I ordered the salmon, true to the menu it did have a honey chipotle sauce on top, but the salmon basically smothered in it and it seemed like an effort to cover up the quality of the fish, or the quality how it was cooked, which was awful. Chips and salsa came with the meal as expected, salsa was just like Chevys which would also have been a better dinner. We visited around 6 pm on a Sunday, we were hoping to sit on the patio, but it was closed, maybe due to staffing shortages, but the restaurant was also empty the whole time we were there. Gigantic and colossal disappointment. I had attended a happy hour a couple weeks before...at that time I loved the atmosphere; great drinks, chips and guacamole were solid. So jumped at a chance to take the family, 8 of us, to what I thought would be a fun lunch over the Easter weekend. Nope. Service was top notch, a bit slow, but they had indicated everything is cooked from scratch so assumed the food would be worth the wait. Nope. The chicken enchilada was dry as a bone...think crockpot chicken folded into a tortilla and then steamed. The taco, only the meat...they forgot the cheese and tomatoes so had to bring out separately? Some of our tribe had the fajita's & they indicated they were "pretty good"....so perhaps that is the way to go...but based upon the price, might as well head to Chevy's in Olivette. The chicken bowl...Chipotle is better. In a nutshell...such a bummer. The first time I went here I had pretty high expectations considering I had heard about this place being amazing from other locations. From my understanding this is the only location in the St. Louis area and got rave reviews. This however will not be one of them. I went here around summer time and after checking out lifetime across the street me and my friend grabbed lunch here. There was a storm that just started and the power went out. I'm not solely basing my first experience there on that, I get it, things happen. I ordered the taco salad and munched on some chips and salad before it came out. I have to say, the chips were not good. They have this after taste that just doesn't sit well with me. The salsa however covered that, so be sure to drench your chips in salsa. When the taco salad came out, it was HUGE. I could not finish it and even though I took the majority of it home, I didn't finish it. It was very bland and there was no room from recovery from that. The second visit! It was a birthday dinner not of my choosing so I went to celebrate her. Her boyfriend had made reservations for 8pm, but we had to wait at the bar due to some miscommunication. We sat down and the bartender was RUDE. A friend ordered a drink and assumed he wanted 3 because my boyfriend and I were beside the friend, immediately went over to the other side of our party, and was rude to them as well. He didn't even ask us if we wanted anything and were charged for the drinks we didn't order. Not only this, but the place was DIRTY. I get that they were probably understaffed, Covid, all the excuses, but no, I saw 3-4 of them making jokes while making drinks. There were probably 3 tables that needed busting and the bar definitely needed some wiping down. Our table was ready by 8:30pm and it was an overflow table in the middle of the hallway. Me and friend were worried that someone was going to run into us and spill food, luckily that didn't happen. The manager (I assume) came out to tell us how sorry he was about the reservation mix up and gave us queso on the house. It was a very nice gesture and one we all appreciated because the queso was *chef's kiss* The waiter we had made up for everything! He was very nice, attentive, and joked with us. I ordered the chicken tortilla bowl which is listed as one of their most popular menu items and I know why!!! AMAZING. I wasn't able to finish it because again, large portions! I'm not complaining though because it's an extension of a good meal. All in all, it's about the company you keep and we had a good time. Me and friend wished they would've closed the second doors in the entrance so we wouldn't have had to shiver throughout the night. We also saw the manager talk to that bartender that was rude. When you walk into Uncle Julio's you are transported to a classy Tex Mex establishment with dim lighting and a bustling atmosphere but not too crowded. We had reservations for the 6 pm which on the website gave us 2 and half hours to dine. Unfortunately of waitress seemed to be in a hurry to rush us out. It got so uncomfortable I just ordered anything on the menu. I got the veggie fajitas, a first and it was ok. A really healthy option. I also got the guacamole on the side with the house chips and it was a great choice. For drinks I had the strawberry margarita, it had fresh strawberries and was delicious. My family and I went to stop into Uncle Julio's tonight- how horrible. Wish we would have just skipped it and went somewhere different. Our service was awful- taking 30 minutes to get drinks out to us, many of our food/ drink items never came although we asked multiple times, and just a simple lack of urgency. The manager was HORRIBLE. Asked for help multiple times and he would look at us and completely ignore us, but when a larger birthday party came in, he was at their beckon call. What happened to Uncle Julio's? It used to be one of our go-to's but I've officially made the decision to never return. It seems like since they took vegetable tamales off the menu years ago they've consistently gone downhill (Orlando, FL, Orland Park, IL and now Missouri)....just horrible. This location specifically had awful service and even worst food. Went for a seat at the bar and it took a while for the bartender to clean off the area. We weren't offered chips with salsa, that used to be standard. The bartender seemed out of sorts and overworked. Our food came out fairly quickly yet cold as if it was prepared earlier in the day. My friend ordered table side guac and I guess the bartender forgot to put in the order because it never came out. She had to ask about it AFTER we finished eating our entrees and then someone came....she said even the guacamole lacked flavor (& she used to love guac from Uncle Julio's). We had a reservation for nine at 2 pm. We were seated right away and given salsa and chips right away. Everything good so far. It took about 10 minutes for the waitress to come over and take our drink order and at least another ten to get our drinks. Not really sure when she took our order for food but about 15-20 mins later our water glasses and drink glasses are empty. We did not get food until we had been there an hour and 15 minutes. And when it came everybody but 3 people got their food. 2 of the 3 then got their food 5 minutes later. My wife still did not have her salad. My mother did not get the beans she selected which were suppose to come with the dish. Another guest did not get a drink which was ordered. Just bad service all around. It was a shame since the food and ambience were good! Unfortunately we had to pay 18% gratuity because of the large party, even though we did not think it was worth it. Yikes, where do I begin? Yes, it's Tex-Mex and not Mexican but my rule of thumb that the food quality and authenticity is inversely related to the quality of the building was 100% spot on here. It's a beautiful, expensive , nicely decorated free-standing building in a wealthy part of town. So it stands to reason the food wouldn't be great. And it wasn't. Two stars is generous and only because one of our party kind of liked their food so I want to be fair (this person also loves Applebee's so I'm being MORE than fair). Service was absolutely terrible. We sat at the bar and the bartenders / wait staff spent more time jaw jacking than muddling (nice touch but your drinks are way overpriced for way too much lime juice and cheap tequila). Ended up ordering neat tequila after the first drink so I knew what I was getting. I swore that they forgot to put our order in but good news! It was just incompetence on the kitchen's part. It wasn't that busy. The couple sitting next to us asked to close their bill and cancel their food right when their food came out (an hour + later). Seriously, it's tortillas and beans and other simple stuff. Sometimes you go for Mexican food and it arrives before you have time to put the napkin in your lap. I still have burns on my hands from touching the plate that surely sat under a heat lamp for 20 minutes. Enchiladas and rice were almost inedible and I barely ate 1/4 of them. We've been three times and every visit has met our food expectations and even exceeded them. A friend of mine who has eaten here in another city endorsed this place, so had to check it out. Dined on a Sunday evening with reservation just in case. The design of the restaurant is awesome. Fire pit section outside and huge dining space, very friendly for covid spacing. Bar area is extravagant. Started off with the Tres Amigos Margarita and Wow, this was really good, definitely a strong and enjoyable libation. As my meal I opted for Combination Enchiladas, 1 beef 1 chicken, with rice and beans. Order the Fajita Salad for an additional $1.99 to get pico/guac/sour cream as the entree doesn't come with this. The enchiladas had great seasoning and flavors, perfect temperature. Beans were cooked perfectly. I wasn't a fan of the rice as the flavor didn't grab me. Service was just OK, our server disappeared for alot of time at one point and never asked if we needed refills on our water. Overall, I would return again even if just for drinks. read more

My husband and I came here because we heard the El Jefe was a must try. Read the reviews and it's split good and bad but I knew I had to try this margarita so we came. We came later in the evening so we got seated rather quickly. The server was amazing, fun, attentive and was able to read his guest (knowing when we need something before trying to call his attention and not hovering). I like the chips how they were thin and warm. The salsa was a little spicy and really good. My shredded chicken enchilada was great and their salsa verde was good. I didn't care for the ground beef enchilada but it wasn't terrible. If we come back, I'll stick to chicken. My husband ate fajitas and he said it was fine. This place is a good addition to St. Louis/Frontenac. It's nice to have an "upscale" Mexican restaurant rather than going to our usual fast/casual Mexican. We made a reservation and got seated right away upon arriving on a Saturday night. PROS: The atmosphere is beautiful and inviting, big booths and dimly lit this was a nice place for dinner. The guacamole is outstanding, we ordered the made-to-order so I can leave out the cilantro. I could've eaten the whole bowl myself. My boyfriend ordered the steak and chicken fajitas, I got the enchiladas. The guacamole, fajitas and enchiladas are definitely worth coming back for. We were quite pleased with the food. Service was great. Our waitress was attentive, but also had a couple of other servers check on us and one brought water when she saw we were low. CONS: I would completely pass on the churros. They were absolutely terrible and not what we expected. They came out cold, greasy, and tasted like flavorless cardboard. Most churros I've had are covered in cinnamon and sugar, but these were very underwhelming. Without the dipping sauce they wouldn't have been sweet enough to be considered a dessert. Personally, I wasn't a huge fan of the beans and rice (I like more traditional frijoles), but overall the food was great. My boyfriend liked both of these so that could just be my taste. The beans tasted very BBQ-y. Another potential "con" would be you have to make a reservation weeks in advance if you plan to have dinner here on a weekend. Not a deal breaker, but it may keep you from coming in if you have to wait for quite awhile without a reservation. The pros definitely outweigh the cons and we look forward to coming back! read more

The food was decent if slightly overpriced. They had good variety and good flavor. The Restaurant wasn't half full when we were there. We had 8 adults and two toddlers, and we showed up at 4 PM to avoid the crowds. Our reservation was specific and we included the chocolate piñata as our expectation because we were celebrating birthdays. It took almost 3 hours for us to have dinner because the service was so slow. Our table was not cleared off at all even when dessert arrived. Between finishing eating and our dessert arriving it was almost an hour. We ordered one appetizer and several drinks meals - straight off the menu - and our desserts were ordered promptly as we were finishing eating. My coffee took over half an hour and showed up incorrectly. Finally 2.5 hrs later, our waitress knew we were waiting on our check and yet proceeded to stand across the room and take a table full of orders. The dining room we were in only had people at three of the tables otherwise was empty. We never saw a manager and I did give some feedback to the hostess. Our check was over $400 and I am usually a very generous tipper, but I did ratchet it down slightly. Note that they have a sign at the door informing you that they no longer take American Express, but the waitress didn't inform this of us when she dropped off the bill. Struggling with the machine, we spent another 10 minutes trying to figure out how to get the electronic payment to go through until she finally spoke to us. Absolutely terrible. My family made a reservation for 7 people on a Friday night. We check in on-time for our reservation. 30 minutes later, we are still waiting for our table. When we went up (one time) to check on the status of our table, the hostess was rude and told us they don't have tables ready for a party of 7 and we would likely be waiting another 45 minutes. What is the point of having a reservation? We then asked about separating our party into two tables. The hostess, again, was rude and dismissive. When we finally got a table, we sat there for 25 minutes....no one came to us. No water, no chips, no service; just attitude and disorganization . We left and will never return. read more

Been wanting to try this place. Was in the area so we stopped for dinner. We were able to grab a reservations. couple hours before and the process was seamless. We showed up about 30 min earlier than our reservation and thought we could just catch a drink if we couldn't be seated. We walked in and was greeted with smiles and we were pleasantly seated very quickly. We chose the table-side guacamole as an appetizer. We had to wait about 30 minutes (after we ordered it) for the service to arrive. The experience was pleasant and the guacamole was very good. Just wish an expectation was set on timing. The food was very good. Beef enchiladas and fajitas was the order. The food came at a reasonable time. However, the fajitas were brought to the table without tortilla shells. After looking around and asking several folks for the tortilla shells (so we could eat the....fajitas) we finally received them about 25 minutes AFTER the food was brought. By this time the food was getting cold and I'm afraid the overall experience was impacted. May be back to try again. Not sure. read more

Uncle Julio's does not seem to want to welcome large parties for happy hour. We reserved two tables in the back room ahead of time, even called a few times to confirm or change our number of guests from 20 to 24. When we arrived, we were told separate tickets were not available. We had three bills - one for food (appetizers, etc.), a drink bill for one table, and a drink bill for another table. Two kind souls from our group volunteered to pay for the drink bills and we had to figure out which person's bill our drinks were on. The waitress and rude host informed us about the bill situation as we were seated and reminded us we have been informed about it when reserving (which was not true). The appetizers were great, the drinks were great, and the atmosphere was clean and inviting. However, they are just not interested in serving large groups...after they found out no one was ordering entrees, our service declined tremendously. But, nonetheless, there are plenty of alternative happy hour locations ready to serve our work friends! Note: the restaurant was not busy and there were more empty tables than seated tables, so we were not encroaching on their ability to serve more parties...
