We tried a new Mediterranean spot last night and it ended up being a great find. My fiancée ordered the garlic chicken plate with a side of dolmeh and I got the chicken kabob plate. When we first walked in it was very quiet and it definitely had that small mom and pop feel. The food was amazing. The chicken was juicy and packed with flavor, the rice was incredibly good, and the salad with the dressing was fresh and perfectly balanced. My fiancée loved her garlic chicken as well. The real surprise was the dolmeh. I've never really been a big fan, but these were hands down some of the best we've ever had, full of flavor and perfectly made. Before we left the owner came in and was very warm and welcoming. The food impressed us so much that I actually called the restaurant later to thank them. $80 for a plate of rice with steak and chicken chunks, one additional plate with about 7 or 8 chunks of chicken and rice, one tiny side salad, a small side of hummus and 2 baklava. Zero flavor on anything but the baklava. A total waste of money. I'd rather drive out to Pasadena for Zankou! Cheaper, full of flavor, you gets sides. My husband said they told him they have been open for 30 years. How? We won't be going back! Food was almost flavorless and plates were overpriced. Ordered one koobideh plate and one chicken sultani plate (which was to include one skewer of chicken and one skewer of beef koobideh). The owners of this restaurant are absolutely incredible people, I learned persian a few years ago, and these people were the only ones who actually knew it and spoke to me longer than a second; I can tell this restaurant is the authentic persian dining experience from this interaction alone! The food is exactly what you would expect, I got the Qormeh Sabzi and Ash Reshteh, the person I came with, ate Garlic Chicken Kebab and had Garlic Paste, if you have had Qormeh Sabzi before you know what to expect, it was very delicious and had that authentic flavor. The Ash is traditionally a breakfast-y food, it's a stew, it's great to break up the bread and put it in the Ash, eat it with a fork, very good! The Garlic Chicken Kebab is absolutely incredible, I think if that was all I got, it still would be worth a stop just on its own. The atmosphere was relaxed, there were nice decorations of ancient Iranian civilization, stuff you would see on the walls of Persepolis. I came here last week to have their buffet and was very disappointed with the buffet. They only had 2 kabob options, ground beef and chicken thigh. Both we're barley warm you can tell it's been sitting there for awhile. Both were dry. The rice with the ground beef I think and seasoning was good. The waitress was nice. The place was clean. Saturday night takeout was an amazing feast packed with authentic Persian cuisine that rivals the Darya's of Anaheim and Raffi's of Glendale. Upland Kabob, in my book, is the Inland Empire's go to place when craving for this traditional ethnic delight. The pictures really don't give justice to the dining pleasure our family had. They packaged the chicken and koubideh in an aluminum container. While we were waiting for our daughter to pickup the food, we fired up our oven to 500F, prepared our own raw red onions with sumac and warmed butter ready for our pita bread, I also scooped some hummus from our stash and drizzled it with extra virgin olive oil (colavita) and sweet paprika. We had the ingredients for shirazi salad at home so we made our own as well with fresh mint from our garden. When we were all ready to devour our feast with our rice warmed up and ready, I stuck in the aluminum container in the oven for 8 minutes with the lid detached and placed loosely over to protect the meat from over heating. Chicken Barg was so juicy and tender!! The garlic paste elevated the taste to a "shake your head" approval. Koubideh was succulent and firm!! Squeezed a dash of lemon juice and a slice of roasted tomato for acidity with the fluffy lubia polo and wow - truly a foodies delight. Fessenjan - I ate this after the Koubideh and chicken Barg. This was just unexpected. For years, I've had to travel to other Persian restaurants when I had a craving. So I wasn't expecting this from a restaurant that I chose since my daughter was close by. What a valuable gem this place is. The quality of their fessenjan exceeded my expectations. The pomegranate and walnuts were just the right mix to complement the chicken. The sauce with the fluffy basmati was a marriage made in heaven. Baklava - there was still some heat in our oven so we put it in for 5 minutes to warm it up and get the nut oils to melt into the pastry while we were making our mint tea. Oh yeah- there was no better way to cap our evening. Even the Baklava was good. To the staff who were generous in their servings. Every penny was worth it. I work hard so I appreciate the people who work hard to deliver a product. Everything was cleanly packed and you can tell attention to detail is what Upland Kabob has and not to mention the kind phone order taker and maitre d' who was very hospitable while my daughter was waiting for the takeout. Oh my gosh, that garlic sauce! We ordered chicken and steak (kabob barg) and hummus and the portions are huge and delicious. Even the side salads were delicious! Hubby and I had some of the best Mediterranean food at this place. The atmosphere was homey and the service was welcoming. We felt such a part of the family. We really enjoyed the music that was playing as well. We like to eat family style when we got to places like this. We ordered 3 items with the expectation of having leftovers. We orders a steak and chicken tender combo, salmon, and chicken and beef koubideh (ground meat). Each plate came with basmati rice and a fresh green salad. I don't know what kind of dressing they put on the salad but it is amazing. I am a big connoisseur of hummus. I love a good hummus with plenty of garlic. Their hummus, it is not filled with garlic, it is not oily, the hummus is so delicious we couldn't stop eating it with the warm bread that came with it. We have passed this restaurant several times and finally decided to try it for lunch. There is a parking lot infront. I ordered the Koubideh lunch special which included white rice and salad and all came in a platter. My companion had the Chicken Sultani which also included white rice and salad, all in a platter. It was very disappointing that our orders did not come with any dip, hummus and pita. We often dine at very similar restaurants and this was the first time we've experienced being served a meal without the most basic condiments. So, I had to order the yogurt-cucumber-mint dip (see menu). As far as taste, our meals were just okay. We've definitely had better elsewhere. read more

I've been to many Persian restaurants. Persian food is my absolute favorite. Unfortunately UPLAND KABOB on Mountain left much to be desired. In addition to the high price, the meat was dry, the rice was not what I expected or had before. All Persian restaurants give you greens, onion and pita bread to go with your meal, this place did not, cheapskates! Not even a slice of pita bread! Another thing is I ordered a certain side dish and when I got there I was told they didn't have it prepared and that if I wanted to wait 20 more minutes! It took me 25 mins to get there. They could have prepared it and had it ready to go. I DO NOT recommend this restaurant at all. The best place is RAFFI'S on Broadway in Glendale. Now that is great food! Hubby and I had dinner here last night finally after passing this place a hundred times on Mountain Avenue. I was drawn in as the sign states "Buffet" and "All You Can Eat" only to be disappointment when the employee shared that the buffet is only open during minimal hours M-F. We are trying to support more local business and opted to stay for dinner. While the food was pretty good, the bill was close to $60 for both of us (including tip). Portion sizes are hearty and everything tasted fresh. The employee who helped us was friendly but lacked basic restaurant customer service skills. We had to continue to ask for refills on our iced tea (which was actually pretty delicious though) even after he'd come to our table to bring us more pita bread (which is apparently not complimentary once you get your meal as we were charged for it without notice). The place is definitely run down and parking is limited in front. I would come back to possibly try the buffet when I'm craving Persian food but you shouldn't expect over the top service.
