Wonderful time at Uncle's Shaved Ice yesterday. Met awesome Ethan, who opened the door early, since we were there at 11:50stalking the place (but they open at 12:00), and he called to us with a big smile, "Hui! You coming in?" He had us four aunties cracking up from the get go. Shave ice was delicious, flavor combos were so Ono, especially with ice cream and snow cap drizzle. But the winner was talking story with Ethan, and our new friend, Derek and his gramma Lisa, as we admired Derek's blue lips and tongue from his shave ice! Stopping here made our day, deeeelicious & refreshing shave ice, wonderful customer service, and a chance to chill, talk story, and enjoy new friends. We enjoyed this small shave ice place located in Lihue near the Costco and Safeway. Service was friendly and quick. The shave ice was so soft and fluffy. We ordered the island nectar and it was really refreshing. Loved the texture from the macadamia nut ice cream as well. Oh man, this place was no good. First off the female worker was rude, unhelpful and had a tone of someone who disliked her job extensively. For starters she barely got up when I walked in, and rudely asked "are they with you" when the rest of my family walked in. Then she proceeds to tell us what they are out of. After we ordered and paid, she put her giant piece of ice cream cake into the freezer and pulled out pre made ice cream in bowls which looked like it had previously melted and refroze (think flat ice cream). A little bit later she said she used the last of the lilikoi syrup so we had to pick something else and when asked if there was more she replied "I've been busy all day, I'm not going to try and figure out which bottle is the right one". Then a bit later she starts giving me cash back. Why? Good question! So I asked. "We out of Azuki beans". Uhhh ok. She the proceeds to look through a paper bag on the floor (which is grossly sticky by the way) and finds a can and says "oh yeah I found some, you can give me the money back". As I pulled the money out of my pocket and put it on the counter she aggressively tells me "you're missing a quarter!" To which I responded, "calm down I'm getting it". It was a terrible experience and to top it off the syrups were bland and the ice was horrible. Do yourself a favor and head to Hee Fat, Wailua, and The Good Stuff. They do good ice and have much better customer service skills! My bet? Gone by the time we come back to the beautiful island of Kauai. read more

Small store located in a modern mini mall. Coming in it's very small and tight. No seating inside but there are outside tables and benches within the mall area. There's only one staff holding down the forte taking orders and preparing the dessert. We ordered a mango and coconut shave ice with fresh pineapple. It was refreshingly tasty and delicious. My daughter was jumping up and down to get this shaved ice after landing at the airport! Nearby public restrooms and friendly staff and huge shaved ice serving with little to no wait. Not a lot of places to sit and enjoy, and no options for fresh fruit topping but overall a great first stop to go to after landing in Kauai. read more

This spot is a little hard to find the entrance- it's on the exterior side of the shopping center on Nuhou St side. We visited this place twice! Both guys working there were friendly and engaged us with conversation. On the first visit, azuki beans ran out so I was bummed. The second time, they had some and was happy! Went to Uncle's Shave Ice near the Safeway and Verde restaurant. It was a little expensive at $7 for the basic size with syrup flavoring because the bowl was not that big. This is the base price; there's no price signage so maybe this is useful info. And it's $1.50 more for a topping and $2.50 more for ice cream. My new favorite shave ice trick is to get it with ice cream and my Blue Hawaiian (coconut flavor with macadamia nut ice cream) was damn good. We also had one with vanilla and Ube flavoring, no ice cream, and Haupia cream topping. I would not recommend Ube; it tastes kind of strange. And stick with the coconut flavoring instead of vanilla if you're pairing Haupia cream. Nice little pre-dinner snack. No indoor seating but there's a bench/table right outside. read more

Uncle's Shave Ice was good but not great shave ice... We were recently on Kauai for 2 weeks and out of those 14 days, we had shave ice 7 of those days. Ha! We pretty much know where to get good shave ice on the island. We just love it as a perfect, cool and refreshing treat. We had seen Uncle's on our first trip to the island in 2019 but never got to try it. And when we were on Kauai again in 2020 for 2 weeks, the stars just didnt align. This year, we made a point to try it. With its location in the same general plaza as Domino's and not too far from Safeway, it was easy to get to. I went with a small ($5.50) with lilikoi, lychee and pineapple. You can choose up to 3 flavors. The lady got a small but went with pineapple and coconut plus a snow cap ($1.50)... We both liked our shave ices but they werent as good as some of the other ones on the island. The add ons at $1.50 each was a little steep also, IMO. Compared to the other places and considering the other places use natural fruit syrups, Uncle's isnt as competitive for me, taste wise. The ice was still smooth so that was great. My flavors were still good. It just wasnt great like the other places we go to. They also serve honey toast, caramel apples and frozen bananas. Customer service was ok. read more

I stopped by here this past Monday with my wife for a shave ice. We had been to a couple of different restaurants in the same plaza as Uncles and so wanted to give it a try as well. Due to Covid they were only allowing one group of people into the store at a time which we had no problem with. Once inside I was able to see the flavors and decided to go with a large and choose a lilikoi/coconut hybrid flavor for one half and then pineapple for the other. It was ready for us quite quickly and we headed back to our car to eat it. The ice here was nice and fluffy which both my wife and I appreciated. As for the flavors, well, they were both a little sweet for my liking, especially the lilikoi coconut one. After a while, I got somewhat used to the sweetness but it was still too much and we left maybe 1/3 of it. The bottom line for me is that I probably wouldn't stop by here again in the future. I thought that their ice was good but that the syrups were a little too sweet for my liking. read more

He continued his conversation with his coworker as he tossed our dishes of ice cream down on the counter. It was obvious that he didn't really want to deal with us or making our shave ice. The shave ice flavor was fine. The ice was a little hard and crunchy in spots and the vanilla mac nut ice cream wasn't as tasty as it had been elsewhere. I would personally recommend skipping Uncle's and heading for Waikomo Shave Ice in the shopping center on the other side of the traffic circle. We knew that the locals in Kauai weren't fond of tourists and we are always respectful, leave generous tips, etc. When we walked in we weren't greeted and the first thing out of the workers mouth was the numerous menu items they were out of, which is okay, but it seemed as though she didn't want to serve us. We've been to Uncle's on previous trips to Kauai and knew we would be back on this visit. The hubby went with the Island Nectar and I decided on Strawberries and Cream (from the favorite combination options). Obviously is was DELISH! I don't remember how much it was on previous visits (probably 4+ years ago was the most recent), but it's definitely a pretty penny ($23+ for both of our desserts). Worth it? We found this place by chance because we had to pass some time before our train ride. It's been a long time since we had this quality of shave ice. It just melted in our mouths without having those awkward chunks of ice I usually get in lower quality shave ice. Their menu and way of ordering is so unique. There's one price and the shave ice includes choices of "OVERS," which are things you can put on top of that shave ice and "UNDERS," which are things you can add under the shave ice. My man and I randomly walked into Uncle's Shave Ice on a scorching hot day. Uncle's Shave Ice is a small well presented shop located in a small shopping center in Lihue. Aside from shave ice, their menu also consists of other desserts like ice cream and snow bowls! Service was efficient and friendly and if you pay cash, they apply a discount! There was one woman in front of us in line and apparently they got her order wrong. I thought it was kind of the staff to comp the missing shave ice from her order. I wish other businesses did this. I found myself a bit disappointed in the quality of the ice... Simply put, the ice was chunky and I felt myself having to crunch ice with each bite or shaving off portions that were coated with thick ice. It seemed as though their machine could be sharpened during maintenance. Overall, just ok. I've had higher quality shave ice. read more

Uncle's has been hit or miss for us. For the amount they charge, there should be more than just enough syrup to cover the outside (all of our shave ice we're pure white in the middle), the syrup should be more flavorful (it was really weak today!) and more than just a sprinkle of li hing mui powder or a drizzle of snow cap! $1.50 and you can't spray a lot of sour spray? Or use a tablespoon of li hing mui powder? And the snow cap is barely enough to have it in the first several bites! Disappointing. We all threw ours away half finished. For $35, that's a waste. And to top it off, the local girl working the register today with the black hair was not friendly AT ALL. The blonde lady that's been working there for a bit was friendly as usual.
