This is the first location for Uncle Julio's in Missouri, but I grew up in Texas and this place is my absolute favorite Tex-Mex restaurant! I'm salivating now just thinking about their fajitas! Their steak fajitas are the best. For those that prefer chicken, the chicken fajitas have a smoked flavor. Also, their homemade salsa is made with a smoky flavor. They homemake their flour tortillas to perfection. They also make great cocktails and margaritas. There is both white and yellow queso on the menu and I like both; the white is a newer addition. The only cons are the prices are a little high. And the fact that the tortillas cool quickly so when ordering to go the get cold quickly and the corn tortillas don't reheat well. read more

We had a reservation for nine at 2 pm. We were seated right away and given salsa and chips right away. Everything good so far. It took about 10 minutes for the waitress to come over and take our drink order and at least another ten to get our drinks. Not really sure when she took our order for food but about 15-20 mins later our water glasses and drink glasses are empty. We did not get food until we had been there an hour and 15 minutes. And when it came everybody but 3 people got their food. 2 of the 3 then got their food 5 minutes later. My wife still did not have her salad. My mother did not get the beans she selected which were suppose to come with the dish. Another guest did not get a drink which was ordered. Just bad service all around. It was a shame since the food and ambience were good! Unfortunately we had to pay 18% gratuity because of the large party, even though we did not think it was worth it. We went last night for my daughter's 18th bday. Let me preface this that we had a large party of 19 people. I made a reservation, called to confirm and had to increase the number from the original 15, no problem mentioned. We get there and there wasn't enough chairs, but there was room for another table. We asked about moving one over, we were told no. There were a few 2 top booths that we asked if we could pull tables from and they agreed. Over half of our party had gotten there before me and already placed drink orders, however, it took another 15 minutes for them to be brought out. I ordered the steak and hi Jen fajitas...they were good, but a small portion for the price. One 4-5 slices of steak and chicken, a few peppers but lots of onion. The tortillas were great! Delicious and if I could buy a bag to bring home I would. The whole reason i wanted to bring her here was for dessert...the chocolate piñata. It definitely was a unique treat and loved by all. I don't know if it's worth 33.00, but it was good. Everyone seemed to like their food, but the time was ridiculous. Our waitress had other tables, no one was helping her and the kitchen was obviously very slow and running behind. From our 6:30 reservation we didn't leave until almost 10pm. I went here in March about a week after they opened and loved it. I recently visited and was super scared after reading all the reviews that were negative. Pros: food is great, margaritas are great, and no problem with the reservations we made Cons: the service was a little slow at first and got extremely better the longer we were there. I think the server was just overwhelmed. We received chips and salsa and queso before we had any napkins or silverware. It was kind of messy. We asked for napkins a couple of times before we got them. We also sat in a side room. It was great until it got packed. Then it was so hard to hear. You couldn't even hear the person sitting next to you. After it was packed too, I noticed 90% of the patrons were female. West county money up in the house for sure. I would go back for sure. It's more expensive than your average Mexican, but not by that much and it is soooooo much better. I will just have to go during off hours so it isn't sooooo loud. read more

When Uncle Julio's arrived on scene it was a game-changer. Fresh high quality TexMex, served promptly, in a high end space. Fast forward to 2022, and UJ's has gone the way of other restaurants: a shell of its former self. Service has fallen off the cliff. Kitchen staff takes ages to prepare food, while the bar service has truly imploded. None of their famous drinks taste the way they're supposed to anymore. The local residents only tolerate this sort of nose dive for so long... I hope the powers-that-be at the corporate level come through and do a top to bottom reboot because whomever is running the show nowadays clearly doesn't give a damn anymore. read more

What a trainwreck. We had a 530 reservation, and got seated around 600 after prodding the hostess several times. My wife's dish came out 15 minutes before the rest of our meals. My enchiladas had some horrible rancid taste, and was inedible. I told the waitress (the only saving grace for this place), and she was sorry?? We had 8 adults and two toddlers, and we showed up at 4 PM to avoid the crowds. Our reservation was specific and we included the chocolate piñata as our expectation because we were celebrating birthdays. It took almost 3 hours for us to have dinner because the service was so slow. Our table was not cleared off at all even when dessert arrived. Between finishing eating and our dessert arriving it was almost an hour. We ordered one appetizer and several drinks meals - straight off the menu - and our desserts were ordered promptly as we were finishing eating. My coffee took over half an hour and showed up incorrectly. Finally 2.5 hrs later, our waitress knew we were waiting on our check and yet proceeded to stand across the room and take a table full of orders. The dining room we were in only had people at three of the tables otherwise was empty. We never saw a manager and I did give some feedback to the hostess. Our check was over $400 and I am usually a very generous tipper, but I did ratchet it down slightly. Note that they have a sign at the door informing you that they no longer take American Express, but the waitress didn't inform this of us when she dropped off the bill. Struggling with the machine, we spent another 10 minutes trying to figure out how to get the electronic payment to go through until she finally spoke to us. Uncle Julio's does not seem to want to welcome large parties for happy hour. We reserved two tables in the back room ahead of time, even called a few times to confirm or change our number of guests from 20 to 24. When we arrived, we were told separate tickets were not available. We had three bills - one for food (appetizers, etc.), a drink bill for one table, and a drink bill for another table. Two kind souls from our group volunteered to pay for the drink bills and we had to figure out which person's bill our drinks were on. The waitress and rude host informed us about the bill situation as we were seated and reminded us we have been informed about it when reserving (which was not true). The appetizers were great, the drinks were great, and the atmosphere was clean and inviting. However, they are just not interested in serving large groups...after they found out no one was ordering entrees, our service declined tremendously. But, nonetheless, there are plenty of alternative happy hour locations ready to serve our work friends! For the food, we got a couple of the bowls, and they were all just ok. I got the steak fajita bowl and it was just very average. I hate to leave such a bad review but this place is a dumpster fire freak show. This has to be the worst dining experience I have had ever. First off we had a reservation for four on a Friday night and had to wait close to 40 minutes to be seated. When we got to the table there were not any setups for silver ware on the table. It took the waiter 15 minutes or longer to even notice that we were seated in his section. I felt truly bad for the guy because the place was busy and the rest of the staff seemed apathetic about their jobs. Once we were greeted we were given chips and salsa and took our drink orders. The salsa was soupy and hard to scoop. We ordered a small guac and it looked like two small table spoon fulls of guac for $9. A total rip off. It took nearly 20 mins for our drinks to make it to the table after ordering them and the server apologized because they were so busy, which we understood... however my wife's drink was wrong and we didn't want to wait for it to be fixed so we didn't say anything about it. We all ordered our food and waited nearly an hour for it and when the food made it to the table we didn't get tortillas for the fajitas we ordered. Why would you even bring fajitas out without tortillas? The table next to us overheard our conversation and said the same thing happened to them as well. We asked for silverware again and the waiter said they were all out and that he had to go roll silverware and would bring them right over, meanwhile our food is getting cold, so we just asked for spoons to make our tortillas once we got them... This place is absolutely disgusting. There was queso sauce on my son's water cup, the spoons looked dingy at best, and the floors were sticky and covered in chocolate and and other stuff. Don't let the cheap light fixtures and fresh paint fool you, this place is falling apart. Oh yea and when we asked for straws they said they were out!! Isn't this a basic necessity for a restaurant? The food was okay, I really did enjoy the carnitas, but my sons steak was so overcooked he threw most of it away, which cost $28. In a nutshell, seriously underwhelming. The service was ok, I saw a few negative reviews about service and wait times, but that all was fairly good for us. Entirely efficient and attentive and without undue wait time. But with our visit the real issue in my opinion is the food. I suppose its on a par with someplace like Applebees or TGIFs or some chain like that. The food is really terrible in that special over processed corporate way that an O'Charleys or a Cheesecake Factory would be. While we were leaving, there was a produce delivery in progress delivering almost entirely nothing but ingredients for guacamole and strawberries for cocktails and strawberry lemonade. I'm convinced thats the only thing that's really "cooked" at Uncle Julios are these two things. I'd highly recommend skipping this place entirely and with prejudice, and scooting down to Manchester and eating at El Indio or Nachomamas. read more

This is my second time to this restaurant and this time the silverware and water bottle were very dirty. It appears as though the dishwasher is not working though when I asked for a new water bottle (because there was stuff floating in it) the server brought the bottle pictured here. It also had stuff floating in it, but he assured us in a very short way that it was clean. It was not. Also the silverware was gross. We had to wipe it off before using. We had a good time lunch today here at Uncle Julios. We were greeted at the entrance and quickly seated at a large corner table in the main dining room. Our waiter was extremely attentive and friendly throughly the lunch service. Even though the place was filled with guests, we were provided water and our drink order was taken immediately. Several of us had been here before and felt that the service and menu items had improved 100%. Contrary to other reviews, we found our selections to be very tasty, and served in an appropriate and gracious manner. Appetizers came quickly and each of our entrees arrived in 10 minutes. Little did I know whenever that came the food came and then finally the guacamole (I know), my brother didn't care for the drink it was too spicy for him and I forgot he can't tolerate spicy things(I drank mine). My mother is not a drinker but I had her get one for the birthday and asked for mango passion lemonade and never received it so she was drinking the water and strawberry margarita. I had to ask if the waiter could get some of the items as the table was so crowded with cups and things that I assumed they would pick up if you are no longer using. I assumed that I was thinking wrong so I looked around and others had their items cleared off. So he gathered two empty drink cups and a plate. Never picked anything up. I placed everyone's menus at the end corner table and that was never picked up. So odd Everyone had the same item the shrimp and steak fajitas. I had the vegetarian quesadilla. I had one full bite as it was an option for appetizer and another half. The breading was so soft. I wasn't a fan so that was the end for my meal.I continued to snack on the queso and guacamole which was not bad at all. Someone flagged for to- go boxes which I didn't want mine anymore but it was so odd as most even 1star restaurants would mention happy birthday or something personable just connecting with others such as " hope your birthday will be enjoyable". Uncle Julio's has arrived in St. Louis, and folx are super excited. This higher-end Mexican restaurant that recently opened in the parking lot of the Frontenac Lifetime Fitness has been packed seemingly every night since opening their doors. I recently had the opportunity to grab dinner with some gal pals at Uncle Julio's and we were all underwhelmed by the experience. We had a reservation made for us, which was a solid check in the plus column as there was a nearly two hour wait to get a table when we were being seated. Our table was situated by a busy servers' stand which kind of sucked. Would assume a reservation would warrant a slightly less high traffic area. It was complete chaos as servers whipped around the corner to get to other guests. We started off with a round of margaritas, and the server let us know (several times) that the bar was very short staffed which meant there would be quite a wait for drinks. So as soon as our drinks came we ordered another round. That was definitely a good idea because we finished our drinks well before they brought us our next round of margaritas. There was a snafu with our queso order. It never came. We waited and waited but never got it. When I finally brought it up, our server said the manager wanted to personally bring it out to us as soon as possible. Ok so this was a bit of a weird experience. Typically in my mind when a manager is going to be bringing out a missed or messed up item, they are most likely going to give some sort of feigned apology, offer to take it of the check, some sort of acknowledgement that there was an error on their part. But, that wasn't the case. A woman whom I assumed was the manager brought us a bowl of queso, set it on the table without saying a word and left. My friends and I all thought it was such odd customer service to make a note that a manager would be coming over, and there was no sort of interaction with said manager. Not that we needed/wanted an excuse for the lack of queso. Just thought there would be something said! The food from Uncle Julio's is what you'd expect. Wannabe fancy fare. I ordered a fajita that came with steak, chicken and bacon wrapped shrimp. The plate was sizzling and my mouth was watering at the Instagram worthy plate. However, the taste did not live up to the hype. The shrimp was good, but throw bacon on something and you don't have to do much else. The steak was fine. Steak is steak. But the chicken. What a miss. There was zero flavor. And what's worse was the texture of the chicken. It tasted like it was super processed chicken that had been frozen and boiled before being put on my plate. I ate one piece of it and my stomach was so turned by the texture that I didn't eat any more. Had the decision of where to eat been up to me, I probably wouldn't have picked Uncle Julio's. I LOVE authentic Mexican food, and so does my husband (who is Mexican), but this place misses the mark big time. I love spicy food, so I ordered the Camarones Diablos (spicy shrimp). The waitress assured me that it was spicy. The dish came out, and it was incredibly bland, and not spicy at all. Not even a teeny tiny bit. I compare this place to a nicer, more expensive Chevy's (the Applebee's of Mexican restaurants). They're definitely catering to a very specific crowd -- a crowd that can't handle spice or flavor, a crowd that doesn't mind overpaying for simple, incredibly basic food, and probably a crowd that considers downtown to be "dangerous." Right down the street from the Plaza Frontenac mall, this location of Uncle Julio's is the perfect place to slake one's thirst with an icy margarita after a day of shopping. This was my first ever visit to an Uncle Julio's restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality--definitely a cut above the usual tex-mex chain fare. The colorful painted mural on the front of the building put me in a festive mood to celebrate taco Tuesday. For happy hour, the margaritas ($5) are the star of the show. Complimentary chips and salsa were provided to the table right away. The tortilla chips are thin, cantina-style, and individual containers of salsa are provided for each patron. The bacon-wrapped habanero shrimp appetizer is a must-try. The shrimp fajitas are fresh and well spiced. The fajitas come with fresh tortillas, rice and beans, and accompaniments--pico de gallo, sour cream, guacamole, and shredded cheese. Portions are generous and ingredients are high quality. The service was pleasant and prompt, and I was happy to have an actual printed menu to consult and not the online QR code menus that seem to have cropped up like weeds. Enjoyed a girls' lunch out for my friend's birthday and we had such an amazing experience! Our waiter Angelo was incredibly knowledgeable and gracious throughout the entire experience. Prime location in Frontenac, well-built and impressive-looking on the outside. The fun stops there. Overly-loud Mexican music. Understaffed. Food arrives but the tortillas and sides are late, meaning you'll sit there chomping on chips while you're food is getting cold. Chicken fajitas were overly salty. Close your eyes and you'll swear you were at Chili's. The one at the airport. Wanted to try the quesadillas but they apparently are "pre-made" so I couldn't get it without onions. For an "authentic" Mexican restaurant, you're better off at Salina's in Chesterfield. I will say this: the Diet Coke was well-mixed and fully carbonated. read more

It's Cinco de Mayo, so I decided to give this place a try. I don't think they were expecting a crowd (don't know why, it's Cinco de Mayo) and there was a line out the door for at least a few hours. The bar stayed packed, so we had to get on the waitlist. We were told it was going to be an hour, but it was only a half hour. The staff was sweet, but seemed overwhelmed. The food was well seasoned, but we got the nachos and I think they may have run out of chips 'cause the toppings were on taco shells that were broken in half...but maybe that was on purpose? I guess it was more than slammed because of the holiday, but I asked for a straw for my drink because it was overflowing, and I also had a shot on top, so...my straw finally came out with my food, which was disappointing. My friend and I split the nachos, and we didn't get any side plates, so stuff was spilling all over the table. We did have to request some, which we got...very small ones. The table next to us was complaining because they got fajitas without any tortillas, and it took them forever to get a couple shots.
