We have been going to Vecchia for years & it never disappoints us. It is cozy in winter & delightful outdoor seating in the warm seasons. The specials are exquisite. We had something we have never had at any restaurant anywhere even when my husband and I lived in Manhattan. The dish was a four cheese ravioli in a basil pesto cream sauce with mussels in the shell. This is not good food. Very disappointing after reading so many positive reviews. Warm space and friendly, attentive staff, but my goodness is this unappetizing food. Place was packed. Good for them. Big plates of inelegant, mediocre slop. The arugula salad was fresh and dressed nicely. It all went downhill after that. Pasta was mushy and laden with acidic tomato sauce. Mushy eggplant. Gnocchi with the consistency of mashed potatoes. Canned peas on the side. Craaaaazy salty sausage. Just unbalanced and heavy-handed food. We celebrated a family event with 12 people. The reservation time was honored, and everyone got to order off the menu. We asked the server if we could substitute pasta for the vegetable of the day. She said, for an upcharge we could do that, but I think the charge was $6, and that was too much to add onto our meal, so we then asked what the vegetable was, and she said she didn't know. However, she didn't bother to find out. My husband's chicken parm was excellent, except the vegetable of the day turned out to be potatoes, which doesn't really go with such a heavy meal. When his meal was delivered, the person doing the delivery yelled out, "Who has the parm?" We inquired what kind of parm and she said she had no idea because she hadn't taken our order. It could have been eggplant, veal or chicken, and easily someone elses meal. Luckily it was the chicken parm that she handed to my husband. I had a nice meal of salmon with spinach. It was very good. The bathroom situation was ridiculous. I have no idea how many people were in the total restaurant, but our room had three tables of at least 12, and the general restaurant was much larger. There were two bathrooms! I am not sure if that would be up to code, but let's face it, after a big meal, you just "gotta go" and standing in line for an unreasonably long time was just too long for me. After watching several men enter and leave the bathroom, I opted for using the men's room. Two bathrooms should have been for anyone to use. Had the waitress been more helpful, had the server been more helpful, and had the bathrooms been more adequate, I would have rated this 4 stars, but until the attitudes change, a 3 star it will remain. read more

Amazing restaurant - my first time here, and so glad to find this gem. Family-owned, warm atmosphere, food was great - so fresh - REAL Italian food, not what we've gotten used to in the US (heavy sauces, etc). We came to celebrate my birthday, and on a Wednesday night, the place was packed. The owners make you feel welcome as soon as you walk in the door, and our waitress was very attentive and made some great recommendations when we couldn't decide between all the delicious-sounding options. I doubt you can go wrong with anything, but I can vouch for: the (special that night) Lasagna, roasted red peppers, gorgonzola and crab meat app, veal chop with mushroom risotto, zucchini blossoms with parmesan and truffle oil (omg) and more. They must make their own desserts (or I'd like to find out which bakery made them) - for my birthday "cake" they sent a platter all sorts of deliciousness -- cannolis, tiramisu, etc. I've never been a huge fan of cannolis, but the texture of the shells was the best I've ever had -- light, not chewy, perfectly flavored, yum. Had an amazing dinner here two weeks ago! Sat outside in a lovely garden area. Ate some of the biggest calamari over ever seen, and thoroughly enjoyed the long hot peppers wrapped in prosciutto. Ate a pasta dish (I forget the name) that had an incredible white wine sauce. Also, got to meet and talk to the owner, Pasquale, at length. He's an incredibly nice man and fun to talk to! Vecchia Osteria made me feel like I was traveling back in time to a restaurant in the countryside of Italy. When you're first seated, you're given complimentary bruschetta (yum!) and bread. The service was prompt and our waitress was very accommodating and friendly. I ordered the Rigatoni Osteria. The texture of the pasta was outstanding and they sauce was very creamy. I feel compelled to write a review for this restaurant due to a very poor experience. It wasn't that the food was terrible, it was the service. Allow me to explain. My fiance and I went with a group of people to have a nice authentic Italian dinner. My fiance ordered the gnocchi dish and everyone else ordered their own respective meals. When the food was served we were all excited to dig in. Except my fiance of course. As the waiter put the plate full of pasta down in front of my fiance, he informed us "We were out of gnocchi, so we substituted for ________ (insert random pasta that is not even on the same wave length as gnocchi)." My fiance was shocked, as was I, that the waiter did not tell us sooner. Had he been told immediately (before all the food was cooked and served!!!), he would've chosen a different dish. What my fiance wound up with was plain old pasta with red spaghetti sauce. We could have made that at home just as good and we would've been spared the aggravation. At this point, my fiance was starving and did not want to order another dish since everyone else had started eating. He would've had to wait at least 15 min to receive something else and by that time, we all would've been finished our dishes. So my fiance began eating the dish. Eventually the waiter came back to check on us and that's when we told him we were not happy. Then he sends the manager out. The manager had the audacity to say to my fiance, "You should have told me immediately." Have your staff take your advice, sir. They did take his meal off of the bill but that was not enough for me. All we wanted was a delicious satisfying dinner and good service. My dinner was good but it wasn't amazing and I could definitely get it just as good if not better somewhere else. Please don't tell anyone how much I loved this place. Shh It's better than anyplace I've been to in Little Italy. Shh We came here early as a party of 8 with no reservation on a Saturday. They were obviously booked for the night but the hostess looked at us (she probably could tell my yelp status) and told us that if we could be out of there in 55 minutes then she could get us a table. I'm not sure where all of the good reviews are coming from for this restaurant. In my opinion, the only thing it has going for it is that it's BYOB. To begin with, the service staff is astoundingly rude. When we arrived, two hostesses were talking with each other as we waited like idiots by the front door. Finally one of those women decided to end her conversation with the other server and seated us. Once we were seated, we had no clue who our server was for a good 15 minutes. Then to really put the cherry on top, after we finished our appetizer the bus girl came over to clear our plates and my wife's used knife was still on her plate. Normally, we are absolutely fine when restaurants ask us to keep the same silverware throughout a meal. But without an explanation, or even a smile, the bus girl just tilted the plate at an angle and let the used knife fall back onto the table from a few inches up. We've been to restaurants all over the world and have never seen that happen before. On top of the bad service, the place just seems dirty and run-down. I can only imagine what it looks like in the kitchen. And lastly: the food. It is mediocre at best, uninspired and unpalatable at worst. The bread they serve is basically cheap, stale white bread. We ordered a meat and cheese platter for an appetizer. When it arrived, my wife and I looked at each other and had no idea what it was supposed to be. It was four little pieces of meat and some shaved parmigiana thrown on a plate--this plate was an embarrassment for $10. Then our pasta dishes arrived. Both dishes had a weird chalky texture to them. It was almost as if they've been cooking the pasta in old, dirty water. We couldn't exactly put our fingers on it, but neither of us finished our plates. We will never be coming back to this terrible restaurant. There are too many other solid Italian options in the area (La Stalla) with friendly, hard-working staff. read more

Our group of 25 senior ladies had a reservation to eat outside at this restaurant. The owner, Anna, told our organizer that we would be seated at tables of 4 each and we could choose from the menu as long as we paid cash. A phone call 2 days before our reservation confirmed that we were "in the book". When all 25 of us arrived, we were told by Anna that we were not in the book and the chef came out to say he could give us family style chicken Parmesan for $40.00 each not including tax, tip and drinks or dessert. After many minutes of negotiating, our organizer agreed that we would accept chicken sorry to family style along with a Caesar salad and penne dish, again all family style. The salad and penne dishes were good, especially the penne sauce, but the chicken was so thin it was hard to even see it and several pieces had no chicken and was just breading and cheese. Needless to say, it was sad to think a restaurant with such a good reputation would not honor a reservation and then try to get the clients to pay $40.00 for a dish that was listed as $17.00 on the menu. I wish I ate at the same place many of the other reviewers ate here. Vecchia Osteria falls completely short on the 24 of August 2013. Restaurant was quite crowded so I figured something had to be good. Service was flat out abysmal from start to finish. Our waiter could never be found and our water glasses were consistently empty. The worst part about the service was between the salad/apps and the entree was 40 FORTY minutes. Not once did he come to our table at that time. As for the food, we went with the specials. Both were mixed shellfish over risotto. Clams and mussels were entirely overcooked while the risotto was mushy and wet. The arugula salad was decent while the rustica mixed cheese and meets was average. Price was $84 pre-tip. Maybe we ordered the wrong thing but there was no excuse for the service. After we observed meals going back from other tables, I knew something was up. read more

I've visited this BYOB a few times now, and each time is as remarkable as the first. They are always busy, but always accommodating. Let's start with the service, as this can make or break the dining experience. The servers are all extremely knowledgeable, polite, and attentive. They will do everything they can to ensure that you have an excellent dining experience. The Chef, Pasquale, even visits the tables to make sure everything is as you requested. Moving onto the food... every single thing I have eaten in this restaurant has been delicious. Over the weekend, my fiance decided to be a bit daring and ordered the Antelope (which was a special that day). I expected the meat to be gamey, regardless of how well it had been cooked. When the dish arrived it looked, and tasted, like Filet Mignon. I was extremely impressed. I cannot even begin to recommend a specific dish, as I am sure they are all wonderful. The food is an absolute pleasure - whether you order a la carte, specials from the menu, or partake of a banquet feast. I have tried it all: but I cannot possibly go through each appetizer or entrée, singing the chef's praises. My faves: calamari fritti [always fresh, perfectly balanced between the crunchy outside and a tender squid]; seafood salad [abundant assortment of seafood over fresh arugula with a perfect vinaigrette dressing]; the whole braised fish literally melts in your mouth - succulent, delicious; and the absolute worth-the-wait dish: lamb chops. They are heavenly, and done right every single time. Every other dish I tried over the last two years, or my family and friends enjoyed - not a single negative comment or bad experience. Best thing - BYOB, so you don't overpay for wine & drinks. Also, the patio in the warm weather: so relaxing. Honestly, I think the company I was with is why this place is getting 4 starts more than anything else. I had a great time! Based on what people have told me about Vecchia and all the reviews, I had very high hopes and high standards for my meal. For me, my favorite South Philly spots are still number one but I was very happy with my meal here with that aside. I had the Veal Osteria (Vitello Osteria) and it did not disappoint from a recommendation from our very nice waiter. We had a few other dishes, and in particular the guests who had the Chicken Osteria, and eggplant rollatini were happy with their choices. I think my only qualm was the obnoxiously loud Italian pop music playing behind us since we were right by a speaker. I know it's cliché, but give me some Dean Martin or at least some classical Italian music. Keep the pop music away. It was a little much. Haha. Very enjoyable and worth a trip in Newtown! read more

A number of people told me about this restaurant. Each conversation went something like this, "We found a gem of an Italian restaurant hidden in Newtown!" Finally I decided I needed to check the place out so I grabbed my sister and we headed out last night to see what all the fuss was about. The place is hidden! I probably drove by it a 100 times and never once noticed it. We walked in and we were greeted by I think the owner. He immediately showed us to a table outside... they have a gorgeous outside garden area. There were some leaves on our table from the towering tree right next door. He apologized and gave us a free antipasto! This blew me away especially because the leaves didn't bother me one bit. My sister ordered the Fusilli alla Polpa di Granchio onions, jumbo lump crab meat, cherry tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, touch of hot pepper in a pink cream sauce. IT WAS AMAZING!! (I forced her to split it with me!) I ordered the Penne Toscana vidalia onions, grape tomatoes and ricotta salata in marinara sauce. It didn't blow me away but I think it was my fault for ordering something rather plain. The meal came to an even $30 which I thought was reasonable for the quality and ambiance. heard great things about this place so I finally got a chance to try it. We ordered the Caprese appetizer, which had lots of olives and fresh tomatoes and mozzarella, very nice to start with. I ordered a special that night, a NY strip steak topped with gorgonzola and lobster. It was absolutely amazing! My girlfriend needs to eat gluten free and the waiter was very accommodating with this. She tried the Pollo Osteria and this was equally delicious with lots of melted mozzarella on it. It's BYOB so we brought a bottle of wine and had a fabulous meal! I recently had the good luck to attend a family celebration held here, and can only say "bravissimo"! Everything about Vecchia Osteria has a warm, tasteful Italian sensibility - the design, the indoor patio and the outdoor terrace, the carved wood ceiling. The feast was superb - from fried calimari and superb bread which our pleasant Neapolitan waiter said came from Brooklyn, to the veal saltimbocca, chicken parm, rigattoni with cherry tomatoes, white noodles, broccoli, salad, and superb variety of desserts -- all served with quiet and thoughtful regard for our family. My only regret is that Pasquale and his family seem happy here in PA, when Florida would be so happy were they to open such a place there. read more
