Finally, after some time having this place bookmarked, I managed to hit up this place today & gave it a try for lunch -- So here goes: FOOD: Souvlaki Stuffed Pita FTW! Juicy, luscious and tender pork meat stuffed in an awesome pita bread with killer white sauce, along with tomato and lettuce. Can't get enough! Combo platter with "the works" - Tasty grilled chicken and lamb sausage on top of yellow rice, topped with mixed white ans spicy sauce. 1/2 of this dish actually tasted great; but I think the sauce is a little on a heavy side. It definitely has a tangy side to it. Almost could not finish the remainder 1/2 of the platter. Would rather have the white sauce instead. All 2 dishes added up to $13. Reasonably priced, and portion is just about right...CASH ONLY LOCATION & BUSINESS HOURS: Conveniently located at Midtown near the E/ 6 train, it was pretty easy to spot this truck from afar. However, the only downer is that it is closed on nights and weekends! Wish they would at least open during evenings OR weekends..but hey, perhaps it'd be a good thing or else I'll always spending money eating here rather than eating home Final Verdict: One of my new favorite lunch places at Mid town. Also it is strange that the Greek salad came with balsamic dressing. Usually it comes with red wine vinegar and olive oil which compliment the salad much better. It's not the best chicken and rice in the area, but you gotta give them credit for putting a new (Greek) twist on a midtown lunch staple. For my first time here, I couldn't resist going with the Hercules (which comes with a meat over rice, salad, fries, and pita bread). At $12, it's a bit pricier than the other options, but the fries and upgraded salad were worth it.The chicken itself is a little on the dry side compared to Halal Guys or the nearby King of Falafel & Shawarma. The smaller shredded pieces are better, but the dryness definitely becomes apparent in the larger chunks of chicken. There was an accidental piece of pork souvlaki dropped into my box and it was much better than the chicken - very flavorful/well seasoned and not dry at all, so I would definitely come back for that next time. The tzatziki sauce is fairly thick, and doesn't appear to be seasoned enough. It tasted only vaguely of yogurt, with barely any cucumber flavor and no hint of fresh herbs. I tried to use the sauce to compensate for the dryness of the chicken, but it's not easy when the sauce is so thick. (Maybe I'm just used to the white sauce at halal carts - although I'm trying not to compare them too closely as I know this is Greek) The hot sauce tastes just like Asian chili garlic sauce (like Sriracha's "cousin"), which I found to be an odd pairing. The rice itself is lightly flavored - probably more flavorful than the oily variation at Halal Guys, but less so than King of Falafel & Shawarma or Mysttik Masaala. The fries are pretty great - they're incredibly crispy and appear to have been twice fried. The salad is Greek-style, with romaine lettuce, feta cheese, tomatoes, onions, and olives. It's downright luxurious compared to the "salad" (aka iceberg lettuce and tomatoes) that halal carts serve up. The pita bread was ok, but could have been softer. Overall, it seems like the sides (fries and salad) outshine the mains here (or at least the chicken). The portions are pretty large, and the Hercules could probably comfortably fill two people (or uncomfortably fill one!). The line looks long around the lunch rush, but it moves pretty quickly. I don't think I'll be back for the chicken, but I would come back for some more of that souvlaki. read more

First food truck visit ever -- got over my food truck fear -- and it was fine. Portion- pretty good for 7 bucks. Keep in mind, I ordered and then took an hour to get home with it and heated it up. Do not be fooled, this street meat truck is vegetarian friendly and absolutely delicious! I picked up a Veggie Greek Salad which was packed with salad mix, olives, feta, grape leaves, tomatoes, cucumbers, black beans, green peppers & onions and last but definitely not the least ZUCCHINI BALLS! The zucchini balls were crispy on the outside and deliciously soft on the inside. I opted for the tzatziki and spicy hot sauce to round out the flavors. I'm trying to understand the hype but I can't seem to get it. I went a few weeks ago and there was no line (yay) because it was well past the lunch hour. I ordered the chicken pita sandwich, and it was mushy but not memorable. My heart was not singing, and I kept wondering what was so great about it. It's true there is nothing bad about this place, because it's cheap for lunch and really filling, but other than that I do not think this is my go-to "mouth-watering" lunch delight. Been wanting to try this place for awhile. I ordered the platter with chicken, feta and tzatziki, as well as a side of pita. The portion was HUGE, for $11 it's definitely a good buy, and I myself could make two meals out of it. I don't do NYC street food. The occasional pretzel or knishe is as far as I go. Halal has been iffy, hotdogs are scary, street meat is Russian roulette, so far as my GI track is concerned. Those sugar peanuts are good for 2 or 3, then you throw away the bag. So I was really surprised when I Yelped midtown for a food suggestion. There were a couple restaurants, but this was the closest. Then I saw it was a truck. Then I saw the truck across Park Ave. WTH, thought I. Lots of Yelp reviews and still a high star rating. Hard to beat. There was no line (something that hasn't happened in my subsequent visits) and I ordered the big portion of white breast chicken over fries, Greek salad, and rice. Brought it back to my office in the Helmsley Building a couple blocks away. Yum. Did I say that yet? Yum. Really good. Good price, big portions, extra sauce like I asked for, all good. Really yum. Of course Uncle Gussy's isn't new - their truck is somewhat shiny - but as an entity they've been doing their thing at 51st and Park for a hot minute and lines have been forming around lunch for many, many moons. And if the combo Greek salad is any indicator of what all of their other dishes taste like, their success makes a lot of sense. After hearing all the hype about Uncle G's while costume-shopping at Ricky's (productive lunch hours, FTW!), I trudged on over to give it a go. Maybe it was an off day, but I have to say I was a little underwhelmed. Three stars docked, each for three different (albeit semi-related) reasons: 1. I ordered a Soulvaki rice platter with the works... and got the wrong meat 2. I asked (and paid for) pita on the side... but didn't get any 3. General disappointment that Uncle Gussy's didn't meet the expectations set for me by others. On the plus side, Yelpers weren't lying about the lightning-quick service. Uncle Gussy's is a well-oiled machine, and the efficiency of the guys in the truck amaze me! While I don't doubt that it has every potential to be a strong contender in the street meat truck competition, it will have to take a second trip (and an updated review) to prove my initial 2-star rating wrong. What's with the new packaging? Your old logo is gone. For a minute there I thought this truck was under new management. It feels like you discarded your old branding which was really working for you! I for one was used to love the "shorthand" of ordering. Also, why did all of the prices go up? I really miss your old pricing! I used to look forward to a cheap lunch at your truck because this area has a real shortage of cheap lunch options. The portions are also smaller now, I think. My tiny Chicken/Lamb Pita sandwich was 8 bucks! I'm really disappointed, Uncle Gussy! Why did you change your menu so much? It is now a bit confusing! I asked your crew if they still served lamb because it is not obvious anymore. He said they now mix beef into it. Is that true? I've passed by here so many times right in front of the Park Avenue church and always avoided it because the line is super long. But that must mean that it's great, right? The trick to Uncle Gussy's is getting there by 11:30-11:45am. Once you're there, it means you'll probably only wait like 5 minutes before you get your food. Yes, only five minutes! They are so quick and they get your order to you within a minute. I had their veggie platter without feta cheese- which was only $6! That meant saffron rice, grilled onions, black beans in a hearty sauce, and some lettuce and tomato with some balsamic. I thought there would be more veggies, but it is really like 75% rice and beans and 25% 'salad'. The carbs and protein are good though, so appreciate that! I've been here almost everyday this week since I got a whiff of my co-worker's lamb platter earlier this week. I've had the souvlaki platter---very little meat though but delicious. And the lamb gyro platter--full of meat! They must have ample supply of lamb. The tzatziki sauce is on point---creamy and full-flavored. But what I love most about Uncle Gussy: each of my platters have each been $7! And considering I only have $60 left in my bank account and pay day isn't until next week, that's damn wonderful. Fail blog of a Real Time Lunch Review....... Been working by this place for a hot minute....and have wanted to try....but the prices are much higher than I used to get at NYC's most famous cart near my old office (walking distance)....and the award-winning cart around the corner from my apt...both with nearly the same food options. I get it, since they have a lock in the area for those who aren't willing to walk a few blocks. But I still waited until I had a discount code to take off some of the sting. Ordered pick up for lamb & pork souvlaki combo...plan to pick up some tzatziki at the cart. BRB! And I'm back!....empty-handed. They accepted my order (which clearly had a discount code I would lose attached to it), even though they were out of a main component. While the guy in charge seemed cool and nice...and did offer to compensate with two completely different items...it just left a bad taste in my mouth that they didn't have someone call to give me the option or heads up before I hauled over. Guess this is what I get for ordering from a food truck on Seamless. I was looking forward to at least being a semi-regular and giving word of mouth business to this new cart.....but this experience, plus being able to get the same stuff cheaper elsewhere, isn't gonna make it likely. I had been running into Uncle Gussy's in Astoria around 6:30 in the morning on a regular basis. Then I found out these guys are actually stationed in midtown, 5 blocks from my work. So I just had to ask : Me: Yo what's the deal with you guys parking on the corner of Broadway and 31st st. in Astoria every morning? UG: We stop by the bakery for coffee and donuts every morning. You seen us there? Me: Yeah.. like almost every day bro. Smiles all around.. we are already best of friends... the only thing left is a hug which is hard to pull off as they are inside a truck. Oh well, hugs will have to wait. I make do with the pork souvlaki sandwich instead. For $6, you can't go too wrong with this. It's saucy and spicy and the flavors are good. Their tzatziki sauce definitely gives their food more character. They ran out of lettuce but that's hardly anything I would ever complain about. I mean who cares right? It's friggin lettuce!
