Uncle Julio's is what I can easily classify as an upscale Mexican restaurant. All the usual occurrences of your typical run-of-the-mill Mexican eatery are present and accounted for: chips to start the meal, typical menu options, lots of margarita options; only wrapped up in a "fine dining" appearance and ambiance. I'm talking cloth napkins, table-side guacamole preparation, and high-quality food. We stopped in for lunch on a Saturday and were pleasantly surprised that the place was rather vacant. Assuming the weather was keeping people holed up at home or the pool (it was oppressively hot that day) we happily were lead to our table near the kitchen. After exchanging with the pleasantries we ordered a round of beverages followed shortly by our meals. I was the only one to go with a margarita and it was very well made and tasty. Our food choices ranged from tacos to fajitas. In fact, I had the Guadalajara (the combo fajita platter) and it was outstanding; the Mexican butter... it'll change your life (short term b/c it is heaven for your taste buds and long term b/c it probably immediately begins to clog your arteries). I was here recently with my mom for dinner. In my opinion, it's nothing special and I'm unlikely to return unless I'm craving some tableside guac. When I arrived I had no trouble getting a table - it was slightly busy. I was a little bit disappointed by their menu - it's relatively small and they didn't have my mom's favorite: chimichangas. I got the Guadalajara: steak and chicken fajitas with 4 bacon-wrapped stuffed shrimp on the side. The shrimp were really good. The meat for the fajitas was pretty good. I just wish it was cut into smaller pieces so that I wasn't just putting 1 large chunk of chicken or steak into a tortilla. The sides you received with the fajitas were good: cheese, guac, pico. We were not able to sit in an area that was unoccupied because we were told it would be avb for a party of 13 which they only sat 6 people in the area that was more spacious which I was LIED too and told they had a party of 10 AND THEY BOOKED ON OPEN TABLE! Then to top it all off they did even have salsa verde.... the manager offered us some damn ice cream for the inconvenience which we are mostly all lactose Intolerant. I can here with my mother, sister and daughter, I was blown away. Let's start with our waitress, (I wish I remembered her name because she deserve recognition) she was knowledgeable, offered suggestions, was perfectly attentive! They also had a manager I believe in the section who was on top of everything as the waitress had numerous tables! It was flawless!!! The service was ok, a little slow. Our waiter was fine, although the woman that made our guacamole looked...miserable. I saw employees on phones a number of times texting, which always looks unprofessional to me, and makes me wonder why they're working. If it's a break I get it, but usually there's a specific place employees hang out? I personally didn't like the chips and salsa, but others in my party did. The guacamole was just mashed avocadoes with big chunks of onion and tomato and little to no seasoning. I don't think there was any salt or lime juice in it. My food was ok...the salad was mostly lettuce and a lot of ground beef. The seasoning on the meat was good but some of the chunks of meat were rly big, like it had been cooking without being mixed at all or were part of a burger or something. Aside from the lettuce and meat there was a big corn shell, and then a very small amount of cheese, tomatoes, avocado, corn, and beans. Like....20 beans maybe haha. At that point just don't bother putting them on there. The chocolate piñata was epic, as it always is, and really fun for people coming in from out of town. Is it worth the rest of the meal? I would say no. I'll come back if someone specifically has a desire to go and I'm meeting them, but other than that....probs a no go. I've been a huge fan of your restaurant for well over 29 years. I used to frequent your Chicago location off North Avenue. I'd tell everyone "best fajitas EVER!" I've brought multiple business clients and even had a birthday dinner for my wife there. So, we moved to Naperville...Every where I went to try fajitas, Uncle Julio's would be my measuring stick. Of course no place ever measured up. I always hoped, wished and prayed that one would come to Naperville. Tried the Oakbrook one a few times. But it never measured up to my expectations. So finally, when I got wind of one opening up in Naperville, I was too excited! We've frequented this location since opening and have always enjoyed our food....until tonight By far my worst experience at an Uncle Julio's restaurant. When we arrived we requested to sit outside. We were steered to sit in the open area. But I didn't want a high top table. So I requested to be seated in the back area. One lady told me "10-15 minute wait"...another walked up (the one that tried to steer us to the other area) and said to her "how long did you tell them? Did you tell them it was a 35 minute wait?"...so I said "we can wait." 10 minutes later my buzzer goes off. We go to be seated and what do ya' know? More than half of this area was empty tables! It'll take 35 minutes for what!? So we brushed off those shenanigans and sat down to enjoy our dinner. Took a very long time for our server to come. But we didn't trip; we were hanging out. We first ordered table side guacamole....delicious as usual. We both ordered the same thing for our meal: lobster y fajitas...The exciting thing is watching your food come out sizzling nice & hot.. there is only one thing that we say to death: NOT TODAY!!!! Fajitas came out limping barely seared on one side...not a sizzle in sight... not to mention how skimpy the fajitas were...lobster tail barely warm...rice & beans were luke warm...had barely a spit worth of butter in the cup....it was pathetic.. So, we wait for server to return....he never does.....and a lady comes to our table after seeing us not eating and looking around for some help...she doesn't introduce herself...I'm guessing she's a manager...and asked if we needed help...we explained our issue and she seemed to understand, removed our plates and said she'll have it redone... So she brings us back our plates...with the original food on it...still not sizzling...so I guess they nuked it...now my steak is over cooked...so we tell her to just take the plates and we don't want the food anymore....no apology...no offer for any compensation....so as we are sitting there looking stupid....guess who returns??? OUR WAITER! Lmao! He's like "our you still waiting for your food?" Are you kidding me!? We informed him we've been inadequately served twice in his absence. He said he will tell a manager and we told him we believe that's who handle the food previously. He disappears for a while again. So we get up to go look for him so we can find food elsewhere. Then we run into him and he hands us a bill for the guacamole and said a quick sorry again. It felt like nobody really gave a s$&@. You are one of my favorite restaurants. Ive seen this place pop up a few times in many different locations. Finally, after many months, I decided to check it out. Overall, food was good and a little expensive, service would friendly, but iffy. Last night, we walked in with a group of 4. We sat down right away and waited. Finally, with what felt like 20 minutes, someone approached the table and apologized for being late since they were busy dealing with a big party. They left and we waited for another (what felt like 10-15 minutes) before someone returned. In that time, someone did drop off with chips and salsa and I believe they also dropped off with some water. We got our orders in right away and they were kinda quick with the food. I had the Carne Asada and Enchiladas. The steak was cooked beautifully. Marinated and tender. The Enchiladas were delicious and I did like their read sauce. It was a cheese enchiladas. I did like their rices and beans. I got a frozen margaritas but it tasted very salty. It was basically salted and frozen. I would not recommend that. My issues were a few things. It is very loud in here, With a small table of 4, you could not hear the person across the table from you. The food prices were a little high for a Mexican restaurant, I like it was a at least 20 dollar places per person. Although I hated the fact that we waited a long, long, long time to place our orders, they did apologize, so I cant really fault them on that. In the end, the food was delicious, and I did enjoy my meal. Pretty bad experience here tonight. Waiter sucked. My wife's chicken tacos were cold, I thought she was exaggerating but then she gave me a piece of chicken it was literally cold as if the chicken just came from the refrigerator. It took the waiter about 7-8 minutes to come check on us so my wife could send the tacos back. When the tacos returned they were now nice and hot but instead of the flour tortillas she requested the new ones were on corn tortillas. Needless to say at this point she just wanted to leave. My enchiladas we not very good either, not sure if they put liquid queso cheese in them or something but they were not very good. This review is based on a delivery order I recently received from the good folks at the Old orchard Uncle Julio's. I've eaten here many times and always found the food satisfactory. However, as of late, the food has gotten progressively worse. Now getting back to this particular order. Chicken fajitas usually include a fair amount of green peppers and onions you know typical fajita veggies. On this order it seems they had run out of green peppers and apparently the cook forgot that poultry needs to be cooked thoroughly. First off. Service was great! Our waiter was attentive and really kind, Drinks were good as well. The downfall was really the food, it was mediocre at best. It took an insane amount of time to even get to the table. I got the steak fajitas and they were so salty I needed tortillas at every bite. The flour tortillas were okay, personally they were too thick. Corn were fine, fell apart fast but that's common for corn tortillas that aren't fresh. We made reservations for six people at 6:15 on a Saturday night. It was a last minute reservation due to a change in plans. It was the only opening available before 9:00 PM. I heard about their chocolate piñata and thought it would be a fun place to have a family dinner for our little one's birthday. The place was packed. The frozen margaritas tasted fresh and not premixed. We ordered a lemonade for our little one, which was served in an 8 oz cup with a straw. I had a feeling it was a spill waiting to happen, but I just hoped for the best. I should've went with my intuition because a spill definitely happened and right in front of my husband's pants. Lovely. After we sopped up the spill the best we could, we asked for another drink for our little one, but in a kid's cup with a top. We assumed our waiter was new, as one would know to serve a kids drink in a kids cup with a top (if available). He was friendly, but seemed flustered and obviously not on top of things. We were starving, so we ordered our entrees. We enjoyed our chips and salsa while we waited for our food. And then we kept waiting.. and waiting. We waited for probably 50 minutes for our entrees to come. I understand they were super busy and packed. I understand we were a large party. But we all ordered tacos. We didn't order any meals that required extra time or attention to make. The waiter kept apologizing about the delay. Based on how the night was going, we made sure to let the waiter know (twice) that we we wanted the chocolate piñata for my little one (in case that took a long time to throw together). We finally received our food. I ordered the shrimp tacos and it was good, but I felt like it was missing sauce or something to give it a kick. I tasted my SIL's chicken tacos and I actually enjoyed that more than my own meal. The seasoning was unique and delicious. It's not everyday that I'd rather have chicken over the shrimp. After inhaling our food, our waiter came out with the chocolate piñata and a mini bat. Our little one was so excited to hit the piñata and loved it when the churros and fruit busted out. The fruit and churros were delicious and tasted even more amazing when dipped in caramel, more chocolate and/or whipped cream. This was the highlight of the night. We didn't have the best experience up to that point, but this piñata evened things out. I probably saw 4 piñatas come out during our (long) wait, so it's very popular and now I know why. My mother just turned 92 and as on her other birthdays she wanted to go to Uncle Julio's. I am always thrilled when she picks Uncle Julie. We loved the tableside guacamole custom made at your table by Lucia. You pick what you want in it and Lucia is a pro that makes it fun to watch and delicious to eat. We were greeted by a manager, Gina, when we arrived. She checked in on everyone and jumped right in to help if anyone wanted anything. Our waitress Mel was right there making sure everything went smoothly. We ordered fajita's and the meat was tender and well seasoned. The portions are plentiful so we will both have lunch the next day out of our leftovers. Chips and salsas are included with the meal. My mother along with the rest of my family love the chocolate pinata. Breaking it with the stick makes my 92 year old mother giggle and the inside is filled with fresh fruit and churros. The platter is decorated with sauce and whipped cream. Everytime we go whether it is a large party or just two people we have had excellent service and perfectly prepared food. Parking is plentiful and handicapped parking is right in front of the door. It is right off of I88 so convenient if you don't live as close as I do. read more

First, and foremost, Eduardo was a great waiter and I would ask for him again. Also, I love the new way to pay your check because it is very fast and convenient, although, watch for the set amount for the tip when you pay. After that, I am going to have to think about coming here again. It is very loud in this place now. It is very difficult to hear across the table with the acoustics. There were many tables for 4 open and available but we were seated way back in the corner by some shelves that were made of pipes! It makes it very difficult to sit at this table plus the pipes are dangerous when getting up and out! Something was wrong with the bar service on Friday night. i ordered 3 beers and none of them tasted right. I don't know if it was the soap in the glasses or the salt on the rim of the glass but it was horrible each time. But the reason that I am writing is the fact that we asked for 2 ramekins of Ranch Dressing and 1 of sour cream. Eduardo brought the Ranch Dressing first and brought the sour cream about 5 minutes later. There was about 1 tablespoon of each condiment in the each ramekin. We were very surprised when the bill came that we were charged $1.99 for each Ranch Dressing and 99 cents for the sour cream. Another great experience and meal! We haven't been here since pre-Covid but our daughter insisted we go here for after her First Communion. We went for lunch, party of 12 that we made a prior reservation for. Our waitress was awesome! You could tell they were a bit short staffed (our new normal) but she kept her motivation and really ensured we had a great experience. The manager was also very attentive to customers, etc... but after speaking with him and finding out he is a fellow military veteran, that didn't surprise me that he had such attention to detail. The only thing good here is the steak and the chocolate piñata. Not authentic Mexican food at all. Very disappointing. Had the enchiladas and it tasted like it the sauce came out of a can. It had small pieces of meat in it. The enchiladas came with yellow cheese was not spicy at all. The waitress ask if we wanted a guacamole and i said yes not knowing that they were going to charge me $14 for each. The $14 one is the one that they make at the table for you and no one came to the table to make it. I didn't know I was charged that until I looked at the email Receipt when I got home. Not good. Yesterday I went there with my daughter and granddaughters for an early dinner. It was an awful experience! The server stood against the wall on his phone the whole time and when the other diners around us got their food (they all came in after us) did he go and get our food. It was obviously sitting for a while because it was not hot. When we asked if it could be heated up he became extremely rude and argued with us that it was just prepared. We had time to count because we had to wait. Figured out it was probably a staffing issue. Had that been communicated to us it would have come across better. Seated. Service very slow. Took 45 minutes to get our food. When we asked our server he acted surprised and said it was probably because there were a lot of us. Huh?!? There were 4 adults, 1 child. Food was good but prices hv gone up and quantity gone wayyyy down. Steak and chicken fajitas had 3 small slices of steak, 4 pieces of chicken. $22 for that. Service was sub par yo say the least except for the young lady busing tables. She was amazing. She should probably be promoted to running the joint. I've been here quite a few times and I've only had one bad experience. Which is why I wish I could give it a 4.5 rating instead of just 4. I usually get the queso dip as an app. I originally always ordered the cowboy queso but the pieces of steak where never completely cut so it made it difficult to get on the chip. But still both are pretty good. My personal favorite entree is the steak fajitas, the steak has so much flavor, and is super juicy. Now most importantly the margaritas...they have daily fresh fruit margaritas and they are ALWAYS delicious! My favorite has to be Watermelon, but I have yet to come on a pineapple day. You definitely need to try one! The service has always been great, their is a manager there that usually recognizes my daughter and always comes over and says hi. She's a delight! This used to be a favorite of mine, but the quality of the food has gone way down, especially takeout. They only started doing takeout for COVID, but it has now been TWO YEARS since then. I think two years is long enough to figure it out - get with the program! My order is always correct on the receipt but things are wrong when I get home. The chips are usually stale, and they have changed the crispy taco shells - they used to taste homemade, but now, I have had better store-bought ones, and today they were so stale they tasted like they had been left out overnight. I couldn't even eat them, I had to scrape out the filling and use the chips to scoop it up instead. There is no excuse for how far down the quality has dropped, especially with how expensive they are & how much smaller the portions are now too. If you can't afford to stay open & keep your food integrity, then maybe you should just close or don't do takeout anymore. read more

This is probably the most overrated Mexican restaurant in the West suburbs, inattentive service, lousy drinks menu and very subpar food. Mexican food is hard to screw up and make boring unimaginative dishes, but they figured it out. My mistake for trying to be healthy, but the chicken salad was absolute rubbish, way overcooked chewy chicken on a bed of sad lettuce, tableside guacamole is an absolute ripoff, nothing special and underseasoned. Veg quesadilla too boring and chewy, it's one of those dishes that you can't finish because you're tired of chewing. Beef tacos are literally just ground beef, go to Fire it Up instead, much better quality, they actually season their meat with cumin and chili powder.
