So we ordered a pizza for pickup on Halloween, and it was so packed that our pizza took an extra 30 minutes. I wasn't happy, but their manager (I think his name is Mali) offered us a free pizza on our next visit. Not sure whether he'd stick to his word, we called in tonight to collect. Mali actually answered the phone, remembered who we were, and gave us a pizza on the house. Restaurants screw up sometimes, but it's nice to know that they make an effort to keep their customers happy. BTW - we've tried several pizza places in the South End and we think this is the best. One employee told my 8.5 months pregnant wife that they would deliver a pizza when she used her groupon to buy it. When she went there in person another employee refused, told her she had to carry it (at 36 weeks!), and was rude to her. Unacceptable by any standard. wow, great pizzz here made just the way i like it (thin and crispy) but this place is run by ppl who just dont give a damn. we walk in, greeted right away to be helped. we had to take a few minutes as to what kind of toppings we wanted. the guy disappears, we are standing by the register for a few minutes or 5 and the girl behind the counter is on the phone , looks at us but does not say a word, all she is worried about are the damn phone lines and how all 4 lines are lit up! she yells for one of the cooks to find mike or whatever his name is , hes outside smoking a butt. he takes our order finally as more ppl shuffle in. this lady came in 10 mins after us but got her pizza first! WTF! i look up and see our pizza cuz it has our name on the box. we walk up and guy plays like dumb. oh yeh, heres you pizza. hmm how long has it been done? it was still piping hot tho , so that was good. the pizza was great but it sure doesnt fill you up and we ordered a large! this location is nice and bigger than newbury st but man, it should be run by ppl who are a ltitle more attentive. read more

Tonight's lesson learned: If you have your wallet in your back pants pocket and there is a button, button it! I didn't, but fortunately Ollie at The Upper Crust found it on the street, found my phone number in my wallet, and called me. Fortunately everything was still in the wallet. The new owner of this place is the best! He's extremely generous, and goes out of his way to deliver great service and delicious pizza. As we live in the neighborhood, we often stop past the place to see what the SOD of SOM is. The staff always smiles and says hello, but the owner has invited us in for free samples mutliple times. If we wait longer than expected, same thing. I had called in a special order once, and it was slightly wrong-not only did they remake it, they made it into a large (because who doesn't love extra pizza), and gave me both pizzas to take home-no extra charge. They are just genuine staff, serving awesome pizza, with fresh ingredients. Even if you aren't a pizza lover (and who isn't), the service here will make you want to keep supporting them. read more

When I used to live in Coolidge Corner, I ordered from the Upper Crust all the time and they never dissappointed. Delicious. I love the Harvard Street with a bunch of basil....mmmm. I was so excited when this Upper Crust location moved into the South End -- just what we needed around here. I ordered from them once, and was dissappointed to see that my pie arrived folded over onto itself with cheese all over the place. As a result I enjoyed half a pizza with cheese, the other half with none. But I wrote that off. I ordered from them again, and did takout this time versus delivery. This time, my Hingham pizza was pretty darn skimpy on the scallops (but at least it was flat and not folded over). I ordered from them for the third time last week, writing off the first two experiences, and my large pizza arrived, filling only about 2/3 of the box. Those were some small pieces of pizza for what we paid and it was pretty clear it was not a full large size from the excess cardboard around the edges of the box. So that is three times where I have been dissappointed. The third time I had guests and it was a shame because I felt like I had talked up the Upper Crust and then we didn't have quite enough food to feel comfortably full. I feel like this Upper Crust location needs to up the ante on the quality of pizza they are distributing. I know they can do better!! And I want them to! But in the meantime, three strikes and you're out, so next time I'm ordering from Mangia. read more

Never wrote a review before but this annoyed me. Tried to order a pizza, but never happened. The guy answered the phone started taking my order. He then put me in hold in the middle, and answered other calls and took their orders. Came back to me I said two words and was out in hold again. After about the 10 minute mark I hung up. Love this neighborhood location! Mali is an excellent manager, and really goes out of his way to give back to the community. Our kids were able to have a delicious pizza party during Winter Break, and it wouldn't have been possible without Mali and his staff. Pizza ain't cheap, but Mali made it doable! I don't usually have a bad pizza delivered from here. I order the same every time. If you order extra cheese...beware. Apparently it can't be cooked. So I paid for it but did not receive it. When I called to inquire why there was barely cheese, I was passed to the management who had no issue telling me that my pizza could not be made with extra cheese. I have been to other Upper Crusts' but never to the one on Tremont Street. I just moved to the South End so I thought I would try it and it was honestly one of the worst pizzas I've ever had. One of the things I like about upper crust is the thin crust, but this crust was rolled out so thin I don't know how anything could even stay on it. There was barely any sauce on it, and I had ordered pineapple on top. They put about one tiny piece of pineapple per slice, I don't know how anybody who makes pizza would think that that's adequate. If you order a topping on a pizza usually want to be able to taste the topping. I was very disappointed for the $25 pizza I just paid for. I really want to love this place. The service is horrible, they're either very rude or not very smart depending on who you get. Sometimes you get a very sorry helping of a topping. But one time takes the cake...I ordered their Hawaiian, picked it up and when I got home discovered they had ripped off a partial piece (how I have know idea), and threw a bunch of ham on it to look like it was actual pizza. Oh my goodness. This place was amazing. The menu ranged from cheese pizza, perfect for kids, to the Gepetto's, with squash, cucumber, and many other veggies sure to please. The ambience you get from the restaurant is upbeat, and the pizza plates on the ceiling are a fun twist on regular decorations. We came in here starving after a day of traveling and eating nothing but peanuts on airplanes. This hit the spot and the pizza was magnificent. I used to like their pizza a lot, not the best in the area, Picco defiantly wins that prize hands down but very good. So if I only want a slice, I head for Upper C, if I'm with a friend, or desire more than a slice, I head to Piccos. But no longer, the "new, reopened" upper crust has replaced cheese and sauce with what must be a cheaper version. Why buy a successful pizza shop, closed for poor managment, and change the concept? I won't try it again, when I want pizza, it's Piccos or none. Yes, much pricier so I'll enjoy pizza less often, I can deal. read more

My husband and I used to come here at least once a week, but after our last few experiences we probably won't be stopping by much (which is a shame because we live around the corner!) Service sometimes is great - one girl greets us each week by name and rings up our lunch order without us even having to say it! (Two slices of cheese and one SOD to take home, no matter what it is its always good which is why I couldnt just give one star.) However, a couple weeks ago we came in and watched what we thought was a very rude customer sit at the bar, eat two of those small calzones and a slice of pizza, and complain about his day. He ordered the girl working to get him slice of pizza, cursed ALOT (and there were kids and families in the store), and moaned and groaned for the hour we were there. The girl working was running around the store, wiping down the tables and helping customers, and brought my husband and i each new beers - all the while the rude customer continued sitting at the bar and talking on his cell phone. But then to our surprise he got up and walked behind the counter. We realized he was an employee! I dont know if he was just starting his shift or what, but he never got up to help any customers even though the other girl was running around. Which I guess explained why the girl wasn't like "get up and help me" which is what she shouldve done. The next two times I have come in alone during the day, the same guy was working by himself. Both times, he was sitting on a chair while he took my order, yelled at a cook to put my slice in the oven and then again to get it out and hand it to me, and never got up off the chair, even when I sat at a dirty table (all of the tables were dirty even though there was only one other person there) then he was on the phone with someone talking about "his store" and saying that he has the best upper crust. I wonder is he the boss?? He also dresses inappropriately, he is a very large guy and both times wears white tank tops and athletic shorts, you would never suspect he is working there if you didnt know. All in all, the pizza is very good but the prices keep going up and some people working there are very unhelpful and rude. read more

But I do have to say after all the time I have been going to the South End Upper Crust I was very pleased with my order on Friday night. In the old company the staff was not very pleasant when I was trying to talk to them about the stuff I heard in the papers. But I met the guy who I later found out was the manager was very open to talking about the new management that had taken over. I spoke to the guy for nearly fifteen minutes in which time he had told me about the zoo event that was happening in August. This was the first time I had heard anything about it.
