This is a great spot to grab a drink and sit outside on their patio area. I stopped in recently to have a hand crafted cocktail and it didn't disappoint. The place wasn't at all busy on a Sunday evening, but I guess that is to be expected and I liked that. The hostess was kind and courteous. The bartender on the other hand wasn't the friendliest for a bartender or in a hurry to wait on us or to make our drinks, but she got the job done and my drink was excellent. My girlfriend's on the other hand, not so much. It was too spicy and not in the good way. It lacked the flavor complexity it was shooting for, but I finished it for her. We initially sat at the bar, but made our way to the outside patio shortly thereafter to enjoy the views and the cool breeze on the outside patio furniture. Based on the other reviews, I'm curious if it was just an off day. That said me and my family went to union hall for brunch and were not impressed with the food. My son did enjoy the avocado toast. The salad on the side of my chicken sandwich tasted like the lettuce may have been old and the pickle had a weird sweet taste to it. I think it's time to accept facts: I'm not a 21-year-old anymore, and that is exactly what every single Hoboken bar is targeting. I came here with my chum the Shanimal for a drink last Friday when it was extremely nippy. She's doing a dry January so I tried to find an establishment that had at least taken the time to craft a nominal mocktail menu, as well as one with an interesting bourbon-based cocktail. After sifting through a dozen or so bars metaphorically covered in Malibu Rum, Union Hall seemed like our best option. It was conveniently located a few blocks from where we'd had dinner right off the river, and was pretty much a straight shot down to the Terminal (which turned out to be moot because I just missed my train and opted for Uber. Oh well.). The first potential red flag was that it was about 6:45pm on a Friday...and maybe one or two other customers in what amounted to a HUGE interior space. I initially thought this was the spot where my former employer had their holiday party a few years ago, because it legit could have housed it (it was actually a short walk away at House of Q). It's very spacious, both by the bar and in the more formal dining/seating area, and I'm assuming that's because they're expecting a lot of standing patrons later on in the night. Maybe it was due to the frigid temps, but we were both surprised no one else was in there on a Friday night. I'd also point out that I've known my share of young adult party animals, all of whom were willing to go out on the town weather-wise in anything short of a state of emergency. I ordered a Vanilla Chai Old Fashioned, which sounded like an interesting spin on the classic cocktail, and the Shanimal got the What's Up Doc, which featured carrots (of course), along with ginger and watermelon juice. I was honestly a little disappointed by my drink, despite the concept. It was surprisingly watery/bland, and I could tell from the warmth or lack thereof on my cheeks that there was barely any bourbon in it; they opted to go heavy on the chai. It definitely should have had more of a balance to it. The worst part by far though was the service. We were greeted by an unsmiling young female at the bar who honestly gave off more of a Daria impersonator vibe than a professional bartender. The drinks showed up fairly quickly, but then...nothing. Keep in mind again that I could literally count the number of other customers here on half of one hand, and yet the bartender (which DID switch to someone else by the end) couldn't be bothered to come over to our area for 40 minutes. That's not an exaggeration, and it wasn't even acknowledged as an issue. We had empty glasses and almost certainly would have ordered a second drink, but they lost out on that opportunity, which is a dictionary definition self-inflicted wound on their part. Easily some of the worst customer service I've experienced in the post-COVID era, which is saying something. Celebrated a birthday here and it turned out great! It started with a little confusion regarding the reservation so I would just recommend confirming your reservation a few days before, but after that it was good. They were kind enough to let us decorate the table and bring balloons. The food was good, for apps we shared the charcuterie, wings, guac and chips. For mains, everyone got something different. They were kind enough to accommodate my picky friend and let her have chicken tenders and French fries. I had the salmon which was very good, but cooked more rare than medium rare. We came here in a Sunday and our criteria for finding a spot was that we wanted a view by the water but still had sports on so we could catch the game. Union Hall checked all those boxes! It has almost an industrial decor/ feel inside, but there is still outdoor seating. The cocktails were excellent. We got the "trash can" nachos which came at a hefty price tag ($24) but they didn't skimp out on the portions. Good for an app/ drink with a view! I have not really eaten a full meal at Union Hall for years, since I had always just found it mediocre. However, since one of my favorite bars, The Stewed Cow, changed ownership and most of the staff moved over to Union Hall, I now frequent the place, though mainly for drinks. The restaurant is spacious and modern with excellent views of the Hudson riverfront. Besides being the friendliest folks, the new staff has become really dedicated to updating the beverage menu seasonally, which I appreciate, as it leads to fresher ingredients and consistently new things to try. On the current winter cocktail list, I adore the Vanilla Chai Old Fashioned with bourbon, vanilla, chai, and lemon. The more feminine take on the classic drink offers a more delicate sweetness, while still packing a punch. The Winter in Oaxaca is another gem. The menu states that it includes mezcal, agave, coffee liqueur, and coconut milk, but they left out the fact that there is also a swirl of chocolate sauce in it, making it like a boozy milkshake. Both drinks are divine! At times, I have also further indulged by pairing my cocktails with some of their crispy, thin fries, which are very addicting. If you had given Union Hall a visit in the past, but been on the fence about enjoying it, I would definitely recommend giving it another shot now! read more

I am visiting from Los Angeles and there are a few differences I noticed being in the NYC area, for instance, that the ocean is on the right side of me versus the left side. The other thing I noticed is that the restaurants are all terrible, and patrons' acceptance of this tripe is a pathetic reflection of the populace's lack of standards, and this gastropub Union Hall is no exception. I foolishly decided to eat here based on the menu and its mid-3 star rating. In LA, mid-3's means your days are numbered but your food isn't half bad. If Union Hall were in LA, it wouldn't deserve a 1, and that's if it were compared to other purveyors of warmed frozen food, such as a derelict Smart and Final that had its power cut off and is being reviewed by discerning hobos pilfering its mildewing fridges. Such Smart and Finals don't last long before they're turned into a Spirit Halloween but Union Hall here seems to have been contentedly operating for years, with the audacity to offer reservations if you'd like to plan your disappointment in advance. Upon entering its musty abandonment, I was greeted by a sign that proclaimed bathrooms were only for paying customers, indicating to me that most people come here looking to expel rather than ingest waste. I seated myself at a festively empty chalkboard of specials, the pre-Covid chalked placeholders desperate to advertise a signature drink or dish. I ordered a beer on draft, which was completely flat and warm, and I sent it back in exchange for one that had some fungus notes never intended by the brewer. The burger was a stale bun over the thinnest frozen Bubba patty, with burnt frozen fries and a cup of Hunts. The bartender was extremely embarrassed by serving this slop, and so I paid, not in exchange for the value of goods rendered but to express my own benevolence to him, lest he look upon all of his Union Hall surroundings and determine that all hope is lost. The beer is stale, the food is subpar, and my intention to find a restaurant of some quality in Hobo-ken or New York City continues. Meanwhile, I view the customers who gave this place a good review like I view my cat, gleefully batting around a crusty turd he dug out of his litter box. The Wizard has spoken. read more

For an appetizer, we had the kale Caesar and the disco fries - both were amazing!! Probably the highlight of the meal. As for entrees, I had the fried chicken BLT with fries and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, we had two people in our group who's eggs came out extremely cold. Along with that, one of our group members didn't receive her meal at first - we had to flag down the server and she realized that the kitchen forgot to make it. Came here with some friends on a recent weekend afternoon. We were able to sit outside and have a nice view of the waterfront and city. It seems like a popular brunch place but luckily we came later in the day and didn't have to wait at all. Our waitress was very friendly and gave good recommendations. We tried a few different shareable starters and some drinks. Mt friend and I both had the Hoboken spritz. It was a bit too sweet for my taste and kind of watery. I wouldn't recommend that one. They also have a nice list of wines to choose from though. To eat we had the Brussels sprouts which were amazing! I highly suggest getting those. They were juicy and cheesy. We also had the black eyed pea hummus which came with nice crudités. We then had the nachos which were quite large. It would have been nice to have more sauce for them as they were a bit dry. I really enjoyed our meals at Union Hall. For mine, I had the Beets and Berries which was super fresh, flavorful, and refreshing and the Taylor Ham Egg and Cheese Flatbread which had a killer hollandaise sauce and was so nicely savory overall. We sprung for the giant mason jar drinks ($20 each for what we were promised was five drinks worth in one jar). I was a little put off to see that my mimosa jar was only half full. Why not add ice to the space, or use a different jar? I felt like it was light on the alcohol as well. Not sure I really agree with the assessment that there were five drinks inside, which is probably for the best, but still. Our waiter Francis was a bit short with us. He said nothing at all when he dropped the check off at the table and when he picked it up. I also wasn't a fan of their 90-minute time limit per table. We were there closer to two hours during brunch on a Saturday so it didn't seem like they were enforcing it too strictly. It's still a pandemic and times are rough, it's tiring. However, our waiter mumbled the entire time and we could barely hear him. He came out with dirty ish water glasses and soon as I started looking at them, he apologized and went back inside to switch them out. He came back out like 10 minutes after taking our order to confirm our order again. He did not bring us silverware or napkins with our drinks or appetizer- these came after our main entrees were delivered. We asked multiple times for silverware & napkins beforehand. I asked for water at least 3 times and never got a refill until after the entrees were delivered. Someone at our table witnessed him being pulled aside later so maybe he was having a rough day? They have a large bar area, counters along the windows, and a bunch of tables. The menu had options for everyone, vegetarian, vegan, gluten free etc. Many options for drinks as well. We ordered the Brussel sprouts with pork and cauliflower riced with pork. The pork was extra to add to the dish and we didn't feel it was worth it. They barely added any pork. We also ordered the cheese board $14 and three glasses of red wine. They recommend ordering 2-3 tapas per person but the two of us were filled with what we ordered. I've been here a few times over the past year and some experiences were ok and some really weren't. This last visit was for a late breakfast, and might have been one of my least favorites.. I really didn't like either of them. I never need to add salt to food that I order, but both of these had zero flavor and salt and pepper was the only thing I could think to make it better. (I added a lot of salt). They were just very very bland. And the avocado had a little bit of that taste that avocado can have when it's going bad. I did love the bread it came on though. My boyfriend got the brunch special which seems pretty great. You get a bottomless drink which is either a mimosa, bloody mary or brunch punch in a giant mason jar with a crazy straw. The mimosa was really good! You could definitely taste the champagne. Then you get to choose 4 small plates, some sweet some savory, all sounded delicious. I tried a bit of each of his plates and loved the s'mores puff and the chicken corn dog. The apple pie french toast and the salmon toast really didn't have any flavor either. I don't know what it was! Our waiters were friendly and the space is really beautiful. It also is in an amazing location and right on the water. Really great time at Union Hall last night. My SO and I, along with a few other couples came here around 6:15. The bar tender/waitress was super friendly and accommodating. The food was really great. Me and my girlfriend split the crispy rice balls with peas and prosciutto. They were phenomenal. I got the fried chicken BLT and added avocado, also really delicious. This was my first time trying as my friend set the reservation, but I'll definitely keep Union Hall in mind for next time. Great spot! read more

I came here with some friends for dinner and drinks. We ate outside. The view was great. Outdoor seating is open until 11:30PM. Fancy food, fancy drinks, fancy atmosphere, great view, and friendly service make this a great evening. There are lots of small tapas plates on the menu to share with everyone at the table if that's your style. Share share, it's only fair! The French onion mac and cheese bites come with the French onion reduction on the side. Its your choice to dump it over the mac and cheese or dip them in. There are plenty of flatbreads to satisfy everyone at the table and certainly create a nice discussion about what to order. Overall a great experience.
