Picture this: a strung out drug addict desperate for a fix. That was me following a long day of work. Except in my case I was desperate for a doughnut. Honestly, I was craving a doughnut so badly I might've just killed to get my hands on one. So on my route home I spot this tiny shop on Venice blvd. I figure it'll have to do because I'm far too tired and hangry to go on a junk food expedition. Although I'll admit, I considered making the drive to Randy's. So after popping an illegal u-turn (allegedly) I storm into this place. Dude working the counter was friendly and explained that it had been busy so there wasn't much left. I ended up grabbing a maple frosted and some buttermilk chocolate thing. The maple was delish! The dough was light and airy and the maple frosting wasn't overly sweet. The chocolate thing was underwhelming. The frosting was rich and tasty but the pastry itself was dense and dry. I'd like to come back earlier some other time though! Get a look at the full selection and see if it's as exciting as Randy's.

Preparing for my day of exploring, I had just hopped off the train and was super hungry. Conveniently, this place was just a short walk from the station. I could tell the regulars weren't used to outsiders infringing on their space as one whispered: "She's taking pictures of the donuts" -- like that's the strangest thing you've seen in LA...? Ha! Anyways, the folks working were so nice and helpful. The selection is made up of classic, no-frills donuts. I got a Long John with chocolate icing and a chocolate cake donut with chocolate icing and coconut. Both were delicious and tasted fresh. The coffee was excellent and prices were great! Glad I found this place!

The donuts are not better then Krispy Kreme, but the expresso is cheaper and better then Starbucks. I normally stop by before work.

These are good donuts. Standard flavors, nice fast staff. Just what you want when you are going to grab a dozen for the office.

The unfortunate part was that the sandwich was only a half portion and cost almost $17... The interior/food displays reminded me of Erewhon. I wish I found out about Helms earlier because I know they make amazing pastries!! Sad that they are gone.

Chef Yang Soon began developing the reimagined classic Helms Bakery twelve years ago but could not have anticipated the huge changes that were to hit the dining landscape with the Covid pandemic. The decline of going out / dining out, changes in spending habits and the rise of delivery services made this Art Deco styled concept bakery financially unsustainable. Helms has a fascinating history. In 1932 their bread, Olympic Bread, was declared the official bread of the Olympic Games. This led to worldwide recognition. Delivery wagons, or coaches, brought bread, doughnuts and other baked goods to Angelenos' homes with their slogan, "Daily at Your Door." Helms was the bread that astronauts in Apollo 11 took to the moon. World Famous. I've sampled many items in my several visits (driving all the way to Culver City from the SF Valley.) *Breakfast burrito, $14 *Prosciutto/Persimmon sandwich, $17 *Coffee Cake, $5 *Cherry Pie slice, $12 *Nutella-stuffed cookie, $7 *Oat & Medjool Date cookie, $4.50 *Corn & Caramel cookie, $5 *Pistachio & chocolate cookie, $7 *Pecan Molasses, $5 On previous visits: *Olive Oil Cake *Corn Cake All of the above were made with high-quality ingredients, and thus sold at a high price point. All well-crafted and extremely delicious in my opinion. I will miss this place tremendously. I sincerely hope that Chef makes good on opening a Helms bakery in another location in the near future. I'll drive across town for that! R.I.P Helms original, 1931 - 1969 Helms reimagined, November 2024 / December 14, 2025
