We had the lobster topped steak perfectly cooked to medium. We added a bottle of J Pinot. Perfect pairing. You also have to try the lemon cello cake and lemon drop martinis. Yum! Before our short vacation to Aquidneck Island, I checked out the reviews for various restaurants in both Portsmouth and Middletown. Valley Inn caught my attention both for the high ratings and the fact that a small stuffed quahog (aka stuffie) was included with entrees. We found the restaurant situated in the cellar of an older house a bit creepy though we quickly settled in. Each of use chose swordfish as entree served over mashed potatoes and crispy asparagus. Also included were 2 dinner rolls, a high quality salad and aforementioned stuffie. The pieces of swordfish were almost enough to serve two and perfectly prepared. read more

Featured on Season 5 Episode 3 of Kindred Spirits, this place has a historic "ghost story" associated with it. I had the place recommended to me for that reason, but I've since returned for how good the food is. The best steak I've had in years! Absolutely horrible!!!!! we got Caesar salads with grilled salmon and it was by far the worst meal I've ever had. The salmon was unseasoned and undercooked, there were no croutons or cheese in the salad just lettuce and the dressing tasted like ranch. I called them to try to talk to the manager and he was absolutely obnoxious to me. I sent him pictures of the food to his cell phone (he gave me the number) and he never responded. read more

Don't judge a book by its cover is the only way to explain the Valley Inn restaurant. I was actually scared when we pulled in. Then you find the correct door to enter and find yourself in this weirdly bewitching realm. It feels like you entered a fifth dimension of WW1. Dark, Heavy Wood Beams, Brick walls and ancient fire place. Patrons at the bar talking a little treason and a a young bartender name Michael who can mix a perfect Sapphire Gin Martini. Turns out Michael and his brother are the sons of the 2nd owner Joe who is more than happy to tell you the story of the restaurant being featured on a show called Kindred Spirit and the tale of a murder and a ghost that took place in the 1600's involving the early ancestors of the Cornell family. Now, if coming in just for a drink and a story are not enough for you then come in for the food. At least what we had. Hubby had lobster ravioli and I had swordfish. The sauce was incredible with pieces of lobster and the raviolis were a tender nice pouches of lobster filling. My swordfish had a paprika crust and was cooked to perfection. I don't know if the martini kicked in but the mashed potatoes turned into crack and I almost ordered a side. The lady next to us had a giant pizza and it looked really good. It was rolled out square and thin and looked like it had a good cook on the carriage. We will definitely be back. read more

We have driven by this place 100 times and finally tried it. I have to be honest, the haunted stories intrigued us so we had to try it. We had an inviting seat by the wood burning fireplace which was so welcoming and cozy. My husband had the Lobster Ravioli and I had the Pork Chop. Both meals come with a stuffed quahog and choice of soup or salad, we both had the French onion soup which was delicious. We both enjoyed our meals, they were cooked and seasoned very well, the pork chop was huge so I took home leftovers. Our server was very attentive and quick. There was live entertainment and he was very good! The only disappointment was that we didn't get to see any haunted happenings, lol. read more

This is a great restaurant. I have driven by this restaurant so many time and always noticed on the weekend evenings the parking lot was always packed. I brought my parents here to celebrate my dads birthday and it was a hit! The atmosphere was homey, and everyone was so friendly. The food was great. Each entree came with bread, a stuffed quahog, soup and salad. Also the entree sizes were massive. The good quality and taste was great. It was so good that the following weekend I went back there with my co-workers. I highly recommend this restaurant if you are looking for casual dining with a comfy/homey atmosphere. read more

We had a fantastic experience. First of all, the food was great. Our entrees included steak salads, pasta, and pizza - all generous in amount and delicious. The food and drinks came quickly with no waiting. We finished with a limoncello cake - a perfect end to a wonderful dinner. All four of us are descendants of the Cornell family. Joe Occhi, the owner, spent an hour or more chatting with us about the history of the family and the house and his adventures with other Cornell descendants and "ghost hunters". It was so much fun. Hands down one of the best steaks I've had in years!! The filet mignon melted in my mouth and was cooked a perfect medium rare. HIGHLY recommend this place if you love steak like I do! We are lifelong Portsmouth residents and ate at the Valley Inn once about 45 years ago. Passed by it innumerable times but never thought about going. My sister in law raved about just before Covid shut everything down; the pizza and lobster ravioli were her faves. Well since we now getting out more, we decided to take the in-laws to dinner at the Valley Inn. It was wonderful. I made reservations for 6 people and our table was ready when we arrived. We were greeted by the owner who took our drink orders: a Manhattan, Vanilla martinis, beer, wine and single malt scotch, all delicious. Our entrees came with bread, a stuffed, soup (French onion for my husband) or salad (Caesar for the rest of us). Two of had the steak au poivre, one had salmon, one spaghetti with meat sauce, one Frutti di Mare and husband had swordfish. All very flavorful, huge portions (we all took some home) and nice presentation. Service was excellent- water glasses were constantly refilled and drinks came as ordered. The whole meal took about two hours, which I enjoyed because the evening wasn't rushed. I can't believe it took us so long to revisit this great place. The atmosphere is warm, cozy and inviting. My husband and I will be visiting more frequently now! read more

Interesting place. My family and I have lived on the island for 5 years and drive by this place a lot. I have not met anyone that has ever gone here but the Yelp reviews intrigued me so we decided to try it out. Inside is not what I would have expected based on the condition of the outside. The inside was rustic and quite inviting. They had a couple of large parties and some regulars at the bar. We were greeted by the hostess and also by the owner??? Everyone was really hospitable and made you feel at ease. The owner tool our drink orders and they arrived promptly. I ordered a manhattan and it was made very well. My wife ordered the signature cosmo and it was also quite well made. They told us that there would be a short wait for the food as their kitchen was backed up. We were like OK...let's see how this turns out. My wife and I ordered steaks and the kids had a couple of different pasta dishes. The wait until the first appetizer was not long at all. They started with stuffed quahogs which were surprisingly excellent. I was like...OK this could be good. The french onion soup and salad and warm bread were all pretty tasty. I really wanted to check out the steak. I don't eat it often but when I do; I want good meat and prepared bloody rare. The steaks came out. I was like that is a HUGE piece of meat. I cut into it and it was perfectly rare. It tasted amazing. Mushroom sauce was scratch made...not overly thickened with flour. I waited a bit for my glass of vino and the owner apologized and said it would be on the house. I was truly amazed at the quality of the food. We got the bill and we were shocked as to how reasonable it was. The bad.... There is WAAAAAYYY too much food. I took half my steak home. Phenomenal. My family and I ate here for dinner and will gladly go back. To start, the service was awesome. Prompt, friendly, professional, and personable. The owner was making his rounds as well and it added a very nice and personal touch. The food was absolutely killer; the kitchen staff crushed it. To start, the stuffed quahog was amazing and the main courses were the perfect follow up. In particular, I had the lobster stuffed steak and it was perfect! The steak was cooked perfectly and the butter from the lobster added an exceptional level of flavor. I highly recommend going; mid week if you can. Going at opening on a Tuesday night meant it was a bit slower pace inside and we enjoyed that. What a Hidden treasure. This place is very cool spot. If you go in on the left side there is a great restaurant bar. We were extremely impressed with the food and the prices. Their entrées are huge. If you order entrée you get a salad, a bread roll, a stuffy, a cuppa soup, and your main dish! The steak Au Poivre is outstanding . I could only get through half of it. We loved it. Joe was very nice and helpful with our decisions on what your drink. He's very knowledgeable. And everyone seems to know him. The bartender Amie was the BEST! She made Our experience memorable! We drove by this restaurant half dozen times during our week stay in Newport. We ate at numerous local restaurants- some with harbor viewed, some favored by locals...Valley Inn was our favorite! Don't be fooled by the exterior. As you walk in the restaurant the ambiance will amaze you with its 400 year old brick walls and arches. Very Romantic! We were warmly greeted, seated at a table near a window with a lovely view. There were also tables and bar seating in cozy alcoves. The owner stopped by our table to check on us. Bead and wine were quickly served as we pondered the primarily Italian menu and ordered Shrimp Scampi and Frutti di Mare with little necks, shrimp and scallops. We've been meaning to try Valley Inn for years, but were out off by the rundown exterior. Imagine our delight in entering the building and finding a charmingly decorated, warm main room. Our server, though young (summer job?), did a fine job and the kitchen got our food out promptly. Now, about the food: what a treat! Our appetizers were excellent, as were our entrees. I had the swordfish, and it ranked among the very best interpretations of that dish that I have sampled. My wife went for the chicken marsala - also excellent. One of my boys went with the kids' pasta, since he wasn't feeling very hungry. The serving was easily large enough for an adult, and he took some home. The other boy ordered a pizza, thinking we could always take the leftovers home. It looked and smelled very inviting, and I'm looking forward to pizza for breakfast tomorrow morning. Even the bill was a pleasant surprise. I thought the cost for a family of four was quite reasonable. In short, I only regret that we waited so long to try Valley Inn. Their pizza is amazing, just the right crispness and gooey toppings. You wouldn't expect such awesome pizza but it worth driving out of your way to try it. What can I say about this restaurant? A group of 4 of us visited this place for our first time on March 2 originally solely for the supernatural history of this specific location. What we walked away with was the dinner of dinners. Not only does this place have a great menu, but the entrees are accompanying with several courses including a soup or salad (the french onion soup is terrific.), fresh Italian bakery bread, a quahog, and finally the meal which comes with vegetable and potato. The owner came by to grab our drink order very quickly; drinks came out fast. The wait time between courses was great; we did not feel rushed. When the meals came out, the owner stopped by to tell the history of the location and other incredible morsels which were enjoyable to learn. I will not divulge any of the stories so one may indulge themselves. The owner's son was the chef and the food was superb. The Chef does exceptionally well for serving a restaurant that seats over 100 and single handily touches every plate. Take that into consideration. When your satisfied with service & food, you write a review. My brother and our wives visited Portsmouth on a vacation from Long Island and were looking for a restaurant for dinner. We were about to turn back off Main street and head back towards Newport when we noticed the Valley Inn Restaurant sign. This cozy restaurant turned out to be a great find. We were greeted by the host Joe who appeared surprised to see us. Turns out most visitors are locals. The ambiance was welcoming and charming. The food and service were exceptional. Our host Joe was quite hospitable. Made us feel at home. Recommended a new wine for us to try. StoryPoint Cabernet. Which turned out to be a favorite of ours. The place has a history which only Joe can tell the story if you ask him. A mysterious incident that happened in the year 1673. The age of the house. While you have Joe's attention, ask him about who built the restaurant section. Find out where the ceiling came from. Ask about the wine display and what each bottle is encased in. Then go look at the bar table surface. Joe will tell you where that came from as well. And how it was made to create that surface. Unreal. While your there check out the view towards the Lawton Valley reservoir. When we return to Portsmouth, we'll be eating here. One of the best restaurants in Rhode Island. So my husband and I have passed this place hundreds of times in the past 4 years on our way to Newport and always wondered what it was like. We finally stopped in for dinner today and I am so glad that we did. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but like the old saying goes, don't judge a book by it's cover. We were greeted by Joe (the owner) who made us feel at home and welcomed. It's a rustic setting with ample space, a comfortable bar and tables with plenty of room. The drinks were generous on the alcohol and the food was fantastic. My filet was as good as any I've had. The buffalo chicken pizza was delicious with a perfect crust. Entrees include a stuffed quahog (stuffie) which was served piping hot and was so moist it didn't need butter, bread and soup or salad. The restaurant is attached to a very old (1600s) home with a history of being haunted and we were treated to a history of it by Joe. Massive portions , good pizza but pretty mediocre food. Again portions are enormous which isn't really a great thing because food wasn't great.
