Hands down, the Grilled Wild Caught Albacore Sandwich w a side of kettle chips (price $9) and a side of Rainbow Carrots & Golden Beets (price $3 as an addition to the sandwich) is my all time favorite here. The albacore is fresh, soft, meaty, and has a balanced amount of salt in each bite. The mayo-like sauce on the fish is tasty. The grilled rustic bread is thick and crispy, which adds a good texture to the sandwich. The rainbow carrots & golden beets are super soft, has like an almost caramelized coating to each piece, seasoned very well, and is well worth my $3. The Banana Cream Pie was delicious. The crust is definitely my favorite part - thick and cracker-y. The cream is soft and sweet, and has chunks of banana inside the pie. Food selections are displayed for you to select and taste what you'd like. They scoop the food for you and make the sandwiches in front of you. You can tell that they take care of each ingredient and take their time to prep the food for you. The portions of the sides can be small, but does definitely fill you. Overall, the food tastes clean and healthy, which i love. Urban Plates is inside a big plaza with plenty of parking spaces. The atmosphere is casual. The line is always out the door throughout the day and everyday and while my tolerance for long lines is minimal, the lines move fast and the food is worth it. Known for their fresh high quality ingredients and organic options, you'd think that they'd charge an arm and a leg for their offerings. But surprisingly, they have a vast selection and the prices are reasonable: $10 for an entree (bread, two sides and a main course), or $4 for home-made soup, $5 for pizzetes, etc. And the best part is that they allow you to sample everything- hooray! So, grab a tray and get ready to load up your plate! If you're a first-timer, you definitely need to get their brussels sprouts with turkey bacon & asiago cheese as your side. Grilled Wild Ono - 4 star This Ono is marinated with a cilantro-ginger dressing and is served medium rare. I felt that it was a bit fishy, but still good. I got this with asparagus and some other veggies, which I enjoyed both. Slow Simmered Pork Braise ($10 for full portion or $5.5 for half portion) - 5 star DELICIOUS!! This pork is braised with potatoes and carrots and you can lay it over three options: white rice, brown rice, or mashed potatoes. I have a soft spot for potatoes so I had a half portion on mashed potatoes. It was definitely what I needed on a cold day. The meat was so tender and so were the veggies. My coworker had a bite and she loved it so much she wants to bring her boyfriend back here. I think it's safe to say I enjoy their hot plates and their braises over the salads and pizettes. I enjoy the atmosphere and especially the food. Often times, I like coming here or Tender Greens whenever I want to eat something "healthier" even though the options I choose aren't exactly healthy haha. Around my area, there seems to be more Urban Plates locations than Tender Greens. I like how you can select your options as your standing in line..this way you can see if a certain item looks appetizing or not. I usually get the grass fed steak as my meat. It's so good and cooked the way I like my steak - tender and medium rare. The chicken is also a very good option - seasoned well and I don't find it dry. Urban Plates was the place where I first tried brussel sprouts and at the time I hated them. Few years later, I am now obsessed with brussel sprouts and get them every time I come here. I also get the mashed potatoes because it's so creamy and they give you a massive scoop! If you like getting drinks outside of just water, I highly recommend trying the watermelon pineapple mint basil replenisher. It's so refreshing and not overly sweet. Feel free to ask to try the different replenishers too before deciding which one you want. This Urban Plates location is located within the same plaza as Tastea, Target, GameStop, Creamistry and Paradise Bowls. I have never had issues with parking as the plaza has plenty of spots. I am probably one of the last people to have hit this place up. I have Urban Seoul in DJ to still go to as well lol. Went here on November 2nd, which was a beautiful evening. It had a bunch of storm clouds and it made it feel "Finally. It's the holiday season." Oh you want to hear more about Urban Plates, eh? Fineeee. You enter through the side and you go around it like you're at a cruise buffet or at a cafeteria. There are different areas you can go get your food. The first part is salads, then urban plates, then broth(I think), sandwiches, then pizzettes, and it followed up with desserts and paying. I had the slow simmered pork braise ($10.50). The guy who was there must have been new, because he asked "what rice" and I was like ummm "half and half?" and he had to ask if that was okay. I don't know if I could have substituted, but the mashed potatoes looked really good. Ah well. Rice is fine. The rice was with the broth, but the broth wasn't enough to satisfy all the rice that was on the plate. The portions are off, well off. The pork braise was dry as well, so I definitely didn't like that :/ The broth is flavorful but as I said before, it's not enough for all the rice that you get. :-/ I also decided to get fat and got a pizette. Pesto and mushroom (I forgot the actual name). The crust was more of a flatbread (yay) and the flavors were good. Pesto is amazing! Not as good as Stonefire, but still very flavorful. Was this worth $5? Yeah. Yes it was. OH! I also forgot. The pork braise also comes with foccacia bread. THE GUY FORGOT TO GIVE IT TO ME AND IF I HADN'T ASKED I WOULDN'T HAVE GOTTEN IT. So how good is this place? So good I ate here for lunch and dinner on the same day! For lunch I got the grilled urban steak salad... they really give a generous portion, I was really surprised by how much sliced up steak I got or maybe I was lucky. Normally I am not a fan of fruit in my salad but it worked. The pineapple-mango salsa was perfect. It came with a piece of grilled focacia bread yum. For dinner, I really wanted to try the braised beef but it was all out... damn!! I settled for the grilled ono and also tried some of the wife's salmon... it was okay. For this place I am just going to recommend sticking to steak, chicken, or the braised beef. The side of mac n' cheese was excellent and the mash potatoes wasn't bad either. Now the dessert, impressive and incredibly sweet. I can handle sugar and caffeine but good god the flour-less chocolate cake left me wanting to run thru a wall. On a scale of 1-10 sweetness it was a 12!! It was really rich and smooth... might only eat 1 or 2 bites the next time. I also tried the Chocolate Mousse ... it didn't even taste sweet because of the flour-less cake. LOL One item that missed, the pizza... wasn't good... maybe it was very thin flat bread and not enough cheese. I won't knock UP for it tho, overall the food is outstanding! The beverages, particularly the juices are great. I love the watermelon basil (think strawberry was in it) ... anyways really refreshing, too bad no refills. One bit of advice, add an ice machine please by the water dispenser. Overall, prices are very reasonable. This place opened up in my neighborhood recently and, after seeing some very good reviews on yelp, I made my way over to have lunch today. I wisely arrived early, about 11:15. By 11:30 the place was filling up fast and by 11:45 all the tables in the interior were full (there were some open tables on the large outdoor patio) and there was a line out the door. It's a tiny bit confusing on your first visit but they do have signs to help explain how things work. Essentially there are several "stations" where you can walk up and order your meal (a salad station, a sandwich station, a pizzetta station, etc.). You can then choose a side for your meal and can add additional sides or a dessert for additional cost. I got the Grilled Urban Steak sandwich with a side of tomato mozzarella salad plus some kettle chips. I decided to indulge and have a mini vanilla bean cheesecake with blueberries on top from their dessert section. They have unique natural sodas here so I tried a root beer. They make a big deal about this place being affordable but I thought the price was a little above average. The salad was bright and fresh in my mouth. The chips were pretty darn good too. The sandwich was a disaster though. Steak on ciabatta with roasted tomato and chimichurri aioli sounds great until you take the first bite and realize the beef is really tough. The kind of tough that fights you with every bite. I just could not tear through it with my teeth and would eventually pull at it in an unsuccessful attempt to rip it apart. Instead, a huge piece would pull out from the sandwich and I would try to nonchalantly scoop it into my mouth and chew. And chew. And chew. And chew and chew and chew. One piece was so tough I was unable to chew it and had to spit it out. On the positive side, the cheesecake was incredible. It had a rich vanilla taste and the graham cracker crust was superb. The root beer was good (but sweet) and they do offer free refills. As a single diner at a "two-top" I felt the burning eyes of seat-searching customers and also the busser pushing for me to finish and vacate. I really felt uneasy for the second half of my lunch. As soon as I took my last bite the busser came over to grab my tray so I immediately left, not even feeling comfortable enough to finish my root beer. Other customers immediately pounced on the table. I had a 2 star experience but I see the potential of this place and one day may try it again and order something different. This is how this restaurant works: it's $10 per entree and there are 4 main categories -- urban greens (salads), sandwiches, stews, and urban plates (steak, chicken, fish,etc.). Most entrees come with a side of rice or potatoes. It's cafeteria style so you pick up a tray as you enter the line, select your items and pay the cashier at the end of the line. The theme of this restaurant is "farm to plate and won't break the bank" so its emphasis is on fresh local meat and produce at an affordable price. I think it's a great concept and this restaurant seems to be doing everything right when we were there today. GRILLED URBAN STEAK SALAD: It was an absolutely delightful salad made with mixed greens, jicama, cashews, and an absolutely delicious pineapple mango salsa. It was tossed in a jalapeño lime dressing with just a perfect hint to lime to enhance the flavor. All the ingredients tasted fresh and it was super yummy. The steak was perfectly medium rare (see picture), tender, and flavorful. It was served with a slice of focaccia bread which was really good. VEGETARIAN CURRY: It was made with lots of veggies such as carrots, peppers, zucchinis and tofu in a mild curry which was actually a bit bland and lacking a rich curry flavor. It was good, but certainly not great. It also came with a side as well as focaccia bread. Service was really good. I told an employee at the entrance it was our first time there and he explained the menu to us and patiently answered our questions. Every employee that we encountered today was very friendly and helpful. However, tables were not bussed and cleaned fast enough and tables were not wiped down well enough. This is probably an area that they can improve. A fellow yelper said this is a mix between tender greens and lemonade...that's the exact thought I had when I saw the food and tasted it...and oddly enough, it falls between those two in terms of how much I enjoy it. I got the steak plate with broccolini and mac n cheese. The steak was good enough and the mac n cheese was smooth and rich. The broccolini was a bit undercooked, but their portion of that was very generous... I ended up not finishing it. The piece of bread is bland...if you don't need the extra carbs, you don't miss out by skipping that. I also tried my friend's roasted potatoes and chicken. Both were extremely well-seasoned and cooked perfectly. I would order the chicken over the steak in a heartbeat. I can't wait to try the other sides and the dessert! read more

Knock-offs. Cheap knock-offs. You know what I'm talking about? Somebody walks into a place, assesses the decor, the atmosphere, and the offerings then meets with their cut-rate team to deliver "something like that". And it's "something like that" all right but also completely unlike that and all wrong. That, to me, is Urban Plates. In atmosphere Urban Plates feels like someone tried to spin on what Mendocino Farms is doing but they missed on scale and quality and design. Instead of exuding a fresh, high quality sensibility it feels cheap, from the outsize scale to the schlocky signage. Enter to a vast space and observe the food which looks to be, again, a cross between Mendocino Farms viewed through plastic fun-house glasses, Stone Oven (moving a bit downscale), and Boston Market (wtf?). It's the "roast" category that has me thinking of Boston Market but I don't even know that BM had crockpots full of an odd assemblage of "roast" offerings (curry anyone?), none which looked appetizing. Winding my way back to the salad area after doing a look-see of the rest of the tired-looking food I opted for the Desert BBQ Chicken Salad ($10) and was immediately put off. A worker plated the chicken part of the order, applied to it a thin BBQ-ish sauce, then handed it to the salad maker but not before he'd personally sampled some of the Mac & Cheese which sat before him. Look, I know that workers eat but I believe that should be done out of sight of customers and not while on active duty. The salad was small relative to the plate size and similar salads elsewhere. They filled the rest of the plate with an oversized piece of grilled bread then plopped that chicken beside the salad as though it was its own separate course. Thank you, but I actually want my chicken to be part of my chicken salad. 86-year old Mama isn't picky in the same ways as me. She had a Grilled Chicken Sandwich on Focaccia ($10) which I thought looked profoundly uninteresting but she thought to be good. I sampled her chosen side salad (included) of tomatoes, mozzarella, and cukes and it tasted as though it wasn't freshly made. So, Urban Plates and I aren't going to go on a second date. I could have called that when I walked in the door and saw the space, the food, the signage... everything, but sometimes you're hungry and you're there. I have tried this place out twice already and I have to say that I am a fan. Am I a huge fan? Probably not. The reasons of my 2 stars deduction are going to be explained in this review. But first I need to talk about the good things about this restaurant. First of all it is a cute restaurant with tons of sittings outdoor and indoor which is great. The staff is super friendly and nice. Compared to panera bread and corner bakery, I think this place offers you more food options with almost same price and bigger portions. The reason that I have given them 3 stars are as follows: I have tried their "cage-free chicken" with veggies that I personally thought that the chicken was not fully cooked. The meat was pink and just tasted weird... Yesterday I took a different route and tried their chicken salad sandwich with beets salad on the side... I thought this plate was very yummy and I think I will for sure get it next time that I visit here. The beets salad was tasty as well and the seasoning was just perfect. My food also came with a side of chips that I thought were a bit too salty. This another reason that I deducted a star. Granted on every table there are pepper and salt shakers available so I don't see any reason why the restauants make their food salty! The bottom line is that everyone should give this place a try. You would not be disappointed... One suggestion to the owner/owners is that it is a good idea to start a rewards card for your customers.. No Urban plates here, more like Urban Red Marker for me to cross out and edit! Upon entering the establishment on a Monday evening, I "ooohed and ahhhed" at the "urban/contemporary" design of the place. Love it! Especially wall art and the spoon collection on the wall near the restrooms. The food set up is fast-casual like many restaurants that have been opening up after Chipotle set it's course. To be exact, one of the employees described it as being in a "cafeteria", hmm... none to appealing, but okay. So grabbing a tray, you can choose fresh salads, soups, plates, sandwiches, or pizza. They all look amazing. Our choices: -Pork braise 3.0 Stars -Grilled wild ono plate w sesame broccolini and roasted rosemary potatoes 3.5 stars -Vegetarian curry -Grilled portobello mushrooms Pork Braise- all I can say is DRY. Braised Pork= Dry, Rice=DRY. Me=Unhappy Ok I can understand that most of the dinners here are very health conscious so I'm sure the cut of pork that is braised must be lean. But the rice, is that cut from a lean grain? Ono Plate- The fish was nicely cooked. Grilled on the outside, raw on the inside, I'm just not so hot about the cilantro-ginger marinade, it didn't really hit my happy bone, Nothing great, nothing bad. Another thing I thought was weird was the broccolini, how come it's overcooked?? Broccolini is one of the most beautiful veggie that doesn't deserve to be shoved in boiling hot water and left there to mush! Okay I exaggerate, it wasn't mushy but it was definitely overcooked. The other two dishes I did not get to try so I will not rate. Another thing that bothered me was that by the time all four of us picked what we wanted and after waiting awhile for a "hand-carved" sandwich, my pork braise was cold =( So I'm not sure if this was because we were in a big group?, 4 people, or I would run into the same issue especially when there's a long ling during rush hour. This is more of a 3.5 rating since they are still working out the kinks for this new eatery in Irvine. It's located in the Crossroad's Shopping Center, Target plaza, directly adjacent to Chase/LA Fitness. Parking can definitely be a challenge especially during peak lunch hours, but if you don't mind walking alittle park more towards the larger LA fitness lot and walk over. My first impression walking in was dayam the line is hella long!! Yes there is one line that splits depending on the type of item you want to order (plates, salad or sandwich). This has got to be one of the most confusing designs i've ever seen as a good 75% didn't know where to go so they have a person standing there guiding traffic flow. The jist is: The right outside line is for SALAD's only! The left inside line is for everything else! Yes they have big signs on top but you may still get confused if this is your first time. Onto the food: If you've ever been to Tender Green's you'll feel right at home. But for those that haven't here's the breakdown of the menu. 1. I got the grilled steak plates with mac n cheese, and potatoes. Overall the meat itself was super tender and seasoned with a nice dry rub. But if you really want some flavor ask for the olive oil dipping sauce! It takes to totally to another level! The mac n cheese was ok though and tasted alil bit like it was from powder since it had that grainy texture to it. This place is trendy and has a lot of options that are in a sort of cafeteria line type of setting. There is indoor and outdoor seating, all self seating. All of the menus are on the walls. When you first come in there will be a separate salad line, then a line for everything else. If it's your first time, they recommend the urban plates, which is what I tried. You choose one meat and 2 sides, and it comes with a side of yummy bread. Mustard salmon is very good and has a flavoring of Dijon mustard, and is a little tangy. Sweet potatoes are very good and come with mushrooms and onions. Brussel sprouts are one of the more popular items, very flavorful, but a little oily for my taste. Still very good though. Mac n cheese was my least favorite, it had white cheese. It wasn't terrible, but not worth the try imo. Overall, a great place that is casual and trendy, and has plenty of healthy options! read more

I agree with the reviewers that say this place is like a hybrid of Lemonade and Tender Greens. I'm indifferent about Lemonade but I'm a huge Tender Greens fan. Farm to table ingredients, freshly prepared food, cafeteria style setup and a large menu. All good stuff. Needless to say I was very excited to try Urban Plates and was stoked that it was so close to my place. Sadly, when you get down to the nitty gritty, Urban Plates might be marginally better than Lemonade, but does not hold a candle to Tender Greens, at least with respect to the items that are available at both places. The steak plate for example was under seasoned and meat quality was lacking. Love the variety in sides, but they were hit or miss. Liked the mashed potatoes, but didn't care for the roasted potatoes, roasted brussels sprouts or mac 'n' cheese. There are several more I need to try though before I can give a final verdict. One thing that I didn't like was no refills policy on the refresher drinks. Lame! Especially considering they are nearly $4. Tender Greens gives free refills on their agua fresca and lemonade. Just sayin'. Overall, I think Urban Plates has a lot of potential and I love the variety. They just need to improve on the execution. 3.5 with potential for more. read more

Urban Plates is a cafeteria style gourmet food restaurant. The majority of the meals cost $10. Some items like the pizza or smaller portions are $5. Yelpers compare this to similar restaurants like Tender Greens and Lemonade, places Stephen and I have also never tried. We came on a late Sunday afternoon at 2:00 and found plenty of parking and must've missed the crowd. We walked in staring at the menu, and a worker asked if it was our first time, we said yes. He explained its like a cafeteria. Grab a silver tray and go to the right for salad and soup, or go to the left for plated food, sandwiches or pizzas. I chose the plate: -free range chicken (looked like 4oz) as my protein. Moist, tender but decent, not overwhelming, with flavor - Mac and cheese as one of my 2 sides. It was cheesy, gooey and good. -fresh fruit cup (melons, pineapple, grapes, watermelon) as my second side. I also added a small cup of free range chicken noodle soup for $3.50. For a little cup, it had chunks of vegetables, curly noodles and chicken. Stephen had the pork braise with brown rice and had a diet cola. He thought the entree was very good, and even thought the soda was decent. He even went back for a drink refill. We shared the vanilla bean cheesecake, which wasn't very heavy. The filling was creamy and the graham cracker crust was nice and crumbly. It's a nice size for 1 person, but I'm not sure if it's $5 worthy. Overall a great experience. The entree price is reasonable, portions are what we "should" eat, and the quality was good. There's a condiment station where you can get salt, pepper, extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar (for the focaccia bread), chili sauces, and fixings for your coffee and tea. read more
