During a routine oil change, Tyrone's (general manager) behavior towards me throughout the entire visit was visibly defensive, rude, hostile, and condescending. He aggressively tried to upsell me a battery and cabin filter, and gave humiliating and unhelpful answers when I asked for more information. He shoved my dirty cabin filter through my open car window into my face, loudly demanding I hold it. When I refused, he made aggressive physical gestures as if he were going to throw the dirty filter across the car onto my passenger seat, all while still loudly demanding I take it and hold onto it until they were ready to put it back. No other staff intervened. This blatant bullying caused me to feel trapped and unsafe inside my own vehicle. I doubt very much that Tyrone would have treated me this way if I were a man. In addition, the final service documents he handed me flagged absolutely zero issues with my battery or cabin filter, indicating a huge lack of integrity. I submitted a formal complaint and received a full refund and a few coupons for free services from the Area Manager, but after seeing recent reviews saying that Tyrone is still actively employed here, there is no way I would bring my car back to this location to use those coupons. Even going to a different location does not sit right with me. A refund does not excuse an absolute failure of customer safety and basic integrity. Do not come here. read more

Gave me a scammy excuse showing a dumb animation of valves and lifters, obviously showing nothing of importance, but some poor customers may end up with the misplaced fear of "extreme engine wear or catastrophic failure". Been going to this vs Volume for years. During this past year my tire bolt on one tire was stripped it was beyond upsetting. They were rotating my tires when this happenned. Since then I have been going in to check air pressure recently as it turns out I had a nail puncture in one tire. The new manager refused to fill my tires saying they charge 10$ now. I was shocked as two valvoline shops nearby Arlington and Winchester do it for free all the time without exception. Avoid this shop incompetent expensive and not service focused. read more

UPDATE: Business Leadership (Customer Service) responded back and though this is a nice gesture, I can't stand the smug attitude they have in trying to place blame back onto me, stating that they apologizes "IF IT DID'T FEEL THAT WAY". Point blank, I gave the tech the benefit of the doubt and asked him to check the band new filter I had replaced 2 weeks prior to coming to have my oil changed and asked for his "Professional Opinion" if I needed it to be changed, to which he replied with a solid, "YES". He then tries to cast doubt that my battery is good and may need to get replaced, and again that was changed out the same time I had replaced my filters. (The battery was dusty when I received it from the auto center and I purposely left it dusty because I wanted to test and see what your techs would say.....Sad to say they FAILED) I don't blame the tech, perhaps it is the business practice of this location to upsell every customer regardless if they need it or not. To which I repeat to the leadership.....DO BETTER!!! Customer service has provided some type of Case number so that they can comp me with something.....That is not necessary I will not be seeking any kind of compensation because my review is not to get free stuff. Its to provide my experience of doing business with said place. To the Valvoline Company, take my review as customer feed back, that you need to stop with the high pressure BS upselling or you are going to end up with many more reviews like this one. I had some work done on my car; oil change, and some other fluids in the engine that needed attention. They did the work, explained what they had done, took my payment and off I went. i didn't get far. The car basically died, steering wheel was immovable, none of the pedals responded when I stepped on them. I was helpless (and in the way of all these cars that ended up going around me.) A total nightmare. I called Valvoline. They asked for my location and came over right away (there was a woman in charge and she was awesome! She took out some of the engine and exposed a huge stash of old leaves and other stuff that was in the engine blocking an air filter. How did that stuff get in there I asked, completely bewildered (I don't "do" cars.) MICE!!!!! yup MICE!!! she explained that mice get in engines when it's cold, for warmth, and drag all that other stuff with them. She cleaned it out and the car is perfect. I have gone here before and liked this Valvoline because they were all women the last time I went. No women this time, but that's not the reason for my 1* review. The current service manager is officious, seems irritable, and impatient and definitely looked to up-sell beyond the oil change. Guess what?! Radiator fluid needed to be changed. Funny, that's what the car next to me needed as well. This maintenance recommendation may be fact based, however, the subtly aggressive manner of the person who serviced my car was very off-putting. There was an undertone of "you are an idiot, just shut up and do what I tell you, and don't bother me" For politeness there was a 'ma'am' added to every sentence, but the undertone was really off, somewhat intimidating. I am generally not easily intimidated. They claim they check all your systems, like the blinkers and lights too. I saw one of the service people check all those boxes for my car as fine when he had not checked the lights and blinkers. They did it on the car next to mine. It would have been helpful to have them checked since there is no way to do that by oneself. When I asked for a receipt, he said "I e-mailed it to you!", while ushering me out of the garage. Well, no e-mail was received. When I called the next day there was, of course, hold time and re-routing to get to the N. Cambridge Valvoline. The gentleman from the day before answered the phone. I asked which e-mail the receipt was sent to and learned that they don't have an e-mail address for me (which is my preference, actually. I don't want all the spam that comes with giving out my e-mail). He told me to call some other number to get it, which I did not agree to. I feel it is unreasonable for me to chase a receipt he should have given me (I need it for my car records). He was irritable and explained that he can't possible e-mail the receipt from my account since I was there yesterday. It would not work. OK then! Only with encouragement did he agree to print the receipt, which I then had to go out of my way to pick up at their location. I am NEVER GOING BACK, and I have buyer's regret for cheating on my wonderful regular mechanic. Mud on my face for that. VALVOLINE MANAGEMENT, can you integrate it into your system to give the customer a choice about whether they want an e-mailed or printed receipt. This is the current practice at most other businesses While I like to save trees this one is a receipt I needed on paper, in hand. It should not have had to be so effortful on my part. read more

Upselling is alive and well with the shift leader I spoke with. Since I was using the wrong oil for my engine he said the differential was quite dirty and need to be flushed and replaced. That two separate systems soo -- yah right :-/ I explained my regular mechanic would take a look and he shut right up. Too funny! read more

Friendly, resourceful and a bit scammy. Came here once for just a routine oil change. They immediately let me know after I pulled in that they were out of conventional oil and only had the more expensive synthetic oil left. They were oddly nervous when telling me this, which did set my BS meter at the time, but I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt - something that I would not recommend doing for them moving forward. Then they said that one of my car fluids (I believe the transmission fluid?) needs to be replaced and let me know that they "can do that." I'm an over-analyzer so I naturally told him that I'll keep that in mind when I do my research and consult my dedicated car circle of trust before doing anything to my car. The technicians wrapped things up after a much longer time than usual for a simple oil change. When I received the bill, the total was for both an oil change AND replacing the car (transmission?) fluid. Again, I only wanted an oil change and did not ask or agree to anything else. I decided to pay for both services as all the services were already done, and felt I'd be a jerk short-changing them, even for something that was really their fault. Reading some of the other reviews here, it looks like they try to pull this "upsell" frequently. I would not recommend getting serviced at this shop. If you do, I'd probably recommend being obnoxious about what services you want and don't want. Otherwise, the guys were super friendly. read more

I've never left a review on ANYTHING IN MY ENTRIE LIFE but I had to here... I don't even know if they changed my oil I was in and out in less than five minutes. I know that's why we go to Valvoline but holy shit that was quick.... I enter to have some guy answer the phone and scream at the employee on the other end who was looking for another employee when he hung up he's like "I F****** can't stand that kid (to another employee). I was treated as the biggest inconvenience and told that my transmission was the "shittiest one on the market" I drive a 2016 Honda Civic with 45000 miles. When I told him I didn't want their "up charged" filter (and that not how i said it)- he treated me even more like shit. I'm like no thank you.then he didn't even tell me I was done he handed me my sticker, stood at the open door and was like rolling his eyes at me bc I'm trying to take my sticker off and put the new one on. I also had to reset the light on my car (which I know how to do) but they made me feel like I was waisting their time and rushed me so much so that I thought another car was behind me. There wasn't. I legit pulled over to write this and as I said above never in my life have I written a review FOR ANYTHING. THEN when he saw that I had a 10.00 coupon (I had found a coupon code but he was so much of a Dick that I didn't even want to try it bc I was nervous he would fuck up my car for waisting his time. I just called corporate. The guy who has no manners name is Nick. Also- I reset my oil light and it's still saying I I only have 10% oil. They are supposed to check my lights etc....none of that was done.... and Tyrone (the manager) should be getting back to me this weekend. Edit: I am still seeing I only have 10% of my oil life left....I want to go back but this guy is such a Dick I'm nervous he's gonna mess up my car if I tell them they did it wrong. I've been here two times. The first time, I was yelled at by the attendant while I was pulling in because the way I was doing it wasn't perfect. Never had a problem pulling in other oil change places. I decided to give them another shot a year later. When I pulled in last night to get a headlight replaced five minutes before closing I was told they had already shut the computers down and couldn't do it. I had the pleasure of coming through today and working with Ashley and another technician. My only complaint that the appointment was too fast! (I was expecting to get some work emails done ) joking aside- I was thrilled with my visit every step of the way (don't think I've ever used the word "thrilled" in regards to an oil change in my life.) and left a satisfied customer. There was no wait, Ashley and her teammate greeted me immediately and we got started. Ashley walked me through my options- never pressured me to up sell- and explained everything step by step- including how to clear my maintenance code when I was done. Her associate noted right away that my wipers looked 'flat' and I was asked if they're streaky- which yes they are awful. I went to this location to get an oil change. While they were checking my car, they told me that I needed to change the fluid in my transmission as soon as possible. They said they found debris in it and that could destroy my whole car. Mind you, while they're telling me this, the guy is eating spaghetti in my face? It was a very interesting experience. I did not change the transmission fluid there since I was getting flustered and did not have the time. I went to a different Valvoline a couple weeks later and asked for a transmission fluid change which they followed up by asking why I wanted one because there was nothing wrong with it!!! Valvoline RULE #1 - Don't go without a coupon. They're all over the place. Seems to me that all the prices are jacked up about $5 anyway compared to other places and I didn't see anybody not using a coupon. 37.99 for the 'conventional' to 72.99 'Premium Blue Extreme' I guess for old Firebirds or something. And like other oil change places make you aware of everything else you need $$ Nice Tiffany was running my bay and talked me thu everything like I was getting a medical procedure. YES - they checked all the fluids - I asked to be sure. I was out in 18 minutes on a weekday afternoon rush hour. I hate doing car maintenance stuff so this was great for me. read more

Since I bought my car 8,000miles now it's 106,000miles. I changed oil with Volvaline Cambridge never changed anywhere and everytime this person tried to sell their options blah..blah.. if you won't buy it he acts like you do something wrong or you're so bad person. I don't know why he tried to do like that since I've used their service until today he closed my door and hurt my leg WTf this store how did you train your employee!!! If you wanna sell something if customers don't wanna buy then let it go. Don't try to push or act like stupid. I won't go there again. And I've been here because it's fast and convenient if I have to pay extra, I would like to pay but today I was hurry he tried to sell services and I told him I'll be late then he hold my car in that's station at least 30mins if manager can watch camera please check it but I think he's manager in this location. The people that work there are rude as f towards customers! A couple months ago my sisters and I stopped by on the way to a camping site in New Hampshire and the one person giving my sister at the wheel the fixer upper service was extremely condescending and judge mental. He was so disrespectful towards my sister that by the time we drove off, my sister (driving at the wheel) broke down in tears. She was so appalled and heart sank by the outrageous service, that it hurt her with anger to even think of it. Do not come to this Valvoline service! I hope these workers lose their job! These guys were fast and efficient. In and out in 15 minutes. Check-in on Yelp and you get $10 off coupon! I ended up spending about $100 because I got an oil change + two new air filters bc mine were total shot. I'm not sure if it would have been cheaper going to my dealership (perhaps...), but these guys were open on a Sunday and I desperately needed an oil change after a long roadtrip. I went in for an oil change for my car, which uses full synthetic oil. I had a Groupon for a full synthetic oil change at Valvoline. First, the guy told me the Groupon was expired without even looking at it. It wasn't expired. Then he tells me it's an additional $26 because the Groupon is for 5 quarts of oil and my car uses 6 quarts and a premium oil filter. I tell the guy to fill it up with 5 quarts as per the Groupon limit and that I would buy the additional quart. He starts yelling and bitching at me: "I'm not gonna do that!! I won't let you do that blah blah" Very rude. I would have paid the $26 dollars if the guy had not been such a douche. I went to the location in Brookline and they were way nicer. Same franchisee, completely different workforce. I would not recommend the Cambridge location at all. read more

I'm a big fan of the drive thru oil change. I hate waiting in those horrible waiting rooms or standing around the bay waiting for my car. This way, I can see whats going on. Go on their website and print a $5 coupon. The prices here are high. About $40 for standard oil change. This cost is supposed to include a check of: Transmission fluid Power steering fluid Windshield washer fluid Antifreeze/coolant Tire pressure Air Filter Serpentine Belt Wiper blades Vehicle Lights I know for a fact they didn't do all of these, because I was sitting in the car. I used to go to a Valvoline in Lowell that was cheaper, nicer, and through. Ya, it took a little longer, but they did check all fluid levels and even vacuumed my carpets, every time. I hoped this Valvoline would offer the same satisfaction but it did not. For its drive thru, super fast convenience, I may return. But only if I cant find another place. read more

I go out of my way an extra mile or so from all the nearby gas+garage type shops to get my oil changed here. The staff is always super friendly, amicable, chatty - they seem to really enjoy what they're doing, compared, to your typical reticent serviceperson at most shops. I'm not the best person to know whether or not or how often I need to change fluids other than the oil (transmission, steering fluid) but based on your miles and visits they'll recommend when you should. Yes, they're a bit pricey, yes, they politely offer "up-sell" products/services, but it goes a long way for me in peace of mind to just let them worry and advise me what I need, so I can get on with my day and feel like my car is going to keep running well. read more

Dishonest business practices. Told me my car needed synthetic oil and it would be 99 dollars and last for 7000 miles. I said no thanks I'll go to my guy, he charges 70 dollars for synthetic. He then said he'd do it for 70 dollars then because he doesn't like to lose customers. Ok shady, but I said fine. When finished he puts the sticker on my windshield and it's only for 3000 miles. Um what? I said hey what gives you said synthetic lasts 7000 miles. He says "oh I put a blend in there, I wouldn't go longer than 5000 on that". Wow dude straight up lied to my face. He's the manager and he tries to distract you by fast talking and making jokes and stuff, all while he's legit lying to your face and ripping you off. Bad guy. Don't take your car here. read more

Fantastic service today. I have an injury and a 15 month old. Needless to say a drive-through oil change is exactly what I needed! Everyone immediately ran to guide us into the bay and I was out in less than 15 minutes. I will absolutely return when it's time. Easiest oil change ever. read more

The pros: Never a wait, no matter when I've gone Friendly staff In and out in under 15 minutes, on average The Cons: They tried to charge me $90 for a pair of wiper blades. Seriously. I called the Honda dealership and they said it would be $30, and when I shared this info with the guy trying to convince me that this was a steal, he told me I was being lied to and got even more aggro about making the sale. No thanks. It is insane that even with a coupon, a standard oil change is about $65 after they add all the hidden fees. As another yelper commented, they don't do all the checks that they're supposed to, so you really are paying $65 just for the oil and 15 min of labor. Based on my experience and the yelper who pointed out that they made a mistake that could have destroyed his engine, I'll probably switch to another place for my next oil change. read more

I know very little about cars, the one thing I do know is that in order to avoid problems you should follow the recommended maintenance. So I do my best to get my regular oil changes, and other such things done on time. Recently I decided to try Valvoline Instant Oil Change on Mass Ave for this. I didn't have high expectations but I was pleasantly surprised. The men working there were very friendly and did a great job at explaining to me what they were doing and what things they found that needed to be repaired. I didn't feel like they pushed services that weren't needed, which I really appreciate. They were fast, just as one would hope for an instant oil change. I'm glad this place is so close to my house, I'll definitely be going back for future oil changes. read more

The extras: informative (different types of oil I could get and why a less expensive type might actually be better than the type we've been using), and didn't try to offer me things I didn't come in for... but when I asked for advice, they made useful observations about the cars we're considering as replacements our beloved, but aging 1996 corolla. Just had another great experience at the mass ave valvoline. Courtney and Natalie were funny, sweet, and professional. Nobody is ever really psyched to go and get their oil changed, but those girls made it a lot more pleasant. They explained everything as they did it and talked to me about what was necessary and what wasn't. read more
