Stopped by for lunch and we ordered a cheeseburger and a chicken dish. Service was prompt, even at a busy lunch hour and the food was tasty.

Today, we had the Surf and Turf Plate, which includes grilled shrimp and steak along with two sides (we selected asparagus and roasted potatoes). We also ordered the Ahi Nicolaise salad which came with a vinaigrette dressing. I tried the Pina Colada Line juice drink as well. For dessert, we shared a slice of the Hummingbird cake, which is like a carrot cake. Deliciously prepared and fantastic service. read more

We have dined at Urban Plates a few times and the food was adequate but this visit was a disappointment. My wife had the grilled steak which was too tough for her to eat. She didn't like her fries saying that they were not crisp and the oil used to cook them tasted old. She ate a few romaine leaves of her caesar salad and left the rest. I had the seared ahi which was cold and so was the broccolini and rice pilaf. Not a good value at $50 w/tip. I took the fries which I will air fry at home and try to make a steak sandwich with the leftovers. Not coming back to this restaurant willingly. read more

I really like the food here and the service is pretty good, but buyers please be aware of pricing on any add-ons or changes. Tonight I asked for extra chicken on my Cobb Salad. The charge for a small amount of grilled chicken breast was $9... not including the 3% hidden surcharge that you don't know about until you've already paid. That's only about 50 cents shy of a full rotisserie chicken at Sprouts, or 2 of them from Costco. Food is good--it's so not that good. read more

I love this place! I've loved it since the day it opened. I've never ordered anything I didn't love and I've ordered a LOT. A few weeks ago I was hosting a party and knew I wanted my favorite desserts there. I showed up the day of and requested a mango tart, flourless chocolate cake, and hummingbird cake. I did not order in advance so there was a minor panic for all of us but after talking to the baker they concluded that they had enough to sell them to me and still have enough for the restaurant. I was so grateful since I didn't have a backup plan and I really wanted my tried and true desserts. Lesson learned, order at least the night before so they can make sure to have enough. They bake them fresh daily so they're not just sitting around waiting to be sold. Thanks baker! We had a great party and the treats were a hit. read more

I'll start this review by saying I understand it's a holiday season and the higher performing All-Star employees are probably at home with their families because they got the time off that they requested so I understand that the lower end bottom of the barrel employees are working, but that doesn't give you a right to treat somebody with health issues like complete garbage. I was in last night for a quick bite to eat after doing some last-minute Christmas shopping and upon ordering I had requested that they pick out a few beats that are in the beat and carrot side, which might I add has been done on many occasions with absolutely no pushback and no attitude., that was not the case this time. The condescending and rude little girl that was taking our order said she would have to ask the kitchen staff at which point she whispered God knows what on her microphone and immediately came back to me saying yeah they're not gonna do that at what point I hold her while I'm allergic so I need them to do that and they've had no issue doing that in the past and she said yeah they're not gonna do that so I ordered my dinner as is and I walked over myself to speak to the kitchen because I figured if they saw my face and understood the situation at hand, they would be more inclined to honor my request as it was not for fun, but because I was actually allergic to beets and would prefer to eat food that I'm not allergic to. Again, I was met with one Hispanic male all but laughing in my face and another rude, redheaded female telling me that they didn't have time to do that and they wouldn't be doing that that that's too time-consuming and if I was allergic to it, why am I ordering the carrots in the first place to which I responded that is not her business, but that I am able to eat things that touched the beets. I just can't ingest the beats myself and I inquired about how they did not have time to honor such a request that takes all the 20 seconds when there was absolutely no line and all but five people in the restaurant who already had had their food and again I was met with. We're not going to honor that and basically I needed to get over it so that's leading me to writing this review. If you don't respect an honor, someone's legitimate Health concern then I can't respect an honor you as a restaurant or any of your policies. I also found a comical that when my food finally did come the beets were actually picked out of the carrots because let's face it. It literally takes all of 10 seconds to pick a couple of beets out of a salad, but that didn't rectify the situation for me. The damage has been done and to be honest I've been eating here for years, and the quality of the food has gone way down, and the prices have gone way up, so I will be purchasing my food from bushfire kitchen around the corner, who still maintains their quality of food and has a way less attitude than these people shame on you. I wish I would've eaten a beat and gone into anaphylactic shock. read more

The location is relaxing, warm inside (YaY!!), clean, ample seating, and quick service. Ordered a kids 2-pice chicken with side of Mac-n-cheese. Kids dinner also includes artisan bread, and milk (or apple juice). Kids portions are generous. The breaded chicken is NOT greasy, perfectly made, and tastes good. The Mac-n-Cheese is ehhh - la is flavor. I ordered a plate with seared ahi tuna with sides of Brussels sprouts and mashed potatoes. Tuna was nicely seared and no real tuna flavor. It didn't have any natural mild savory flavor. I still appreciated the sear on it and fresh taste. Brussels sprouts had far too much onion and not enough Brussels sprouts. I haven't been to Urban Plates in years. It use to be my "go-to" for the baby spinach and ahi. I'll give it another try again because of the location and service..... and that it's warm during winter which was sooooo nice! You should still give it a try. I am a big fan of Thanksgiving and I love to cook, but cooking turkey is not in my book. My treat to myself this year was a family turkey dinner for my family. I placed an order, and somehow the default pickup date was Tuesday. Who celebrates Thanksgiving on a Tuesday? The manager called me at 3 to ask if I was going to pick up my food. How could i screw up so bad? A rush of panic ran through my head. The manager was so kind and offered to let me pick it up on Thanksgiving day, and for that I am grateful. The pickup could not have been more efficient. We were greeted by three smiling employees who took my name and offered me a chair to wait at. The kitchen staff were operating highly efficiently in the open kitchen. 5 minutes later I left with a nicely packaged bag with turkey, mashed potato, rolls, mushroom stuffing, gravy and cranberries. It could not have been any easier or more pleasant. They even sent a follow up survey as they are constantly looking to improve their game. My family gave the food high marks, my only suggestion to them was to offer larger turkey portions as there were 9 slides for 4 people, which is not enough to put them into a turkey coma. I hadn't been to urban plates in a year and my last experience was so good I decided to head back after searching yelp for healthy food in Carlsbad. Unfortunately this time the food had great flavor but was a little meh for me. I had the "3 up" (which is 3 vegetable sides with an added grass fed steak. The steak slices were cooked to medium rare with a nice pinkness, but the texture was a little chewy. I ordered the carrots, the brussel sprouts, and the broccolini. The carrots were a bit over cooked. The broccolini was the best part. Very tasty. I do really like the atmosphere, it's upscale casual. There is a lovely fireplace dining table out front as well which is where we sat. You order at a counter and have the meals delivered to your table. They also had a surprisingly nice wine selection. Staff was friendly. I would go again to give it anothwr try as potentially I was just not having a great day? I would have given it 3 stars, but added a 4th based on previous experience there. read more

My first time and I have been wanting to check. This place out! It reminds me of an upscale Souplantation vibe (without the buffet!) The cashier was very nice, my friend told her it was my B-day and she seemed genuinely excited and offered me a free cookie right away. We sat outside by the fire pit and didn't wait long at all for our food. The food was very fresh and tasty! I had the lemonade and it was very tart like they just squeezed it! Vegan options- Hurrah! The first thing I like about this place is the BIG by the entrance MENU with all the photos of the food so we can see what we will be eating vs having an expectation and taking a blind shot in the dark, ordering based off words and not knowing what to expect. They have a portobello mushroom sandwich-burger style piled high with vegetables which looked good. I almost ordered that, but it came with potato chips, I avoid fried foods, so I passed. However, I was informed I could switch it out for french fries (also fried) or another side option for an additional cost. I decided on the most heart cardio healthy option I found which was the Vegan Superfood nuts & fruits salad with fresh greens, mandarin orange wedges, dried fruit, seed crisps with the blueberries champagne vinaigrette. Dressing was good. I didn't specifically taste blueberry nor champagne, but it blended together to be a nice fruity not too oily vinaigrette. The bits of seed crisps are nice and crunchy, bland flavor-NOT salty like some crackers, which I appreciate. It's a nice switch up from croutons. The salad was a substantial size, filling without being left filling too full. My vegetarian dining partner ordered the Three up - an option of choosing 3 vegetarian side dishes: 1. red chili tofu, which was reviewed as very good, 2. the beet goat cheese salad and 3. the macaroni and cheese all good. Our third dining partner ordered a traditional burger and fries and was happy with that. They display an enticing assortment of desserts, mostly cakes, all looked good in the down home kitchen way. Ample seating options and chair styles which I appreciate. Self serve water, they bring food to table and clear away service. Easy parking. Lots of options, healthy and modern in recipes development meaning you'll only find this type of salad here not it every other place in the forum or nearby restaurants. But they certainly have a few of the traditional American meal staples. No reservations necessary here at Urban Plate, nice for spontaneous dining: no fuss seating, no hostess, etc. which is why we ended up here when we originally came to the Forum to go to a new place that opened where reservations are recommended and a 30-45 minute wait didn't suit our situation. UP is easy, casual, eat in, take away. Child and family friendly as we saw one family there with little ones. After dark They have a big outdoor fire pit table you can self seat and eat around as well as other Patio seating. It's by far one of the best options for healthy relaxed affordable dining in the forum. read more

I believe that everyone in my party ordered the steak with Brussel sprouts and mashed potatos. Food was good - steak was a little tough and the mash potatoes had enough flavor. I don't think I would order dinner again because the price did not match the meal. I would order the Mango tart again! I ordered this for father's day and took it home. My parents love it! it was a soft crust layered with a cream and topped with sweet and tart mango slices. The three of us ate 2/3rds of the tart because it was so good a light. But this review isn't so much about the food as it is their General Manager. Let me start off with stating that my meal was ABSOLUTELY, STUPENDOUSLY DELISH!!! I visited with a friend, who had never been to Urban Plates. This day happened to be Mother's Day. We were greeted and each given a long stemmed rose. After purchasing our meal; we were given a complimentary chocolate pudding with a strawberry. Again, in celebration of Mother's Day. Manny, the General Manager, happened to be standing near the high tables where we sat. He was laughing and joking with a couple of his staff members. He began to talk with me and my friend. At this point; I hadn't realized he was even the General Manager. I thanked him for providing us with a long stemmed rose and complimentary dessert. He participated in the conversation that emphasized honor, respect and community. His demeanor was very engaging, warm and welcoming. This is were I noticed his name on his shirt that had his title. The care he displayed for his customers was very heartfelt. We all know that interaction and participation with customers or rather people and community; forever changed after Covid. But let me tell you that Manny cares for people and his community. He didn't know that we drove over an hour to come here for a meal. He had no idea that I broke my foot. He was standing across from me while we were engaging in conversation. I asked him to come over to my side. He saw that I was wearing a cam boot. He then asked one of his servers to bring my friend and I another dessert. He didn't have to. He chose to. We were both blown away. I'm not stating this for anyone to come here for anything free. I'm sharing this because if you'd like to remember what is feels like to be honored, respected and treated like you truly are seen and not forgotten; to have a conversation that invokes hope in humanity and general kindness. I implore you to have a meal in the Urban Plates at the Carlsbad location. You won't be disappointed. You'll be seen. You'll experience genuine community and relationship. Oh; the food, desserts, drinks and ambiance are outstanding as well! I don't know if this is a franchise or corporately owned but they have a fantastic GEM of a General Manger in Manny!
