This bar I'd randomly end up in whenever I used to be on Stone St..never knew where it is that I'd stumble into, but now that I work around here and get tired of working MUCH MORE, I end up in Ulysses. Became a favorite on the block, the food is delicious here, like seriously! The burgers are juicy, the fries are crispy and they have pretty good sauces for the apps. Had a horrible experience at this bar. My boyfriend asked the bartender for some water for me, and the bartender rudely yelled at him. When I politely asked why, the bartender responded with "What? What? What?" and then cussed at me. I've seen many reviews mentioning the same rude bartender, so I'm puzzled why this person is still employed. I've been here twice on weekend nights, and both times have been strange. Many many young girls who were clearly beyond wasted, guys who are looking to take these girls home. Bartenders should be cutting people off but this doesn't seem like the case. Dealt with an incident last night where a girl was barely able to stand and a guy was trying to kiss her and take her home. She wanted help so we intervened and got the guy "kicked out" only for him to come back in to try to get her to go with her again. Security did not care about this girl because "she's a regular and it happens often". She was either drugged or over served. Regardless, I hope she made it home okay and this whole experience left a horrible taste in my mouth. Too many men running this place who don't care what happens to these young girls. read more

We didn't order any food here this was just a stop on our pub crawl the last night we were in New York. We were there after midnight and were able to snag a bar table with quick service for the beers that we ordered. Not too loud and not too quiet, a really nice vibe and atmosphere. Shortly after we arrived the tables filled up but everybody waited patiently until seats opened to grab the tables that were available. Sit right at the bar every time, no long wait, music playing at a good volume, and pretty good service. Huge busy spot with tons of craft beers on draft and a fun atmosphere. We went here for happy hour and scored some prime spots at the bar. They happened to have a whiskey tasting booth open which was a nice bonus. The bartenders were attentive and friendly. Definitely a fun spot for a drink and some shenanigans. Stopped here with family after our revolutionary war era tour. Very cool on the inside. Feels like an old style tavern. Restaurant is on cobblestone road. Great ambiance. Very friendly service. Right as we walked in they insisted we sit at the best table in the restaurant. They were able to accommodate my pregnancy request for a virgin mojito which I thought was delicious. My husband got the Brooklyn seasonal beer, a lager he enjoyed. For food my husband and I split the salmon salad (the picture is my portion only). It was good. We shared the chili. It's covered in cheddar cheese just like you see with Swiss over French onion soup. Delicious. We thought it needed a little kick so added tabasco sauce. But it was a perfect hearty meal for the rainy day that it was. My mom got the grilled chicken gyro-she said she's had better but it was still good. The fries were good as well(it's hard to mess up a French fry though am I right??) My dad got the steak salad and enjoyed it. We were all very happy with our food choices. The worst service you could ever get. Saturday early night, live music show for $10. I was enjoining just my second beer standing next to the bar when all of a sudden the Irish bartender closed my tap, dropped my credit car in front of me and just kicked me out of the busy bar. More over he called a security guy who pushed me outside through the back door. Have never got such mean service and attitude in general in my life, especially at the place I have been many times before. Without any reason! Looks like he even added the tips closing my tap, needles to say I would not had tipped him a penny. Just on principle I will disclaim this transaction. This was definitely a harbor in the time of storm, albeit for a humorous reason, but the Mac-n-cheese bites and chicken tenders did not disappoint. I have made a new policy to make my words sweet considering how many times I have to eat them. Mmmm... sweet AND salty. I've seen too many awesome live shows here to care about the seating anymore. Plus it leaves room to dance, not sit! And people do dance. I don't know who's doing the sound the past few times I've been this year, but I'm doing a slow clap for you sir. Outstanding. And ultimately, when you're here for the music that's what matters. Well that and my prerequisite doubles served in a pint glass. Most shows I've been to have a $10 door charge but you get that back with the $10 drink ticket. After that, have all the cost and time effective doubles you want. There's food, and I've eaten it in the past, so I remember it being good, but for the sake of journalistic integrity, I'll update when I've mangiare'd there again. There's a lively crowd on Saturdays. Not crowded and there may be some people in formal dinner wear tumbling in. So this makes for the after-party-party spot around Wall Street. They were fun. It's the tale of two groups here at Ulysses. During the week nights, the working suits of the Financial District parade here for good happy hour specials and a solid variety of beer. Come the weekend, enter the locals of the hood coming for an afternoon drink and AYCE brunch. Weeknights or weekends, I'm here for the food and the drinks. Ulysses is a classic bar and grill that has a bit of everything. The charming dark wood decor is fitting of the neighborhood and the spacious interior makes this an ideal place for good crowds. Their lunch specials are one of their better deals, with a good pint and burger. Expect a wait though, Ulysses happens to be one of those places that can be constantly busy day and night. When going uptown isn't an option for happy hour, make it a point to stay here instead. Drinks here seem to be reasonably priced and the beers on tap are fairly good. Service is great when it's not crowded, but when it is (and it almost always is) finding a waitress is almost impossible. It should also be worth mentioning in here that it's a sauna in here unless one is next to the door. Air conditioning does absolutely nothing for this place during the summertime. Brunch here is ironically my favorite time to come here. It's the only time in which it's neither too rowdy and the ambiance is way more tranquil. At $20 per person, it's a little pricey, but the omelettes, cheese plates, lox, and desserts help ease the financial pain. The food is decent, but the quality doesn't quite match the taste. Breakfast food fans can find solace in being able to eat potatoes, salmon, and sausage all on one plate. It's also one of the only brunch buffets I've known, aside from the ones served in hotel restaurants. In short, come for the food and come for the drinks, but remember that downtown is not known for either. read more

On a jaunt down to see the oldest street in America we stumbled across Ulysses - a perfect Irish bar playing American country / Americana music like The Steeldrivers, Devil Makes Three, Colter Wall, Old 97s, Turnpike Troubadours, and more. Good oysters, amazing fries, and even better whiskey / cocktail selection. I wanted to stay here and write lyrics for my next album all night long. Ulysses is a great place to kick back and let your hair down a little. It is great for after work drinks with colleagues and I'd even say it is a great place to hang over the weekend as well. As one of a few reliably good and fun places, you should check it out when in the area. Be warned that Ulysses can seem like a plain Jane pub but it can be soooo much more than that. I have nothing but fond memories and good times in mind when I think of all the time I spent here, with or sans my former colleagues and friends. The food is above average bar food, made upon request, which is possibly why some folks complain about the speed of service. If you arrive with the right expectation, or lack thereof, you should have a great time. The place is pretty spacious and thus you can create a fun atmosphere with your group in your own little section, or have fun people watching until friends appear. The spacing helps to accommodate large reservations and particular events. The staff is friendly and well versed in bar hospitality. Thankfully, the venue is always very clean and well organized when I've frequented. Ulysses is more than alright in my book. Wish it was closer to home! read more

They have two doors, just letting you know. There's the carvery/hot food side and the bar side. I went last week for bar trivia with a few friends of mine where the posted time was 8 or 8:30, literally the page for it has both times so I showed up at 8. Sure enough, 8:30 and sure enough the start time was closer to 9-but that's pretty normal for trivia nights in New York. They wait to get as many takers. So, while I waited I got their engine beer, the Bronx Pale-which I'm not a big fan of it but the flavor opens up a little more when it's warmer and in a cask. Unfortunately, not that good and for 10 bucks really not that good. The dinner special though is pretty damn good. 19.95 for prime rib with all the sides they have and a salad. The pub trivia is also pretty straight forward 10 questions, straight up. Last week there was a tie breaker, which we won! So, I guess I shouldn't complain too much since I basically got my whole dinner and 4 beers between myself and buddy comped. We were about 12 bucks over but the gift certificate had trouble printing out so they just comped our whole meal and drinks. If you're downtown on Sunday-and from the looks of it many aren't since it's the Financial District, you should definitely stop by. read more

You're in New York. It's frickin' hot. You want to hit up an Irish Pub for an ice cold pint, but don't want to land in a douchey establishment filled with Banker Wankers who just jack jaw about their portfolios. So you go to the Ulysses Folk House. It was wonderfully dark in this bar. I mean, might be hard to see where you are going dark. That can be good or bad depending on your level of sobriety. For a sweaty Cuban looking to avoid the steaming NYC streets it was a godsend. The staff was friendly and fast. Multiple people double checked to see if I was being taken care of. Everyone appeared to be helping everyone else. My order was simple, water and a Guinness, but my experience was great. This is the kind of pub I could see myself revisiting. I used to love their Monday night $19 lobster special. Not because it was super great, but any lobster dinner at that price is worth it. They've now extended it to Sunday and Mondays and include a beer, but the price went up to $27. It is still a good deal for Fidi, and it's almost the same - you're just also paying for a beer. Some of the lobster I have had wasn't cooked perfectly and it always seems to come out lukewarm to cool, but it is hard for shellfish to keep the heat. It takes me forever to demolish a lobster because I'm the person who eats every single tiny leg, so it would get cold for me anyway. The thing that usually is annoying is the service. The restaurant is big and it seems hard to get timely service. It seems to go between me switching seats a few times (bar, table, bar, table) before someone sees me to finally getting a server asking me if I need anything way too often. Food takes a while to come out, and the temperature makes me think it was sitting for a minute. In any case, you can't beat the lobster deal and I will continue to come back, I just won't be in a rush. read more

I have always loved Ulysses. Tonight I met trina the bartender. She was very rude to my girlfriend, who is a complete sweetheart. At the end of the night, I asked to close out. She said "I don't have your card". And walked away immediately (It was not busy at all). I then asked if she could check again. She rolled her eyes, checked again, found my card and said "here's your gold card" in a condescending way. I said back "you were very rude to my girlfriend earlier and now me and that's not very nice"... she then decided seemlessly transition into a barrage of insults as I left. SO picture this... it's st. Patrick's day and it's mayhem at stone street (as per usual) and all we want to do is get into our favorite bar... Ulysses. Ross, the bouncer in the back, told us that if we waited in line that someone would get us soon to let us in. We wait in line. THEN we see Ross, behind us, letting a group in before us. Me and my big New Yorker mouth yelled at Ross, in a friendly way, and said that he better let us in next because I ain't blind and I can see him letting people in before us. With a laugh and a smile, Ross promptly let us in shortly after I yelled at him. Went with my neighbor after a very long and stressful day (almost lost my puppy). We met two guys and my neighbor went to drop his dog (we live just around the corner). I was verbally assaulted by one of the two white guys (he said some graphic sexual things to me and picked up on my neighbor because he was guy)... when I stoop up to him he threatened me and said he would call the cops and so I told him to go ahead and that I would wait- his reply "well you know what they'll do to you" ... I was asked then by the manager and the bouncer to leave and have been banned from that place. At no time did they ask me what happened. They threw me out and the 2 guys stayed. Few days later as I was walking my dog I saw them do the same to a non Caucasian person- I hate calling on the race card... but I absolutely felt attacked as a black woman and the manager is such a RUDE man alongside with most of their bouncers. So much fun!! We went there for a friends birthday in late April, they don't take reservations but there's so much outdoor seating that I have never been unable to find a spot. We were a party of seven and we got in right away. The food we had was really good, the chicken tenders and fries are both great bar bites. We also had a piece of cheesecake for dessert which was outstanding. They waitstaff was definitely busy and the service was a little slow, so we ordered our drinks two at a time. We never felt ignored, we could see them running around. It's a busy place on a busy street, so you get what you get. The rating is essentially solely based on the ambiance. Last summer I had an interest in seeking out old, atmospheric taverns like out of the Penny Dreadful series with Josh Hartnett where you would find a motley selection of society's bottom rung dwellers, mystery, and candlelight. I believe I went late on a Saturday night so I did not experience the Wall St crowd. The space that was not hosting the live band was shaped in a ring around the bar staff and was about two people wide so you would have to intimately past a stranger coming the other way. It was rather dark but I found a partitioned seat at the bar where two people could have a private conversation without being completely walled in or visible to wandering eyes. That space was a very cool find. I don't have much commentary on the crowd because no one bothered me in my nook. I will comment on bar food in general though because it cost 20 (including tip) for a shepherd's pie...so not worth it. After I had finished and literally made some loops around again, I found an adult couple seated in the cozy spot I had been in. I highly recommend this restaurant if you're looking for good food at a very decent price with plenty of choices including unlimited oysters and jumbo shrimp. They also have outdoors seating during the summer months and the restaurant is spacious so no need to worry about reservation or wait time. As soon as I got there I asked for a Kronenbourg, yet she brings me out a Paulaner. The second time I ask for the same Kronenbourg, then she proceeds to tell me that she's out of that, Heineken, Corona, and basically everything. You could have told me that the first time. We asked for 2 orders of fries, she brings out 1. My friend goes inside to order a pitcher because the outside service was slow, she then sees him and says you can't order inside "that why waitresses exist" with an attitude. This was clearly because it would affect her tip - trust me, your tip was affected as soon as we sat. Ambiance: 8/10 Stone Street is always lively.
