This used to be one of my favorite places, but this week I had an unpleasant visit. I came here thinking it was going to be a great evening "NOT"!!!! The new waitresses are very freaking rude. Ugly attitude & not welcoming at all! We seated & wanted to have some drinks and get our food to go, one of the waitresses had the audacity to tell me to get up & order by the door. She was not willing to take our oder after she gave me a nasty attitude she agree to take our order. It made us feel soo uncomfortable. We will not be visiting this place anytime soon! The food is very bland. My rolled tacos and lamb taco had no special flavor to it. The salsa has no flavor to it as well. My coworkers enjoyed their Cali burrito. On the plus side is that the rolled tacos are long and fulfilling. I will not be coming back. read more

Very much conflicted on this review.... I absolutely love having this place not too busy to get a table, but we are talking Vista and all great spots here need a little help to stay in biz. This place is insane. Some of the best Birria I have ever had.... definitely the cleanest. The Martinez Special and the trio of Quesadillas are some of our favorites and my wife and often share the two. Cant wait to get some more soon! read more

This place is not the fanciest looking spot, but it's well worth going. I got the lamb brought, the crunchy tacos and the quesadilla with a home made stile rice water (Horchata). The flavor waters there are all home stile maid so you know they are delicious. My crunchy tacos were a bit to greasy but the meat was just right. The quesadilla was served with a hand maid tortilla, inside it had mozzarella cheese and corn mushrooms. The servings weren't the biggest portions and the cost wasn't really adequate for what it was. The food was good and their customer service was amazing over all it was a good experience with an after taste of lamb. read more

The food is excellent. The sweetest servers are part of this family owned business and everything is made in house, even the churros!!! The lamb bbq is SO tender. It melts in your mouth. We got 1 lb and tortillas and easily fed 2 people who are hardy eaters. The pickled onion are a tasty compliment to The juicy meat and The fresh cooked to order corn tortillas are stellar!! Also they used to make fresh beet, orange etc juices and hey stop that. I was disAPpointed. The food is good. The lamb has less fat and the meat is more than Aqui Es Texoco. I'm a huge fan of this place and highly recommend EVERYONE go and check it out. Why, you ask? First off... the barbacoa is delicious! Lamb is so tender and flavorful! I usually get tacos with the mixta barbcacoa. There are 4 types of barbacoa listed and mixta means a little bit of everything. Be sure to get a side of consumel, aka broth. The flavor really enhances the tacos. The tortillas are home-made and come out glistening. They're not shy about portions, either. The tacos are served STUFFED with barbacoa and nothing else. It's up to you to add onions/cilation, salsa (one of 3) and I usually get a half-pint of their delicious guacamole as well. I also occasionally get the Martinez Special, if it's not too hot out. This is a fantastic soup with barbacoa and includes garbanzo beans, nopal, and comes with a side of tortillas. It's all kinds of delicious and if you're a soup-lover, I highly recommend this. The drink selection is also great. I love their champurrado, which is like hot coco but thicker and includes chunks of cinnamon stick and other goodness. They also have a nice beer selection, and most recently I tried the Tepache. It's some sort of Aztec drink made from fermented pineapple. Very tasty! The staff is great. The owner is Roberto Cuin (he gave me his card one time) and he is very pleasant. He speaks english as well. You can usually identify him by the little black cap. He's also extremely knowledgeable and you can tell he takes pride in his craft. The atmosphere is simple. You can probably spot a couple agave plants holding the door open too, so that adds to the charm. All in all, a great place to eat any time of day for any occasion. It took me a while to visit this place because I wasn't sure of its staying power, but now I'm hooked. Great place to have specialty regional items that are usually not on a Mexican food menu. I had the trio of quesadillas- huitlacoche (still don't know what this is but it tastes good! a coworker just told me that actually this is a corn grain parasite. ummmmm...... ), flor de calabaza (pumpkin plant flower, for all y'all greengoes!) and hongo (mushroom). The tortillas are made right there. yummy selection of salsas. The dark one tastes a bit sweet, like tamarind. excellent! I am on a sugar-avoidance diet, so no aguas frescas de tamarindo, horchata or jamaica for me, but when i overheard that they had TEPACHE i asked for one. Some things are worth the extra 30 minutes on the treadmill, this savory-sweet and yet tangy concoction of fermented pineapple juice being one of those things. So refreshing, like a beer is. One of my co-workers recommended this place for having authentic Barbacoa de Borrego. I wasn't disappointed. The Martinez Special was delish! It had chunks of lamb, cactus, garbanzos and half an avocado all served in a delicious broth. The tacos (which only cost $1.65 each) had a good portion of meat. I have been twice in 3 days and am returning this Sunday (Mother's Day). I'm taking my mom, my dad, my daughter and a visiting brother-in-law. This restaurant specializes in regional dishes including roasted lamb, huichotle (corn fungus, sort of like a giant mushroom), cactus salad, with fresh limes and cilantro/onion garnish. I was pleasantly surprised, particularly by the friendliness of the owner and staff. The garbanzo broth was muy sabroso, tambien las aguas frescas, incluido horchata, tamarindo, pina, and limonada de fresas. All are handmade, fresh on premises. This is the best tasting, healthiest (at least for carnivores) Mexican food in North SD County. Just lamb, handmade tortillas, some fresh vegetables, tasty sauces, and luscious lamb broth. Absolutely wonderful lamb barbacoa the favor is there 100%. I had two macisa tacos with a large consome broth soup. Their salsas were amazing spicy and flavorful. I have traveled to Mexico city recently and went to this historical barbacoa place, el polar. This place is right in line with that unique flavor of Lamb. Service was outstanding, I was greeted and taken care of right away for my to-Go order. I have driven by when it's busy so be prepared to wait on weekend mornings especially. I totally love lamb so I was super excited to check this place out. Finally made it over one day to pick up lunch for me and my employees. I ordered some of the soft tacos and some rolled tacos. I did like how they had all of the accompaniments on the side for you to add yourself. Once I got back to the office and took a bite I was very disappointed. The lamb was gamey and dry, not what I expected after reading all these great reviews. Don't know if I just hit them on a bad day or what but none of us enjoyed our food. read more

We came here on a Sunday around noon and it was packed. There were people waiting outside. Luckily we got in quickly, but if you are coming with a large party be weary not to come during the busiest times otherwise you'll end up waiting a while for a table. The food is very delicious! We got the Martinez Special...lamb meat, cactus salad, avocado, tortillas, and a delicious soup made with the lamb broth, garbanzo beans, and rice. The food is unique in that they serve things you otherwise may not find at your usual Mexican restaurant around the area. They have house-made tamarindo, horchata, and other fresh juices. The salsas are excellent and the tortillas are fresh (if you go M-F, they make them in house). I haven't been here in a while and boy this place has changed. Let me start by saying they don't do fresh tortillas in the weekends because according to them is busy...Hello!!! That's the whole purpose I came here. The barbacoa consomé was okay but nothing out of the ordinary. The carne asada huarache was over cook meat. The menudo was thick with tiny pieces of meat to fish. The flor de calabaza quesadilla could have been perfect if the tortilla was soft. Maybe he was desperate for a gringo Yelp review. Well it worked. This indeed is the right place for delicious, succulent lamb. We ordered the Martinez special, which comes with lamb broth, meat, cactus, avocado, and tortillas. It was very good, as was the barbacoa burrito. My parents also liked their rolled chicken tacos. I love this place! This is a legit place to eat mexican food like menudo, goat, consomé, quesadillas (zucchini flower, huitlacoche, mushrooms, etc). It can get a little bit pricey if you order alcohol, otherwise you'll be paying about 30 dollars for two meals. I personally like the Martinez Special plate because you can get all of the ingredients mixed in a bowl as a soup or as a plate with the meat (goat), cactus, avocado and then the broth in a small container.
