This US post office is very small, but it is full service with P.O. Boxes as well. The service counter allows for two guests if staffed, and has one counter, and a desk top space for packaging and prep. It provides envelopes, boxes, stamps and cards for purchase, and it took care of my needs to get a letter out quickly. The post office is not really identified on front of the building, of which sits on 7th and J Streets downtown, just east of Downtown Commons. Just walk through the double doors, and straight to the back to go through another set of doors into the post office. read more

I like the convenience of this US Post Office located downtown plaza near the courthouse and Sacramento County Jail. It is hidden in the same building as the 24Hr Fitness parking structure but the entrance is on J street. Can be hard to find if you don't know the area. It is a full service post office, with plenty of supplies available for purchase. The ladies working are always friendly and informative. It's never packed and I recommend using shipping here as it's cheaper to ship out of the country compared to FedEx and UPS. So worth it! For all your postal needs downtown, this is a good choice during the daylight hours Monday through Friday. (They're closed on weekends.) Be sure you can withstand the temptation of the ominous Scientology auras as you walk past. I've been coming by on my lunch break if I have a parcel for buddies, be they international or domestic, for years, and am always out with a speed not found at all USPS locations. It is inside of a shared building, but the sign on the pillar outside is a helpful guide. Just come through the double doors and straight back, past the guard station. Though their small shipping center inside can get busy if there is a handful of people in line (keep this in mind for social distancing during this time of the Rona), staff are efficient and helpful. They keep a decent amount of boxes, assorted shipping supplies, gift wrap, and cards for such a tight space too. There is also a secondary foyer with PO Boxes where you could wait, or take a minute to fill out a customs form, if the main area is full of peeps. THE SETUP Let's be blunt: we've all gotten used to MOST (not all, but MOST) post offices being their own, standalone buildings. * I've had a P.O.Box for 27 years in the Ft. Sutter Post Office located at Alhambra between P & Q - and it looks like a Post Office. * I've used it many many times and just got my Passport this past month at the Royal Oaks Post Office. HUGE'ish building. Stand-alone Post Office building. Open much later than any other post office in Sacramento. Collects mail over the weekends. It definitely looks like a Post Office. 660 J STREET But this Post Office - and let's be clear, this is really a Post Office ANNEX - is very much tucked out of the way. = In a private corporate building, with little (heading East down J St)- or no (heading West down J St) - real signage indicating there's a USPS P.O. here = Sandwiched between a Golden One Credit Union Office (which, btw, has GREAT signage on the outside) and some other development corporation on the other side. = You have to actually walk PAST a security desk in the lobby, deep in the entrails of the building = THEN....you're finally there. ROBOUST SET-UP In spite of the fact that this postal annex is small, out of the way, and takes time to zero in on, it has everything you want at a P.O. It has: * Full on postal clerks with full postal services - I had no problem getting my priority mail packages out - and they have since been delivered to their destinations as promised. * People can put mail stops on their mail in this locality and come pick up their held mail. * They even have P.O. Boxes here for you to rent (but, nah, I still like mine over on Alhambra and will keep it) USAGE If you work downtown, this is an ideal P.O. because for most it's conveniently within walking service of our office buildings and kind of takes up the slack of the P.O. that USED to be on I Street between 8th & 9th Streets back in the day. The downside is there really is no place to park around there. Okay. Let me paraphrase that: There is no place to park around there FOR FREE. My perspective? I'm not gonna leverage a small stamp booklet purchase with an almost commensurate parking fee charge. So guess what? If driving, your better bet is the Ft. Conveniently located by the bank, gym, and businesses. It is small and hidden deep inside the building, but the service was great. There are only two people at the counter working, but they are multitasking to ensure everyone is being helped quickly. The post office is one those places I try to avoid but I cannot because they really don't have any nearby competition. The rest of the world usually starts working between the peak hours of 7-9am. I know I start early as well as the rest of the world. I despise going to post office for three valid reasons: * You open at 10am on a weekday?! Good God! Half the day has gone by the time you're open. I walked several blocks and you're not open. Now I have to wait. I got crap to do. * You manage to successfully lose my mail in less than 8 hours last December. It was initially delivered to my home. I wasn't there to sign for it so it was returned to this location for me to pick up but I only had one of two boxes given to me. You guys managed to lose the second box! How in the world does that happen? You guys have a very easy job to do. You don't need a Ph.D. *The post office should be opened earlier. You guys are just nothing but disappointment. I never like coming here. The post office should be bought by a private company and surely things will be better. The location is in a horrible location. I often frequent this post office in order to mail merchandise for my significant other's business. I'm generally mailing roughly 10 packages per visit, so I feel for the clerk that has to assist me. Luckily, every single clerk at this location is extremely friendly and patient. Generally I'm assisted by a jolly fella by the name of Tim (African-American guy with glasses). A couple of weeks ago I came with a cart full of packages. Tim saw my load (get your mind out of the gutter), and signaled for me to come to the counter. At this moment, his co-worker took off for lunch (leaving Tim as the lone clerk). While assisting me, the line grew quickly. He acknowledged each individual in line and informed them that he would assist them as quickly as possible. For individuals who need to see great customer service in action, come to this post office. My only complaint (and it's hardly a complaint) is that the parking surrounding the post office is horrendous! Due to the construction of the new Kings arena, a lot of the normally available parking is often occupied by construction equipment/vehicles. You would never know it's here. I found it by address and not by any indicating signs on the building. It's a nice building and the post office has a little space in it. You can see it from the entrance. It's straight back. I had to pick up a package and I don't know if it's always like this but it gets hot in there. The downtown post office has a new look and new location around the corner of the downtown plaza at 6th & J Street. When you enter, there is a security guard who greets you and there is a seating lounge with couches and chairs--giving the place a more upscale vibe. During lunch hour, there were several customers waiting in-line and there was one clerk working the register but I was able to buy my stamps and finish my business within ten minutes. Did you know that you can avoid paying for an envelope if you are shipping something via Priority Mail? I did not. I was shipping some jeans and bought an envelope I did not need. The jeans were going to ship Priority regardless. Lesson learned for $2.29. Oh well. What makes me happy is that Rico tried to save me money by telling me this as I paid. He said I could always ask questions and had he known what I was trying to do he would have saved me the hassle. Rico was great to work with and was very welcoming. He was nice, cheerful, and very helpful. This experience was very dissimilar from many Post Office experiences I've had. It was not crowded - even though I was in at 4 on a Friday afternoon - and was very stress free. I left work early because I was anticipating a 30-minute ordeal. Nope! In and out without any sweat beads on my forehead. Kudos!! This office is in a great, convenient location in the heart of downtown Sacramento. I'll be saving all my business for this location the next time I need to send something. (This office was previously understaffed. The most inconvenient post office. its hampered by being the Kings Exec building with all the draconian rules that the Kings place on this Post Office. Sac Kings have no respect for the post office. No access to PO box on Sundays which is a rule without any good reason. Security their nags you like dictating to tuck in your shirt or walk slower. There are long lines. If walking it is just a doorway down from the Golden One Credit Union which is corner of J Street and 7th Street downtown. The light rail is very near if you are on the rail line. If walking downtown already it is easy to miss the doorway of this post office as it is not a big sign. It is a small area in the rear as you enter through an entirely glass very large front wall of the building; keep walking to the very rear and there is the USPO. Has boxes to rent, greeting cards, the spectrum of boxes and bags of all kinds to suit what you are mailing out, line moves pretty quickly unless someone has a funny situation. Most of the time it's great and I have used this PO to mail packages back and forth for years now, but when I say I did, people say: "Where is that PO?". Again, it is by corner J St/7th St, find Golden 1 CU, keep walking it's there 600 block of J Street. Enjoy the nice service and sssshh apparently it's a well kept secret where this USPO is! Not now! I live in Midtown and missed a package. The pink slip they left said I could pick up my package anytime today after 9 am. I arrive at 9:30. The post office doesn't open until 10 it turns out, but the door says pickups between 9 am and 5 pm. I entered the P.O. Box area & rang the doorbell. I waited & waited & waited. No one answered. Why write on your pink slip something that isn't true? Apparently you can't get your package until 10. The UPS of Sacramento overall is fairly useless, unhelpful, & frustrating. I have had bad expierenced at Royal Oaks numerous times, and usually have to fight long lines with only 1 employee at the downtown location. When someone does help you here they are usually fairly nice but they don't make anything easy. Overall come here only if you have to knowing the staff is nice but the wait will be long. read more

I reserved and paid for a PO box online at this post office and brought in the application and two forms of ID that the USPS told me to bring with me to get the keys. The confirmation email indicated that it was my receipt, but DID NOT SAY I NEEDED TO BRING A COPY TO THE POST OFFICE, just the application. When I got to the post office, I was told I needed to go home and print the email otherwise I couldn't get my PO box I'd paid for. I had it on my phone, but she wouldn't even look at it. If you need to spike your blood pressure, or hide-out for awhile, this is the place to go. If you want to mail something, you'd get it there quicker walking it yourself. I just went in and couldn't imagine my luck, I was the second person in line. It took 30 minutes to mail a small parcel in a pre-paid envelope. With 7 people in line, the tediously slow clerk was asked by a co-worker if she needed help, the clerk surveyed the lobby, the line going through the door and said, "no, it's not busy." Never thought I'd write a review for a post office, but here I am. To temper expectations, let's be real, this is a post office. Like any post office, UPS, or Fed Ex, there will be lines. There might be only one person working during your lunch hour. It's warm in there. But one of the clerks, Tim, deserves a special shout out. He was friendly and funny, and he saved me money by pointing out that I had my mail in a flat rate envelope, but because it was going local (to SF), he swapped it out for the correct one, saving me from mistakenly paying about $5 more. I hate going to the post office but after going to three and not being able to find the stamps I wanted for my wedding invitations, I decided to try this one. It's about 11 blocks away from my work place and it was a much farther walk than I anticipated on a 15 minute break. Nevertheless, it was well worth the time. As soon as I walked I, I could see a long line but the line moved quickly. The guys that worked there were quick, efficient, and extremely helpful. This post is horrible. I havent received mail in over two weeks. I have gone in several times and no one can tell me why. Ive even had mail returned for no apparent reason. First they said my name wasnt labeled on the box. Then after they labeled it the guy there told me the label wasnt too visible. I decided to use this location because it is close to the County courthouse. The security person posted at the building's entrance is reassuring. The employees also went out of their way to assist people. In fact one gentleman provided me added information to make sure I wasn't paying for more than what I wanted. In this age of high-pressure, superficial sales it was refreshing to experience some "old-school" customer service, where the customer's needs are more important than just doing the minimum required to get paid. Plus the air conditioning was very refreshing in the middle of Sacramento's sweltering heat. I went to the post office to send a package. A friend employee saved me money and was helpful. Like many, I had to move to the side to fill out my info. Well this employee was helping a lady, the line was growing. The lady was unsure what she wanted, Did not mind keeping us waiting. The employee waited, then asked the lady to let the next person go while she find out what she wants. Wow. The lady snapped on him saying don't be rude. He waits what seems like 3 minute. Only reason for the second star is the proximity to my workplace. Went to get holiday stamps. Very poor selection and did not have the holiday stamps released for this calendar year. I mailed my one letter and left without making my large stamp purchase. Also, bad customer service. Staff is rude to customers and each other. Witnessed a staff person roll her eyes and shake her head at her coworker (who, granted, was slow, and may have some issues being able to multitask, but it is not professional be disrespectful, especially in front of customers). Staff refused to answer a customer's question about the appropriate labels for her boxes, that she had just been in line for, and had paid for the shipping supplies. Surely they could have told her the correct label to use when she was at the counter. The customer left without any labels. read more

Sooooo. I work basically the same hours the post office is open. I use to have no problems going in through the lobby and getting my mail from my po Box. However I have been removed twice from the lobby because they will not let me go to the lobby to get my mail. They state that the post office is closed and I have no way of getting my mail. However I have been for the last year. I had a security guard threaten to have me arrested if I tried to come in again. I argued that they have a door that is unlocked and I was told I could get my mail after hours. The building security is a joke and blocked me from getting my federal protected mail.
