My bf and I went here around two pm on a Saturday. The restaurant was lovely and dim, cool and quiet. I had the sashimi deluxe, 16 pieces of chef's choice sashimi in an elaborate presentation. The fish was delightful. Fresh tasting and served quickly. He had the spicy roll combo, and it was also beautifully presented. He said it was delicious and the small piece I sampled had wonderful flavor. Our meals began with miso soup and ginger dressed salad. I'm originally from Tampa, but live in Chicago now. My go to sushi place on Dale Mabry used to be Sushi Alive until they closed their Carrollwood location. Being back for the week, I was craving some sushi and got a recommendation to try this place out. I went for an early lunch right as they opened at 11AM. No wait and empty tables (although that didn't last long). The size of the restaurant was smaller than I had expected, but that isn't a huge problem. It is very casual, so it is good for a low-key meal with some friends or family. The staff is very attentive and gave GREAT suggestions on what we should order for our first time visiting. They do have a menu with lunch specials, but I was told that the special rolls are more worthwhile. My favorite rolls were the Tiger Roll (such fresh tasting fish) and the Angry Lobster Roll! Highly recommend! The person I was with likes sushi with brown rice (my first time trying it this way) and I have to say it was so goodddd. I didn't feel like I missed out on flavors from changing up the sushi. I'll definitely be back to try some other rolls when I'm in the area. read more

They have great varieties of sushis and sashimis. Im a huge fan of Otoro sushi but unfortunately, they didnt have it when I dined in. I ordered 2 portions of salmon skin roll. I have to say, its awesome. The Uni was superb. My husband didnt think so but I think both tuna and uni were fresh and did not left a fishy or gamey taste in my mouth. So, there you go. The ambiance is great in the restaurant, it's on the darker side so it's a great place for a date. The food can get pricey but it's so good, I recommend the rock n roll, cowboy and shrimp tempura rolls. Their veggie tempura app was good as well. Service is friendly. read more

There is no question that Umami Sushi is a 10 stars restaurant. There's quick service, great quality, wonderful vibe. The lights on the walls on the interior of the restaurant change color which is pretty cool. They use the highest quality of rice and very little rice on the rolls so you get the biggest bang. Not only that, they also make their soy sauce which you can really taste the difference. The taste is much less salty and is more healthy for you. Here are the rolls that we ate that were recommended to us: volcano roll, monster roll, Tiger roll, and the out of control roll. I would recommend all of those especially together :-) Run don't just walk to Umami- you will not regret it. This is definitely one of the top three sushi restaurants this side of the Mississippi. read more

To be fair, I have to admit to being a bit of a sob when it comes to sushi. I'm also not a huge fan of the Americanized rolls with every possible combination of ingredients where the fish itself is indiscernible from everything else. My strong preference in sushi is simplicity where you can appreciate the quality of the fish as well as the balance of the rice and nori. In particular, how the rice is prepared is of great importance. Now that this is out of the way, Unami does a great job with the service and decor. The specialty rolls are beautiful and very colorful. The LED lights on the plate added to presentation and received several "ohhhs" from our table packed with 3 tweens and two adults. So overall service and presentation were the highlights of the evening. The taste is fine if you like your sushi with a lot of glam and ready for Instagram. The traditional rolls (tuna, salmon, yellowtail) were not very good however. The rice is gummy and the fish has been chopped up and mixed with panko as a filler. The result is a very dry, flavorless, and oddly crunchy like stale cereal without milk. I expect that Unami will do well since great sushi remains a weakness in Tampa Bay unfortunately. For my money, I prefer traditional Japanese sushi where the focus is on the fish. read more

Easily my new favorite sushi place when I need an uni fix. I've been here so many times even though it's out of my 5 mile radius rule. That's how much I like this place! Not a very big place but I have never had an issue getting a table with minimal wait. Nicely decorated with a warm ambiance. My favorite rolls are the Umami and Vampire. Seriously, get the Vampire. You won't regret it. The uni(sea urchin) is fresh here considering how difficult it is to get fresh uni in Tampa. You'll know when it's bad when you have that nasty aftertaste. Of course they have other yummy rolls too. Service is good and your order comes out fairly quick, but don't rush here because I may need to wait for a table if too many peeps come:) read more

Date lunch with the hubs! This place is super close to home so decided to check it out. They open at 12:30pm on Saturdays. The restaurant is small but roomy. It's got a cozy dim atmosphere and the staff is super friendly. They have a sushi bar in the back where you can see the sushi chefs making the sushi fresh. They have lunch specials until 3pm daily which are quite reasonably priced. My hubs got the 3 roll special which was more than enough food. I ordered the bento box with Katsu chicken and I subbed the California roll for the Tampa roll ($2 up-charge) which was an excellent decision as the Tampa roll was REALLY delicious! There was so much food in the bento box that I couldn't eat it all and ended up taking the rest home. Service was excellent, food was delicious and tasted fresh. There were 2 parties celebrating birthdays while we were there and 1 that had a gluten free diet. Overheard the waitress assisting on what they could eat, so very helpful. For the birthdays, the restaurant played a birthday song over the speakers and brought out the dessert that the party brought in. Very nice. We will definitely be back. This was a really disappointing lunch from a place that had good enough reviews for this experience to catch me off guard. I ordered my usual California roll and Shrimp Tempura roll and asked for the tail to be removed. The instructions weren't followed, which I'm sort of used to and had to get really hands on with my sticky sushi roll to try cutting the shrimp tail off with chopsticks. Blunt instruments are not the ideal tool for that task. Upon eating the first few pieces of both rolls, I noticed they kept falling apart. This caught me off guard slightly, until I looked at the ingredient quality and found a green slime coating the inside of the rolls. I haven't made sushi in awhile, but I don't remember the seaweed ever being that wet and funky looking. All of the rolls taste off as well, and I'm hoping that I don't get sick from this as the quality of the ingredients is somewhat alarming for sushi, but all of the fish is cooked so I'm hoping for the best. I have been to several sushi places in Tampa but hadn't found a "great" one. Then a few friends brought me here... this is definitely one of the best spots in town! A little dark inside, even during the daytime, but decent decor with a few neon lights thrown in. Even the bathroom is actually pretty cool! The rolls are very flavorful and there are some great combinations. My new favorite is the Cowboy Roll with steak and avocado, topped with spicy mayo. I used to always have to add avocado to my Philly Roll anywhere else, but they already include it! I have eaten in twice and picked up an order - consistently great taste, presentation, and quality each time! I don't know how this place has 4 1/2 stars!!! The food is terrible and tasteless. We ordered the Japanese chicken appetizer and it was nothing like it should be. The chicken had NO flavor at all. The sauce was sad and again no flavor. I even tried to help it by asking for chili oil/paste but they did not have it...really. What Asian restaurant has no chili anything. Next was the Pad Thai. The minute it hit the table I knew I would not eat it. It was swimming in this thick sauce with a huge brownish lemon on top. I did taste it because it could have been good but no, it was awful. The sauce was very sweet with a hint of spice but not in a good way. My son said his sushi was OK and asked what happened to the place. The food use to be better. Prices are fair for high food quality, especially compared to area competitors' higher rates, but lower food quality. Unlike other sushi establishments, they do not load up on rice and skimp the fish; nay--Umami does just the opposite. Little rice, and lots of fish! The fish is the star of every dish! I love to get the tuna pizza appetizer, maki rolls (their spicy varieties are delicious - spicy tuna, spicy salmon, spicy scallop, spicy conch, spicy octopus, etc.), hand rolls (eel and avocado), the combos are also great. One of the few places in the area to get fresh uni. To-go orders are conveniently packed and accurate. I would eat here daily. Went there based on reviews... and of course.... they were total BS. No, it does not look like the well lit hip place in the pictures! No there is not a guy in a white chef's coat making your sushi, but rather 3 young, sloppy looking dudes with the personality of dish rags... speaking another language amongst themselves. I wanted to chat with my friend so we sat at the sushi bar.... mistakenly. Not sushi bar seats, table chairs, so you feel like a small kid at an oversized dinner table sitting too low. But whatever. We were handed old dirty beat up menus by a very pleasant server as the 3 amigos were talking about us to her; she felt it necessary to translate because she too knew that they were rude. Lot's to choose from. I opted for some special rolls as did my friend. Based on the atmosphere, we chose to skip the sashimi and uni.... because nothing looked fresh. Our food came. No, your sushi does not come to the table or bar, looking spectacular and appetizing...it was just placed on the plate.... but there was a kitchy light cube that my radish was draped over. I think I liked one out of my 3 rolls... because it was eel and avocado. The specialty rolls were terrible.... sloppily wrapped in seaweed... and too big to eat in one bite. Everything was cold and sauced. There was nothing special on the board menu either. Our calamari was crispy large rings; no tentacles at all...but good. There were no exotic fish or clams in the chiller or any sign of squid; they wanted $12 for uni!! Got green tea ice cream which was good and fried ice cream which was good as well. These fake cheerleader yelpers are getting really annoying because i wasted a birthday dinner on this place....and a bunch of money. read more

I'd have to say their bento boxes are really good and with a nice portion. I had the Mexican roll in place of the California roll that comes with it and I'd have to say it is on the larger side but I can't complain about that, it was flavorful and fresh. The fried rice is up there with some of the best in the area and the teriyaki steak was tender for dinner and a little more tough for the lunch but it's also cheaper. I definitely do go back and it's one of my go to spots when I get the time for lunch. read more
