I've been looking for a great salon in San Jose for months and the search is finally over! Yanin did an amazing job on my hair. I've wanted to get an undercut for ages and ages, but I was really nervous about getting the haircut I wanted, and I needed someone who had prior experience doing them. Not only that, but I've had problems at other salons before because my hair is very long and very thick. Yanin knew exactly what needed to be done, knew what questions to ask, and knew how to make me feel comfortable that all would go well. And it did! My haircut is incredible, and I was treated so, so well. I'll be back the next time I have enough money to spend, because the haircut was pricey... but since it had been several years since my last cut, I think it was totally worth it. Hands down, this is the best place I have ever gone to. The customer service is really good and the hairdressers have a lot of talent. Both times I got this girl named Adrian and she was so good! The first time I went to her she gave me this beautiful and sultry long layered haircut that was absolutely stunning. I kept getting a lot of compliments and I didn't have to do anything to it. This second time just this last week Adrian also cut my hair and suggested I go shorter and more modern. She gave be this wild, amazing diffusion and brought out my natural curly hair. The next day I blowed dried it straight and it was very sweet looking. I can put it up, leave it be, straighten it or curl it and it looks great. Very versatile look that compliments my features. My first impression of Umbrella is that the place seemed extremely well-thought-out with the design and display of the store. I came in for a Men's haircut by Jan Michael who was professional yet friendly in every aspect when cutting my hair. I think it would be worth noting that I'm picky with the way my hair is cut and I have a certain expectation of the way it'll come out when it's done. Despite that fact, Jan Michael gave me a haircut that was basically perfect and definitely worth the higher price compared to local barbershops. I will definitely be going back here again in the future because I can't think of anything wrong with the place or the services provided to me. This review is for Anna, she is great! My normal stylist cancelled on me the day before a wedding i was in so i had to scramble to find another salon to take me. Umbrella got me an appt the next day with Anna. She is very sweet, takes her time and listens to what you want. I walked out feeling like a blonde bombshell again :-)! Cant wait to see her again. I absolutely love Adrian! She is such a lovely person and does amazing work. She has nailed my color every time, ensuring the tone matches my complexion perfectly. Her cuts are on point (she is the only stylist that I confidently trust cutting a sleek a-line bob) and she remembers you cut/color evolution from visit to visit (I always appreciate when a stylist remember me and the look I am striving for) She also gives amazing hugs! :) As for the salon, the location is a bit annoying. They provide 2 hrs of validation in the parking garage across the street, but if your appointment takes longer than 2 hrs, you have to pay up the difference. The salon does offer coffee, tea, and mineral water, which is a nice service. They also provide smocks to wear during your appointment to keep any hair dye or hair from getting on your clothes. The overall vibe is hip and would recommend to a friend, although it is a bit pricey $$$. read more

I've had Dacia color and cut my hair and Angelika cut my hair for several years now. I don't get a haircut very often just because I love long hair but every time I go in, both the girls are super funny and always make me feel like a princess and the haircut is phenomenal. Umbrella is different than other salons I've gone to because they rely heavily on educating their clients about their hair. Everything from maintenance to change, they are not afraid to be honest. Even when I wanted to color my hair, Dacia was very patient and listened to what I needed but told me that going too light too fast would damage my hair so suggested another hair color, which I am absolutely in love with! The atmosphere inside in really nice! Everyone is pretty young and outgoing and always seems like a party when I go in there. All haircuts come with a wash and a mini massage which is to die for. Definitely won't ever be going anywhere else for my hair needs. Ps. their oribe products smell AMAZING! read more

Last fall I went in for cut and color with Anna. Anna fried my hair and gave me a tiny 3min trim for $300. After going home I realized my hair had been fried. I called to see her right away and she told me I had to stop blowing drying my hair.... she couldn't take responsibility and she gave me a hair cut to help the severe damage. It was still so bad that she told me to come back in 6 weeks for another cut. I go, get my hair cut and to this day my hair is still fried. At checkout, Anna tried to get me to pay for the second cut. I told her it was insane to have me pay for her frying my hair and eventually she said okay but without first trying to guilt trip me and saying "I'll pay for it" as if it were coming out of her pocket even though she offered to cut my hair in the first place. This place is my go to salon! I have been coming here for a little over a year now and I love it! I have never not been happy with the work done to my hair. I have progressively been going lighter, and my hair does not ever feel over processed or dry. They really care about the integrity of your hair. The atmosphere at Umbrella is lovely as well and I love the Oribe hair products that they use. Sandra at the front desk is so sweet every time! I literally love her. The only thing that I'd say needs improvement is the front desk communication and scheduling. If you are over 25, this salon is not for you. If you have children, this salon is not for you. If you weigh more than 100lbs, this salon is not for you. If you don't look like a haute couture fashion model, this salon is not for you. I came in as a model for a blow out during a special blow out class. The instructor (I think it was Christian) looked at me and said, "Your bangs are too short and your curls are too perfect. The style is dated, you look old." So what if I do?? I wasn't there for a consultation, I was there to provide a head of hair for a stylist to use to learn some new blow out techniques. The instructors comments to me were inappropriate and insulting. If he thinks this would make me rush to his chair for an update, he's got another thing coming! Then he proceeded to talk to my stylist in a very condescending way throughout my time there. I don't care how "good" you are at your job, buddy, demeaning my stylist is never appropriate, and in front of me is even worse. I'd sooner be bald than come to Umbrella Salon again. Real people...find another salon. There are a bunch of great places out there to have your hair done without the attitude. read more

Time to move on... I've been a client of Kien's for over 15 years now. When I first started to go to him, he charged $40 for a haircut and since then, it has gone up drastically. I understand pricing needs to increase over time, especially for new clients but $150 for a haircut..really? I went in for a haircut in Jan. 2014 and was shocked to be charged $140, but I was even more shocked when I went back in for another haircut last month and they raised it again another $10. I had asked the receptionist, "did you guys increase your prices again?" and her response was, "we increase it once a year." Umm...Jan. 2014 - June 2014 is NOT 1 YEAR? If you are going to charge that type of money for a haircut, it better be so outstanding that I shouldn't have to come back for it to get fixed! My bangs were totally uneven so I went in 2 days ago to get them fixed and Kien barely even greeted me, which has become very common the last couple of times I've seen him. People come to the salon to get away from their daily stresses and to get pampered, right? Well, that is certainly not the case for me anymore being one of Kien's customers. After he was done cutting my bangs, he literally just walked away....no goodbye, no thank you, no towel to wipe all the hair off of my face...nothing!! When I walked up to the receptionist to purchase product, I asked her if i could get a towel to wipe the hair off of my face and her response was, "Uhh...I don't have a towel but here's a napkin." How can you let your client walk out w/out wiping the hair off her face and making her feel special? Isn't that what the whole experience is about?? I really hate to write this review, but I just feel the need to share this so that the person who will no longer be cutting my hair, will realize that he needs to be a lot more professional and to treat his trusted clientele with more dignity and class after spending so much of their hard-earned money on a haircut. I can't keep wasting my time and money walking out of the salon feeling worse than when I came in. I deserve much better treatment than this, and so does anyone else who's willing to spend beaucoup $$ to pamper themselves once in awhile!! While I will no longer be a client of Kien's, I don't want others to think that the other stylists working at the salon do their customer's wrong in this same way. I rarely write reviews but the only reason why I'm giving this salon 2 stars, rather than 1 is because both Christian and his assistant were very nice people. But beyond that I can't say anything else nice. I have very fine thin hair. I asked for a collarbone length blunt cut (it was a length Christian discussed with me at length and we agreed to prior to starting). First my hair was washed completely unnecessarily considering it was still wet from me washing it at home less than an hour earlier (pretty sure they did it, so I can be charged for that too). Then when I finally got the cut I ended up with hair definitely above my shoulders (so, a good 2-3 inches shorter than what we had agreed to), super choppy on the bottom (now that I've had time to examine it at home I can frankly say I hate it), shorter on the back (Christian told me he did it that way but didn't ask me prior to doing it if I'm okay with that and if he had bothered to ask me he would've known that I absolutely loathe this type of cuts) but that's not the worst part - the whole shorter on the back thing is actually only on one side and as my husband lovingly called it when he saw it at home, my hair is "having a nice little dip on one side". Also, the hair parting was done poorly, so when I went home and let my hair part properly on its own, I ended up with 4 pretty significant chunks on the opposite side causing for them to be a good 1 inch longer than the rest of the hair, so I had to cut them myself. Ah, an in the end, my hair was straightened...that may sound totally innocent but I didn't ask to have it straightened or styled, and had I been asked if I wanted it, I wouldn't have chosen straight, I always prefer waves/curls. But instead, another executive decision was made in my place and no choice was given. Sorry but I hate when a stylist decides they know what I want better than I do and doesn't even ask. And for all of this, I ended up paying $150 + $30 tip (yes, I tipped because I'm not a d**k). Frankly, I want to cry now because every time I see my hair in the mirror, I'm so angry. And it's not fixable because the only way to "fix" it would be to cut even more of it which I'm definitely not willing to do. So, not sure if this was a miscommunication type of a situation or what, but I tend to believe the issue wasn't in me because even basic things like the length of the cut we had agreed upon was missed by a long long shot. read more

I've been going to Kien for over 10 years. His cuts used to be around $75 and over the past few years, they have sky rocketed to $150. I almost feel like he does this because he doesn't want to cut as much hair and instead spend more of his time doing runway shows and photo shoots. I get it, you're a big deal. I'm extremely picky about who touches my hair and Kien does do a good job...$150 good?!?!? Not sure. However, he tends to be a bit snobbish and does whatever he wants, regardless of what you ask for. I've never a bad cut (except for the mullet incident), but it's just not what I asked for. So why did I stay with him for so long? I used to LOVE going to Umbrella, but it seems that as his prices have gone up, so has his snobbish attitude...and at $150, it's time to move on. Beyond disappointed... I went to Roz who came highly recommended by a friend. I had subsequently been following her on instagram for the past 4 months, and was totally sold and in awe of the work she posted. My experience/outcome: -my hair color did not look like the picture I referenced, not the right shade, not even the right effect. -hair was brassy after toner (even though I told her from the gate, I had a strong aversion to brassy highlights). I wouldn't have minded that the hair was brassy on the roots, except that I had to point it out... It's as if she did not want to validate my observation. It was ...indeed brassy plain and simple, own it- no big deal I wasn't even mad, only worried that she didn't cop to it or even worse, didn't see what I saw :/ -after I pointed out the orange she re-toned it, though she seemed a little off-put. -result was better after 2nd tone, at least in their lighting & sun down. However- I did not understand why the top was even highlighted in the first place Bc the pic I ref'ed had roots on top Not highlights. -the highlights (bayalage) seemed decent but did not look like the pic, she basically highlighted my whole head and did not look any diff than basic Highlights-If I had wanted run of the mill highlights I would have gone to the lady I usually go to, and in doing so would have been less than half her cost! I was going for the fancy ombré bayalage effect. The final outcome was totally lackluster and not like pic provided^ -hair cut: she immediately wanted to cut off several inches, thankfully I declined and only allowed a generous 3 1/2. (I get it -I needed a cut, but my hair is thick, wavy and curly, let's not be rash here! There is nothing worse in my opinion than short fluffy bozo clown hair and it's me that'l have to deal with taming the beast not her) -I was unimpressed and disappointed by the lack of resemblance by the time apt was over, but to make matters worse (my fault for not inquiring) the bill was an outrageous 290... ?!I would perhaps understand if she delivered what I wanted first try and charged maybe...260 (maximum) ...But 290!? The result was so basic and not even what I wanted! Ugh Adding insult to injury as I diligently paid the outrageous bill plus a small tip (Bc I always feel intuitively bad not tipping) I asked the front desk girl for parking validation, she agreed then said, " We only validate the parking ACROSS the street!" Ha! thanks that info would have been Great to know PRIOR to my apt! I mean really? Nobody could have told me that when they confirmed my very first appointment? What is this ...90210? Another $15 for parking.. I work hard for my money and while I don't mind the occasional splurge I am not into thoughtless spending that can be easily avoided. I also don't mind paying for quality service, so long as u get the quality and expectations are met. Meanwhile, ... parking gate is stalled and I'm waiting for security to manually let out about 9 cars (I'm in the back) naturally I begin playing with my hair which is when I noticed the layers were totally off. Btw I asked roz to use straightener. Request Ignored... And just as I feared... The stupid round brush concealed major inconsistencies. At this point I decided to turn around and re park via street Bc the unevenness was seriously appalling yes it was THAT BAD. I go back and roz (sort of apologizes not really) and "attempts to fix them" By the time she finishes chopping away more and more, the long layers I love are now short and the first is to my chin! :( if you have thick hair that needs straightening you probably know the terror. Awful. 5 hours later from original apt. I'm on the verge of tears as I leave and tell my self it doesn't look bad. But problem was is it also didn't look great... And It was also was not what I wanted and Moreover was NOT $290 worthy! Or shall I say 315+ worthy. Sadly, Went home only to realize there was still brassiness on top. (Better than first tone but not completely resolved) 3 days later I work up nerve to express my dissatisfaction and They schedule me with someone else... I begin to feel bad and decide that I should at least give roz the opportunity to appease the disappointing situation Bc maybe it was an off day for her and I know everyone has those. -My mistake. She was not all at all sincere when I returned the following week for retone and to address the major issue of shorter layers as a result of her error. No apology. When I showed her the pic I originally showed her she said that the pic was all lighting and hard to see! Hmmm well I'm that case why on earth didn't she ask me to clarify or see another it. Oh yeah. I have been going to her for many years now, first for a correction for warm brassy hair that she managed to fix without fail. She's very thorough, and wow she has a great personality, she remembers everything! She's absolutely amazing with highlighting my hair so that it looks very natural and classy. I have so much trust in her, that I literally walked in to my last two appointments and said, I don't care, I trust you, I generally just want to stay somewhat light-colored, the rest is up to you. I've booked tons of appointments with her now at this point and I've seriously never been disappointed with the outcome, always left feeling brand new, and HAPPY! I am giving this review based only on one employee. Here's the background story: I used to go to Jen, she is awesome. I went to her for a while and loved that she would listen to what I had to say and then show me her talents! She would always make sure that everything was okay. However, she moved, and I didnt go there for a while. Finally, the volume of my hair was getting out of control so I figured I should go back since the place is AWESOME. Unfortunately, I made the biggest mistake of my life. I went to Roz . I told her repeatedly that I did NOT want to lose length, but want style and shape. I totally understand if I had to lose a litle bit of length if the ends were dead etc. But from the front of my hair she cut off at least 2 inches!! Thats a lot. I am going to my sisters wedding next weekend (out of the country -- its a destination wedding) and have plans and got the trial already to put my hair up in an updo. However now that this woman chopped off my hair, I wont be able to. She ruined it. She was nice enough to not charge me for the cut today as I was in tears and mad/sad but what am I going to do about the fact that I already paid for a consultation with the hair people my sis hired for her wedding? Now I dont even know how Im going to do my hair. In the middle of my hair appointment, she left for 15 mins to go help a co worker with her client. She gave me a complimentary mask which was okay but her leaving and coming back just made things worse......my hair appointment lasted 2.5 hours and all I got is a haircut and a glaze. I dont get why it took so long, Jen NEVER took that long, and neither has anyone else. I mean its different if you're getting highlights or a perm or something complicated. All I wanted was some razoring, shape, style and glaze to cover up greys in the front. The salon overall is AMAZING........so I dont want people to view my lack of starts too negatively. Angelika hacked my hair I really needed a hair cut because my hair was damage, I've been waiting for my stylist to be back from medical leave, she works at Di'Moda salon in Willoglen. I decided to go to Umbrella for one reason, my stylist used to work there and she always spoke highly about the salon and their education program back, that was back on the day when they were a small salon. Things are different they look good on editorial but I wish their stylists had pictures of their real people hair work! that would of made my decision of piking up a stylist much wise. I had my hair cut by Angelica, I should just walk out of there when I saw SHE HAD NOT CLEAN UP HER TOOLS a after her last client, I end up asking to fix my hair because the style did not look like the pictures I showed her,she grabbed the thinning shears and start hacking my hair!!! A good hair dresser knows that with curly hair "ends need friends", she did not like I asked to have my hair blow dry straight, she opens a drawer to get a brush out and all hair brushes are disgusting dirty full of hairs to the max! Those brushes had not been clean for months!!! I told her twice she seem rush she said no that I had 90 minutes then I realized she had someone with color developing on the shampoo bowl! She started asking around for someone to rinse her client for her and sadly no one wanted to help, they use to have assistants for that! So she was rushing and burn my scalp over and over I complain and all she said with a valley girl accent " my blow dryer gets so hot it's crazy" never said SORRY, I was livid!! I'll start by saying that my hair looks fine, it's just not what I asked for... I said that I wanted really low maintenance but to hide grey and it is blonde all over. Not the baylage style that I asked (and paid for). Now I'll have to get it done again in a couple weeks once the blonde starts to grow out. I said I loved my current cut and just wanted a trim. I specifically stated that I hate layers. You guessed it: layers! And not just a little either, 6 inches of layers! It will takes ages for me to grow my hair back out. I started coming to Umbrella Salon when I was working downtown. I choose Angelika to do my hair cut based on the reviews and pictures. She did not disappoint! Super cute little Latina and she did my hair like a boss. I had her cut it and color (over grays) and she always gave me a stunning sexy cut. And she's knowledgeable about my hair texture and the perfect products. She works fast and is 100% profesh! Unfortunately, I left my job in San Jose and work/live in Campbell now. ANGELIKA! Worst Stylist Ever. I have never seen any stylist as unprofessional as her... to prove my point this is my story that happened today. I had two appointments for two people on the same day, one at 11 am and the other one at 1 PM. I was running late by 15 mins and I called the salon to inform the same. DIANA (Receptionist) picks up the call and was super rude to me saying "You have to reschedule... bla bla bla". DIANA... drop the FAKE ATTITUDE at work and learn to be polite to customers. Oh wait! You might want to learn a new word "SORRY"! Anyway was in the salon by 11.17 AM and ANGELIKA comes to us and she is like "I can only take one person because you are late", she did pathetic job with the haircut and after the haircut I tried to convince her to accommodate my friend at 1 PM. Her exact words were "Stop by 1 PM I will see if I can take you in". DIANA on the other hand said she will call if ANGELIKA has time to take my friend in at 1 PM. Later I get a call around 12.50ish to say ANGELIKA can take you in at 1 PM. I was 20 mins away from the salon, as soon as I got the call I rushed to the salon and just when I was in the parking lot at 1.08 PM I get a call from DIANA saying (exact words) "You will have to reschedule the appointment because your friend has long hair and Angelika cannot take you in". SERIOUSLY??? Is this the way you treat your customers? I have never experienced this kinda treatment with any other salon. HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED with Umbrella Salon only because of two terrible people "ANGELIKA" and "DIANA" who cannot do their job well!!! read more

I am extremely disappointed with this place. I made an appointment for a hair cut with Amy on June 14th but the hair cut did not happen. I heard this great haircut place from a friend and I looked forward to it so much. Especially it's very hard to get an appointment on the weekends. However, something unexpected happened... After several email confirmation and reminder of certain charge if no show, text message confirmation, I got a call on June 13th, 5:00pm telling me that Amy won't be available on the next day that she made a mistake. It sounded pretty ridiculous to me and not very understandable. The receptionist told me that they are sorry and they know that I am a first time customer. I was very disappointed since I am the kind of person has plans for everything. It just felt so bad when the plan was interrupted for not very acceptable reasons... So I asked politely is anyone else going to be available to give me a haircut on the 14th since I really don't have time to come in during the week and it's really challenging to make an appointment on the following weekend. I would expect they'd help to accommodate my appointment at my convenience because they are the one who messed up the schedule online. Unfortunately the answer I got was "No, we don't have anyone available." And there is NO chance I can get an appointment with another hair salon on Sunday with such short notice. I tried...everywhere else that looks good are fully booked. I don't feel I have been treated the right way. No matter how talented the hire stylist is, the service you provide that shut people out of the door is not appreciated...Hope you don't treat customers like this in the future. read more

my stylist at Umbrella Salon, Karla, never ceases to amaze me. every time i come in, she is so friendly and helpful. came back today for my monthly bang trim, and i gotta say, this girl is amazing! since i usually come to the salon on school days since it's the only time i really go down to Downtown SJ during the day, I'm usually in all my scrub-tastic glory. there's been quite a few times where i've come in with my hair just in a pony tail, or pulled back in a headband. however, Karla always gets to cutting my bangs, then spritzes some of their delicious-smelling hair products, teases my hair a bit, and i walk out with great looking hair! aside from my bang trims, Karla has done a wonderful job with my hair cuts too. thankfully, she has listened to me since day 1 that i started coming to Umbrella - i always tell her that i'm trying to grow my hair out. so whenever i come for a haircut, she gives me some great layers, and although i leave with my hair almost at the same length, i've gotten a great cut. my first visit to Umbrella was back in May. my hair has grown more in the past 7 months than it has in the past 2 years previous to when i started coming here. my old stylist just never listened to me and always thinned my hair out way too much. needless to say, i love Umbrella! it is pricey, but it's worth it. read more

Oh my freaken gwad! I have no luck with my hair lately! As far as I remember since I was a teen, I been dying my own hair. Usually it turns out pretty decent, something I can even evenly dye my hair so it almost has a highlight effect. Anyway... haven't been dying my hair for almost a year, few weeks ago I decided that I should try dyed my hair again to uplift my color. My nature hair color is dark dark brown hair... and I don't really like black hair at all. Doesn't suite my skin color. When I dyed my own hair I tend to go through brunette color... this time around I try to dyed my hair to brunette, instead of lighten my hair color, it actually darken it to more of black color. And it slightly lighten with wash. After this upsetting experiences and I will like screw this. It's time to invest some money and get it done right. So I look up this salon and read some reviews. Afterward I gave them a call for an appointment for next day. Not really having any stylist in mind, I decided to try my luck when they told me XXXXX will be available on the time slot I asked for. they are located heart of downtown San Jose. I didn't know that they validate parking. So ask them about it... I end up wasting $14 bucks for the parking lot next door of this salon. Anyway.. back to my story. The stylist was very nice... asked me what I wanted... I show her few pictures I saved on my phone...from blonde highlight to dark brown highlight. I told her I never spend any hefty money on hair before and I want some change. I definetely want to lighten up my hair color. I told her my hair dye disaster. She agree that my hair color is too dark for me and suggest the dark brown with mix lighter highlight will be look cute on me. Since I am determined to get my hair right this time. I agree to go along with her suggestion. She told me all these new hair wordage that i never hear of... the process of stripping my hair color, color, toning etc...At first she quote me $220 dollars... honestly. That is a lot if you ask me...all I could think of is that nice pair of shoes I can buy with that money!!!! But whatever... I was prepared to dish out some money this time anyway. So I suck it up and hoping the stylist will know the best. Anyway.... the whole process took 4 hours.. a lot hair to hair wash station and back. During the process, she told me she had forgot to quote me for the root touch up and normally she charge over $100 for that, since she didn't told me ahead of time, she was gonna charge me $90 bucks for it. Sigh~....SERIOUSLY~ what can I said to that????? I said fine... my total bill at the end comes up to be $290 before tip. and my hair result? A-Okay.... after 4hours of patiently waiting... when I first saw my final hair color... I couldn't decided what to make out of it. It was more a medium brown color with few subtle highlights. Did I ever mention I hate medium brown color? Argh.... my immediately thought is seriously... did I freaken just wasted my money? I told myself my ultimately decision whether to like it or not is to show my friends and family and see what they thinks. 4-5 days has pass... so far.. not one person has gave me any compliment and only when I told them I dyed my hair then they said will said something. The stylist told me that since my hair was dark, it is hard to lighten up so much at once... I need to take this slow and gradually go lighter.... I don't know much about hair color, but seriously? I can't afford paying over $200 every 3 months just for my hair. I much rather buy myself a nice purse. You know... looking close at my hair. I am quiet disappointed. This color is not my color of choice at all. Yes... the stylist did do a pretty good job blending in the highlight.. but other than that.... I don't feel like this is money well spent. read more

After reading many amazing reviews I called and scheduled an appointment for later that day. After sitting in traffic for 30 minutes, just as I was parking they called me and told me that they would not be able to "fit" me in today. I scheduled the appointment in the morning and they didn't realize this until 5 minutes before my appointment at 6:00 PM? Seriously! To make things worse, they were not sincere in their apology and did not offer any sort of solution to rectify the situation. I am completely shocked that a salon with such a great reputation would treat a client like this. read more

My husband and I have been going to Kien ( owner) of Umbrella for over 7years. He is simply incredible and his work is AMAZING. So, I got my haircut messed up by my former hair stylist I was looking around to see if I can get my messed up haircut fix and I stumbled to Umbrella Salon!!! This is my second time here. My first time was with Khoi, who did my highlights. He did a Fantastic job! Today, 3/22/2011, Roz, the hairstylist, fixed my ugly Victoria Beckham's haircut that was previously messed up by my former stylist and let me tell ya'll......Roz got some magical tricks with her hair cutting techniques! She gave me the haircut that I actually wanted done by my former hairstylist!! I am super happy and satisfied with my cut..THANK YOU SO MUCH ROZ!! read more

I like the online reservation which is easy to book or change an appointment. Great salon with friendly and well trained stylists. The price is higher than salons in the area, but you will not be disappointed by the quality of the service and a trendy hair style. You get what you pay for. However, the people who answer the phone could have a little more training in customer service. They seem snobbish and not willing to listen or help. For example, repeating "What is that?" multiple times to the customer on the other end of the phone seems unprofessional. Furthermore, if a requested stylist is not available, perhaps they can be a little more sympathetic or helpful by suggesting alternative time slot or service by another stylist. It seems they don't know their stylists other than names. read more

I am so happy with the haircut and friendly service that I got from Taylor. The haircut I had gotten previously elsewhere was so bad that I could not bring myself to wear my hair down. I needed a serious fix and after reading reviews, I decided to make an appointment with Taylor. She did not disappoint! From the beginning, she greeted me very warmly and listened to my hair horror story and what I wanted, and she made my hair look so much better without losing much of the length! I am very happy I found this place and thanks to Taylor for my awesome cut! The salon is very nice and spacious. The receptionist was very friendly too. read more

So happy with my experience at Umbrella! I made an appointment about 1 week before my actual appointment date without any difficulties. I requested Samantha from all the reviews that I had read and my sister requested Christopher. We got to the salon around 10 minutes before our appointment times. Unfortunately the first person who we met from Salon was incredibly rude. He was on the phone when we approached him but we hadn't seen the phone so we thought he was just turned away from the desk. So I politely asked if he could help us out and he was like "um excuse me, i'm on the phone" just sort of rudely. It was sort of off putting, but he was the ONLY one who was like that. Everyone else in this salon was adorable, so sweet, and so caring! My appointment with Samantha went perfectly. I have wanted lighter highlights for sometime now because my hair is naturally really dark brown. Finally after making up my mind to get the highlights, I went in to her and told her I wanted something that was noticeable but also natural looking. She gave me two options, one that was very close to my current hair color and another that was slightly lighter, but a nice brown tone as well. I went with the second one because I wanted there to be a noticeable change (if i'm paying $130, it better be clear what I changed!). The whole process took about 2.5 hours. She started with choosing the color, then applying the highlights. I assumed she would use foil like the other highlights I have seen but instead she asked me if it was okay if she used serran wrap because it apparently makes the highlights look less clumpy and more natural. I thought, sure, why not? I wish she had told me it was like $15 more expensive...but no big deal I probably should have asked myself before going with it. She then gave it a nice wash. The hair massage was absolutely amazing, I wanted to just lay there all day! Then she gave blow-dried it amazingly and explained how she was doing it so I could do it for work every morning without much trouble (of course you can't recreate what they do...) and went through each of the products she used. Through the whole process she was kind, answered all my questions, and so informative about all my hair issues! She was also really sweet and talked to me about my personal life as well which was nice that she could maintain such good conversation through the whole thing. Furthermore, she told me she could fix my bangs to give them more of a flow, which she did in minutes. I've wanted noticeable bangs for ages, and she made them look gorgeous! They are so easy to maintain and I love that she offered to do them without me even asking. Such a good eye. Finally at the end, the second thing that was slightly annoying was when I asked to see the product she had used (the oribe conditioner), she brought it out to show me and told me it was $50. Then, minutes later, the same man at the front gave me a bill for $186 dollars...I asked to see the itemized list and saw that he had automatically charged me for the conditioner (a good $50). I thought it was kind of rude that he did not even wait for my response but rather just put it on my bill. I asked him to take it off and he kindly gave me my new bill. So one star off basically for this guy. I don't remember his name unfortunately but his attitude overall during my experience there kinda sucked. But everyone else, 5 stars!! I have gotten tons of compliments on my new hair and I am so thankful I came here for my first highlighting experience! Worst experience eva! So I make a call to get an appointment. I get an appointment with some a person there. I go in like 5 mins before my appointment as I don't like to be in CP time. So I get there and I tell the receptionist that I am waiting for my haircut. So she says 'ok'... I wait and wait and then another person comes to the receptionist and they talk and then the receptionist comes up and says 'ooh, she's going to be late, if you want, you can go next door to get a coffee.." I was like "wtf" but I just told her "oh, i can wait"... so I waited like 20 minutes and she finally comes out and says 'lets get you ready and blah blah blah". The hair cut was not that great, kind of lopsided... I think she had a vision on how she wanted the hair to work, but good stylists know what works with what head type.. so she came up with this idea and it sounded good, but then when she was styling it, I got the impression that she didn't like it as she said "ooh it's surely different". Cons: expensive, no real customer service and not that great. read more

Update review, I still till this day have not been disappointed by Christian Ceja. I love the fact the he uses his razor to get the cutting edge on my hair. I do recommend him especially if you have difficult hair he's the guy to see. He works wonders read more

Karla is a wizard! I came in after abstaining from bleach for 6 months with massive roots, split ends everywhere, and a faded out red color that was once brown but the bleach bled through and made it orangey and still very damaged. I looked like a complete trainwreck and only added to the sloppiness by arriving 20 minutes late looking for parking I didn't even need because there's a garage right across the street! Derrrr. But back to the hair. Karla made sure that I knew that she might not be able to get ALL the red tones out in just one session and that she was concerned about doing anything too harsh because of the damaged state of my hair. That scored major points with me and made me trust her. I hate when stylists push you to do things to your hair that it simply cannot handle! I showed her some pictures and told her I wanted a warm, vibrant blonde balayage done that didn't look like the nasty dishwater-blonde highlighted look that my asshole friends knowingly let me rock in my early 20s. A midpoint between those aforementioned barely-noticable highlights and the fake bottle blonde look reminiscent of the amazing light, sunkissed blonde of my childhood. It's damn hard to get your hair back to where it was before you started fucking with it! [/first world problems.] So the balayage (bally-AHGE; I normally am good with foreign word pronunciation butchered this word an embarrassing number of times within the two hours I was there) was painted on fairly quickly, set (without heat, yay balayage!), was rinsed out and then Karla and her adorable assistant applied toner to all of my hair to get the orange out and lighten my natrual color a bit. They applied a mask to help with the state of my hair, took me back to the chair, and asked how I wanted my hair cut. Even though I knew the ends were cashed out I wanted to save as much length as I could but simultaneously make my straight, fine, wispy Irish girl hair look thicker if possible. She took off maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch maximum and lined up the V shape I had going on in the back to be cut straight across and blunt which definitely made it visually appear to be much, much thicker. When she asked if I wanted layers I told her that stylists are always cutting short layers on top to give me volume but that it backfires and makes it look thinner. She sympathized and promised to make them long, and she delivered! Now I have hair that is mostly the same length but with a few face-framing pieces that look great either straight or styled. I think my hair looks the best it has since I began dying it which is a miracle because I came into Umbrella a disaster! I highly recommend Kayla especially if you have hair similar to mine or are looking for a bright blonde color that still looks natural. Bayalage is associated with the infamous ombré trend that is on its way out but my hair is proof that you can use this technique successfully to get a more polished look without the purposefully gradient effect (unless you want to! Hey, I still like the ombré hair, just not this time). From the reviews on here I expected to pay $250-$300 for all the stuff I got done but I paid $200 + tip and I had a complete overhaul with Karla even throwing in the hair treatment for my dry hair for free. Most good hair places ain't cheap and it's worth it to me. For those on a budget or apprehensive about the price it's worth mentioning that balayage growout is very forgiving and you can go for much longer in between touch ups than traditional foil highlights or all-over color. read more

My stylist was sweet, and the salon was nice - but I left completely disappointed. I was asking for an icy, silvery lavender, I showed the stylist four different photos and my hair looks nothing like that. After bleaching and toning, she told me it was more ashy than lavender. I said I would be okay with that, I just wanted to make sure it was icy cool toned with no warmth. My hair has pieces that are cool, but it is still overall super warm blond. If she would have managed my expectations ahead of time I wouldn't have minded so much. I am frustrated that I clearly asked if we could achieve the look in that appointment, she said yes, and then after the final rinse she said that it will look how I want it after another appointment... she knew that I was disappointed (I told her) and she had nothing to offer. She did a poor job of cutting it. I asked for a lob, she said she didn't want to cut it because it will need another cut after it gets lightened. I said that I thought that's what we were doing today. She ended up giving me a sad trim. She was nice. I still tipped her, but I will not be coming back. Had she told me from the beginning - or even mid way, I wouldn't have been nearly so bummed walking out. I kept hoping it would get lighter - now I have blah hair that isn't terrible, but I am definitely not excited about and I paid $170.00. Very unfortunate as I had started the appointment telling her how excited I was and that I had been looking forward to today for a month now. Such a bummer. read more
