From the moment we walked in, it felt like we weren't welcome - lots of strange looks and an overall vibe that they didn't want us there. The service was good. The true problem began with our first bite, nay, our first smell. For our piña colada and macadamia ice cream shave ice had a forgettable flavor smeared with a smell and taste identified by 75 percent of our party as bad movie theater popcorn chemical. Meanwhile, our Blue Hawaiian was as artificial as the bowl it was in -- a bowl, I must add, was poorly designed to pool and spill melted shave ice. As we swallowed our last bite of the "macadamia ice cream " (in reality vanilla ice cream with a scattering of macadamia nut pieces), and threw away the watery remains of our meal, we knew it would be an experience to remember. Our waitress recommended Uncles but it wasn't quite at the level of Jojos. The ice was less fluffy and soft to the point it was difficult to scoop with a spoon. If I could leave zero stars, I would. We were in line at 3:30 on a Sunday. I noticed a kid in front us of in the line carrying a closing sign, but didn't think anything of it. Besides my husband and I, there were two people in line behind us. After we had already been there waiting about five minutes, the employee came out and refused to serve us saying she had a planned break and we could come back in an hour. We asked her politely to stay open just for the four of us, and she refused. I mentioned to her I'd read about this same situation on Yelp, and I told her I was going to leave a similar review. Her response was "I could give a f*** about your yelp review" then told us to leave before she called security. Absolutely unbelievable service. We were told this was the best shave ice on the island, maybe so, but the worst customer service. Management needs to be made aware of this. read more

We wanted something sweet and decided to try the shaved ice from here since it was next door to where we just had dinner. We couldn't agree on a flavor, so we decided on the Noka'oi, since it's supposed to be the best flavor. Noka'oi has melon and coconut syrups with fresh pineapple, macnut ice cream, and a sweet cream cap. This combination was too sweet and artificially flavored for me, so we didn't end up finishing it. It was a lot - ice cream, strawberry syrup, vanilla syrup, cream cap and cut strawberries. I thought it was overly sweet. I think next time, I'll just stick with shaved ice. But it was a nice treat for the end of the meal. Also it was $13+ for it. I think the fresh strawberries make it a bit more expensive than some of the other options. We visited Uncle's a few times.. we loved it enough to go 4 times in 7 days. We tried shaved snow, the strawberry flavor which was like a frozen strawberry milk aka delicious! You just have to get over the fact the texture is not what you are expecting. For shaved ice, the passionfruit and pineapple flavors were my absolute favs, so tropical! I was a little weary of putting ice cream in my shaved ice because I am a mochi gal (they don't have mochi at Uncles) but it was delicious! If you go during lunch or dinner time, be prepared to wait but we never waited for too long. I definitely recommend, we will go back! read more

Heard about Hawaiian shaved ice, so we had to try some, this place was close to where we were staving, and it was soo great the first time, we came again later in the week and both times we had a good experience and the shaved ice was delicious. They let only one set of customers in at a time with masks, which I liked. Update 5/17/21: The owner reached out to us to acknowledge the incident and offer to rectify the situation. We really appreciated that and look forward to trying Uncle's again next time we are in Kauai. First visit 5 stars Second visit 1 star We were so impressed with our first visit yesterday (5/14/21) that we decided to be the first in line at opening today. Yesterday our party of six loved the soft consistency of the three shave ice we shared, the delicious syrup flavors, and the nuttiness of the macnut ice cream underneath. The two staff members were also helpful and nice. This was the third shave ice place we tried in Kauai and the best of the three. They were sold out of the honey toast and suggested we come at opening if we wanted to try this popular item. When we arrived to be the first people in line at noon the sign was still flipped to closed & the doors were locked/closed. We saw one of the same women who had helped us the night before inside. We then stood in line for ages, eventually calling the shop and its Lihue branch (talked to PJ) around 12:45 pm to ask if they were opening later today. Uncle's Lihue said the Poipu site should already be open and said they'd call us back to confirm (they did not). We eventually gave up and went to Lappert's a couple of doors down for their excellent mango bread and Nēnē ice cream. On our way back we saw that one of the doors had finally swung open at around 1:15 pm. Stepped in to see if we could snag a slice of the honey bread on our way out and were told they didn't have any. The person who was supposed to open the store told the other staff member who had just arrived that the store opened on time. All in all it was totally bizarre how different the experiences were one day apart. Sounds like the experience depends on the mood of the staff day to day. read more

The melon and coconut syrup of the best was really good. The pineapple was a little sour which was okay since the syrup was sweet. What was really good was the ice cream on the bottom. It was really good with the melon syrup. It tasted like melona ice cream bars. The shaved ice was not as soft as others and the center of it was like a block of ice. I had to wait for it to melt a bit because I could not break it with the the spoon. Luckily Hawaii is hot so it wasn't a long wait before it melts. Overall the flavors were really good and the ice cream was really good. Only criticism is that the ice was not as soft and the center was a big chucks of ice. read more
