Loved the vibes and concept, but execution missed the mark. UES has a fully functional ice cream shop in the front, as well as a speakeasy bar at the back, featuring UES/NYC themed drinks. You can make reservations online or walk in, and they'll ask you to find the button to open the secret door. You can also order ice cream inside the bar. Inside the bar, I loved the intimate vibes with fun paintings, pop of pink/gold, mirrors, and trinkets at the bar. Music only got loud after 9pm and there is a good variety of table sizes to accomodate different party sizes. The Tea At The Carlyle featured gin, rose hip aperol, lemon, and a mix of blackberry jam, chocolate/matcha tea. The lemon and mild blackberry flavors came through but otherwise tasted like a more diluted lemon drop. While it was cutely served in a teacup, it was also brown with chunks so not as appetizing as one would hope. I wonder if clarifying it would be helpful. A Carnegie Steel also had citrus-y flavors with a prominent ginger flavor. Didn't quite understand the lid vs straw vs cookie on top situation but it was a decent drink for sure! For ice cream, the descriptions are outside of the bar. The Dirty Chocolate just tasted like regular chocolate. The spumoni had a good mix of raspberry, nutty, and chocolate flavors. Texture of ice cream was smooth but still icy, not creamy. It honestly didn't feel much different from store-bought generic ice cream. I did like the fun colorful decor in the front with ice cream related graphics, pins, and cards. Staff were polite. Drinks came quick but a little pricey for the end-product/taste. UES UES is an Ice Cream Stand in front of a hidden Speakeasy. I haven't been for a scoop of ice cream in a while but recently was invited to a girls night out for my friends daughters 21 birthday. It was a family and friend affair so I didn't get a to take a lot of photos. When my daughter is there she frowns on it at certain celebrations. A few things about going for a special occasion are as follows: 1. Make a reservation 2. Don't be late 3. Read the Yelp reviews and look at the photos 4. Be mindful of the dress code 5. Check out the current pdf menu that I posted or download a copy like I did. 6. Check out the prices! I saw the poor reviews and I can only say our celebration went off as planned. We had a table that was perfect for our party of eight ladies. We could all see each other to chat and enjoy the atmosphere and our drinks. If you don't want alcohol you can order ice cream. I was really there to celebrate the young ladies 21 birthday since I've known her from birth and also her mother since she was a teenager! I was an inexpensive party member while my daughter had a fancy drink and a shot. Everyone was having a shot after their drink to celebrate, the birthday girl had two! By far, UES. is one of my least favorite cocktail bars in the city. It's a gimmick-heavy spot with plenty of potential but a failure. The concept is a speakeasy hidden behind an unimpressive ice cream shop. On arrival, we were greeted by an employee glued to their phone who was completely disengaged. The ice cream counter looked unappealing, the display sloppy, and the space itself felt dirty. When we mentioned our reservation, the attendant told us to find the hidden switch to open the door, then pointed us in the wrong direction which left us fumbling awkwardly. Inside the bar was uncomfortably hot, awkwardly arranged with tiny tables, and lacked a true atmosphere. The menu was overwhelming in size, yet none of the drinks seemed particularly enticing. After finally being given water, we struck up a conversation with a nearby couple, who warned us that both the cocktails and the ice cream were terrible. My friend and I came here a few weeks ago to grab a drink and catchup. She lives in the neighborhood and has been wanting to check this out. I love a good speakeasy and this one has a great storefront. It's actually an ice cream shop in front, with real ice cream and nondairy options. The experience of figuring out how to get into the speakeasy was pretty good. I won't describe it here and spoil it for anyone who wants to try it out. Once you enter the speakeasy, the vibe completely changes from bright friendly ice cream shop, to dark and sophisticated cocktail bar. The art scattered along the walls and the ceiling is really cool and unique. The bar itself is beautiful as well. there's several large booths for large groups and also tables for two if you're on a date or with a friend like we were to catch up over a drink. Now here is where I have some feedback for this place to take it from good to great. Please simplify your mobile menu. I like the idea of the themed drinks and the story behind each one, but it's really hard to navigate on your phone. The idea is cute but for each drink you have a title, then a paragraph telling the story about the drink, then a second detailed description of the drink itself. For every drink I had to read two paragraphs just to find out it's another tequila drink and I don't like tequila. We asked our server for a drink recommendation that was similar to a vodka martini and what he suggested was something fruity and sweet (not at all what we were in the mood for). Maybe if the menu were printed or organized by spirit, it would be easier to navigate. But we both got frustrated and just ordered dirty martinis because we tired of scrolling. Also please tell whoever's phone is connected to the speaker to put their playlist on shuffle. When we arrived, we walked into some Mariah Carey, which was great. But then there were four more Mariah Carey songs, and then we realized that We Belong Together was playing again. It sounded like someone noticed and switched to Justin Timberlake and then the same thing happened again and we heard Rock Your Body twice within 30 minutes. With these minor tweaks I think this place could be amazing! UES. was a letdown. Although I love the concept of a speakeasy hidden behind a legitimate ice cream shop, I feel as though this is a tourist trap, and yet, was pretty quiet for a Friday night. You begin by having to solve the "riddle" of where to find a light switch in an obvious location, which is supposed to be the "abracadabra" that triggers the door to the speakeasy to open, but in reality we just stood there awkwardly as we waited for a disgruntled staff member to open the door from the inside. I will say, the interior is well-designed and fun. The tables are small and incredibly close together, which makes it awkward. The menu is on a QR code, and is on a PDF close to 30 pages long, with lengthy (yet somehow still unhelpful) descriptions of each drink, which all have long names that the servers have trouble hearing. A simple description of the notes/flavors of each drink on a 3 pager (max) would suffice, but no. They also serve ice cream in easily 50 different combos (1-3 scoops, vaguely described, overpriced ice cream sundaes) among other things. Their menu could use some paring down, as I'm sure it's a nightmare for the two people working to be bartenders, serve up ice cream, and servers all at once. On that note, service could have been better. It wasn't friendly, to say the least. Lastly--they make it SO clear on their website that the dress code is strict and upscale (no sneakers?!), meaning that my party, who had only packed walkable shoes (no heels) were stressing all day wondering if there was a chance we were going to get turned away from an ICE CREAM SHOP (speakeasy, but you get my drift). Only to arrive and the dress code was very much not enforced, which was good for us, but... ?!?!? I did enjoy my cocktail (although I'm no connoisseur and my tastes are juvenile, as evident by the literal $25 unicorn ice cream I spent my hard earned money on) as well as the ice cream itself. The drinks here are always fantastic, it's the reason you would hope to be drawn to an ice cream speakeasy, right? Cocktails themed around a lot of city staples including businesses and people who have made New York great. I would say about 1/3 of the drinks include a pairing of ice cream or sorbet from the front of house parlor, but you can get those flavors or other local desserts a la carte. The menu features "light bites" and they really do mean light, snacks not food BUUUUT- you can bring food from local places in, so if you need more than tots a jumbo soft pretzel (which is actually quite good) I recommend calling in a To-Go order for a pizza or some loaded Mac and cheese then picking it up on your way to UES. I have come many times when a friend visits NY and they want something unique, but I may have to pick my nights a little more carefully- Cinema Sundays are always understaffed, which makes no sense because they are a popular night! This review is regarding the super top secret bar behind the door of ice cream pints. I had an enjoyable experience here. I didn't make a reservation, but luckily when I showed up around 12:45am, they were able to let us in. It's fun you have to find the switch to open the door. Then you get brought behind the door and the bar is very cool. The space is small, but I thought it had a nice ambiance. All the staff I came into contact with were awesome! They were so fun and nice. There are so many options if was almost overwhelming. My boyfriend and I got the "I Left My Heart in Yorkville". It came in a really cute heart shaped glass and had delicious ice cream on top. Although it looked complex it was pretty simple and tasted good. Definitely overpriced but all part of the experience! Solid neighborhood speakeasy bar that most may already know about. It's not hard to enter the bar if you can find the switch and possibly order the right flavor of ice cream. Yes, the drinks are still expensive and the menu is limited like many classy bars around the city, but the bartender works hard at making your drinks taste right. The inside decor is also unique. Take a look at the photos, you'll see paintings of rappers and a mix of classic Victorian styled art with modern day replicas of celebrities. I ordered the "Alice..." Finally got to check out the speakeasy part of UES. I have been to the ice-cream shop upstairs many times and have always enjoyed their delicious ice cream when I have had it. In order to get into the speakeasy you have to find the switch that opens the door. This speak easy is an experience so they try and make it one. The door is filled with all ice cream tubs. When you walk in you are first greeted by a coat check. I suggest you do it as there is not much room in the booths/ bar seating area to put it. When you walk into this place too you are asked to take off your winter hats. I had a reservation for 4 people so we were given a choice of where to sit between two booths. We took the one towards the front as it seemed to be more room. The first choice we were told looked like a 4 seater but it was sectioned in half by a curtain. A bit odd. Anyways, our booth the seating is uncomfortable and really not much space. You need to sit up straight as that is what this booth feels like it makes you do. Our waiter and waitress as we had two people helping us were not great. They were nice but when we wanted to order a drink they were no where to be found. So we endedup not getting one as we were leaving anyways. The atmosphere of this space is pretty cool and it was decorated for valentines day so they had a bunch of heart balloons and the Lettering in balloons on the wall saying Text Me. I thought this was cool. THe bar area is very appealing. If I ever come back to this place I would like to sit at the bar and see what that experience is like. I used one of the two bathrooms and found that there was a leak in the bigger bathroom. I told one of the employees and they were right on it. They closed that bathroom door so people would not use it. As for drinks and food. We did not get any food, just drinks. My friend and I first got the drink called the Barbizon 63. This is made with Primaterra Prosecco. Combier Rose Liqueur, sugar and strawberries. The strawberries were in a little heart shape which was super cute. We were confused by the fact that these drinks came in plastic squishy champagne flutes. Maybe they ran out of the nice glasses that we thought they may have come in. I had two of these. My friend then had the I left my heart in Yorkville. This drink came in a cute heart shaped cup. This was a gin based drink made with Purple empress gin, fresh blueberries, kewra essence: lemon poppy seed. Soco creamery Blueberry honey lavender ice cream was in a little cone on top of the drink. The guys had one of the bourbon drinks which had four roses bourbon, Bauchant napoleon orange cognac, lemon, agave and allspice. And then there was a banana-like drink but I can't remember the name of it. All in all, glad I got to experience this place with good friends but not sure about coming back here so quickly. Wow! I use to come here all the time. I have not been back since 2020. I cannot believe how the place has changed. First, we were seated in this tiny booth covered by a curtain (three women). Clearly that was not happening, so we pushed the curtain back and took up the two tables. We pointed out to the bartender there is no one in here! It was completely empty on a Saturday night at 7:00pm?? Very odd. The unique drinks and displays that were on the menu back in 2020 were no longer listed. We tried to be optimistic and asked the server for recommendations. That was like asking the wall! We decided on 2 specialty cocktails and one wine. We waited over 40 minutes for the drinks! The cocktails were terrible. I asked the server if he could light our table candles. By this time 3 men arrived and were escorted to a nice large booth (interesting!!!). We were never asked if we wanted another drink nor were our water glasses refilled. My daughter went up to the bar to ask for a beer and was met with "What's Up?" by the bartender. Why is she going to the bar to ask for a beer if we have a server? She quickly drank her beer (which was flat) and we asked for the check, that came within 30 seconds!! In 2019 I held a work fundraiser here. It was amazing and the talk of my donor base for years. It's sad that this speakeasy has deteriorated over the years. We went on a Friday night and there was a bit of a line, so we bar hopped after making a reservation for the last seating. It's a very cool concept - a bar behind an ice cream shop. But the place was a little smaller than I envisioned, and also there seemed to be more than enough seating despite the line outside. Drinks were fun and Instagrammable. I got the Girls Gossip on the East which had nice presentation, and tasted okay. I also had a sip of someone bourbon ice cream drink (I don't remember the name of it sadly) which was good. One thing to note is that they do have a dress code (cocktail attire). Our group didn't realize this at the time but management was kind enough to let us come in. I was overcharged (wouldn't have noticed except I was provided with an itemized receipt) and I would have let it go had the bartender not been so rude. I called the bar several days in a row, they never pick up the phone (try for yourself: 646) 559-5889). So I finally went back in person and was told "no one is here who can help". I ended up having to email ... after all of that, they refunded me exactly the overcharge, not even an extra $5 for the inconvenience. This is one of those times where I just don't get the Yelp consensus. 3 stars? This is easily one of the top 10 most unique experiences I've had in the city--and we came on Valentine's Day weekend, no less! First, no problems saying the secret password phrase to get in. The person at the counter played his part and asked us to find the secret switch in order to enter for our 4:15pm reservations. A couple of minutes after pressing said switch, we were inside. Second, the space is gorgeous. For V-Day in particular, it was decorated to the nines with floating heart-shaped balloons, yet that somehow didn't come off as cheesy. The music was just the right volume and just the right quality--classic oldies like Billy Joel and The Temptations, which everyone can sing along to. Third, the drinks were all creative, fun and IG-able. Guys, it's ice-cream cocktails. Do you know of another bar that made a 13-page menu out of ice-cream cocktails? I didn't think so. If you can grab the seasonal V-Day menu, try the decadent Mint to Be or Power of Love. From their regular menu, pretty much every drink is fun and original, but I'd go with the Girls Gossip on the East for theatricality (it's lit on fire), the Next Stop is Hunter College for chocolate lovers, and the Made in New York for Asian-flavored deliciousness. Yes, service got thin after 6pm, as the place became packed to the gills. Saw this place on Tiktok and was excited to try since I've never been to a speakeasy bar before. We were able to make a reservation super easy on Resy. The only downside is if you cancel 24 hours before your reservation then you'd get charged $25 per person in your party. The minimum per table that we had to spend was around $50 which was fine because each drink ended up being $17-$18. I ordered the "I Left My Heart in Yorkville". It comes in a cute heart shaped glass with a small ice-cream cone. Not going to lie, it was super strong even with me mixing in the ice-cream. I knew there were levels to the strength as listed in the menu but I could not finish the drink whatsoever. The ice-creams were super delicious though. We were able to order the ice-cream and they'd bring it from the front into the back for us. Bathroom was decorated throughout with ice cream decor which I loved. Super cute. I can see why this place has a 3/5 stars. People were right. When you enter, you are met with a man who isn't the most welcoming person. This wasn't a deterrent as I expected this from reading the other reviews. The entrance to the speakeasy was a door that was beautifully decorated with pints of ice cream. We came after dinner with a reservation for three, but there was still a mini wait for the table. Once seated, we had 2 cocktails each. The cocktails were very good and I personally loved having ice cream in mine. I would totally come back to have a cocktail. Although the ambiance was nice and the drinks were great, they don't really allow you to enjoy your time here. We had just gotten our second drink when they were actively trying to kick us out. We were barely there for 60 minutes when they informed us that it was almost time to give up our table for the next party. My recommendation is if they must institute a time policy per party, they should be providing faster service. There is never an excuse to kick a party out when we had just gotten our second round of drinks. I could tell that they were pros at kicking people out because they offer to-go cups for unfinished cocktails. They do have little bites which are all foods we eat as children, including dino nuggets! We ordered the tater tots and pigs in a blanket. The tots could've been crunchier but the pigs in a blanket my husband said it was good. I am only deducting a star because theres one drink that they burn a tobacco leaf to incorporate the smoke into the drink and the whole place smells of tobacco. We came here as the speakeasy is in our neighborhood. The drinks are overpriced and the ice cream that comes with the drinks don't always work well with the flavors of the alcohol. You're definitely paying more for the experience than the actual taste. We didn't get to try the food here as we had gone after dinner. Not sure if that would have been better. The service also always felt a little rushed. It wasn't relaxing at all as you're cramped so close to the people next to you that there isn't even elbow space. I loved the Devil wheres nada because the drink packed some heat with the pepper. The ice cream here is no joke. Very creamy and delicious. Between the 6 of us we finished all of our cocktails and sweets. Love the concept here. Amazing service, strict dress code and unique cocktails. Yes, its a dark place so have night mode ready. We celebrated a friend's anniversary and the staff was great with the sparklers and remembering. Every one from the host, coat man, and servers were amazing. Very knowledgeable of the drinks and what fits your flavor profile. For parties above +6, you may have to book way in advance as they were at full capacity on a Saturday evening. The UES is a cute little speakeasy in the UES hidden behind an ice cream shop. You have to ring a buzzer and then you go through a door that is a wall of empty ice cream containers to go to the back. The bar itself is quite small with not too many options for seating so make sure to make a reservation if you don't want to stand or wait a while to get inside. The table we also had was quite small so all our items barely fit on it. We went for their 7th year anniversary and they passed out complimentary Prosecco and ice cream which was nice and the ice cream was pretty delicious (we tried the mint chocolate chip flavor as well as cookie dough). We grabbed pigs in a blanket and Dino nuggets to munch on which were pretty good and reminded me of my childhood but probably a little over priced considering they are easy foods to make. They have a variety of very interesting cocktails to choose from but we just got a glass of wine and a beer and called it a night. The music was great since they had a dj for the event. read more

Had a TERRIBLE experience. Don't go. Hateful customers and apathetic and insensitive staff. My group of friends came the other night to celebrate a birthday and we've been looking forward to coming for months. We had just sat down when the table next to us tried getting our attention and started shouting "free palestine" "fuck israel" and "fuck you, Jews" all because one of my friends was wearing a Star of David necklace. Waitstaff was walking around and didn't intervene or do anything to stop them from harassing us. We told the guy at the front and all he did was ask what table they were at, didn't offer any apology or anything. I don't know how people think it's okay to walk around and harass people for being visibly Jewish and blame us for what's happening on the other side of the world. The way this bar handled the situation was very disappointing. I will never be returning nor will I ever recommend this place to anyone since it attracts such garbage customers apparently. Shame on you guys. Go to 3rd Avenue Ale House. It's a way better experience. read more

Horrible service! Was in there 1 hour and 15 minutes, saw the waiter twice and had to call out to multiple times just to get water. We waited 25 minutes just to have our order taken, with no apology from the waiter with the tatted face. Way too expensive for such disgusting service. The man in the front had us wait for him to finish texting his friends before he even acknowledge we were there. The tatted waiter did spend a lot of time at one table, not sure if it was because he knew them or was flittering. It was absurd. The drinks I'd give a 5 outta 10. Would never go back read more

I like the way the drink menu ranks the strength and complexity of each drink. I love that many of the drinks include ice creams or sorbets. My drink was pretty strong, but it was rated a 9.5, so I can't say they didn't warn me! Unfortunately the service was not great because they were very understaffed. The servers were very apologetic, but it took a very long time for our food to come out. Coming here is a cool experience and the decorations are awesome. read more

Waiter accidentally made 2 of the same drink that my friend ordered so I just went for it. Made in New York I think was what it was called. Presentation was just sloppy. It was suppose to be black sesame but the drink was made with rum and so strong and was not enjoyable at all and the random sprinkles on top. Not worth $20 each. Make sure if come here to dress semi formal. Almost was turned down for my "athletic clothes". To enter you tell the worker at the ice cream shop that "you would like to volunteer at the storage room" Overall like the concept. Just the drinks was meh read more
