I was hella stoked when I found out Urban Matcha opened in the Bay Area! I went to their Vegas location and liked the quality of the matcha in their latte and soft serve. We been here 3x's since they opened. 'Twas a hot asssk day during one of their soft openings and it was busy af. We couldn't find parking in the lot behind them so we had to find a spot in the lot over near a pet store. There were at least 20 people ahead of us. And you know a place is good when Asians are willing to wait in the sun for drinks. It was hella packed and busy inside. My boo ordered the banana pudding matcha and I ordered their Hojicha matcha float. I love the green hue of their matcha and soft serve. That deep green is an indicator to me that they got that premium stuff. The wait to order was long because I guess people are indecisive but the drinks come out pretty fast. I was surprised how fast and efficient they were during the soft opening, too! Despite the overwhelming amount of people inside we were able to snag a table near the door. The matcha soft serve was strong in flavaflav but wasn't too bitter. I'd say it's a level 3.8 out of 5 intensity wise. As it melted I mixed it in with the Hojicha. The Hojicha was nutty and toasty with a hint of caramel. It's a good drink to sip on if you want some caffeine but not really, since it's not as strong as matcha. The banana pudding was thiccck and had good banan flavaflav and it intermingled well together with the matcha. My boo said he really liked it and finished it pretty fast. They were open on 4th of July and had regular hours so we came out to try their parfait and strawberry/matcha latte. We went with the vanilla matcha swirl soft serve parfait. It was loaded with a lot of toppings such as mochi bits, corn flakes, matcha sponge cake, red bean and agar jelly. I liked the crunch that the flakes gave to add texture to the smooth soft serve. Parfait I recommend but was sad that it was kinda hollow inside. The strawberry cheese matcha was okay. I prefer strawberry jam or puree in my matcha lattes. The boo is a big fan of matcha strawberry so he downed the drink. We came out recently after their hard opening with friends and we ordered the sesame cheese Hojicha and my friend went with the matcha cone and sea salt foam matcha latte. The sesame cheese was interesting. It was salty and charcoal-esque. My friend didn't like the topping at all. She said it kinda tasted like cigarettes. My boo tried it and he said the flavors were okay-ish. He took a few sips and I basically finished it. I gave it a 6/10. Not everyone will like this drink. I think the sesame overpowered the Hojicha. My friend who loves matcha loved both the soft serve and latte. Urban is a great place to sip and chill with friends, your SO or family. The shop is new and modern with small booths with pillows, marble-esque round tables and bar tables on the opposite side of the shop. They have 2 restrooms at the back of the shop if you've consumed too much soft serve. Overall, urban knows how to do their matcha. Good lattes and soft serves at a decent price. Service is quick but employees could be a little more friendly. They're one of the best matcha shops in the East bay. Highly recommend to check it out if you're in the area.
Urban Matcha's in town! I went to the Vegas location earlier this year. They have soft serve too! Funnily enough, no one got a matcha drink when I stopped by. Sis wasn't with us otherwise she would've gotten a matcha latte. *Black Sesame Hojicha Latte *Hojicha Latte *Matcha & Ube Soft Serve Employees are accommodating and helpful. Cool, refreshing first sip. I love hoji! Sesame cream sweetens it up so I can get no added sugar. Dad enjoyed the soft serve. Nice, bright location with indoor & outdoor seating. They also have basque(?) cheesecake slices. It's right next door to Castro Valley Marketplace so the parking is shared.
A total win for the Castro valley community! As soon as I heard this place was in development, I was completely invested. This review is long over due but I'm finally catching up!! Urban matcha It's conveniently located in downtown Castro valley and depending on what time of day you're dropping by, parking can either be a breeze or you might find yourself circling around. The ambiance inside is so elevated yet casual. It's so modern but still has that cozy chill vibe to it. All the staff members are so kind and are more than willing to answer questions especially if you don't know much about match or if it's your first visit! Everything is always so clean, from the floors, restrooms down to when they prepare your order. I never have any spillage or find myself having to clean the lid ever. It's great! The matcha is so delicious too. Some people may say it's overhyped but as someone who's tried authentic matcha, this is great! I don't care for the pricing as long as the quality matches the price. These guys are hustling everyday but boy are they fast, efficient and kind. I've brought friends and family here and they share the same sentiment that even if theres a line, if we can find parking. We're stopping and ordering! Keep up the amazing work guys!
I had been wanting to try Urban Matcha since they opened, but the long lines always kept me away. I stopped by on a Saturday around 6pm and there was no line out the door, so I took my chance! I'm definitely not a matcha girlie or connoisseur, but I ordered the medium Banana Pudding Matcha for about $9 and some change. The line moved quickly, my drink was ready in about two minutes, and the shop had a clean, fun atmosphere with music playing. The matcha was delicious, but the banana pudding topping really did it for me! Definitely worth trying, and I'll be back for another drink.
Urban Matcha opens in Castro Valley! It's so refreshing to see this part of the East Bay get a specialty matcha cafe. I love their double matcha latte, as well as their different combinations of matcha lattes with different flavors of cream tops. I'm really impressed by the way their matcha shines through these sweet and creamy drinks. Their banana matcha is solid. I found it to have a thick, pudding like consistency and flavor. Their strawberry cheese is also very tasty. This place gets busy, but the line moves at a good pace. At times, they will have staff go down the line to start taking orders on a portable pos system. During a busy weekend, I noticed that they do batch make matcha in pitchers. I saw multiple coming in and out of the back kitchen area and I did have a large order, so it was great to see my drinks being made super fast.
I have been going here more consistently and have noticed that they have good quality matcha, but you have to know what drink to get. If you just get a plain matcha latte or one with a cheese cap, you can really see the matcha quality shine through. They are much more efficient now that they are out of soft opening and would love to see them improve further.
I've been here once before and really loved it! This time was just as good, if not better! It's such a cute store - a bit small but they do also have a nice outdoor seating area if you can't find a spot inside. Perfect place to catch up with a friend. And the matcha is AMAZING. Last time I got an iced matcha latte with froyo in it, which was great. This time I got the pumpkin spice matcha which was such an unexpected but amazing combination. Will definitely be back again!
My friend and I were around the area and wanted some matcha. I quickly looked up a spot on Yelp and found Urban Matcha. It was just a short distance walk from Yumee Katsu. As we approached the store, we noticed the line was out the door. Perhaps a good sign? The staff members there had their systems in placed. Very efficient and wait time wasn't that bad. The drinks were so worth it! One drink was close to $9 tho... but so good!! Matcha latte with black sesame foam - highly recommend!! I got mine with oat milk and light ice. I devoured my drink and was debating if I should have ordered another one.. hmm. I didn't know they have multiple locations! Wished there was one in the South Bay. Would recommend!! High quality matcha.
I am happy that my husband told me about this place. It was busy when we got there, line off the door. However, there are someone at the registry and someone was taking orders in the line as well, so it moved quickly. Great service thus far. My husband ordered the Vietnamese coffee with original cheese cap. Delicious it was so flavorful. I love the added cheese cap. I was gonna ordered the match parfait but i needed a pick me up. So, I ordered the hojicha latte with sesame cap. I love it!! It was so good. I drink every drop. So, glad i ordered this one. My kids got the vanilla soft serve..a bit pricey. I wish we got the flavored one though. They said they have tasted better. Next time we will try other flavor.
Such a yummy spot! We came here on a Sunday. Parking was a bit tough but we finally got a spot. The line was quite long but went by quick. We ended up waiting 20 minutes till we got to order. We ordered an ube matcha and a hojicha latte. Our drinks came out really quickly. Both were so delicious! The ube cream top was my favorite. The ube flavor was not too overpowering and perfectly paired with the matcha. The matcha definitely tastes high quality. We ended up sitting outside and getting a few snacks from Castro Marketplace. Will definitely be back to try other drinks!
Just went to Urban Matcha on Monday at 3pm. A lot of people, I guess, this is summer, and kids or teachers are off on summer time. 1) Modern decor 2) clean restaurant/drink place 3) restroom is super clean(very new) 4) Outside seating area has cute chair(sorry no photo for that). 5) Ordered regular matcha and matcha ice-cream cone. But taste very good. And I got my order pretty fast. Will be back soon.
They are currently in on the soft opening! I've heard great things about Urban Matcha and had to try it out for myself. Hojicha Float with Matcha Soft Serve 9/10 Strawberry Matcha Latte 8.5/10 Matcha Lychee Jelly 6.5/10 Hojicha Matcha was refreshing. I love the dark-roasted nuttiness of hojicha, and it pairs amazingly with the matcha soft serve. Strawberry Matcha was good. I prefer getting no sweet since the strawberry foam is pretty sweet. I got less sweet but it was still a bit too sweet for me. Matcha Lychee was really refreshing. I recommend it for those who want something on the lighter side and don't taste too much matcha. I thought it was too sweet for me to ask for a couple of sips. I suggest getting less sweet.
Hmm another matcha cafe... I really want to like this place but I just found the drinks too watery. Maybe just the batch today or something but my matcha kuromitsu and matcha cream latte tasted like watered down matcha. Service: fast Ambiance, busy and spacious

Came for the soft opening, and it was busy! Each day I drive by, it gets busier and busier. Items were great here. I would pass on the float next time. Soft serve was great, however the ice inside the drink was overkill. I felt I didn't get my bang for my buck. Strawberry matcha was delicious. Good balance of sweet with the matcha flavor. I am going to wait for the line to die down to go back. It is too hyped right now. read more

I've tried Urban Matcha 2 times so far, both from someone at my work buying for everyone. The first time I had thought I ordered a Hojicha frappe, but when the driver brought it over it looked and tasted more like a matcha frappe. Not sure if the person we gave all of our orders to messed up or maybe the wrong drink was prepared, but while it was the wrong drink I still thought it tasted pretty good. Not overly sweet, and you can still taste the matcha. The second time around I ordered a Hojicha Latte with a strawberry cheese cap (making sure my coworker texted the right order just to be sure). And imo I thought it was real nice. I prefer the roasted taste of hojicha over matcha. Sweet, nutty, not too bitter, plus I thought the strawberry cheese cap was a nice touch as well to add some creaminess. I would really love to go to the place on one of my days off because so far I'm really loving the drinks! read more
Tried this during soft opening, we got the matcha cheese latte and the hojicha tea float. For the hojicha tea float with matcha ice cream, it was very good. There was a lot of ice cream which was perfect for the sunny hot day and it's a perfect 2 in 1 where you can try the soft serve and a drink. The hojicha tea was not grainy, it was very smooth but I did prefer it better when the soft serve melted to give it a sweeter flavor. The black sesame cheesecake was also very good, smooth strong sesame flavor. read more
Long line as expected. I got the Back Sesame / Ube soft serve. It was not too sweet. The Preet half half mix. You can get this in a cup or cone. My wife and Daughtergot a matcha drink and they said this would be one of their new match spots. There are about 5 tables and a counter that has about 10 stools. So lots of seating. Friendly service. There was a line when I got there, so that gave me time to decide what to order. I decided on the Matcha + Vanilla Soft Serve. Matcha has a strong earthy taste by itself but with the mix of creamy Vanilla, that made it the perfect combo. They have a wide selection of matcha items that look captivating. Next time, I'll try one of their drinks. Perhaps, the Banana Pudding Matcha. read more
I've come during their initial free drink day before their soft opening, and then another time for their actual soft opening. Line starts at the front of the entrance and is roped off. Inside is very bright and has nice decor, but can be a bit cold especially at night. There are some tables and chairs outside too. During their free drink day, I was able to try the iced matcha latte with ube cheese cap and another iced matcha latte with original cheese cap. Ube had a good flavor, but the matcha flavor could be stronger. It's on the lighter side and I don't think you can adjust sweetness, so they are relatively sweet but not overly sweet. I would still prefer the option of choosing less sweet. Returning for the soft opening, I only opted for the cup of soft serve (ube & black sesame). I do wish the soft serve was more creamy as it was a tiny bit icy but flavor was still good (perhaps I'm too used to the soft serve at Meadowlark). Overall a very solid matcha spot, especially for the Castro Valley area. I'd still prefer matcha from Matsu Matcha, although that's a bit farther away. read more

We went opening weekend and the line was long but moving pretty quickly. We waited longer for our drinks than in line! Be patient with the workers they're doing their best!! Unfortunately for the weekend the matcha was pre batched, but I did see a bowl and whisk so I'm guessing when the line isn't crazy they will be hand whisking! I'm really excited, this has to be one of the best things to happen to Castro valley in terms of matcha spots. The matcha float is so refreshing and the matcha soft serve is great, you can really taste the umami matcha. I'm interested in going back to try the sparklers. Plenty of seating outside and inside so I think this place will be bustling all summer. There's a bathroom, and counter top seating. Parking is very difficult on the weekends you will have to circle the block a couple times. Great location though, and great vibes. The pre batched matcha was a bit astringent so if that's not your thing maybe come on a weekday when it's not as busy! Overall amazing experience and my favorite was the float!! Have to go to back for the matcha parfait. read more
Went today around 1:30pm, line was out the door but got moving fast! In addition to the cashier, there was another person going down the line to take orders (like they do at in n out lol). We actually didn't wait too long in line and the wait to get our drinks wasn't too long. Ambience is great. Sooo much outdoor seating which is amazing! Lots of indoor seating as well and really cute tiny booths for 2 people. Loved it! I got a regular matcha latte and a matcha parfait. The matcha parfait is AMAZING!!! I loved it and would get it again. Latte was okay! I should have gotten oat milk but i got too distracted. Regular milk overpowered the matcha and it came out to be a super light matcha flavor despite how green the latte is. Staff is definitely still training! Our cashier seemed so nervous when I asked what kind of matcha they use i just wanted to know the brand lol! Be patient with them So far, awesome! I went yesterday, so I'm not sure if it was still soft opening. The line was out the door. We waited about 30 minutes. I got the Matcha soft serve which was incredible. We were kind of in a rush, so we didn't have time to wait for drinks to be made since it took a little bit more time so I figured with the soft server it would be easier and faster. The employees were really nice. I wish I had time to look at the menu beforehand. I usually go to a place knowing what I am am going to order, but since I was in the area and we saw that it was open, we just went in. It was over $8 after tax. Pricey but its worth the treat once in awhile All the drinks look so pretty I can't wait to go back and try it. They had a display of cheesecake with different flavors. The decor inside is so cute and aesthetic. Plenty of parking. I'm so happy to have a Matcha place close by! I wish them the most success! read more
A friend and I showed up for the soft opening (or was it truly a grand opening?!) on a whim only to find ourselves in an hour long line. Luckily we had planned to meet for lunch that my friend already picked up so we had it in line while catching up. I'm not too bothered by how insane the line was given it was a "soft opening" aka grand opening tbh. The matcha WAS delicious -- my friend got a strawberry cheese cap matcha latte and I got a banana pudding matcha. I deduced one star mostly because I had asked if the banana pudding matcha was a pudding (like is the consistency something I need to eat with a spoon or is it a drink?) and honestly wish he just said it was a drink because then I wouldn't have added mochi balls that I needed to fish out Lol like I thought maybe it was the consistency of a soft serve. Nonetheless even with the hour long line, our drinks came out rather quickly and I thoroughly enjoyed my delicious matcha. There was also plenty of seating which was amazing given how many people showed up and even space for my friend to nurse her baby! Really solid matcha latte in the East Bay! I got a simple Iced Matcha Latte, no frills or flavored cream tops. The matcha was earthy and had a good fragrance to it! Nothing out of the ordinary. The banana pudding matcha is yummy! I tried their default sweetness level because it was my first time. It was a bit too sweet for me so I recommend ordering less sweet. The place is cute, green, and good for IG pics. It gets busy, especially since there's only in-store ordering and no mobile ordering yet. Parking may be difficult since it's downtown. Overall, I give it a thumbs up and worth a try, especially if you're in the area and love matcha :) read more
Urban Matcha is a good matcha dessert spot. I wouldn't come here if I was craving a strong matcha drink, but it is worth making a stop for all their other menu items. Their caps are a great addition to their drinks. I got an iced matcha latte with a black sesame cap. The matcha wasn't very strong, but it was a nice drink with the black sesame cap. We stumbled on Urban Matcha while driving by, and sawed the long line outside for its soft opening. It was a hot day so business was really good. We got in the line and waited a little bit over 10 minutes before we got to the counter. They have some chairs and tables inside and also counter seating. There was air conditioned inside so it felt really nice. Outside on the street patio they also have comfortable cushioned chairs and tables with umbrellas to provide shade. We got a matcha soft serve, matcha lemon float, banana pudding matcha, and matcha yuzu sparkler. I have to say the matcha soft serve was the standout. The flavor was really rich, and reminds me of the ones I had in Japan. The matcha drinks were OK, not much different than matcha drinks in other places, but the matcha float was a good idea as you can get both soft serve and matcha drink in one. For the price, the drink size could be larger though. Urban Matcha is a nice addition to the many places to eat and snack in downtown Castro Valley. read more
I've been wanting to try Urban Matcha for a while since I love matcha. Be prepared for a long line. It definitely gets busy. I ordered the Banana Pudding Matcha because I'm a sucker for anything banana flavored. The matcha itself was really good, and I loved the banana pudding foam on top. It was delicious, but also pretty rich and filling. About halfway through, it started to feel a little too heavy for me. If you're into creamy, decadent drinks, you'll probably love it. Next time I'll try one of their lighter matcha drinks, but I'd definitely come back again. read more

Came out to the Bay Area to visit a friend and had this matcha spot saved. Cute and trendy spot. I tried the banana pudding matcha. It was on the sweeter side but the matcha was good. Came here on a Tuesday in the middle of the day so it wasn't busy. Parking lot in the back can get a little busy since there's other businesses in the area. read more
I came here right after they opened on a Saturday around 11:05 AM, and the line was already out the door! Luckily, it moved quickly thanks to someone taking orders with a tablet, which kept everything running smoothly. I tried the Matcha Cream and would rate it an 8/10--it wasn't chalky, had the perfect level of sweetness, and was a really enjoyable drink. The pricing was pretty average, but overall I had a great first experience and would come back to try more items. read more
More of a dessert matcha. The actual matcha quality is in the middle, not terrible but also not "real" matcha with vegetal bitterness or unami either. And once you get the topping on it, it almost doesnt matter because the cream is generous and so the drink is sweet and good if you have a sweet tooth and dont like the bitterness of matcha to stand out. Not for me, but I tend to like more bitterness and real banana bits in my banana matcha but def worth a try if your looking for a dessert! read more

Tried this for the first time after brunch with my friends. The matcha latte was strong enough to taste the matcha, and not that sweet. The matcha soft serve tasted good, but the texture was a bit icy, and I would have preferred it to be creamier (comparing the soft serve to Somi Somi). My friends tried the other items and they enjoyed them. I would like to return to try the other drinks. read more

Second time coming here. Tried their pumpkin matcha, and it was good. I prefer the banana matcha better. Some people like myself can't have whole milk, so I wish they offered more milk options other than whole milk and oat milk, which you have to pay extra for. If those are the only options, I don't think they should charge for it. Other than that, this place is good for once in a while. read more

Urban Matcha had their soft opening and I was so excited to try their matcha. The inside and outside had ample seating and the interior/furniture were very cute! the matcha itself was good too, and I would definitely come back! They're still new but their drinks are good! I really like their original cheese matcha and their matcha yuzu sparkler! The service was fairly quick and the staff were very nice. It was a bit crowded since they are new so there was not enough seating. Possibly when the hype dies down this would be a good place to sit and chat with friends! read more

Matcha we got was good. Light UBE flavor. Banana was actually one of the sweetest one out of all three. Parfait took me by surprise! Love everything that was in it. I even overheard someone say it's pretty much like a Halo Halo lol I actually came back to give it another go to try out something more refreshing so I got the Yuzu Matcha. You get the citrusy from the yuzu which was refreshing but the more you drink it.. it made me actually dehydrated and thirsty. So I'd say everything was fairly decent but I wouldn't put this as my top 3. read more
Drinks were 10/10 and I love that they have two sizes. Seems like a small detail but when it comes to matcha it honestly makes a huge difference! Service was great 10/10 Staff was awesome and very very fast even though it was super busy but I only stood in line like 4 minutes and I love the outside seating absolutely breathtaking we definitely needed a spot like this in CV I will definitely go back again!!!! read more

I've been here multiple times... maybe too many. Everything I've tried so far I've enjoyed, especially my fave, the Banana Pudding Matcha. The pudding is not too rich in flavor with the right amount of matcha. I can taste the matcha. The ice cream is creamy for me. I do recommend the cone though, it looks like you get more. Cup/cone = same price for me. That was disappointing. Other than that, the place is great. They do tend to get busy, expect a line, but it moves quickly. Depending on day/time you can may see no line. read more

Tried the banana matcha and it was really good!! Super creamy and didn't have that artificial banana taste once everything was mixed in. I would more so come here for a sweet treat fun drink than for matcha matcha iykwim. It was also really busy bc we came soon after their opening but the line went fairly fast. read more
This place is beautiful, incredibly clean, and has a great aesthetic and simple menu. Performance-wise on the flavor, though, it was just okay for me. We tried the Matcha with Banana Cream and a soft serve with toppings. Since matcha is their specialty, I had high hopes, but it didn't quite live up to the hype or make me say "wow." I'd be willing to come back to try the Ube and other flavors before making a final judgment, but the first round was just average. read more

Such a cute addition to CV! There's plenty of parking on the streets or in the parking lot in the back. Modern and contemporary aesthetic which is super cute and inviting. The place itself has a lot of seating inside and outdoors. Staff is well informed of the menu and quick with service. I got the matcha latte with original cheese cap as a first timer. The drink itself was pretty sweet for my liking and the matcha flavor was a bit light. If you don't like matcha for its "grassy" taste, I think you'll like this place. For my matcha lovers, I would say this is just okay so that's why I gave it a 4/5 stars. I will be coming back to try other drinks! read more

Been here 10+ times and I can conclude that quality of the drinks are consistently average. I like the location, but quality for soft serves definitely has room for improvements... grainy and too thin. I hope quality improves over time. A piece of advise.. since the front area is also a working kitchen, the food prepping people should either wear hairnets, neatly tie back their hair, or wear a cap to hide the hairs from having contact with the food... read more
