Went on the second day of their soft opening. The line was long, but not terrible. Just outside the front door, a bit. By the time we left, it was back to the side patio. Everyone was super friendly, and everyone was working very hard. We ordered Matcha Lattes with strawberry cheese cap and a Matcha Latte Banana pudding. Both were really good! The wait time wasn't bad for how busy they were. I would say we were there for about 45 minutes from getting in line to getting our drinks. Looking forward to trying other drinks and trying out the soft serve selections as well as the cheesecake (they had them on display, but they were not available). read more

My cousin recommended that I check out Urban Matcha, so I decided to give it a try and really enjoyed it! The store was packed both inside and outside, so I expected a long wait. Even though the line was pretty long, it only took about 15 minutes from getting in line to receiving our drinks, which wasn't bad at all. Once we ordered, the drinks came out fairly quickly. We ordered six drinks, including a Matcha Latte and several cream top flavors--Black Sesame, Strawberry, and Original. The matcha was smooth, creamy, and just the right amount of sweet. Fresh from Las Vegas?!?! Color me shocked that the first location outside of LV is in Castro Valley! The soft opening did not disappoint. My friend chose Ube & Black Sesame Softserve and I picked the Matcha Parfait - agar jelly, cornflakes, matcha gelato, adzuki bean, 2 mochi balls, 1 chestnut with any soft serve flavor. I picked Matcha & Vanilla twist. I liked the layered approach. I was surprised that the parfait had some cake in it and a little bummed that the softserve was wide loops and a hollow middle. The seating is limited for the big crowds and it feels a bit claustrophobic since the tables are about 1 foot apart. Fortunately, we found cozy window seats in the corner. We'll be back. My girlfriend and I went here to try it out since we had our fair share of matcha places including making our own at home...this has become our new favorite! We got the matcha parfait, the banana pudding matcha, and the ube soft serve. Along with their matcha tasting super authentic, so was the ube. Customer service was top notch and really fast. The line was "long" (for a good reason), but since service was fast, we hardly felt like we were standing awhile. Since it sits right next to the marketplace, parking was easy to find. There was a lot of ice cream which was perfect for the sunny hot day and it's a perfect 2 in 1 where you can try the soft serve and a drink. The hojicha tea was not grainy, it was very smooth but I did prefer it better when the soft serve melted to give it a sweeter flavor. Delicious. I was worried the parfait would be too much, but it was very light. The ube and matcha soft serves were both amazing and paired well. We've been to this new establishment a few times since it's been opened and every visit has been enjoyable. The line may be long at times but the service is quick and efficient. You can tell that this business has their overall process down to a T, and they come with experience operating such a business. The matcha soft serve is perfect and my kids love the black sesame soft serve with a cone. I've also had the matcha tea with strawberry flavored cheese cap and matcha tea float. Both drinks were amazing but after trying a few iterations of the float, I would recommend light ice for the best blend of matcha taste and keeps the matcha soft serve last longer. It's abt 3 shots of caffeine in all the drinks. I don't recommend if you are used to caffeine or for young kids. This caffeine makes you wired. Make sure to lower the sugar or you will be jumping off the wall. I got: Uji Kintoki - which was pretty good, it had 2 mochis, red bean, and matcha shaved ice. - very good and appetizing - a little too strong for caffeine The cheese cap drinks mostly taste of matcha, there's not much taste of the Ube and strawberry. You have to wait for the ice to melt to taste it. I don't recommend it if you want to taste the cheese cap part, the taste matcha is overpowering compared to it. The Matcha shaved ice - the ice cream part is really strong matcha - mochi is good - red beans - the combo red bean and matcha is great, it helps even out the strong flavor of matcha The service is good, the staff are welcoming and patient. The place is really nice, trendy, cool and a great hangout spot. As well as a great pinterest worthy place. Already been here a couple times and have not been disappointed. Enjoyed multiple matcha lattes & even a soft serve on my own. It's ridiculously delicious. I'm very fortunate that CV has this spot. Paid nearly 10 bucks including tip(15%) for this half melted soggy cone mess of a thing. Ordered, waited. They were fulfilling orders before mine. One of which was the same - ube black sesame soft serve. Nobody came to pick it up so it sat there for a bit. My order came up, guy brought my order but decided to hand me the old one that's been sitting there instead of the new one. Guess he thought he needed to rid the old one but we're talking about soft serve here not a piece of cake or pie. Needs more training. read more

A very welcome to Urban Matcha, finally occupying the old Wend's location. Just popped in on their soft opening, tried their matcha parfait, matcha cream latte, and a matcha float. To start, I believe the matcha quality is pretty standard for a chain, matching the same level of consistency as matcha love or similar. Their soft serve tastes a little better than their matcha latte, and the parfait was sort of a "not too sweet" kinda dessert for me (IYKYK). Service was surprisingly quick to take orders, very friendly, especially surprising for a first day. I can't say there's much tweaking to do to get it up and running, it seems pretty good already. It'll especially be a nice hang out spot with a really cozy seating layout both indoors and out. It'll definitely be a big hit with summer just around the corner. read more

Every time we'd visit my parents in Las Vegas - a must go spot, for multiple times, was the Urban Matcha location on Jones / Spring Mountain Rd (Chinatown). Last visit in LV, I asked if they would open one in the CA Bay Area & the lady said "YES, we're opening in San Fran." I DIDN'T realize SAN FRAN was gonna be in Castro Valley!!! Lol. So much closer to where I live!! It's perfectly located in downtown right next to the CV Marketplace. Newly opened, clean & bright inside and the matcha is just as delicious! I'm hooked on the matcha tea float. Usually I get the matcha float on matcha tea but this time I got the ube & matcha soft serve on matcha tea. To me, the Matcha taste nice and thick and bold and full. Some matches are really watery. It tastes more like milk than it does green tea but this Matcha was very bold and it's flavor. We loved it. Pretty solid place! The customer service was really good and the person helping me out was very sweet! One thing that wasn't clear is that the cheese top cap drinks I thought the cheese top was included within the drink but after making my base selection and adding the cream top they charged me extra for it. However that was not clear at all the only price that shows up is the base drink price. This is definitely a lot more on the pricier end close to $9 for a medium sized drink and the size was very small too. The medium size is a small at most drink places. read more

Great new matcha spot in the East Bay! Flavors were strong and drinks were able to be customized. I got the black sesame cheese cap matcha latte and the regular matcha latte, both less sugar. I personally would have preferred an even stronger matcha flavor, but I'll come back for another try eventually when they work the kinks out. The black sesame cap was delicious. The caffeine didn't feel as strong to me, but I might have just been extra sleepy from the hot week. I don't know why they're charging tax on their drinks though, so the already high price is even higher when you factor in Alameda County's 10.25 tax rate (fwiw, I got only cold drinks). I think this place is worth trying, but I can't justify it being my go-to spot. The medium size starts at 12oz for ~$7 depending on drink. Prices are high everywhere, but most places charge the same price for a 16oz...without taxes as well. read more

The drinks were definitely on the sweeter side, which I personally enjoyed but can see it being too sweet for certain people. There's a nice interior, quick service, and great options! My family and I went there together, and I hoped the place would be good and the ambiance was great! It looked cozy and comfortable. My family got the black sesame cone, the vanilla cone, and I got the Matcha Parfait. Sadly, it was really disappointing. The ice cream was icy, and it was not creamy or smooth like other places. Do not get the ice cream here and get it somewhere else because it was not good. For the Parfait, the cake that comes with it was dry and it made you dehydrated. I also didn't like the toppings that came with it except the cereal bits. I was willing to try something new, but it wasn't great. The drinks were really good. We got the banana pudding matcha and it was great! So, you shouldn't get the ice cream and just get the drinks. The server that was calling out the names had no common sense. We ordered the cones and it was obviously ready, but he just held it and waited for what? Like just give it to us already! And then he just set it aside. Terrible! When we got it, it was all melted and it was practically soup. And even worse, there was a sleeve on the cone, but he just completely ignored it and touched it with his bare hands! No hygiene at all. Can't he just wear gloves or something like that? And when we confronted it to him, he just said that he just made it when it has been sitting around for like 5 mins. Like come on!
