Poor service and not good whole wheat pizza. Want a good whole wheat, dairy-free, or vegan pizza - don't go here. Got whole wheat, veggie, no cheese. I like pizza well done, but this was burnt. Cracker like. Light on toppings. And notice how the peppers are dumped in the middle. Place was empty when I went in and was told 10 min for a pizza. Took 30, and I was told it was going to be a couple more minutes when I told them, no, that I was taking the pizza now. Imagine how burnt it would've been after two more minutes? The manager on duty offered me a beer at one point and then proactively credited me when I asked what was going on. Apparently cook had missed the ticket. Had the pizza been good it would've made up for the experience. Total letdown. I have no idea why there was ever any hype about this place. I give it two vs one star only because the manager did the right thing. read more

The pizza is good, often over seasoned though. I would give them a much higher score if not for their staff!!! Whenever I go in person to get pizza they are helpful enough and I have no problems. Every time I have phone called them I have been yelled at on the phone and treated rudely. First time ordering pizza via phone we asked if they had bread sticks, which I was thoroughly reprimanded for even asking if they sell something other than pizza. My friends have been yelled at by them on the phone for a question as well. Tonight I had mis-read my groupon, the delivery man had me call the store so I could get YELLED AT by them that it is not valid on delivery, he said he called me twice to tell me(Which he most certainly had not) and he just kept yelling at me till I hung up on him. I don't think I will order delivery from them again, walking by to get a slice- fine. But every phone interaction ends with them treating me like garbage and it seems I'm not the only one. read more

Upper Crust definitely makes an effort to set themselves one bar above the rest. And in some aspects they do... it feels cleaner in here than most pizza spots. The menu options are creative, and exciting. And their prices...well, hello. This IS pizza guys. I won't say it's not good, because it is. I am a fan of getting delivery from this location. I am surprised to see such negative reviews. Everytime that I have ordered delivery, it has gotten to my place before the allotted time that seamless gives. Most importantly, the pizza is always great and the service is fine. Three reasons for the 1 star rating: 1) The person working the register was very rude - both on the phone when we called to make an order - and in person when we went to pick up our pizza. 2) They messed up our order so we had to wait double the time that was first quoted to us. 3) As I sat and waited for our already messed up order, I watched the person making the pizza grab his cell phone while adding pizza toppings. in my experience in boston, the good pizza here is seriously lacking. however neil took me to this place called The Upper Crust which was very similar to Posto or Gnocco in NYC. Thin crust, great toppings, cooked crispy. I was pleased. I was happy. They offer slices in plain, pepperoni or slice of the day. The slice of the day happened to be chicken, bacon and onion. hello? yes. i asked to see the slice, and it was the size of 2 slices in upscale nyc places. I was happy again. Neil and I split a slice for $3.50, and it was exactly how i thought it would be. It's hard for me to give 5 stars to a pizza place, let alone one in which I only eat a slice, but this has 4.5 star potential. especially when i checked out the menu and they had 4 seafood pies that sounded phenomenal. read more

Okay so maybe they were screwing their employees over before but atleast they were friendly.........I've been in there a few times since the change of ownership and I can't get over how rude these guys are. Don't expect any sort of acknowledgement when you walk in. These guys are too busy talking to each other or on their phones. Feel free to stand at the register and not be noticed as well. When they finally do notice you it's one word answers and zero eye contact. They aren't American not sure from where....but just ignorant euro trash with no manners or social skills. I have to agree with many of the recent reviews - this place has gone downhill significantly. Perhaps they have opted for cheaper ingredients from their vendor to increase margins (which is crazy, as we're talking about pizza here), but whatever the cause their product is not the same. I stopped by recently and picked up a prosciutto pie, hoping that these recent Yelpers were wrong. It was pretty devoid of any of the spicy deliciousness that I had come to know and love in years past from TUC. Unfortunately, I could have eaten the box and been as satisfied. Bankruptcies and new ownership notwithstanding, these guys need to return to their original formula, the one that made them so popular in the first place. read more

We ordered delivery here on the way back from Thanksgiving weekend. We called ahead so it would be there when we got home. They called once I got home and said that they are giving us a free pizza b/c the driver had too many stops and our pizza got cold so they are making a fresh one and sending it over. When they showed up we got a free pizza, they forgot about the salad we ordered but that is fine and also said we will get a gift cert in the mail for all the trouble. I actually did get the gift card, $20 to be exact. I find their customer service was great, I undestand sometimes deleivery drivers have too many orders in too many directions to fulfill so I appreciated the extra step they went to make us happy. The food however, is lacking. This was our second time ordering from Upper Crust and as much as I want to like this pizza I just don't see what is so special about it. It usually is on the dry side and lacking flavor. I wouldn't reccomend the food, but the people were great. read more

My husband and I have been Boston residents for 5 years and have been loyal upper crust customers. The manager at this location is a disgrace to the company. Mali at the South End location told me to "shut up" over the weekend and accused me of being a scam because we've had a couple of occasions that the pizza I had requested gluten free had actually arrived not gluten free. He said he would not deliver to my address because he thought our family was scamming him. Never once did I ask for a free item or request my money back, only that we have the correct pizza delivered. I have stressed that we are happy to return the not gluten free pizza as I cannot eat it, and that we only want to receive what we have actually ordered. I have sent an escalation to corporate but want the public to know about Mali and the frequent mistakes this location makes for such an important specification. Be careful if you have a sensitivity to gluten, more than once our pizza has arrived NOT gluten free and then Mali who unfortunately my husband and I have had to deal with on more than one occasion does not listen and discriminates against people with gluten intolerance. Never have I spoke with someone more ignorant and impatient as this man. He actually refused to deliver to us because of my gluten intolerance and concerns for the repeated mistakes that are being made. I am disgusted with how he has treated us on more than one occasion when all we have done was try to ensure we've received the correct order. We never once had an issue with the Charles street location. If you live in the Back Bay, do yourself a favor and order from the Charles Street location. They will deliver to you and actually care about the quality of service you receive. read more

I work relatively close to the Upper Crust, but the convenience of delivery is a great asset to the already amazing pizza! I order from them often, as I work with numerous hungry male barbers. EACH time the pizza arrives warm and with a delivery guy that is always pleasant. The ordering process is always easy and the employees have a pleasant phone manner. Just called tremont st location and ordered the usual pizza and ceasar salad the person on the phone told me there is a charge for anchovies for the salad. I asked if that was new he said no. I like the pizza at Upper Crust, but living in the South End, the delivery from Back Bay almost always took an hour - I chalked it up to being at the edge of their delivery range. So I was excited when they opened a location in my neighborhood - surely the delivery would be faster, right? I ordered for the first time tonight and was told it would be between 35 - 45 minutes, which as it was Saturday night seemed totally reasonable. An hour later I call to ask if the pizza is on its way and am told that I shouldn't have expected it under an hour as they had been "super busy" earlier - then why the hell was I told less time?! An hour and ten minutes after I ordered, the pizza arrives - and they've put the wrong ingredients on. I asked for bell peppers and instead they slathered it with hot peppers. If I had only said peppers when ordering I'd cut them some slack but I specifically said bell peppers to avoid just this problem. When I called to complain they reluctantly offered to send me another pizza in 30 minutes - um, right - or give me a credit for a free pizza at another time. Great. I'll make sure to plan ahead well in advance of when I'd ACTUALLY like to eat to place my next order. I'll also add that something similar happened once with the Back Bay location, except that time they switched my order with another persons. I've come to realize that location has nothing to do with it - these people just suck at organizing a business that can make and deliver pizza in under an hour. What can I say, we love the upper crust. Great thin crust pizza....honestly never ordered anything here that didn't meet our expectations. For a quick meal, it's on point. I absolutely love the delivery guys too....come on, they deliver your pizza on a bike! How cute is that? I always feel bad having it delivered though, like it's the utmost laziness (I'm too tired to cook and hey, why don't you peddle on over here to drop it off for me too). I really wanted to like this pizza! I've been on the lookout for a good buffalo chicken pizza. I'm not super picky (I like Papa John's pizza!). All I wanted was a good balance between chicken, buffalo sauce, and cheese (I also prefer some sort of white-based sauce-ranch or blue cheese). I tried Upper Crust's "Big Steve's Buffalo." It sounded like the perfect combination for me: "a white pizza with breaded chicken tossed in buffalo sauce and blue cheese." Simple, right? How can you possibly mess this up? Well, Upper Crust manage to do it: 1) waaaaaay too much sauce! cheese was just floating on top of a sea of red, 2) as a consequence, pizza was just too salty, couldn't eat more than a slice, 3) the crust just doesn't work: not crispy enough for a thin crust, too chewy in the middle and upper edges are burned, 4) can barely taste the chicken, only 2-3 half-inch cubes per slice, 5) could not taste a trace of blue cheese, 6) for me, this pizza was a bit overpriced $18 for a small. I got carry-out, so I can't comment on rate of delivery, etc, but I came at the designated pick-up time and my order was ready so no complaints there. I live in the area, so this was really incredibly disappointing. I would've ordered here all the time if it was worth it. Unfortunately, it's not. Not even for a late-night craving. Save your money and try New York Pizza (not a fan of their buffalo chicken, but other varieties are good). read more

Although the people taking the orders and cooking the pizza dont really have a smile on their face, but they werent rude either. I can smell the scent of the delicious pizza from outside this store. I have to admit their pizza were really delicious when i went there. They also have a huge variety of pizzas you can order. One thing i dont really like about this place is how its more expensive than the other pizza stores around the city. However, if you want some higher quality pizza then come here and give it a try. I've lived in this neighborhood for two and a half years and the first local food stop I went to was Upper Crust. Their crust is what keeps me coming back for more. Because of Upper Crust I refuse to go to any other pizza stop (it's not just loyality either- the pizza is BOMB! Try their BBQ chicken) On one particular night, I ordered my pizza, paid for it and dropped my wallet with over 1,000.00 cash in it. The next day I called Upper Crust and found that they had my wallet. Mali saw to it that he kept it safe. He didn't even know my name nor did he have to do this for me. This place is honest and they put their BEST in every pizza slice/ every pizza you order. If I could give more stars I would! read more

We tried the Upper Crust last night, particularly because it's under new management. We used to like their pizzas and ate there numerous times. This time we were not happy campers. It felt like it turned into a regular old pizza joint, rather than a place to go for a good pizza. The personnel weren't professional; some appeared untrained; the focus on customers was nil.
