While the tech people get spoiled by fancy-pants cafeterias, the rest of us peasants can live vicariously through all these trendy fast-casual places like Urban Plates, Tender Greens, Lemonade, etc. You even get the hipster decor with Edison bulbs, homey display in ceramic casserole pots, and healthy-eating focused cooking with an international flair. I like Urban Plates for their wide selection: there are salads, soups, entrees, sandwiches, bowls, several enticing desserts, and even beer and wine. What surprised me the most was the kombucha on tap... so extra, in a good way! I got the Moroccan chicken stew over brown rice, and it was definitely wholesome though a bit toned down in terms of spice and dimension (I think I was picky because I just had authentic tagine the night before). They were offering samples of their coconut cake, so we got a nice little dessert too. I tried a piece of boo's flank steak and it was very good; I was also impressed by the schmexy grill marks on the rustic bread. The only catch (at Urban Plates and the other similar establishments) is that their price is on the higher end, especially for what you'd expect for cafeteria-style fare. Your choices are fairly limited if you are trying to stay below $10, and even if you don't get drinks/apps/dessert. If you are decently hungry, expect to spend ~$15-20 for your pseudo-tech-perk-cafeteria experience. read more

The servers were eager to help me out as it was my first time here. There is a line specially for salad and then a line for everything else. I had passed by this place many times and I was always curious as to have the food would be because it was always very crowded, especially during lunchtime. So I finally went yesterday and from the moment I walked in I was in love. The ambience is very casual but yet chic. The interior Decour is very urban earthy, lots of fresh fruit and lemon trees around. The concept is very interesting, there are 2 lines one for salads and another for everything else. Everyone stands in an orderly fashion and they order their food. A chef behind the beautifully designed windows starts to work on the given orders and minutes later BAM your order is ready. I decided to go with half sandwich / half salad combo. I ordered the Chicken Club Sandwich with Cesar Salad. It was such a pleasure watching my order be made right in front of my eyes. I had the flexibility to tell the chef if I wanted more or less of an ingredient, which of course I didn't because I wanted him to make it exactly how he would. He was a pro! After my order was made I walked down to the register which they had different juices. I got iced Honey Lavender Tea. It was delicious!! I sat down and I noticed different bar carts around with lots of olive oils, mustards, ketchup and other sauces and toppings and people would grab them as desired. How convenient!!!! Lastly, I started to dig into my perfect plate. The Chicken Club was so tender and flavorful. I was in heaven with each bite. And the Cesar salad was perfectly dressed and very delicious. Yumz, yummm, and yummier. I can't believe I've passed by this place SO many times and have yet to try it until today. Urban Plates is cafeteria style dining to the next level. Been to Lemonade before and it puts that place to shame! Didn't realize how delicious and fresh cafeteria style food could be! There are 2 lines when you enter, one for salads and one for everything else including sandwiches, entrees and soups. We were told that we would be able to sample any of the dishes that were already made! Went with the recommendations of one of the staff members and got the plate option so that I would be able to try the sides. Each plate comes with choice of 2 sides (which also includes soups as a possible choice) and comes out to around $12-14 depending on your entree. Alternatively you could choose 4 sides for about $12. For entree got the albacore which is served medium rare, think sashimi with a sear! And for sides got the brussels sprouts and tomato basil soup which was topped with delicious pesto sauce. Meal includes a side of grilled bread if you want too. Topped this all off with the cantaloupe/mango/pineapple refresher ($4). Final bill came to $18ish. Yep a bit pricy but quality of lunch is comparable to a nice dinner! Everything was light and bursting with flavor! The tomato basil soup was delicious!! And I don't really even like tomato soup!!!
