Amazing plates, including full size fish, enough for 2 people. Even basic dishes were filling. No one went away hungry. The only drawback is the lack of parking. Take 5 extra minutes to find a spot on the street or in the nearby post office parking lot which closes before dinner. Quite literally a hidden gem of a restaurant tucked away next to an apartment complex. The food and service was some of the best I've gotten out of a restaurant in a long time. Promptly seated and quickly attended to, a large variety of food on the menu to choose from, and a welcoming environment about sum up the experience here. Ordered the camarones a la crema (shrimp in a cream based sauce) along with chicken milanesa. Both dishes did not disappoint and my favorite was easily the milanesa which is often a hit or miss depending on who makes it. The only downside of the restaurant is the location. My tab was 78$ total and I paid with my debit card, wrote down a $5.00 tip. 3 days later I got charged $128. The waitress took it upon herself to add an extra 0 to make it a 50.00$ tip on a 78$ tab. Guess times are hard now days that you have to scam your own regular customers. Very disappointed. Vallarta had been on my list for a while now so I decided to stop by and give it a shot since I was in the area. I experienced crappy service with even crappier food. There was no type of acknowledgment upon my arrival despite the restaurant not being busy at all and it wasn't until about 5 minutes of me standing there, that I flagged a waitress down and she told me to grab whatever seat I wanted. I ended up getting a ceviche tostada and an octopus/shrimp cocktail. The ceviche is probably the worst I have ever had. It was just blanched shrimp w veggies w no sort of real flavor. As a Mexican, I'm use to ceviche having shrimp (or fish etc) marinated/cured in lime juice, not boiled! In that case, I would have been better off going to Costco and getting the appetizer shrimp w cocktail sauce they have there instead. It was super expensive too... $13 for one tostada??? Oh heck nooo! I've had ahí grade sushi tostadas for that same price at other places and it comes with 2 of them!! I was hoping the shrimp/octopus cocktail would be better and although it kind of was, it really wasn't nothing to rave about. They served it to me with only octopus and when I told the waiter that I had ordered both shrimp and octopus he said that I had not. I asked if I could please return it so they could make it right and he said that since I had already touched it, they couldn't take it back. Whaaaat? Are you kidding me? Anyways, I'm not one to argue or make a scene so I just let it be and ate it. It was just ok. Seemed more watered down instead of the traditional shrimp stock taste. It was more palatable after adding lots of lemon and hot sauce but I wouldn't go back for it. In fact, I wouldn't go back at all given there are so many other better places in the Bay Area. We have been here a few times with mixed results. Like any restaurant they have their strengths and weaknesses. If quantity is your thing you will get your money's worth. In some cases quantity and quality cross over. Our experience has fajitas, Chile relleno and green chili enchiladas at the top of our list. Chile Colorado while great in the flavor department is foiled by tough steak. Salsa is really good and adding their habanero sauce to the salsa takes it to a another level. They specialize in seafood but what I have ordered is not special. There is just a lot of it. Flour tortillas are house made and awsum. Definitely worth a visit. The decor is quite impressive and they keep the place spotless. Service is also very good. My only issues is all of your food arrives at different times. We bet on who will get their meal first. Parking is a issue. There is only one handicap parking spot available. It's on the street which is near Condo's who use it for parking. Across the street is a option. This is probably my favorite Mexican food spot in San Leandro. I have been here multiple times and have not had a bad experience. The staff are super friendly and attentive, they will always refill your chip basket if you ask nicely, and the food is delicious! They are known for their seafood, so I have tried their fish and shrimp ceviche tostados. They definitely know how to make a good batch of ceviche every time. Fresh fish and shrimp is a must and the food shows that it is! The last time I went, I got the two tacos with carne asada which comes with a side of refried beans and rice. I honestly have not ordered a dish from here and disliked it! It's always a lot of food and the quality of the meals are superb. Not the cheapest for its cuisine, but to me, quality is important. This place is family owned and it shows. The decor can be eccentric depending on the time of the year (holidays especially). Arrived around 8:40 on a Friday night and was told it was a 10 minute wait (keep in mind they close at 10) after waiting outside for 45 minutes - we were finally seated (9:30ish) we skimmed the menu and quickly placed our orders before the kitchen closed. Although closing, service was attentive. As for the food, I can't believe $25 for 6 SHRIMPS? We both ordered shrimp plates (camarones a la Diabla & camarones empanizados) both plates $25 and only 6 shrimps in each plate... Needless to say, after drinks and our plates we spent $150 and left hungry.. The atmosphere and service was great other than the extensive wait time but the food is not worth the price...
