. My friends and I parked elsewhere where we could get validation as we would be shopping in that plaza/center. I got their Bu udon noodles with a ton of tempura flakes and green onions on top. I added a croquette and squid tempura on the side. The taste was delicious! But I felt that it didn't have unique touch that differentiated it from other similar udon cafeteria-styles restaurants. The tempura and croquette were also good but didn't amaze me. My boyfriend got their Nikutama that came with a poached egg and sweet beef. I stole some of his beef to compliment my udon hehe. There was one dish that really stood out for this place, and it was the Lemon udon. The picture had a TON of lemons on top which was quite interesting. I wasn't too adventurous to try it out that night LOL. Overall, a good place to have a quick meal. I felt that the prices, besides the normal Bu and Kake, were quite of high. But was still much cheaper than the other restaurants within STIX. read more
A great spot to check out with good pricing and portions! My family decided to try this spot out for dinner. We had a large party of 8 with 2 toddlers and a child. It's self seating after you order from the counter. Similar concept to Marugame udon without the line down the block. Service is friendly and patient. I got the lemon udon regular size and a tempura egg. My udon noodles were a really nice texture and the egg was nicely done. Prices were a lot more affordable than other restaurants I went to in the surrounding area. Overall, a tasty udon spot! read more
My mom and I came walking in Waikiki and stumbled upon Udon Yama in Stix Asia at around 3pm. Not many other shops were open, so it was pretty empty inside. We got the lemon udon and gyudon. Both hit the spot. I never thought about putting slices of lemon on my udon, but it was really refreshing. The sourness of the lemon paired perfectly with the saltiness of the broth. The gyudon was also really good. The beef was so soft and flavorful. read more

This place is in the Asian food court in Waikiki. As soon as you go down the escalator it to your left. They have a very friendly staff and they serve traditional Japanese udon (my fav). I thought I was back in Japan. So yummy! Oishi kata! read more
I wasn't wowed by the food here. We ordered two large nikutama, and some tempura sides. The udon noodles themselves were ok, as was the meat, but the broth was way too sweet for me and the egg was way undercooked. I immediately stirred the egg into the broth to try to cook it more, but as the broth was also only warm, it just ended up with large gloopy barely cooked egg white throughout. The tempura suffered from a similar problem, as my zucchini (beautiful and a large piece) was cold - not just like cooled down from having sat too long, the inside was still fridge-temp-cold. It's kind of serve yourself so not much to say on service. Given udon is really the whole menu and I didn't think much of it, I think my future trips to this strip of restaurants will involved dining at a different one. read more
Very similar restaurant to Marugame. Self service - Grab a tray, take whatever separately-priced tempura or sides you want, order an udon at the register at the end of the line. Get your own water, utensils, sauce, and bus dishes yourself at end, no waiters. But the difference is in the food, this is no Marugame Udon. 3 stars for the food itself, -1 star for the piece of ceramic that was found in the curry soup. Hoping it was a chipped piece of a bowl and not something dirtier. The tempura all down the line can be skipped. We tried tempura chicken thigh, egg, zuchinni, and shrimp. All tasted like they had been made a while ago and just sat under the heat lamp. Not hot at all and not fresh. The curry soup was also not hot and didn't seem fresh and the noodles were average. Curry rice was good and worth getting - the katsu was freshly fried and there was a 7-min wait for it but worth it compared to the other items. read more

Affordable, solid udon without the wait at marugame. Pretty solid place if you just want some good ole nikutama udon with various tempura options. There was barely a wait when I came. Marugame is not worth the long wait. Service was quick, food was solid. Style is similar to marugame udon where you just pick your noodle and size and then pick out your side tempura dishes. Bus your own table and get your own waters and utensils. Nice, easy quick meal. read more
This was one of our first meals in Oahu. We did not want to wait in the Marugame line so we decided to try this one. Location/parking: There are multiple entrances to this food hall. As far as I can tell parking in Waikiki is not fun. We were able to walk here from our hotel. Service/Ordering: definitely not as efficient as Marugame. There was one person serving all 6 of us and handling the register. Food: The Nikutama was OK. Nothing remarkable. The broth is a bit on the sweeter side. The portions were small for the price. The curry nikutama offered a bit more flavor with the curry broth. Overall, if you're short on time and don't want to stand in the line for Marugame and there's no other udon place open, eat here. read more

Udon Yama is a great alternative to the other udon place if you dont want to wait in a super long line. Price is super reasonable. I got the curry udon. So good, the broth was thick. The udon was fresh and chewy. But the fried tempura selections was a little underwhelming maybe because we came on a Wednesday at 5:30? It was slow in there. My udon bowl was 10/10. My shrimp tempura was so small but I can't complain, I got it for free. Hawaii residents get a free shrimp. You have to mention then they will give you one. read more

This place was like marugame but online and slightly smaller portions. I may come here instead of waiting in line. The udon tastes the same but less broth maybe the same amount of noodles I couldn't tell. See my photos the tempura I got was cold. This place is in the Asian stix. read more
