One of the worst experiences of my life. I had rented a couple of their cars for about a year. Because of extenuating circumstances, I had requested that Maryam, one of the owners come down and pick up the car when I was finished renting it. I live in Santa Monica and it was on the way back to their home. We had an appointment Monday at 6 p.m. 6 p.m. came and went and I was waiting in the hot car. I called her and she told me she was going to be 30 minutes late. She could have let me know this instead of having me wait and not know what was going on... wasting my precious time. Very disrespectful. She came to pick up the car with her husband. She got in the car and I was talking to her and she slammed the door of the car that opened it and looked like she was going to physically attack me. I started to walk away from her because I didn't want an altercation. And I didn't want to be physically hit and have to sue her. She started calling me names and was screaming and yelling at me like a crazy person. Very unprofessional and very low class. I was in shock. I didn't stoop to her level and I just said, " Have a nice night." I was in shock. Seriously. There is something wrong with this woman. There is a screw loose, No Holds Barred. Plus without communicating that she would charge me $100 to come down to Santa Monica, she handed me a bill that said $100 is what I owe her for her coming down to Santa Monica. Throughout the whole time I rented the cars, she kept adding little charges here and there that didn't seem right and were very questionable... She also has a homeless man that she freely admits that lives at her place of business and works for her. This is not allowable in a work business situation in a business neighborhood.... Horrendous, Unprofessional, Liars, Rude, Lazy, and Unhelpful are just some of the words I would use to describe this operation, AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! Read on and I will explain why.. Our woeful experience with this place started at the weekend, about 2.30pm to be exact when the drivers side wing mirror came off our car and we needed to rent a car until it was fixed as we had an important trip to the airport to make that night. The likes of Enterprise and Hertz had just closed but we noticed Value Rental Car Inc next to Hertz on Colorado was open and so we had little option but to go there and enquire about a rental car for a day. We went into the shack and asked if we could rent a car for a day and asked how much would it be. We were ushered into a room to speak with a lady who advised it would be $25 for the day plus $9.99 insurance, which seemed fine and reasonable for a compact sized car. We were then taken out and given the keys to the car (Toyota Matrix) which was covered in dirt and as she walked us around the car she was mumbling in a language somewhere between English and Persian which was very hard to understand. It wasn't long before the troubles began and the alarm on the car would go off at random times for no reason. This happened numerous times in the afternoon and when we went out to the car ready to pick somebody up from LAX airport the alarm again went off, and when we tried to turn it off the buttons on the key fob didn't work and when we put the key into the ignition to turn the engine on the anti theft enabled and the vehicle immobilised, leaving the key stuck in the vehicle. The alarm eventually went off but it meant my sister had to drive to the airport in her small 2 seater without a wing mirror while I stood by the car. We eventually managed to get the key out and turn the anti theft off but this problem re-occured again the following morning. The car also had severely warped brake discs which meant whenever we braked, especially at freeway speeds, it would cause violent shuddering. We went to return the vehicle the next day as planned but got there to find the place shut. The papers we had said they would be open 11am-2pm and when we rang the owner he said they had 'decided to close', and from the background noises he was clearly at a BBQ. He told us to leave the car at the rear of the building and post the key in their box which was absolutely no help because we had no way of getting back once we had dropped the vehicle off - they told us the previous day they would provide a pick up and drop off service. We had little option but to keep the vehicle for another day until they were open and so rang the owner back to advise as we would be stranded we would have to keep the wreck for 1 more day. So on the Monday and after more malfunctioning alarm problems we took the vehicle back and tried explaining to them the troubles we had with it. The woman showed little sympathy and got defensive very quickly. She said she told us the alarm was temperamental and they key fob didnt work, and she also said she told us that they would be shut on Sunday. Neither me or my sister recalled hearing anything of the sort and this was backed up by the woman contradicting herself by then claiming she had never encountered any problems with the alarm and claimed we told her we wanted the vehicle for 2 days when we picked it up. These were lies but she seemed very comfortable making up the story and happily contradicting herself instead of focusing on providing a professional service and addressing the complaints/problems encountered. When I said we only ever wanted the car for a day due to the wing mirror incident and needing to pick up somebody from the airport the owner came in speaking a foreign language and told the woman we had told him we needed the car an extra day and told him we wanted to keep that vehicle. This again was a blatant lie. They did little to help and refused to discount the rates and charged us for the full two days which we did not want but were forced to have the vehicle for because they decided to have a family BBQ. I did spend sometimes wondering why people would go to Hertz or Enterprise when you can get a similar car for $10 a day less at this place, but now I know why. It's because this place is a rent-a-wreck and totally unprofessional. The cars aren't even clean and I doubt they go through any kind of service judging by the brake discs on the car we rented. We decided to rent a car for a further 2 days but went to Hertz who sympathised with us, upgraded our vehicle for us free of charge and advised it wasn't the first bad experience they had heard from their criminal neighbours. read more

I'll be nice and give them two stars since this is a family run business and the woman helping us was friendly. However, the prices were not great and they advertised a $19 rate but when we got there she showed us the cars for that rate and they were disgusting. So we had to upgrade and pay $29 a day for a run down, SMELLY, older car. While I am thankful it did not break down on us and I am still not pleased with the quality of their cars. I have a feeling these cars are for sell, but they rent them out. To be honest, I do no think I will return. ;-( read more

These guys are fine, and as advertised, a good value for your money. I've dealt with one of the co-owners (a woman) twice and she has always been straight-forward and fair with me. Often the cars she rents have something small wrong with them, which she discloses before you choose the car. Many of the cars look great from 5 feet, but up close you can tell they've been spray painted. Very good value for the price, and were kind enough to hold a car significantly longer than they promised one day. read more

This place is an excellent alternative to the national chains, especially if you don't fit the criteria to rent from those chains. My daughter needed a rental while her car was in the shop and since she is not 21, her options were limited. She found this place and off we went. Value Rent a Car has always been great to me. For $20 I always get a clean, functional car; can't argue with that price! I could spend $10 on day passes for the bus and train, or I could spend $20 and get a car. If you want to get a bigger car it's still very reasonable too. DO NOT RENT HERE!! They will scam you out of your money. I rented a car here for 5 days. The first day I turned the car off to run into CVS for 10 min and I come back to the car and it was dead. I call them and they send the Mechanic 5 hours later so I'm waiting for them that whole time and they give me an extra day. On the third day, I start the car and the engine is shaking the whole car and making a bunch of sounds and the whole car feels like it's about to break down in the middle of the highway. I call the female manager and she insists on me coming in for another repair. I ask her how long it will take she tells me hopefully not long but either way you need to bring it in because we don't want it breaking down on you. We will trade you for a newer car So I said okay. I get there and she's no where to be found. Apparently she is working from home which she did not tell me. So the mechanic says I need to sit there until they fix the car. Again, I lose 4 hours waiting for them to fix the car. I call and ask her for an extra day for the lost time and she says "no I don't just be giving free days out like that" there is nothing free about me paying money for a car For a certain amount of time and it does not work. She stole a day from me because she gave me a crappy car that broke down twice. I had important things to do that's why I rented the car. When I asked her for partial refund she said no there's nothing she could do for me. We are in America. In what world do you buy something and don't get your money back when it comes broken? I will never go back to this company again these are the kinds of issues that you run into with independently owned car rental places. just go to a corporate car rental place. Renter BEWARE!!!! FIRST OFF, DO NOT RENT FROM THIS PREDATORY ESTABLISHMENT! I only rented a Vehicle for One day and was charged over $500. When I returned Toyota Corolla the following day, Miriam, so called Mgr. stated I would be charged for early return of $100. And she gave an excuse that she had to turn customers away because she didnt have vehicles. I informed her that this particular vehicle felt cramped and uncomfortable driving. She insisted there was a Camry I could have got instead. If that was true no one showed me another option. In fact she did everything over the phone. Not in person. Other employee stated to me that was the only vehicle that was cleaned and ready to rent and I had arrived right before closing time. I did not even have this vehicle for 24hrs. At first site the lot is filled with damaged vehicles, resembling a old tow yard of wrecked vehicles. Not a good look for business. Vehicles reeked of B.O., stains, and scratches and body damage. Substandard vehicles being rented for $50 a day. I was also charged $12 for apparently going over mileage which is apparently 100 miles a day. Ok? , cleaning fee of $10, If you charge customes cleaning fee, why not give customers clean vehicles from the start?! Then a charge for damage waiver of $15 which is assumed insurance coverage per day, sales tax of $6.41, and rental fee of 2.50?! . Total charges of 171.41. And apparently Miriam stated I would be refunded the difference from the initial $542.56. So In a few days I should be expecting. a credit of $371.15. Someone please explain to me how this makes sense. Consumer Affairs will be contacted. As well as Better Business Bureau. Never Again!!!! read more

We have used them 3 times. They saved us $7.00 a day from the mechanic's referral special rate. That adds up when you need a car for a long period on and off and can't commit to a week. They are a mom and pop place and rent repaired wrecks. Keep that in mind when you inspect your car. They will work with you if you work with them and have always been nice. When I arrived to pick up the vehicle I had booked, I was greeted by the manager Maryam. When she realised that I was from Sydney Australia she gave me a free upgrade without further charges from a small toyota corolla to a mid sized toyota camry! Which was great! I could choose any type of insurance that I wanted, which I picked comprehensive of course. I rented this vehicle for 30 days and it was trouble free motoring. I am extremely happy with the service I received from this lady. She was very easy to deal with and when I returned the vehicle, I had driven more miles than I was supposed to and Maryam waved the extra fee. My $350 cash deposit was fully refunded and furthermore she saved me an extra $30 for the price of a shuttle to take me to L.A.X. I absolutely recommend Value Car Rentals to anyone looking to rent a vehicle. Maryam I cannot thank you enough for your hospitality and I will see you in about 2 months as i need to return to do my fingerprints and photo for my green card! Horrible business. They are Not there to help people, the owner is very unprofessional! My appointment was at 10am and she wasn't there, the place was closed. I try calling nobody answered, I than got a called back till 11am saying there was no cars available yet, but I had gotten a confirmation online? Saying my car would be ready and the amount that was due upfront. That was a lie!! Owner never showed up I stood there till 1120am and messed up my whole work week! I think the people at Value Rental Car are nice sales people. They give great prices on rental cars. Their vehicles may or may not be the latest models, but they do maintenence on their vehicles as needed. When I rent cars from them, I usually do not have a problem and when I bought a used vehicle from them, if I needed a quick simple fixin', there was little or no charge at all. While on vacation, we needed a car for a few days. We tried Enterprise and they gave us a big run-around, so we walked down the street and saw this place, and decided to check them out. I'm so glad we did! They were very friendly and the prices were fair. They gave us plenty of miles to do the things we had planned to do. The car was a few years old, and definitely had some wear and tear (which is why I couldn't give a "perfect" score). But it got us from point A to point B, and that's really all we cared about. They are very bad! The owner that looks like Maxican forced me to pay money!!!!!!! I made a reservation for next day, and ordered a white Toyota Carrola. When I puck up next day I didn't see that car, the owner arranged a very poor car for me, it's still 120 dollars two days the same price as CArrola! The car is poor can't drive! The engine oil has run out when I drove it! I puted more gas in the car, the owner refused to refund me more money! The total he forced me to pay 160 more dollars for the car!!! He knocked my debit card, I said wait, he still swiped my card!!! I really angry, I wanted to call police to help me!!! I'm really shocked with all the bad reviews for this business, since my experience with them was nothing close to anything being written about them here. I've rented cars from them on few occasions, and will continue to conduct business with them when necessary in the future. I usually call Maryam and tell her what my budget is and how long I need the rental for, she always exceeds my expectations. Not only is she nice, sweet and professional, she is also very understanding when it comes to my budget. Once I couldn't afford to pay the asked price for the car i wanted, she was able to find another vehicle with the same features but in my budget. You can't get that level of service at bigger companies like Hertz or Enterprise. Those companies are not flexible with their prices or their cars, they have set prices for each of their cars and they could care less if you rent with them or not. But Value Rental Car does everything in their power,whether its with their offers or their customer service, to earn your business and to also keep you as a long term customer. The cars are old, but if your car's in the shop and you need a loaner, this place is cheap and serviceable. I was surprised that a reviewer felt the owners were dishonest, as my dealings have been straightforward all three times I've rented. A friend also had a service problem once, but they cleared it up right away by switching out the car. I suppose, given the age of the Corollas they rent, it's always possible there will be problems. Be sure to get detailed information about your rental and pricing. The cars that are available look nothing like the ones advertised on the website. There's definitely going to be something wrong with it.Also make sure it's clean and has gas before you take off. You get what you pay for. This place doesn't even deserve a star to begin with!!!! They are unprofessional and hypocritical!! The car that I got didn't even last for half an hour before it had problems!! A few hours after renting the car... decided to go next door to rite aid, got back to car, car didn't even turn on! The office was closed... soo called maryam cell...she had the NERVE to try to turn it around and say it was our fault!! she had mentioned the battery can drain if we don't shut the door tight.....but come on please!!! we would know if the door wasn't shut tight or not right???? next she had the NERVE to tell us to see if we can ask a stranger to help us jump start the car!! They finally decided to send this RUDE mechanic to come and change the battery for us... which after he changed the battery ( who knows if it was a new one tho... who knows he prob just put the same one back in!!).... the car turned on but another problem occurred with it where the engine started making this rattling noise and movement in the engine!!... the mechanic kept saying it was nothing... called maryam again.. the rude mechanic finally fixed the other problem day wasted!!! charged for that day too!!! didn't even use the car for more than half an hour already problems!!!!
