Love this place. So many options that are low calorie, but full of flavor. The Barramundi SeaBass had a light pesto on it super moist and flavorful. One of the sides you can get is avocado with EVOO and sea salt, what a perfect addition. Everyone's food was yummy. The location is great with an abundance of shopping in this shopping center. Because we're familiar with the menu, we know what to get. Ordering is simple. Select what you want, pay, they hand you a number, and the food is brought to your table. UP's food is always fresh and always hits the spot. I will typically get steak with rice and roasted Brussels sprouts. But don't sleep on their other proteins. The chicken, salmon, and tenders are good too. The portion size per protein is about 6 oz. and perfect if you want at least 30 grams of protein per meal. My wife usually gets the steak as well and to be honest, I'm always hoping she doesn't finish her meal so I can help her out. My daughter also loves Urban Plates. She's not so much of a protein eater and usually opts for their 4UP (4 Sides). Her favorites are their mashed potatas and mac n' cheese. Urban Plates is perfect for lunch or dinner if you want to keep it healthy. If you prefer to loosen it up a bit, UP also has burgers. Great place! Came here to celebrate my nephew birthday and the manager gave him a free cookie. So nice! We ordered their chimichurri steak with a side of beet salad and brussel sprouts. Delicious. Their salmon plate and sea bass combo also delicious. Staff super friendly. Tables and plates were cleared right away. We order for slices of hummingbird and coconut cake too and they were all good. I manage to come here about once a year, to the various locations they have. And every time I do, I am so underwhelmed and disappointed that I always say I'm not going to go again, but then, for some reason I always do. Start it's extremely expensive for the quality and size portion of food. The only somewhat decent thing is the salmon. Their Caesar salad is extremely basic, the dressing is just subpar. This week I tried a new item on the menu, the mushrooms with garlic and butter. I literally only had about three mushrooms. It was so gross. So I paid today for a salmon plate with a small Caesar and mushrooms that were gross $25 out the door, that did not include a beverage, which is important to note. I really want to like this place because I do think it is a San Diego based business, I am going to remember this last and final time that I went. And will not be returning. read more

This is a decent restaurant, an alternative to some more expensive places that use great quality ingredients. The set up is decent, you walk in, you get in line to order, you have plenty of time (during the short wait in line) to peruse the giant menu boards; then, you place your order, you get a number and you find a table to sit. The menu includes many healthy dishes including chicken, ahi tuna, shrimp or some vegetarian/vegan choices (more on that, below). Their wine choices are excellent; not too many but high quality (and pricey, $11 to $13.50 per glass). I got the ahi tuna (5 thick slices) with vegetables and two side, decent food and great value for $13.50. I also got one of my favorite types of soups, tomato soup. However, I didn't realize that it was a vegan recipe abs tasted the coconut milk in it. I am sure it is a great alternative for a vegan but for me, it was simply not my cup of tea. Very disappointed, primarily because it was not labeled clearly that it was not a regular tomato soup recipe. At any rate, the rest of the meal was very good and the manager (Nicholas) came around to ask if we enjoyed the meal; I said "yes, it was enjoyable" although I didn't bring up the soup since I didn't want to make a big fuss about it. But, and credit to him, he took a quick look at the bowl (which was full) and asked me if I didn't like it to which, then, I responded "yes, it was simply not the way i like my tomato soup". He explained that it was a vegan recipe and he offered to bring me something else, another side or refill my glass of wine; it was a nice gesture but we were almost done with our meals and I didn't want another glass of wine since I would be driving. I politely declined and told him to not worry about it. Plates Pass Review So after my upcoming trip, I will be on the healthy wagon once again. I am on the road a lot for work which can make eating a nice healthy lunch especially difficult. Throw in the fact that I will be going Keto but not eating beef, pig, or chicken and well.. it's gets harder. A lot harder. I have been a bit of a fan of Urban Plates, but I haven't been to one on a long time. Not even sure why. In my mind even with the $10 dishes they have on special, the dishes I wanted were around $14 plus tax and tip. I am not rich and spending that much for one meal isn't something I can do on the regular. I mean... I have useless things I need to buy... in bulk! I noticed that they were offering a special were for $20 you could buy a "Plates Pass" and get any plate, bowl, or salad they offered for $10. The pass lasts for two months so $10 a month. First, I found this to be a good offer because it would take less than 3 meals a month to make this worth it. Also, now Urban Plates has three locations that are really confident for me. Couple that with an app that lets you order for a quick pick up or curbside and you've got a deal you have a pretty good chance of using. Ok. So as I said I'd be going more hardcore healthy face after a trip I'm taking. So today I decided to try some more naughty things on the menu and save the healthy for when I'd have to... Meatloaf Plate with Mac and cheese with a tofu curry soup. The plates let you pick your main and two sides (unless you pick a plate made up entirely of sides). At about $13.75 with $1 upgrade for the soup as well as plus tax and tip.. I would be spending over $16. With the pass I got out for under $13. Not a huge savings but this plate is one of the cheaper ones on the menu. Meatloaf: Well it's not meat, it's vegetarian. It reminds me of a stuffed pepper dish. It's like the filling of it. Anyways, not much like meat b flavorful and hearty. The tomato jelly really goes well it with... that was a surprise to me! Max and cheese: Don't let the bright color fool you! This is a very cheesy Mac! The real cheese flavor is there! I ate this like a pig and ended up spilling cheese on my shirt. So... that happened. Tofu Curry Soup: this requires a $1 upgrade fee. I think they call it a "vegetable curry braise" on the menu/app... but it really is just a tofu curry soup. It was yummy and reminded me of a Thai green curry, without the spice. It wasn't bland, but the tofu was a little meh. I mean ... not sure what I'd have them do with it... I'd order this again. Bread: I won't be getting the bread pretty soon but I had to give it a nibble this time. Yummy! Mine was just a bit burnt on one side but I love how they toast and butter the bread! The portions may or may not look large to you. However, when they handed me my bag I quickly noticed how heavy it was. I can make two meals out of this! That was an unexpected score! If you are very hungry I think it'll be just fine. I am happy with my first dish, and am looking forward to trying more of their offerings. The food here is fresh and pretty healthy. I mean it's up to you what you order (like how I splurged on max and cheese). Service was pretty fast.
