Uptowner is a neighborhood cafe that has a good variation in their selection of "quick eats". Literally. If you are in a rush, there will be SOMETHING in uptowner that will tickle your fancy...and quickly. This cafe offers an entire wall of refrigerated drinks ranging from aloe drinks, juices, canned sodas, and bottled water. Next to their large selection of drinks, there is a salad bar that is $7.45 per pound. If you just need a quick snack, they also have a notable selection of power bars, chips, gum, and candy. I say notable because the brands they offer are more geared toward my preferences: For example, uptowner carries Pop chips and Kettle chips. Whereas other delis sell Doritos and Fritos. Get my drift? In their deli, they offer a good selection of sandwiches for both breakfast and lunch. For breakfast, you can have your choice of pastry, egg sandwich, omelet, or simply a bagel and creme cheese. I cannot speak to their lunch selection yet, but I will update this review once I do! In addition to their fast service and great options to choose from, there is outdoor seating for dog owners, and a few tables inside for those cooler fall/winter days. I stopped by to grab a quick pastry on my way to work this morning. I've always seen so many visitors (mostly tourists), so I figured why not? There was no line going in. Great. I asked for the chocolate croissant, which appeared fresh. I got to work and heated the croissant for just under 30 seconds. Note: I always do this with Starbucks's croissant and have never ran across an issue. When I got back to my desk and took a bite of my pastry, I instantly regretted my decision for not sticking to my Starbucks croissant. One word to describe Uptowner Cafe's croissant is stale. I definitely wouldn't recommend any pastry from the shop after this experience. Perhaps their coffee is better, I wouldn't know. read more

We grabbed breakfast and snacks for two adults and two kids on our way out of town for a long drive. There were lots of options for everyone. The adults had egg sandwiches and the kids had a bagel and a muffin. Everyone was very happy with their respective choices. We also got a really nice fruit bowl, drinks, coffee, candy, etc. I saw yogurt, apples, bananas and lots of other choices both healthy and not-so-healthy. The staff was very friendly and efficient. My wife and I wanted a cheap and quick breakfast Sunday morning and this was about the only spot we could find near the high end Westin, Ritz Carlton, Park Hyatt area. I got the sausage, egg, and cheese bagel which was good for around $5. My wife got an omelet, which was very disappointing. It was clearly overcooked - brown on the outside - and yet the cook plated it anyway and the counter guy gave it to us. So, do they not know what an overcooked omelet looks like or did they think we wouldn't care? I would come back if I was in the same dire circumstances, but before I did that I would definitely try to find an alternative locale. read more

Walked in this place today to buy two juices and two sandwiches, the guy behind the counter who I think is the manager, didn't seem to want to take my order, so I go over to the cashier and give her my order and even paid for my sandwiches and two juices, and she didn't give him my order, so I have walk back over to give another woman who came from the back. All three of these individuals seemed upset or angry about something, not sure. But the service was very poor and all three of their attitudes were very poor, the FOOD WAS AVERAGE AT BEST. I will not be returning to this place again due to poor service, poorer attitudes and average food. read more

The breakfast food looked amazing and the chocolate chip cookie I had was delicious. However I was BEYOND disappointed with their hot chocolate. They literally took 2 packs of instant Swiss mix and poured some hot water into a cup. This is something I could've done at home! I felt I was ripped off and I was expecting higher standards. Their strength is in sandwiches, all served with fresh ingrediants. You can see the big turkey and chicken freshly cooked as it is cut for sandwiches. Try the Club Sandwich, the Potomac, and the Western omelet. The service is good, although the tables should be wiped clean more often. This is a small deli and a place for a quick meal, but I became attached imediately. Table wiping aside, the place is clean. The salad bar is the weakest link - often empty and doesn't offer much, except for fruit, eggs and some lettuce, but the tasty sandwiches more than make up for things. This is a nice deli around the corner from my office so convenience is a bonus. But that isn't all... The menu has everything from fresh turkey to smoked ham, tofu and grilled chicken breast. I have tried their Asian wrap (teriyaki, sesame oil, grilled onions, lettuce grilled chicken in a spinach wrap) and it was yummy even though was suppose to be seasoned tofu eeeeww lol... The steak and cheese was to die for! And they have a great little salad, fruit and pasta bar that is always fresh. For you carb junkies... Muffins, doughnuts and other baked goods, Chips, snacks, drinks, jerky, bottled water tables, patio tables, about all you need... To escape the stress of the office for a half hour... Wide variety of sodas, water and teas. Buffet with assorted salads and sushi. Never tried the sushi, but it always appeared to be fresh. Uptowner is super close to my office and not only do I regular for a sausage egg and cheese on an everything bagel (or maybe bacon or maybe on a croissant) every now and then - but it's also got solid lunch options. I've been here twice for breakfast and dinner. Both were enjoyable. The family that works there seems like a hardworking family. Working from 6 in the morning to 9 at night. Prices are good and the food is good. It's not out of this world phenomenal, but it's tasty and the prices aren't too bad. Tried the mozzarella, tomato with an aioli I believe, it was alright. Simple, but not super tastebud thrilling. Also had a chicken sandwich, believe it was the Santa Fe, which was actually really good. The place gets a little hectic during the morning rush and it gets confusing when you've got people ordering breakfast and some people just grabbing a water and apple to go, but it's cheap and quaint. It's less than a block from my office, but just doesn't do it for me. I've been here a couple times thinking it'll take me back to NYC days of bagels and coffee, but it's just not happening. The staff is polite and the service is relatively efficient, but having a stale bagel at 8am one day and then overpaying for what looked like two ounces of lukewarm salmon on another doesn't work for me. In a pinch, it's convenient, but I feel like I'm better off keeping a supply in the office fridge. read more

I have to give this place 5 stars purely because I go here daily. I love the owner and I'm allowed to bring my dog in with me which is awesome. I practically live on their egg and cheese sandwiches and love the coffee. Great way to wake up to the day! I came in here for one of their giant cookies. I am always drooling over my co-worker's cookie every week. I swear she buys 2-3 a week! The cookies are right by the cash register. I got the oatmeal raisin and my review is about the cookie. First I was disappointed that it costed $2! Now, it was a big cookie but seriously $2 bucks? Anyway, the cookie had hard edges but everywhere else it was chewy and soft. I loved it but $2 bucks is a little steep. 3.5 stars I stayed at the Westin for a couple of nights and needed a good hangover breakfast/brunch after an epic night on the town. The Uptowner was right across the street, score! The Uptowner is a deli market sort of place. They had an abundance of packaged munchies for sale as well as a variety of bottled drinks and a salad bar. Very cool. The all the sandwiches and deli items looked pretty good but we were in the mood for some breakfast. We ended up getting the veggie egg croissant sandwich which was delicious but too small and pricey. (The reason I docked a star and a half) I loved the fact that they make the omelet fresh and right in front of you. They are a little stingy when it comes to toppings though. I bought a Naked smoothie drink, two sandwiches, and a cookie which came out to $26ish...outrageously pricey. The Uptowner has some good stuff but should seriously consider lowering their prices or making their sandwiches larger. read more

Poor service and high prices...typical of an establishment predominately serving students. A great subway nearby...quick food, cheaper price...and tastier. It's a no-brainer. The line cooks and the cashier just don't pay attention. The line moves slow. People just stand around. The staff makes mistakes. It's a general "couldn't care less" attitude that you won't get at a more established cafe like Subway. Oh, and there's a mean note at the salad bar that says something like "pay for your salad dressing--there's no 'free lunch.'" I think that kind of rudeness typifies the service philosophy at this place. (And yes, dressing should come with salad. Who eats dry salad?) read more
