I went here for lunch with my wall street buddies and it wasn't that great. Ok so let me just tell you how it works so you don't sit there like an idiot like me or if you don't read that blurb on top of the menu explaining how to order. If you want the entrees or the sides listed on there, you go to this other room and they serve it to you, like a lunch line. But, if you're ordering a burger, then the waitress takes your order. We didn't know that so we sat there like dorks...soo uncool. The waitress came after 10 minutes to explain to us what to do. But, for those of us waiting to order burgers, it took 10 minutes to be served...not cool. The waitress was friendly though. So the burger I ordered was alright, kind of too big. Such a weird place. I come here only because it's close to my work and sometimes I just need a beer. The staff have been consistently rude, which bugs me - yeah, I'm not some middle-aged cigar-smoking Wall Street douchebag regular, but I'm polite and reasonably well-mannered and I just want a pint, so work with me on this. I've had bartenders look over, acknowledge me, and then turn back, take orders and serve several other regulars before even bothering to glance my way again. The table staff are nicer, but still not super-competent--they've screwed up my bill pretty much every time I've come here. Last time I was there, a bouncer yelled at me for putting my feet on the seat (I was sitting cross-legged in a booth) and told me that wasn't allowed. I half expected him to tell me to take my elbows off the table next. I mean, I get not wanting people to stomp all over your booth seating, but seriously, it's ginormous bar-height stuff, so for short people like me, there is literally nowhere for me to put my feet so I just have to dangle them in the air like a 5-year-old? Went here for dinner and drinks last night. We had nachos ($11), fish and chips ($16?), and wild mushroom ravioli in brown butter sauce ($14). Wines by the glass were $8. I had a Cotes du Rhone that wasn't bad. Everything was good but I think that the nachos were overpriced for what we got and I would have loved to have seen more "substance" to the nachos. (I'm from California where we really know how to make nachos!) I feel like the brunch service is going downhill. Service more than anything was the problem. We sat down and couldn't get a waitress to take our drink order to save our life. We didn't want to lose the table so we got up one at a time to get food. We were both halfway done with our first plate before she even took the drink order. They didn't arrive until after I was done with first plate. I leave for second plate of food leaving my silverware purposely off my plate so they wouldn't take it. They took it. The review is for their $20 sunday brunch. (The bar itself is pretty mediocre to me.) I came for their brunch a few months ago and returned this past sunday. Had a much better time because the weather was good and the outdoor seating area was open. This is a brunch spot you will want to go to if you like to eat raw oysters and clams. IMO, beats going to their annual oyster festival because 1) it's all you can eat for $20 and 2) their oyster festival is usually unbelievably crowded. The rest of the food is pretty decent, ranging from a corned beef carving area to an omelette station. I ended up at Ulysses after spending a day at Governors Island. I was super-hungry and ordered the fish and chips with a beer. It took more than 45 minutes to be served. One piece of fish was not cooked thoroughly. It was icy in the middle. GROSS! After I bit into that, I couldn't eat anything on my plate. I was sickened. This is a clear three star brunch. Why am I giving it two then you ask?.. It's because the only reason you should go here is because of the summer (stone street) brunch special, and yet they have the WORST COFFEE I'VE EVER TASTED. I'm not being difficult, it was not edible...or liquid. When I asked our server for a fresh cup, as if to suggest that perhaps this was some horrible fluke, we both exchanged glances for a few beats. Inaudible to those around us, she looked deep into my eyes as if to tell me "that's the best it gets". "Don't worry." I gazed back, "things will get better soon." I wanted to like this place. In fact I do plan to come back and enjoy the outdoor seating. My (bar) food was fine. It was the server who ruined it for me. Hopefully I won't see her again. First she started giving me a hard time when I sat down outside and realized I was alone. Then she realized I was eating so that was "ok". It wasn't crowded at 3 on a Saturday. After a long wait she came back to get my order. I seek out interesting beer so I inquired about the guest brews (as suggested on the menu).. She tried for a couple secs but didn't know any of them and just stated unapologetically that she was "kind of out of it today." Hmmpf. Ok so next question I had was - Can you tell me about the beer on the prominent Specials chalkboard outside? She didn't know what it was but she did know it was not on a special price. "Your best bet is to stick with the regular ones here on the menu. The Brooklyn is good." She brought my drink, ketchup and utensils. Another person brought my food. Over the course of 30 mins she never checked on me, just her texts while standing around out front. Worthless. I hated tipping but did anyhow. I went to Ulysses for lunch today with some co-workers. It was a beautiful day so we were excited to eat outside on the cobblestone street. We arrived towards the end of the lunch rush so we didn't have to wait for a table outside. After being seated we waited about 10 minutes before the waitress came and gave us our menus. When she came back she told us we had to go inside to get our food. It was similar to buffet style. She never came back with the waters we ordered, I had to flag down a bus boy to get us the water. She never brought us silverware or napkins...again I had to flag down a bus boy to bring us place settings. The food was decent but the service was AWFUL! read more

I was in the area the Saturday of the Kentucky Derby taking photographs with a Meetup group. We got an order of buffalo wings for the table which were really good...not too messy, just the right amount of heat. Some of the group shared the Ulysses Platter which came with oysters, clams, shrimp, and a lobster that they seemed to really enjoy. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich with fries; the fries were nice and crisp but a bit too salty and at first bite the sandwich lacked flavor but was good once I added a few shakes of salt and a splash of hot sauce. No complaints about the food but the service...when we first arrived, it took a while for someone to get us a table. Some of the tables were occupied but most of the people were focused on the race and weren't ordering anything beyond drinks if at all. Once seated, the waitress came over to take our order and when one person at the table said he wasn't ready and she should skip to the next person, the waitress disappeared to who knows where. Nobody came by to check on the table and we had to hunt down another waitress to find our waitress. Then there was a long wait for someone to take our food order and we were ready to eat the table by the time the food came. There was another long wait for the check. We split the bill amongst ourselves and provided plastic and cash with the intent of providing the tip separately. Instead of following these instructions, the waitress took the cash as her tip (her service certainly did not deserve a $25-30 tip) and put the entire bill on the cards. At that point, we were decided to cut our losses, made the corrections amongst ourselves and left. Great setting and food but I don't think I'll be returning. My friends and I met up here after work to catch up after the holiday weekend. This part of the Financial District is so pretty and has a historical vibe. We got there around 6pm on a Monday and you could basically hear the crickets chirping. Regardless, we ordered some dirty martinis and mixed drinks from the friendly bartenders. I am not sure if everyone was so friendly because we were one of few patrons, but I can't complain about the service. My friends ordered some food--mozzarella sticks, potato skins and there were no complaints and the portions were generous. A few 'gentlemen' sat down next to us a little later in the night and if this is any indication of the clientele, I will not be returning--downright unfriendly and pretentious. Who has time for that? The last time I was here was on a Thursday night and it was a typical NYC meet market, Balding fat guys hitting on just out of college girls. If that's what you are looking for this is your place. For me, I'm glad I'm married and I definitely appreciate my wife a lot more after hanging out here for a couple of hours. The bartenders were very good and even though the place was packed they we never had to chase after them for our next round. The beer is cold and its a good price, the food is OK. Its great for after work but its not worth the trip if your not in the area. I've had a better time at their other 2 bars Swift's and Puck Fair. read more

If you like to drink outdoors and don't enjoy inhaling the exhaust of every cab, car and bus, then this is a great place. Drinks are moderately priced and food is pretty standard. The public picnic benches make for a more comfortable group setting and easy conversation. The service is a bit spotty but not horrendous. Don't let the influx of Wall St yuppies scare you away. I'd never been to a bar in the Financial District before Ulysses. A guy friend who lives/works down there recommended it to me after I asked him for a place to celebrate a job offer at happy hour. That friend also neglected to mention that this is a meat market on Thursdays. I was accosted within 10 minutes of being there alone. Wasn't all bad, who says no to free beer? At any rate, this place has quickly becomes a favorite with my friends. The food is solid, and a bit more expensive than I think it should be, but it's still good. The waitresses are all really nice, and do a great job of keeping their cool when things get a bit crazy. The bartenders are phenomenal - I made friends with Martin, who hooked it up with some amazing scotch that wasn't on the menu. Also worth noting: they sell bottles of Veuve Clicquot for $75. This may be the best news I've heard since...well, in quite some time. Apparently I lead a sad life that revolves around alcohol. It's my absolute favorite champagne, and $75 is nothing (normally retails for around $45-50), especially when you consider that getting the same bottle at a club will run you around $300. The outdoor seating on Stone Street is great during the summer, but it can get super crowded. Great way to kill a Thursday/Friday night! read more

Ulysses Folk House is the result of the unlikely pairing of two influences - Irish & Greek. So yes, on the menu you'll find a corned beef sandwich and a Gyro living happily together. This was my second time at Ulysses Folk House. Both times were business lunches during the day. While my burger on this visit wasn't cooked to my liking, overall their food is good and I enjoy this place very much. Their burgers are fresh, come with fries and are fully dressed with lettuce, tomato, onion and a pickle on the side. A great deal for about $10.00 (with mushrooms and Swiss cheese) My group shared calamari that were way too salty but would have been good if that were dialed back. We also shared nachos which arrived on the verge of being cold. Our server did offer to replace them but everyone in our party agrees that it's never a good idea to send anything back. (Yes, I believe those books written by former servers.) Some in our party got Gryos and they reported they were delicious. They certainly looked and smelled that way. I'd say my only issue with Ulysses is how loud it is. I guess that can't be helped when the decor is largely wood and it's busy as it usually is. Next time here I'll stray away from the safety of a burger. One of the best things about Ulysses is that it's unpretentious and the servers are super-friendly. read more

I used to frequent this place so many times in the past, that Ulysses almost became my middle name. I don't go as frequently now but considering I work in the area, a review is necessary. First off, Stone Street in general is extremely quaint and feels like old Europe. The row of restaurants is diverse but overall, mostly pub food--not that it's a bad thing. Anyway, in the past, Ulysses was the go to place---the after work crowd, the music and more than decent good eats always resulted in a good time. I've gone a few times last year and my friends and I agree that it might be past its hey day. The music changed a lot and maybe even the crowd somewhat. It is always packed during the summertime--annoyingly so at times. They'll have annual fests such as Oyster Fest and St. Patrick's and for the most part, all Stone Street merchants participates. Ulysses has a solid menu, good cocktails & selection of beer. I must agree with someone else that the indoor set up (with the bar taking up most of the room) is a bit cumbersome. And ordering a drink at the bar can be very challenging at times as you're kept waiting. I must add that I tried Sunday brunch just once and it was fantastic---buffet style and all you can eat with one drink included. All in all, I still like Ulysses/Stone Street and would rate it about 3.5 stars but I'm giving it 4 based on good memories, great times and nice outdoor atmosphere. read more

Came here on a Friday night to get some drinks with my boyfriend. We got beers in the quieter room of the place and went over to the "dancing area" for the rest of the night. The music was a mix of current hip hop songs and some classic songs like "Sweet Caroline." I had fun watching the older crowd of bankers dance around with their banker friends. We were here on a Saturday night after midnight last weekend, on a trip from Chicago. We were staying at the Wall Street Inn on S. Williams and wanted to get a drink. This was about our only option after midnight in the Financial District. The food (comprising nachos, wings) was okay, the drinks were okay. Everything was okay except the service. I had to hunt down a waitress, nobody visited our table until I dragged her over. She was neutral/surly but overall she was efficient once she recognized us as paying customers. I could not believe how much we spent in one hour. But that describes New York anywhere you go I guess. I think the worse thing about the place was how insanely loud the music was, and how inane their musical choices. It was virtually impossible for us to talk. I envied the deaf. I would have gladly poked my eardrums out with a sharp pencil and learned sign language to have not experienced that. read more

When i used to live in the area, Stone Street is the closest thing to night life around the financial district. I do like the decor its dimly lit and the wooden bar stools and tables are nice. Their sharing plates are good when you have a group of people. The pigs in a blanket are buttery and addictive. The best part about Ulysses is the Sunday brunch. $20 buffet. Eggs made to order, bacon, sausage, pancakes or waffles, dessert, alcoholic drink. Who can beat that in NYC? Stone Street in general is cute with tables set up outside and cobblestone street. I also like Smrgs chef for brunch or lunch. Their swedish meatballs are delicious and lingonberry juice nice and sweet. read more

Never tried the food, but everything I have seen looks good. They have outdoor seating on Stone Street, which is nice as long as it isn't too hot out. OK, I know this is a meat-market and it IS nice to sit outside on Stone Street in the summer. It's alright for a little while. But it's so crowded here! There aren't any drink specials and you have to wait forever to get a table. The bouncers were actually a little rude last time I went, and I could only stand on a certain side of the street while waiting for a bench. (Which was, funnily, the farthest spot from the bar!) When we finally got a table, we only had 2 seats for our 3 people. The people sitting with us wouldn't move over, so we eventually left. I've lived in the Financial District for 5 years and somehow completely missed the fact that Ulysses has a $20 Sunday Brunch Buffet until this past weekend!! We arrived at 2pm, but an hour turned out to be more than enough time to enjoy the buffet. There was: Meat: corned beef, turkey Traditional breakfast foods: pancakes, sausages, bacon, croissants, scones, yogurt, granola, cheese, fruit Veggies: broccoli, cauliflower, salad Seafood: salmon, smokes salmon, RAW OYSTERS* and clams There was a separate dessert cart with fruit tarts, chocolate eclairs, cheesecakes, etc. etc. that was pretty decent. The only thing is that I wish they had more to drink -- the buffet did include your choice of a mimosa, bloody mary, or Guiness, but I really would have enjoyed some coffee or tea. *Seriously, show me another brunch buffet in the city that serves freshly shucked oysters for only $20! Yes, the party is happening here, live music late at night (not on every night though), and pretty good food to munch on (mini burgers and all). It's conviently located on stone street, has outdoor and indoor seating a full bar and during lunch time they have the carving blk which is self serve specials of the day usually sandwiches, some fish dish, and a beef choice... I've never had lunch there cuz I'm always there for their liquid meals ; ) but from what I see and hear it is quite delish and reasonably priced average 12-17 bucks for entrée plus 2 sides. If u do sit outside , it's bench seating and be forewarned the benches are not toys during drunken times I learned this the hard way and have bruises to prove it ... Waitresses are awesome there, super friendly and offer free beer to u when they see u have fallen off your bench for the 3rd time and spilled your beer all over the floor. Great for happy hour! Also it seems milfs and golddiggers frequent this place cuz a lot of wall street folk come here so do not be alarmed when u see 45 yr old milfs in tight minis! read more
