We were on our last leg of our family eating our way through the mall and I knew that we definitely had to try Uncle Tetsu. I was just enjoying my Dirty Tea from Lucky Tea and out of the corner of my eyes I saw the huge line for Uncle Tetsu and decided to come back and explore the mall some more. This area is now my favorite part of the mall. It is located upstairs right by the Icon Theatre and the Macy's Men. This area had the three very delectable desserts that I tried on this day, Uncle Tetsu, Lucky Tea and SomiSomi. The ramen place looks awesome and I would've tried it as well except the line was three to four times as long as Uncle Tetsu's line. Each cheesecake was $12.30 which to me is very reasonable. It's a great size and enough of a snack for 2 to 3 people. There were many flavors available but we decided to order the original, chocolate and ube . The lines went very quick so don't let it discourage you as each transaction lasted around a minute since they are quite quick in getting orders and filling it right on the spot. I love how they give you a handy paperback with each order and I saw so many people carrying this shopping bag all through the mall. There's a small area of tables and chairs right by what we call the "mermaid wall" where we sat down and tried all the flavors. I don't remember the cashier offering any forks and didn't see it outside of their location but, fortunately, I was prepared and had a couple in my purse. We could not wait to did into these. These cheesecake immediately reminded me of the Filipino mamon. It's very soft and spongy and not overly sweet. We all enjoyed the original and chocolate but, unfortunately, the ube was very bland. If I was blindfolded and had to do a taste test, I would not be able to guess the ube for any flavor as it lacked any kind of flavor at all. They got the purple color but that's as close as it got to ube and I really wanted to like it as I like anything with ube and it was a total disappointment for me. I am kinda glad that Valley Fair Mall is quite a ways from us because I would definitely be hanging out here more frequently. I highly recommend trying this place out. I'm now partial to the original and chocolate but afraid to try the other flavors due to the ube let-down. Is it just me or does Uncle Tetsu taste better in Hawaii?! When I first had them in Hawaii I was amazed at how good they were. The San Jose location did not amaze me at all. Been a huge fan of Uncle Tetsu cheesecakes for years, super stoked there's one so close by now! Keep in mind when you're trying Uncle Tetsu out for the first time - you might be surprised on how light and fluffy it is compared to a "normal cheesecake". This is what I love about Japanese style cheesecake like these ones though - you can easily eat half of this in one sitting without feeling that heaviness. Majority of their Cheesecakes are priced at $11.80 but their Burnt Basque styled Cheesecakes are priced almost double at $21.80. Here's a breakdown of the flavors I've tried - Original: this is the best of the best and the OG. Light, subtle, super addictive. I always come back for this one. Ube: this was the first time I actually tried a flavored version - I expected to taste the Ube a lot more but this one actually just tastes like an original to me - no ube flavors. Strawberry: if you like strawberry pocky then this one is for you! Unfortunately, I am not a big fan of that artificial strawberry taste but my husband loves it a lot! Original burnt basque: decided to splurge one time and see what the hype is all about for burnt basque cheesecakes. Verdict: very good (and no it doesn't taste "burnt" at the top haha) - this is much more similar to what you'd expect from a normal, creamier cheesecake. TL;DR - They run out of popular flavors on busy days. If picking up on the weekend, you might want to order a day or two before. If there's a long line for walk-ins, it'll move fast. Worth the wait! Delicious, fluffy, eggy light cake that's delicious, whether you have a sweet tooth or not. All natural ingredients too. I came here on a Monday holiday (President's Day) around 4:00pm. There was a moderate line, but it moved very quickly. I didn't wait more that's 15-20 minutes. A lady informed everyone in line that the only flavors they had left were original, matcha, and ube. I've heard the most popular flavors are chocolate and strawberry. If you plan to pick up on the weekend, I recommend placing your order online 1-2 days in advance. Getting a pick-up appointment the day of is unlikely. I ordered the ube cheesecake ($11.08 + $1.09 tax = $12.89 total). It came in a cute red bag which makes these cakes a nice gift option. My friend and I had never had Japanese cake before... one word: WOW. One bite and our jaws dropped. We both have ridiculously large sweet tooths (my friend is a baker) so we didn't expect it to be THAT good, but boy were we wrong. The sweetness is just right, so it's perfect whether you have a big sweet tooth or not. It's jiggly, airy, and eggy. The ube flavor was very subtle (almost unnoticeable). We ate it fresh while it was still warm and it was like eating a cloud. It's so light, you'll feel like you can eat the whole cake. I refrigerated some of it to eat the next day, and as others have stated, it is much denser and flavorful when eaten cold. Simply warm it up for 30 seconds or so to get it back to the original fluffy texture. In my opinion, it tastes better warm and fresh. Fast forward a few days and I came back to grab that chocolate cake. Yup, that's right. I had Uncle Tetsu's twice in one week because it's that good! It was a Friday around 4pm. There was no wait and all the flavors were available. I had it the next day (room temperature) and I was not as impressed by the flavor. I'm surprised it's one of the more popular ones. In my opinion, the ube wins, hands down. FYI - it can stay at room temperature for 12 hours or refrigerated for 3 days. It's also made from all natural ingredients. I love Uncle Tetsu. I've been to a few of their locations in the past (Australia, Hawaii, Hillsdale mall, etc) so I can tell you that the quality is consistent throughout all shops. If you've never had Japanese cheesecake before, note that it's like a very soft sponge cake with an essence of cream cheese and isn't too sweet. I've made it before in the past which can be laborious so I would recommend buying it if you can! Each cheesecake is about $11-$12 unless it's a speciality one like the Basque cheesecake. Depending on the location, their flavors can include coffee, chocolate, strawberry, ube, and matcha, but all of them will have the OG, plain. (Can't go wrong with plain.) The coffee and chocolate are solid contenders if you're looking for a second flavor, but if you like ube (and I like ube) get that one. The valley fair location is located near the movie theater across from Somi Somi and almost right above Shake Shack. So if you park near Cheesecake Factory and walk in through the entrance nearest shake shack, you can avoid going through the mall. Most of their production (as you can see from the pictures) is done in the open so you know they're clean with everyone watching. The employees are a well oiled machine and churn out beautiful cheesecakes while whoever is working at the register is always quite polite and accommodating. I went two days before Christmas right when they opened and there was a line, but it moved fast. Most everyone in line kept their social distance. We came here on 1/5/21 at 5:12pm and there was nobody here. We ordered the Ube ($11.80) and the Original ($11.80). There was only one person working here at the time as far as I saw. I only tried the Original and it tasted good to me. The Ube one looked good but I didn't try that one. Each one most likely could be enough for one person, but it was probably meant for two or more people. I love Japanese takes on food, but this is one that I don't find all that impressive. Uncle Tetsu's Japanese take on cheesecake is one that's about as jiggly as it is fluffy. Not unlike a soufflé or even omurice, these cheesecakes definitely have a unique aesthetic about them. Unfortunately, the flavor is too subtle for its own good. I got the original and strawberry flavors when I was here, and while there was nothing wrong with the taste, it just didn't have the blast of creamy flavor you normally get from cheesecake. I will say the strawberry was pretty good, but it was very much artificial. It tastes like strawberry Pocky or Hello Panda, which are great but come on. They don't actually taste like strawberries. It's also interesting that you can eat slices with your hands and not make much of a mess. That's nice and I thought that was worth mentioning. I first had Uncle Tetsu in Taiwan maybe 5-6 years ago, and I'm so happy they opened one in the area! While shopping at Valleyfair over the weekend, I stopped by to order two cakes, 1 original and 1 ube. I was surprised that I was able to order in person since the past few times I'd tried, they had always run out and told me to place online orders in advance in the future. Original cheesecake was so yummy -- light and fluffy, perfect to pair with a nice cup of coffee. In addition, it has a slight jiggle due to its airiness and fluffiness. The original cake definitely had that cheesecake taste but with a more bready texture. It was super light and seemingly melted in my mouth. I thought it was fantastic and reminded me of sponge cakes! As for the chocolate cake, there was a fairly distinct cocoa flavor that complimented the cheese taste. I thought it was the tastiest of the three. Now, the oreo one had me a little disappointed. I couldn't really tell any difference in taste between this one and the original one. The only major difference would be the visual oreo bits inside the cake and the oreo cookie on top. This is definitely not the place to live near if you are on a diet. The first time I had an Uncle Tetsu was in Honolulu and it was amazing then. It's still amazing now and so close to home! They are currently making you pre-order before you go and then give you a time to pick up, but we didn't do it as I didn't even know they opened before walking by it in the mall and the worker there told me to come back right at the end of the pick up window we were near (I believe they do pickup windows every hour, but not sure). We went back after a trip to the Apple store, and they had a leftover! It was still warm! If you are unfamiliar with these cheesecakes, they are NOT like the cheesecakes you get at The Cheesecake Factory (not that those are bad). These are more of a fluffy egg tasting cake. I just love the taste! You can literally eat the entire cake it's so light and airy and not too sweet. I am a fan of the Original flavor, but they do have others. The service was super good.
