No Stars. Zero. I would give negative stars if I could. I've had not one but two awful experiences with this salon chain, and I've only been there a handful of times. Both situations involved senior colorists at two different locations. My first appointment, with Alex in Buckhead, was a disaster when I turned around in the chair to find orange highlights! When I didn't want to leave with orange hair and asked to get it fixed with a toner, I was met with attitude and was treated like it was my fault because of my base color. Come to find out, he used a 15 vol. developer, which, before-hand, I told him was not going to be enough. I was extremally unhappy with the results, but somehow it was my fault?? OR....he could have just admitted that the 15 vol. developer wasn't strong enough...as I suggested. A year later, I decided to give Van Michael another chance at a different location, The Forum, with Kerri. All was well until I had an issue with a root touch up. I walked away looking like I hadn't done anything at all to my roots. In fact, they looked worse than when I walked in. I was so disappointed, and when I called to get it fixed, I was made to feel like it was my fault that Kerri didn't do a base color or low-lights, even though I had recommended BOTH before-hand. I told Kerri that I wanted to eventually move away from doing a base color so that I could only do highlights, which would start to incorporate my grey hair. However, I told her that I didn't think that it was something we could do in this appointment, and that it would need to be a gradual process by using lighter and lighter base colors and low-lights. It was Kerri, the PROFESSIONAL, who told me that I didn't need to do either. Well, she was wrong, and I came out with white roots that didn't even come close to matching the rest of my hair. My root grow out looked worse than when I walked in. Instead of admitting that it was a mistake to not do a base, Kerri made it seem like it was MY fault....again! What is it about this company and their culture that their stylists/colorists are never wrong, never make a mistake, and the customer is the one who is in the wrong? I guess the lack of customer service and humility runs deep in their culture, because I was met with the same mentality with their corporate office. If you're looking for complacent colorists, with an ego, who get away with charging way too much for doing basic work, then this is the place for you. read more

Today was my first time visiting Van Michael and I am proud to say that I will surely be back! Upon arrival, I was greeted and offered a drink by nearly everyone. (Pro tip: walk into the far left side and not the Aveda side so you don't get confused.) Everyone was extremely patient and nice with my confusion and was so happy to walk me around the salon. Inside is beautiful and very very clean. Rob, my awesome hair cutter, described the intense process everyone must go through to become staff either and a specialist in their area of expertise. This is clear through the care I observed him and other stylists putting into their areas and throughout the salon. As far as my cut goes, Rob was incredible! He taught me so much about my hair and hair care in general. He worked really hard to make it a personalized experience that I benefitted from a lot. He made sure I had photos to see on the iPad before he did the cut on me and he explained everything snip he made. The whole experience was very relaxing and I completely trusted him with my hair and new do. Because it was so personalized, he was realistic about my cut, to ensure I could still braid it or pull up into a pony tail, and taught me an easy way in a step-by-step manner to straighten my hair at home. He also gave me so many helpful tips, compliments :), and walked me through the hair coloring process that I'm interested in doing in the future. His intern Pepper was also clearly knowledgable and passionate about hair care. She gave me a great wash and was fun to talk with. I was so impressed with their teamwork that clearly is part of the magic of Van Michael. Never once did I feel as if Pepper and Rob's attention was not on me and my hair. Pains me to write this as I have (until now) only had positive experiences at van michael. Usually they handle my hair with the utmost care, but my recent haircut was awful. I showed Ronnie 2 different example pics of the same style I wanted - CURTAIN BANGS. She decides to give me straight across bangs that are so SHORT - above my eyebrow!!! There was no warning either - she told me'd cut them "at my eyes" - forgive me for trusting that a professional hair stylist knew the difference between "at my eyes" and above my eyebrows. She cut and it was immediately the exact opposite of what I asked for. I showed her the pic again at the end and all she could say was "oh yeah, those are longer". As if she didn't even pay attention the first time!!! Whatever you do - DO NOT SEE RONNIE!!! She put in no effort whatsoever to match what I wanted and just ran with her own idea. And now I hate my hair that used to be my favorite physical trait. read more

Be warned, if they mess up your color, you will have to pay to fix it, if it can even be fixed. I came in for temporary vivid color. After I repeatedly told the colorist not to use anything permanent, she used a permanent color on my base. After six months, I still had a hard line at my regrowth, and the base color had faded to yellow on top and coral in my layers. After 2 attempts to remove the remaining stains (at my expense), I asked the colorist to use a toner to lessen the impact of the yellow. I expected her to use a purple toner. I was completely shocked when I saw my hair color. The colorist used a brown even though I repeatedly told her I did not want darker hair. I wanted my hair back to the original salt and pepper. She never discussed making my hair brown. My hair looks like I colored it with a $10 box of medium brown home hair color. Now, I have to wait 3-4 months for this crap to fade, if it even will fade. I have attempted to reach corporate by mail, e-mail, and phone. They have not responded. read more

He not only listens and does the exact look and color I want every time, but he's an expert at installation so it goes so fast. I also really love the tape-ins because they are so natural, easy to maintain and super light which is his speciality. She is a well-paying client and she did not deserve his poor attitude. We will gladly go back to the salon in the future, but we will never again sit in his chair. I love this salon. I haven't ever "liked" a salon. Everyone there is super friendly and well dressed as if you're in a club. They provide refreshments (not that kind) while you wait. I had Wesley do my hair and she did a great job!! I think it might be my best haircut, ever! She's also very friendly and nice. I've had a few hair dressers who don't even speak or look at me and it's just really awkward. I would definitely go again and I would request her again as well. Their haircuts range from $28 - 70 and it's based on experience. My first experience at Van Michael Buckhead was today. After being with the same stylist for 18 years, it was both scary and emotional for me to have my hair styled by someone new. To begin, the people behind the reception desk were so warm and friendly. Then, my stylist, Ronnie, could not have been more welcoming. I felt like I'd been invited into her home. She asked for, and listened to, my hair history and then gave me a lovely neck massage. When she washed my hair and massaged my scalp, I thought, "Who cares if I even get a haircut? This was worth the entire trip to the salon!" Then, she honored my input fully regarding how I wanted my hair to be cut. She worked with precision and was completely engaging, while repeating my name when she talked to me. We had a long conversation about company branding (I work for a large Atlanta corporation) and how we, as employees on the frontline, represent our "brand" and the importance of being professional and personal. I would say that Ronnie gave me an absolutely remarkable impression of Van Michael Salon. After she dried my hair, she handed me a can of hairspray and asked me to show her how I style my hair. It was fun to do that! Ronnie poured me another cup of coffee before I left, and I actually hugged her because she felt like a dear friend after just one hour. Thank you, Ronnie! Outstanding work! I've been a fan of Van Michael's for many years. I used to frequently visit the The Forum location and went to Ava for haircuts. Sadly, Ava moved to Hawaii. I haven't dyed my hair since 2008. That's 8 years!! During those 8 years, I've donated my hair 3 times. I wanted a subtle change. Nothing dramatic like how I used to have because I'm older and work in a professional environment. I went for blue black. One of my friends works at Van Michael and dyes hair. She recommended me to take advantage of the students at Van Michael at the Buckhead salon. However, they were only available to do so on Monday's at 11 am, 3 pm, or 5 pm. I was cool with it. I mean, it's cheaper and I'm saving a lot. She got me in touch with Cade to dye my hair. Through text messages for several weeks, I got an appointment that fit with my schedule. Everyone at Van Michael was sweet. Since they are students, you have to be patient with them, they are still learning. I just played on my phone so the wait wasn't that bad. After several hours, I was done. Cade did a great job with the color! I also loved the way he blowdried my hair out. My hair looks so healthy and shiny. He was too sweet and gave me a hug. He even took a picture of my hair outside so I could see the blue black. He deserved more than 20% tip and I gave that to him. I plan to take my daughter to get her hair dyed there by Cade. read more

Not really sure why there are some negative reviews complaining about the atmosphere on here... I personally really love the atmosphere and the customer service is fantastic. I didn't even book an appointment until I visited! You are given your choice of beverage, a protective bag for your purse, dressing rooms to change and save your clothes (I've had many shirts that have been bleached during an appts at other salons; so annoying), everyone is very kind, and it's very chic. You feel like you're in a high-fashion designer store, high paced music, edgy people walking around, great lighting, etc. I get if you're not into that scene, but if I'm shelling out a good bit of money for a chic hair styling, I want it to feel luxurious and chic around me. Personal preference? So, I recently got my hair colored by CJ. He was fantastic and listened to all my requests! I wanted to get away from a golden blonde / brownish-brassy look and move into a cooler, beach blonde look like I had while living on the beach. I've had trouble getting there, and he finally got it!!! I love my hair, and he made my experience so nice and relaxing. He used lavender essential oil to relax my neck and shoulders right before he started working (which was great because I had a very long day) and stayed until 9:30pm to make sure I was looking perfect! He is a talented stylist, a super nice and personable person to talk to, and he takes pride in his work. I would recommend him to anyone, and I am very picky about my hair. I moved from NJ with a head full of tape in extensions and was in an urgent need of retaping. My salon in NJ recommended Van Michael and I called them. Somehow I got connected to Harry Wood and he knew exactly what I was talking about! Within an hour he accommodated me and took a quick look at my hair and sent me off for shampoo. Before placing the extensions in my head, I asked if he was going to feel my skull bones to know where they should go? And he said, oh I know. Within 20 minutes, he placed those extensions back where they belong. He also gave me the quickest haircut ever which looks amazing! In and out time: 40 minutes. Frequent customer for about 4years. I've had several colorists and most of them know what they do. Professional, friendly, and nice customer care. I normally have color single process with Olaplex and other spray hair treatments along. With a new talent, these cost $95 total. I have a sensitive scalp and wanted to use natural Aveda color products that work well for my condition. For a few years, I always have a pleasant experience. Receptionists are always nice to help me well, complimentary water or coffee is a good thing, clean and chic interior of the salon is also nice. Also, I've had advantages of Customer Appreciation day of this salon to buy Aveda products 20% off and received complimentary gifts like beach towels, full size body shampoo, aroma candle and etc. Sometimes, I got extra bonus points for Aveda reward by just doing hair color. Since I'm favored of Aveda products, being a customoer of this salon give me a huge benefit. So I gave this place two chances. First time with a new colorist and second time with a master colorist. I just moved to Atlanta area from NYC and have been looking for a solid place for cut and color. Van Michael has the look, it has the equipment, it has that edgy urban feel where you think you will walk looking too notch. But unfortunately it lacks talent. Both times I left feeling disappointed. First visit my hair was left with streaky blond highlights and second time the mark was completely missed with the color. I could even tell by the look on the colorists face. I'm very thorough so I didn't took all the guess work out by brining pictures and describing exactly what I wanted. The end result was not the picture I showed. I said nothing, tipped very kindly and walked out. I had to right this review because this place is just a factory. In you go and out you come. Hit or miss at best. Coloring hair is an art. Unfortunately no Picasso's being painted in this place, at least not in my two experiences. I hope to find a colorist where talent, skill, and experience are fused together for great results. Harry Wood is phenomenal! I am going through chemo therapy for breast cancer so I knew I would be losing my hair. Harry was recommended to me through back to you.org to assist in purchasing a wig. He consulted with me, selected a wig, styled it and then waited for me call his personal cell#. Today was the day. He was so compassionate, thoughtful and caring, taking his time to explain everything. I look terrific - very much like myself only with perfect hair . This was my first time at Van Michael's, and the salon was definitely way bigger than I thought. The price was so much lower than anywhere else I've been to, and yet the luxury service and quality was incredible! If anything, go for the complimentary neck and arm massages, it's amazing. I know what you want to hear. That if you come here, you're going to have a perfect experience and no one will screw up your hair. The truth is, that just like dentists, you're going to have to do some experimenting to find a stylist that you jive with. Luckily, this location of Van Michaels has a BUNCH of colorists and stylists, which means that you can keep on the merry-go-round until you find someone you like. My problem in finding a solid stylist I can stick with is my bonkers schedule. I frequently travel for business, sometimes last minute, so I can never keep an appointment. I've got to have the flexibility to call up a salon a few days (....okay, sometimes day-of) before I need an appointment. Because of the huge size of this salon, it was possible. So that's a plus here. I also like that Van Michael uses Aveda products. Finally, they follow some of the Aveda salon practices like making sure each client gets a de-stressing ritual. Here are the things I didn't like. The salon is huge and bustling with people, it almost seems frantic. I prefer a calming experience rather than feeling like I'm on a New York City sidewalk in salon. The New Talents waiting area was small, so I had to stand while waiting for my appointment. I didn't have a great experience with my colorist or my stylist. I showed my colorist a photo of the red color I wanted (a strawberry-blonde-ish color) and specifically explained that my normal colorist had been leaving me with a dark, auburn-like color and I really wanted a lighter version of red. She was super nice and pleasant, but I still ended up with the same dark brown-ish red. Boo. So here's my thing: if I need to do a different treatment (double process, highlights, what?) to get the results I want, I wish she would advise me on that up-front to set the expectation that I'd been getting the exact result I didn't want because I'm not getting the right treatment. I like my hair color, it's just not what I requested. As for my stylist. She was also very nice and professional, and gave me the shape I wanted. However, I specifically explained that I am growing my hair out long for my wedding in a few months and did not want any length taken off. She showed me my ends, that are clearly unhealthy, and mentions that I should take a little bit of length off. I asked her to please, only trim the ends, less than a inch or half an inch if possible. Because...I am growing my hair for my wedding. At the end of the day, I'm pretty sure about 2-3 inches are gone from my ends. She made a point to show me how much healthier my ends are. And frankly, this is normally how much I'd get taken off for that exact reason. But that's not what I asked for, and I'm disappointed the stylist went against my wishes. She was also pretty pushy with products. I'm glad I'm well stocked with all the Aveda products so I could decline without guilt. All the receptionist staff I encountered seemed a little...snooty? Or possibly bored, annoyed, or something else? I didn't get a friendly, pleasant vibe from anyone. I also wasn't even offered the chance to re-book, which I thought was odd, mostly because I would have if it had been offered, but I was put-off so I didn't inquire. Oh, and parking was a complete nightmare for me. The lot up top was full, so I went down into the deck, where tons of people are fighting for spots (mostly Whole Foods customers). Look for the orange cones that are blocking spots off specifically for Van Michaels salon. I thought they were for a valet so I ignored them. I won't be returning to this location. Instead, I'm going to go back to my regular VM salon in Midtown, which is much smaller and has a more homey vibe between all the stylists and colorists and clients that I like. read more
