We sat outside at the tables with umbrellas and cushioned chairs provided by Urban Matcha ( it was full inside, and the music was too loud for my taste ), surrounded by planters with colorful flowers. We bought sushi at nearby Akemi sushi from the Marketplace, and we had an fast al fresco lunch. Everything was delicious. I warned my granddaughter the matcha latte might be bitter since it was a darker green than her usual Starbucks, but she said no, it is not bitter, she really enjoyed it. I had the matcha parfait, which had a layer of matcha cake, red beans, corn flakes and star jelly. I didn't realize corn flakes tasted so good with matcha soft serve!! My son had thé matcha latte with strawberry cheese cloud. Very good too! Since I go to the Marketplace very often for my groceries and the butcher shop there, I am sure I will be visiting Urban Matcha often. I'll get straight to the point, it's by far one of the best matcha places I've had so far, and I'm so grateful they opened close by. I've been to their soft opening twice so far. First, Friday night around 8-9. Can I just say I appreciate them extending their soft opening hours to 12-10pm on Fri-Sat cuz I'm tired of places closing at 8 or 9. This is probably a personal preference, but need me more places that close late as 10, and there's not many of those in Castro Valley. The line wasn't as long as it was in the afternoon, so prefer going night. I recommend going around evening time if you wanna avoid the crowds. Line was still out the door but it goes by fast bc our wait time for our drinks was also less than 10mins, VERY IMPRESSIVE! We got the banana pudding matcha and matcha yuzu sparkler. We made adjustments to the banana pudding matcha but couldn't make adjustments to the sparkler. If you happen to stumble upon this place and are contemplating the sparkler drinks, I say go for it bc it would change ur life like it did mine lol. Banana pudding matcha is also a must bc I downed that one in less than 10mins...I'm not usually a chugger but that drink made me one that night. Second time we went, which was past 9:30, line was still kinda out the door but like I said, it goes by fast and I think they were prepared for that so props to them. Our wait time was a little longer cuz I think there was an issue when we ordered the matcha lemon float. I probably wouldn't get the float again but glad it's a category on the menu. The soft serve was perfect no complaints and prob best I got to try it from the float cuz I prob wouldn't be able to finish it lol. We also got another sparkler drink, and this time the matcha lychee sparkler. My partner liked the matcha yuzu sparkler over the matcha lychee sparkler. I took my daughter here as soon as the place was open for the day and by the time I walked inside, there were at least 10 customers ahead of me. When it was my turn to order, I wanted the black sesame soft serve but it wasn't available so I ended up getting the matcha soft serve, matcha & vanilla swirl soft serve, and the matcha latte. Our order did take a while to be ready. Since we live 30 minutes away, my daughter and I, decided to eat our ice cream at the store. I, initially enjoyed the flavor of the matcha soft serve. It was smooth with the perfect amount of matcha flavor. Unfortunately, the more I ate it, I could taste unmixed chunks of matcha paste within the ice cream and after a few bites, my daughter and I, noticed a hollow hole in the middle of the ice cream that goes all the way down to the bottom of the cup. As for the matcha latte, the color is there but the matcha flavor was too "light". The cashier that assisted me, didn't provide much customer service. When I tried to order the black sesame soft serve, she told me that they don't have it. I asked her when it'll be available and she said she doesn't know. She didn't even elaborate on why they don't have it (whether the machine was broken, not enough ingredients...nothing). Then when she started calling out people's names to pick up their order, you can barely hear her. Matcha soft serve was good on flavor and texture. Got a matcha yuzu sparkler-ok, matcha float-3/4 cup of ice and very little liquid, matcha vanilla soft serve cone, and black sesame/ube soft serve cone. My wait was less than 10 minutes which is incredibly fast compared to other matcha places around the bay. Price-wise is cheaper than most places. I've tried 2 drinks here and the parfait and I must say they're pretty decent for the East Bay. It's about time the east bay had a decent matcha spot around this area. Went on the second day of their soft opening. The line was long, but not terrible. Just outside the front door, a bit. By the time we left, it was back to the side patio. Everyone was super friendly, and everyone was working very hard. We ordered Matcha Lattes with strawberry cheese cap and a Matcha Latte Banana pudding. Both were really good! The wait time wasn't bad for how busy they were. I would say we were there for about 45 minutes from getting in line to getting our drinks. The ube and black sesame combination was absolutely amazing--creamy, flavorful, and perfectly balanced without being overly sweet. My friend chose Ube & Black Sesame Softserve and I picked the Matcha Parfait - agar jelly, cornflakes, matcha gelato, adzuki bean, 2 mochi balls, 1 chestnut with any soft serve flavor. I picked Matcha & Vanilla twist. I liked the layered approach. I was surprised that the parfait had some cake in it and a little bummed that the softserve was wide loops and a hollow middle. The seating is limited for the big crowds and it feels a bit claustrophobic since the tables are about 1 foot apart. Fortunately, we found cozy window seats in the corner. We'll be back. The interior is modern, clean and has a few small tables, a long bar sitting area, and window seating with big cushy pillows. I wanted to provide an update with a recent observation. It seems their foams have changed. What previously was a smooth rich in flavor foam is now a thick cream based scoop. A very welcome to Urban Matcha, finally occupying the old Wend's location. Just popped in on their soft opening, tried their matcha parfait, matcha cream latte, and a matcha float. To start, I believe the matcha quality is pretty standard for a chain, matching the same level of consistency as matcha love or similar. Their soft serve tastes a little better than their matcha latte, and the parfait was sort of a "not too sweet" kinda dessert for me (IYKYK). Service was surprisingly quick to take orders, very friendly, especially surprising for a first day. I can't say there's much tweaking to do to get it up and running, it seems pretty good already. Wow - for a soft opening, they have their logistics figured out! Pretty busy on their first day open, but everything coming out is of high quality. Everything seems consistent (soft served comes out instagram worthy), and the cafe is so clean! We ordered a matcha latte with a strawberry cheese cap and a matcha yuzu. Both are a 10/10.
