Hmm another matcha cafe... I really want to like this place but I just found the drinks too watery. Maybe just the batch today or something but my matcha kuromitsu and matcha cream latte tasted like watered down matcha. Service: fast Ambiance, busy and spacious

Urban Matcha opened recently in vacated space where Wend's Cafe once was. Across from Castro Valley Marketplace, parking is available in back if any can be found. Stripped lanes stingy narrow, making entering/exiting vehicles a tight fit. One reason to park elsewhere. Outside & inside seating mostly taken post noon. Line to order stretches to door. Line moves Quickly, orders filled fast too. Couple of minutes. Hot drinks not available. Offerings: matcha soft serve/parfait/shaved rice, Uji kinoki, frappe, banana pudding matcha, yuzu/tea/coffee/cheese cap/float selection, matcha latte Sips: matcha latte (L. 6.95+tax) -surprisingly deliz, lots of matcha flavorness, not bitter. Obviously sugared. Better than most renditions. Pricier too. 4.7 stars worthy!! Service: great! Quality: Phenom! Quantity: reasonable . Parking lot only reason not to return.

I've been here twice now. The line has been consistently long between 3 and 6 pm during opening week--seems like people are coming from out of town which is good for business. The line moves fairly quickly, I believe in part due to how quickly one can make a latte or put soft serve in a cup as opposed to having to cook or make a meal. The best thing about the items here is they aren't too sweet. The matcha soft serve is a very strong matcha flavor, the black sesame has a black sesame flavor though not as strong as expected, and the ube really tastes quite strongly of ube with that classic slightly savory taste to it. Though they do not offer matcha-ube or matcha-sesame swirl soft serve, you can ask for half and half in a cup or cone and it'll just be a top-bottom split instead of a swirl. The prices aren't too high but they are on the high side. Lots of seating inside and out. They play pretty loud music inside.

Very streamlined operations for the soft opening. Lines out the door, but it keeps moving! Great matcha and hochicha lattes, and soft serve; this could join the list of my top matcha spots!

I've come here 3x now and already can't wait til I'm back. Line is usually long but moves quickly. Their matcha soft serve is a nice treat; I had it with the vanilla and once without. I prefer it without the vanilla soft serve since it made it a little sweeter but I think they're both delicious either way Their matcha is really good but I prefer the hojicha latte. Either way you can't go wrong... they do not skimp you on matcha or hojicha.

By far the best I've had in the Castro Valley & Hayward area. I true spot that specializes in matcha and not just having matcha in their menu. Service was quick and simple. I went during their soft opening week. They were fully staffed and wait-time was really quick! They had bids lined but got the drinks out very quick. The inside is very nice, super modern and aesthetic. I ordered their creamy banana pudding matcha, it was quite delicious and will definitely be coming back whenever I'm in the area! My only complaint is the price. I almost paid 10 dollars for a single Large beverage. Nonetheless the drink was very good and would recommend to friends and family. Overall I give this matcha establishment a solid 4/5 star review! Definitely my go to spot for matcha in Castro Valley! Definitely will be back to try the matcha soft-serve and shaved ice!

I've had this twice and I am delighted each time with what I get. I can't wait to go back and try some more. The first time I tried a yuzu matcha because I wasn't feeling like drinking anything milky that day and it was pretty refreshing. It was interesting but I can't say I loved it and would order this again. I will say the matcha quality was definitely there it! Today I came back for a black sesame cream top matcha and the original cream top hojicha both small with no modifications. I really liked the sesame cream top but it really overpowered the matcha. But again the cream top itself was so good. I think the next time I get a matcha I'll stick to the original cream top. The hojicha was deliciously fragrant and the original cream top was perfect with this.

I'm sooooooo excited that this place opened up in Castro Valley! Have already been here a couple times - once when they did the "practice day" and we got 2 drinks for free, and then a couple more times where we paid full price. So far, I think my favorite is either the soft serve or the drinks/lattes (black sesame matcha latte currently in the lead for favorite). Pros: - Really delicious matcha, probably has a monopoly in this area right now because there's not a lot of competition - Wide variety of menu options - if you're feeling like a soft serve cone or just want to get a drink - The aesthetic is very minimalist and calming, lots of neutrals, and lots of outside seating great for small parties - Open late! I feel like not a lot of things are open after 9pm in Castro Valley so I'm excited to hang out here with friends in the evenings this summer - Pretty solid service - all the gen Z staff is pretty professional and efficient Cons: - Pricing is up there (like $7 or more for most items), but I think that is to be expected for this kind of shop and in Castro Valley - Typical of this area, parking can be pretty tough especially on Friday nights or weekends around dinner time. We personally love coming on weekdays - Long line right now because of the opening hype, but hoping this dies down soon! - The float is a very fun concept - but I feel like so much of the soft serve gets stuck on the copious amounts of ice in there that it doesn't feel like a great value, and I ended up having to suck on all the ice cubes to feel like I got the full bang for my buck LOL. Will be sticking to the soft serve or the drinks for now. Or you might be better off buying one of each so you can enjoy each on its own.

    Tracy H.

They're still new but their drinks are good! I really like their original cheese matcha and their matcha yuzu sparkler! The service was fairly quick and the staff were very nice. It was a bit crowded since they are new so there was not enough seating. Possibly when the hype dies down this would be a good place to sit and chat with friends!

Several visits were made during their opening and their black sesame ice cream was creamy and invigorating. The matcha drinks were well made and delicious. It is worth a stop so long as the queue is reasonable.

    Jack H.

Came for the soft opening, and it was busy! Each day I drive by, it gets busier and busier. Items were great here. I would pass on the float next time. Soft serve was great, however the ice inside the drink was overkill. I felt I didn't get my bang for my buck. Strawberry matcha was delicious. Good balance of sweet with the matcha flavor. I am going to wait for the line to die down to go back. It is too hyped right now.

    Eric B.

Long line as expected. I got the Back Sesame / Ube soft serve. It was not too sweet. The Preet half half mix. You can get this in a cup or cone. My wife and Daughtergot a matcha drink and they said this would be one of their new match spots. There are about 5 tables and a counter that has about 10 stools. So lots of seating. Friendly service. They were to busy to really make the experience memorable. I might come back

I was excited to hear about a new matcha place in the east bay! Price wise- it is up there with many matcha places nowadays with my total for two drinks being $18. The line goes out the door, but it moves relatively fast so don't let that deter you. Service was excellent and did not disappoint. Seating is plentiful both outside and inside. Banana pudding matcha: 6.9/10 I honestly found this drink too sweet for my taste. The matcha quality was excellent though. I would opt to ask for less sweet if possible. Black sesame matcha: 8.2/10 This one is fantastic if you love that black sesame taste. Again, matcha was great quality. For its soft opening, they are doing very well. I can't wait to try the other drinks in the menu.

It was $8.50 before tip, which is very steep even with today's rising boba prices. They also have orchid oolong tea and a guava and peach flavor which I want to try next time, as well as selling hojicha and matcha. You can sign up for rewards at the ordering kiosk. It's sour and acidic but still sweet; I do wish in hindsight I'd asked for the lime to be removed, which is part of the drink customization settings, because the lime really overpowered it and it's harder to make out the pineapple. It had a rigid cup though, seems to be decent enough quality to reuse the cup. Overall, the drink was decent, but I took off a star because of how pricey it was. Still, I appreciate the premise of all the drinks containing lime and that they have some less common drink flavors.

Not only are the pastries some of the prettiest that I've seen but they're actually quite tasty (and not too sweet either)! Comes in a nice branded box too. Before I rattle off my reviews of the pastries that I tried I'll say that the pastries here, although laminated, have no crisp and are strictly the soft and chewy type (think Costco croissants). I prefer some crisp, but I wouldn't hesitate on returning here to try more things. - French tart: amaaazing egg custard filling. It's so milky it's almost flan-like! - Brownie fruit tart: omg prob one of my fave brownie textures; not fudgy-dry and not too-cake-like either. Nailed the custard filling as well. I'd say my fave pastry in the bunch. - Passion fruit ganache danish: deliciously tart passion fruit filling! - Sweet cheese bowtie: funny enough the sweet cheese reminds me a lot of Cheez Whiz haha (nostalgic for me) but silkier and lighter in taste. The sweet cheese is only in the center of the bowtie. - Ham & cheese: flavorful ham but could've had a little bit more of it. The cheese part tastes similar to the cheese filling in the sweet cheese bowtie. - Ube moon: mad props for ube jam actually being used here instead of just ube extract like at most bakeries that offer ube treats. I will say though that the ube filling is a bit too dense; maybe the ube jam could've been mixed with some custard to make the filling lighter. Only a couple of customers in line when I visited on a Sunday early afternoon and the display case was still more-than-half full. I got two original croissants, an orange creme brulee, and a strawberry crescent croissant. The original croissants were perfectly crunchy, and not too airy that there isn't anything inside the shell. Pretty dense in you ask me, and I love it that way! The orange creme brulee was really pretty. Caught my eye in the crowd! Though I thought that the croissant-style bread on the outside of the pastry was not crispy enough, the creme brulee definitely had a rich orange-y aroma. The strawberry crescent was my absolute favorite. I love how the hard, dense outside contrasted with the creamy center. The strawberry cream in the center isn't too sweet in my opinion! The menu also boasts lots of great drinks including mate tea! Lucky us, the empanadas we ordered weren't in stock so we had to wait ~10 for freshly baked ones. They came out buttery and piping hot, even with little hand-stamped letters on them so you know what you're eating, and it was so delicious. Most are about $5.50 each. This place was solid!…read more The ambience is not only crazy clean, but the vibes are chill. I went on a random afternoon where it wasn't very busy so I was in and out in less than 5 minutes once I decided what I want. Very spacious and has a ridiculous amount of seating so I'd imagine even when they are busy, it's tolerable. The art on the wall is also *chefs kiss*. It was my first time here so I asked the staff for some support and he did a good job breaking things down for me. He didn't have much enthusiasm or seem excited by my business, which I typically love about smaller coffee shops, but that's really my only criticism. I ordered the Yemeni Latte w/ Soy milk as an alternative. If you like spice, 10/10, great flavor. If you don't, choose something with a more gentle touch. Overall, the experience is a 9/10 but I'll give it 5/5 stars. They didn't wow me, so if I had to choose between going back there or trying a new small coffee shop, I'd choose the latter. Will I choose it over a big name franchise, every time. Have I had better coffee shop experience, absolutely.

Location: Super elegant, chilly, lots of seating, overall very good vibes. The workers were nice,…read moredidnt have to wait to order which was nice and overall very welcoming even when they accidently spilled my drink they remade it right away. Food: I went here twice and every single time I get any of the shwarmas or meat pies, its cold. Not just a little bit, the entire inside and bottom is soggy cold. It tastes good, super light not heavy, but the coldness makes it unappetizing unfortunatly. Additionally, the biscoff cake was super dry for a milk cake, but the taste is still nice. The saffron and caramel cake are nice though, milky, sweet, pairs well with a hot drink. Drink: Dissapointing. Matcha, Chai, Latte, Smoothie, Refresher--I tried them all and was dissapointing. Matcha (latte, mango, and strawberry) tasted insanely water, same with the adani chai--which is something I look forward to at every cafe. I think increasing the milk content in the chai could really improve it. Coffee was also done poorly (iced and hot). Refresher was alright, super sweet but other than that it wasnt bad. The only thing that was the best was the smoothie. The mangorabian tastes like a chocolatey mango lassi, you can't go wrong with a smoothie. Room for improvement on everything. Overall: Very nice elegant cafe that is perfect for hangouts and doing work, the food needs to get warmed up longer to avoid coldness and all the drinks need to be improved to increase the quality of the taste. Looking forward to the change!

Perfect for an afternoon pick me up. Some mint on top and not overly sweet. I ordered something straight from the menu and it was just right as is. Indoor space with real leather couches and seating and some bar seating with views out to the boulevard. I spent some time here with a very close friend that I just didn't spend much time with in recent times. Covid and other reasons I suppose are to blame. Hours here could be a bit better but the general area is great with the BBQ and marketplace next door. Value seems good too.

Late review. My last visit here was the worst experience of any Philz locations. The person working…read moreat the order station is not personable and lacks customer service etiquette. Not a greeting or any kind of acknowledgement. To top it off, she had me repeat my simple order from their featured menu several times. It wasn't like it was loud indoors. And she made it seem like I was an inconvenience. How much more obviously rude can you be? Maybe she wasn't having a good day but she seemed fine chit chatting away with the fellow baristas afterwards. Not my type of Philz if workers here pick and choose who they want to service. Other than that, they have plenty of seating indoors and outdoors. I do like the spaciousness of their outdoor seating. Parking can sometimes be a nuisance even tho there's a parking lot available. Oh and their featured drinks tend to seem a little too sweet. I plan to stick with my philtered soul. Name says it all. But, not so sure if I'd frequent this location.
