We ordered tea as we were charging the phone and he made us a kettle with lots of fresh ginger and mint. Afterwards, he said it was free! Humankind is filled with goodness. First off, as soon as we walked in the environment was so welcoming! The staff are friendly and warm. They gave our 11 year old a fun Japanese lemonade and joked with us as we were trying to open the bottle. It was a memorable experience for all of us! The food was spectacular as well. Usually, I won't eat sushi unless it's Japanese-run, but this establishment pleasantly surprised me. It is owned by Persians, and the customer service was exceptional. The downside I saw was it took a while to get the food; however, it was well worth the wait. read more

I was very impressed by this charming sushi restaurant at the quiet end of Robson Street. The place bills itself as Ukrainian sushi, but it is in fact, well, sushi. There is a selection of Ukrainian souvenirs available to support the Ukrainian war effort, but beyond that, it's a normal sushi restaurant with some pleasant twists. Unlike many sushi restaurants, the selection of different types of fish is somewhat limited. Most of the dishes focus on tuna, salmon, or shrimp but they're combined in interesting and tasty ways. Note that the menu has been expanded from anything that I found online. It's now much more polished and has more offerings, including not just sushi but also coffees and desserts. The combo offerings for lunch are a particularly good deal. They include a very tasty miso soup with the interesting addition of sesame seeds and your choice of many different flavors of hot tea. We tried both the orange and the mint teas, and they were both delicious. The two combos we tried both came with four pieces of nigiri consisting of tuna, shrimp, and salmon, and then an eight-piece roll selection. One included the BC roll which is similar to a California roll but incorporates cooked salmon. The other was my favorite. It was a spicy salmon roll which had the interesting presentation of placing the spicy salmon mixture on top of each slice of a roll similar to a California roll. This provided a generous helping of the spicy salmon which was very nicely seasoned and just the right spice level. The service was extremely friendly and helpful. Our leftovers were packed up in a very delightful looking to-go box, and we were even given cups to take the rest of our hot tea with us. Interesting take on sushi. This cafe offers Ukrainian style sushi, coffee and tea, and desserts. Basically a coffee shop with sushi. Lots of Ukrainian spirit in the decoration. They've curated a nice environment with the Ukrainian stuff and the thoughtful place settings. What I got: Black dragon roll: The most obvious distinguishing factor between this and regular sushi is that the bbq salmon topping was cooked. It was different, but I liked the different texture and smoky flavour that this gave the roll. Aside from the cooked salmon, it was a standard but good unagi roll. Presentation was nice. Salted caramel cake: Chocolate mousse on a sponge cake base with salted caramel in the centre. Kind of a unique dessert; the caramel centre was a pleasant surprise. Light and fluffy mousse. Iced matcha latte: So, they have a separate menu for hot drinks and cold drinks, and matcha was only on the hot list, but it was something like 28° out (this is a delayed review from summer) and I wanted matcha, so I asked if they could do it iced. The person at the counter seemed unsure but said he would try, and it came out great. Decent quality matcha prepared well. The person taking my order was very stoic, but this came across as probably a language or cultural barrier rather than unfriendliness. We wanted to try VanLove because of the reviews and to show some support for Ukraine. The restaurant is small but nicely decorated and very clean and bright interior. There are a few tables outside as well. You order and pay at the counter and then take a seat at one of the tables and your order will be delivered to you. The woman who served us was very helpful and friendly. The special rolls are a good size and the two of us shared two and an order of veggie tempura and that made a good lunch. The VanLove roll is the specialty of the house and I highly recommend. The Rainbow roll was also delicious. read more

In a city full of 'western fusion sushi', so basically the stuff you'd never see in Japan, here's another one. I hoped for Ukranian sushi. I've had lots of great Ukranian food, I was looking forward to seeing what would set this apart from the low bar of standard Westerner sushi.... but it was simply more of the same. A usual rule of thumb for ethnic food is to look for the matching ethnic group as customers. A Chinese or Mexican joint with zero Chinese or Mexican customers is a real red flag. Would you eat Indian Curry made by Steve, with no Indian customers? Guess how many Japanese people were in here? And I don't just mean the kitchen staff. As for the food, I thought the best safeway tier sushi I had ever had was at safeway, but I guess it was here. In a city full of California and Philli rolls- sure the next thing we needed was another place making the same, but with even less Japanese rice (the base of sushi), and options. Starbucks lemon loaf with costco ice cream, yeah let's pair this with dry sushi, great idea. I wish all new businesses the best, I just wish all new businesses tried to be the best. I can't tell if this place is owned by stripmall sushi, or just wants to be the owner of strip mall sushi? And to emphasize gender rules on Instagram, which I only noticed after we ordered.... that's a little weird in 2023. Bold move I guess. Added an extra star for being bold.
