matcha latte with oat milk to go
    Nat L.

googled matcha near me and it suggested vanlove sushi. ukrainian style sushi, a fusion of japanese rolls with ukrainian flavours. rooting for immigrant owners trying to start a business in a new city, in these tough times, the hard work, vision, and sacrifice behind every detail is inspiring. there's courage in every decision, and a quiet hope in trying something new. vanlove is more than a restaurant, it's a community. ukrainian flags decorate the space, a reminder of home and heritage, and the team actively donates to help children of fallen heroes. it's about doing good, spreading love, and creating a place where small acts ripple into something meaningful. the mission gives weight to every dish, every latte, every interaction. the interior is clean and modern, with natural wood tones on the lower walls and a striking wooden world map puzzle mounted on a white concrete pillar with a 'buy me, only $149 cad' tag. the map adds a warm, artisanal touch, a subtle nod to the global fusion concept blending japanese and ukrainian cultures in vancouver. the space feels inviting yet minimalist, with quiet personality in its details. i ordered a matcha latte with oat milk to go. watched as the barista hand whisked the matcha in a disposable paper cup, and immediately had that sinking feeling it wasn't going to be good. no ceramic bowl, no slow pour, just a quick whisk and a lid. surprisingly, it came topped with a pizzelle, a thin, laced italian cookie, balanced over the lid like a garnish, or perhaps to cover the absence of latte art. my instinct was right. gritty, thin, chalky, and not good. to be fair, i only had a matcha latte with oat milk, no food. i wanted to vanlove this place, but i didn't. still, i can admire the effort, the courage, the hope, and the heart it takes to open a small business as a newcomer in a tough economy, in an expensive city, while giving back to the community. some days aren't perfect, but they're still worth walking through, for the light, the air, the quiet rhythm of a city moving around you, and for the reminder that even small acts of love and courage matter.

Summary: Horrible Ukrainian-style sushi, 30+min wait for 1 warm salmon avocado roll. Very friendly service, but very bad sushi. If you're into food court-level or below "sushi" then this is the place for you! To be fair, upon reading the Google reviews it says it's Ukrainian-style sushi, whatever that means, so take that into consideration before you proceed with my review, which I'm basing off my experience eating regular umm Japanese-style sushi. They also sell coffee, tea, mojito, smoothies, desserts, croissants and milkshakes, which was a bit concerning to me as a sushi restaurant.... Honestly, I was thinking about walking out after looking at the menu, but the server was friendly and already served us water, so I decided to at least order one item. FOOD REVIEW: Avocado and Salmon Roll $7.99 for 8pcs -The salmon sashimi was WARM -Relatively small roll, lots of rice -Sesame seeds did not taste fresh -No soy sauce dish, so I guess the way to eat it is to pour soy sauce on the plate directly? So it soaks into the sushi? -Wasabi and ginger on the side THE WAIT: Waited 30minutes for ONE roll. Sat down at 7:11pm, and got the roll at 7:42pm. I went in a Friday night for dinner and there were 3 other tables. Oner person came in for a take out order.

Interesting take on sushi. This cafe offers Ukrainian style sushi, coffee and tea, and desserts. Basically a coffee shop with sushi. Lots of Ukrainian spirit in the decoration. They've curated a nice environment with the Ukrainian stuff and the thoughtful place settings. What I got: Black dragon roll: The most obvious distinguishing factor between this and regular sushi is that the bbq salmon topping was cooked. It was different, but I liked the different texture and smoky flavour that this gave the roll. Aside from the cooked salmon, it was a standard but good unagi roll. Presentation was nice. Salted caramel cake: Chocolate mousse on a sponge cake base with salted caramel in the centre. Kind of a unique dessert; the caramel centre was a pleasant surprise. Light and fluffy mousse. Iced matcha latte: So, they have a separate menu for hot drinks and cold drinks, and matcha was only on the hot list, but it was something like 28° out (this is a delayed review from summer) and I wanted matcha, so I asked if they could do it iced. The person at the counter seemed unsure but said he would try, and it came out great. Decent quality matcha prepared well. The person taking my order was very stoic, but this came across as probably a language or cultural barrier rather than unfriendliness. Prices are steep even if the rolls are large, which is my only criticism. Good experience overall. It was interesting to try their take on sushi.

Not only was the sushi impeccable, the vibes were fuego. Highly recommend. Will comeback to Vancouver just for this bodega.

The miso soup was unusually good with sesame seeds added. We had two rolls both fresh and delicious. And edamame perfectly seasoned. The service was friendly and fast. We really enjoyed this place. I recommend.

My friends and I were craving for sushi and we came across VanLove Coffee, so we decided to give it a try. We ordered the party tray for 3 people, and it fed our group of 4 well, leaving everyone full. The sushi was fresh and yummy, and we got complimentary lemon ginger tea. The waitress was so sweet and the overall experience was great.

    Ultimate tray!

    Rainbow Roll at VanLove Sushi.

We wanted to try VanLove because of the reviews and to show some support for Ukraine. The restaurant is small but nicely decorated and very clean and bright interior. There are a few tables outside as well. You order and pay at the counter and then take a seat at one of the tables and your order will be delivered to you. The woman who served us was very helpful and friendly. The special rolls are a good size and the two of us shared two and an order of veggie tempura and that made a good lunch. The VanLove roll is the specialty of the house and I highly recommend. The Rainbow roll was also delicious.

Avocado roll, Miso soup and Green tea and ice water.

Absolutely the best service and affordable prices, the Miso soup with green onions and the avocado roll was very delicious , they also brought ice water and choice of tea. Highly Recommended!

They have special party trays that are both beautiful and delicious

Beautiful and peaceful environment. Delicious food and kind and smiling hosts.I totally recommend this place and I will definitely come back. They have a special drink called Saffron Ice Cube Latte, be sure to try it. This is the most unique drink.

Tasty and fresh. The waitress was very nice and attentive, even though she was the only one at the front of the house. Their coffee and tea were ok, I wouldn't order their drinks next time, but I would come back for their rolls.

Well it seems ownership has changed and the new owner doesn't give two craps about prior customers, honoring discounts, replying back timely or being more friendly? Was playing email tag and finally submitted the 39 flavors and didn't hear back until after another week and then told they won't deliver only in morning when they know our reservation was for 730pm and they're open until 9? I even replied back and nothing. We own and run several business in lower mainland and in United States and this customer service from Unni Pastries is trash. At least you can do is reply back and apologize? For wasting time when I specifically told you it's for family and friends flying into town for a funeral burial. Will never use their business again. I highly suggest Mello. They replied and helped me out last minute. Shame on you! Learn how to run a business and treat customers esp previous customers who were supporting the business and fellow Krn but it's clear the new owner doesn't care about the customer or quality it's all about quantity. Maybe my 39 donuts which I offered to pay extra for time and packaging wasn't large enough but money is money. Especially during this time and economy. You should've at least replied back and even tried asking us to do pickup as the restaurant is down the road. Do better! Go to Mello which isn't too far and they bake fresh daily better pricing and reviews and consistency!

I'm from the Bay Area and we have our fair share of Japanese grocery stores (shout out to Niiya in Japantown in San Francisco) but I was very excited to see the selection here. They even had Japanese canned drinks stored hot like in Japan! The take away Japanese desserts also looked good. This place is right on Robson street so a great place to grab a snack, drink, pick me up while shopping. Prices seemed reasonable. One caveat is that it can get busy in here and the aisles are small so it felt a little crowded but that's sort of like Japan as well lol so not a big deal for me. Added to the ambience.
