I got the half order (.35 lbs) of the barbacoa & hubs got the barbacoa burrito. The food came out quickly and with great portions! Lamb barbacoa- the texture of the meat was soft, warm, it fell apart nicely. The corn tortillas were fresh and the salsas paired so nicely with the meat. The broth that comes with the order alone is worth coming for! It was so light and nourishing, not greasy at all. The broth has some garbanzo beans and rice in it. I ended up putting a little bit of my barbacoa in it and eating it like soup. Perfection. Barbacoa burrito- had barbacoa meat (lots of it), beans, and either had some lettuce or cabbage. While it was also great, i preferred the tacos over the burrito. I mean.. c'mon. Tacos o burritos any day. Especially when the corn tortillas are made in-house! Service: The service was great, the staff were very friendly and accommodating for us. They checked in as needed and asked how the food was. Such a unique restaurant as I haven't found a lot of places in north county SD that offer lamb & goat meat on their menu. Best authentic Mexican food around!! Everything they make fresh and packed with flavor. Menu even has some items you don't commonly find elsewhere like lamb barbacoa and goat stew. Tacos are a bit pricier here, but they are big and meaty. Beware, the salsas are very hot. Service is as excellent as the food, very hands on and friendly. We needed to attend a school function at nearby Moonlight Ampitheater and wanted to visit Vamos a Texcoco due to the rave reviews. Our function didn't end until 8:45, and VaT closes at 9pm so I didn't think they would accomodate my order, but they did! Excellent customer service. They grilled up the food fast and had it all collected in a large box, with several different kinds of salsa. We ordered: * Martinez Special - this is a lot of food for $10 * Barbacoa Burrito * Carne Asada Burrito * Gordo's Quesadilla * Four churros Everything was excellent. I have to say the Carne Asada Burrito was outstanding...so much flavor in the meat. Note: they do add refried beans to their burritos, which is not that common in my experiences. The Gordo's Quesadilla contains barbacoa, cheese and "Huitlacoche". If you don't know what that is, you might want to google it before ordering...or not, and simply experiment. I thought it was very good, but needs salsa and the other ingredients, otherwise the "corn smut" is not the most appetizing in texture. (tip: watch the Bizarre Foods episode with Andrew Zimmern) The restaurant is cozy and strangely right next to a Filiberto's. Awkwaaaard! There were quite a few people eating at 9pm so it's quite popular with the locals it appears. Overall, very good. I would definitely come back. read more

my on-going mission to explore MEXICO's complex and diverse cuisines took me to an astoundingly good restaurant. first a quick geography lesson : TEXCOCO is a state in south-central MEXICO just a little north and east of the capital city. the TEXCOCO version of barbacoa, lamb slow-roasted with maguey and avocado leaves, features heavily in their menu. as tempting as it would be to leave the hyperbole to the WHITE HOUSE and DONNY "LITTLE-HANDS" (why does everything with him gotta be characterized with superlatives ??), i gotta say this is, without a doubt, one of my best meals of the year. even old stand-bys were out-of-this-world good. as soon as we sat down a server brought condiment bowls of cilantro and onions, pickled onions with habanero slivers, cut-up limes and three different salsas. early on confidence was high we were in for a real treat. unlike the stale, off-the-grocery-store-shelf chips we endured at LUCHA LIBRA, the chips at VAMOS a TEXCOCO were on an entirely different level. hot and crispy, they paired perfectly with the rich, tangy guacamole. son MICHAEL's BARBACOA BURRITO was killer. stuffed with succulent lamb, beans, cheese, onions and cilantro. add a squirt of hot sauce, a squeeze of lime and he was ready to party. the feral noises he made while eating were reminiscent of MEG RYAN's KATZ DELI scene from "WHEN HARRY MET SALLY" ... i had a CABEZA SOFT TACO (can you ever get enough head ??) which i "seasoned" with salsa verde, a squeeze of lime, and a spoon each of the diced onions and cilantro and the pickled onions with habanero -- juicy and delicious really doesn't do it justice. the house-made corn tortillas arrived hot and fresh and came in handy scooping up "little tacos" of the MARTINEZ SPECIAL, a steaming bowl of soup with lots of lamb, chickpeas, nopales (cactus) and avocado. seasoned my bowl a little corner at a time the same way i did the soft taco and LOVED every bite. how good was the food ?? i ordered a large MENUDO to go for tomorrow to save myself the ten minute drive to VISTA. yeah, lunch was that amazing. i know there's a MEXICAN place (or two) on every street corner in southern CALIFORNIA but this place IS special. ps: on the revisit ordered a pound of lamb and sat at a table with a couple friends and our build-your-own taco bar -- fresh corn tortillas, guacamole, chopped cilantro and onions, 3 salsas, quartered limes, pickled onions w/habaneros and ropey strands of tender barbacoa. we also split a GORDO's QUESADILLA (lamb, huitlacoche and mozzarella). everything i've eaten here is amazing. this place is the BOMB !!! read more

Deeeeeelish! I was in the area and have been dying to try this restaurant for quite some time. The staff was friendly, and you can see they all hustle. My only regret is not taking one of their agua frescas to go with my meal (the horchata kept starring at me). The broth flavors made the trip worth it. I'm only docking a star because inside the soup was one large bone with a bunch of meat you had to work hard to get off. I'm happy to do so for the quality and flavors but it made for a messy meal. This rating is based on their goat stew. The goat stew gets 3 stars, but everything else brings it up another star. The tortillas are hand made, extra points. They have 3 salsas they bring out, my favorite is the dark red. I ordered a small bowl of the goat stew and my dining partners ordered a pound of the lamb to eat tacos and share amongst themselves. I went in 09/17/22 shortly before noon. Our server, Melisa, was rude since the start. It took awhile to even get our drink order in. I ordered a full order of lamb barbacoa and a birria taco for delivery. Everything was packed nicely. The taco and tortillas came in a foil-line bag to preserve the heat. The birria was extremely disappointing, as it was mostly fat, and had 3 small pieces of bone in it. The lamb broth was amazing, with just the right amount of salt and great lambiness without being heavy. The barbacoa was good, not great, and also had a small piece of bone. Overall, I have mixed feelings, but the total of 4 pieces of bone in my order made me decide to not order from here again. read more

Wow, I just doordashed food from here yesterday and OMG it was amazing!!! The packaging was organized and immaculate. The salsas, pickles, and condiments were soooo yummy. You can tell they put a lot of work into their food. And the main courses were soooo good! I recommend the lamb and birria, but everything there is really good. I honestly don't know how this place has so many stars.. the food was okay,but they have so many "rules" . Like for an example you can't split the checks, or order separate, everything pretty much goes on ONE BILL . We were invited here for a cousins bday so we brought a cake. Right away the person taking our order approached our table and stated that we weren't allowed to have our way there because it was against there rules, but then a little bit after comes back and says we can have it and cut it there but we had to pay 10$ to have it there. Wow. The food is amazing! I went there today with a good friend of mine at his recommendation and was blown away at the quality and flavor of the food. I ordered the lamb barbacoa burrito and he ordered the machaca burrito. Served fresh and piping hot, they offer three types of fresh salsas; a roasted pepper, Habanero and a tomatillo and cilantro salsa (verde, but not traditional verde salsa). They also have onion and cilantro minced together as well as my favorite, pickled onions with habanero rings. The perfect accent to the food. I also ordered an Agua Fresca (Tamarindo) and it was house made, not from a prepackaged mix. There were definite fresh chunks of tamarind in my beverage and it was delicious. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough to people. I will definitely be back to visit. read more

Excellent lamb-centric taco+ shop. A sharable pound of lamb, 10 tortillas, salsas, onion/cilantro, and escebeche will set you back about $17. A can of Coke is $1.40. Very nice service and reasonably clean place. My (tiny) complaints are the corn tortillas were too wet (not toasted enough) for my tastes and the lamb meat did not have any dark flecks/burnt ends - which for me adds depth to the flavor to the meat. Green salsa was bright and delicious. The two reds were better than okay. The lamb broth was very good (rice, garbanzos, and broth). We will return to check out the birria and menudo, both of which are regular menu items... Recommended. read more

This used to be one of my favorite places, but this week I had an unpleasant visit. I came here thinking it was going to be a great evening "NOT"!!!! The new waitresses are very freaking rude. Ugly attitude & not welcoming at all! We seated & wanted to have some drinks and get our food to go, one of the waitresses had the audacity to tell me to get up & order by the door. She was not willing to take our oder after she gave me a nasty attitude she agree to take our order. It made us feel soo uncomfortable. We will not be visiting this place anytime soon!
