Vegan is not my favorite cuisine, but since three of the five in our party are vegans, we didn't have much choice. Fortunately, there are McDonald's nearby if I have to supplement. Still, the food was tasty. I had the Classic Burger with a side of sweet potato fries. It wasn't bad at all. I also had some chocolate chip cookies for dessert, which were quite tasty. One of my nieces had the kale Caesar salad, don't ask me why. Another had the buffalo wings. My brother had the turkey sandwich and his husband had the masala curry bowl. Everyone was happy with their selections. For dinner for five, the price wasn't all that bad. With tip and drinks (non-alcoholic) we got out at just over $118. Considering that this is Los Angeles, the prices aren't out of line. If I'm back in town and I have to eat with a vegan, I would come here again. If I'm back in town and I get to pick the restaurant, it will serve meat. But that's just my preference. read more

This has become one of my go to vegan restaurants, I used to not think it was all that great but it seems like veggie grill has made a lot of improvements in the food and flavors, as well as offering points and email offers, and creating new and interesting dishes. I really enjoy the bowls and the salads, but have yet to try most of the other Mexican choices. Overall it's pretty affordable and the customer service here is super friendly. There are several things that make my heart go pitter-patter: books, animals, anything vintage, nature, and... vegetables. That's right! Want me to become weak in the knees? That road is lined with produce, baby! The appearance, the taste, the growing process; it is all fascinating! Since the moment Veggie Grill hit the eatery scene; I was locked-in. A plant-based menu with gluten-free and vegan options? Check. Fresh, seasonal and local ingredients? Check. Affordable prices? Checkmate. As a frequent guest at the Encino Veggie Grill location, I was quite pleased when a Veggie Grill opened closer to my 'hood. This Veggie Grill location is hunkered down in the Burbank/Toluca Lake neighborhood at the corner of Riverside/Alameda basically across the street from the famous Bob's Big Boy. This means you can't miss it (Veggie Grill also has large signage) even though the actual square footage of the corner retail space is quite small (the building has seen many incarnations, most recently as a Umami Burger brand Hot Dog stand - hopefully Veggie Grill is here to stay). Veggie Grill doesn't feature too many bells and whistles at this location and instead opts for clean white-washed lines and muted tones. The order area is quite spacious in contrast to the overall small space and won't cause any awkward meetings with strangers. This review is unfortunately being penned during the ending** of the world (Coronavirus pandemic), California lockdown, and when all restaurants are either closed or had to convert into a takeout/delivery model. For this reason, my dining partner and I opted for phoning in our dinner order and picking up for our Veggie Grill dinner. For my meal, I went with the Paleo Zucchini Noodles w/ Beyond Sausage as I am gluten free (zucchini noodles, Beyond spicy italian sausage crumble, basil pesto, roasted tomatoes, shredded Parmesan) while my dining partner chose the Masala Bowl (chana masala (spiced chickpeas), turmeric roasted cauliflower, quinoa, braised kale, hemp seeds, cilantro/green curry sauce, raita, served with grilled garlic flatbread.) I also chose a cup of the Moroccan Lentil Soup (GF) to be eaten the next day. The order-taker on the phone was pleasant, calm, and assured us that our food would be ready in as fast as 15 minutes! Wowza! Upon arrival, we were instantly welcomed with a smile by the female associate behind the counter who maintained a fresh, calming air despite what feels like the end of mankind happening around us. She did a great job. We grabbed a couple drinks and left with our food that was cleanly and tidily packed in a brown Veggie Grill bag: no smashed or spilled food here! So, how was the food, you ask? The appearance of my Zucchini Noodle Bowl was beautiful: bright colors and fresh, ample amount of ingredients that Veggie Grill did not skimp on, and it looked EXACTLY like the menu photo which is a RARE occurrence! But you know what they DID skimp on? The actual content of the bowl which was barely above the halfway point meanwhile the Masala Bowl was almost overflowing the edges! What the heck is up with that inconsistency?! I got jipped! However, the actual flavors were delicious, vibrant, and were a symphony on my taste buds. The zucchini 'noodles' were slightly too thick and the bowl was a bit to oily (I'm talking oil pooling at the bottom); but otherwise tasty. The overflowing Masala Bowl was one-toned in color and could have used some fresh pops (even the kale wasn't enough) but the texture was ideal and not mushy in any way while the notes of warm spices were cooled with the curry sauce and the side of tzakiti sauce. I would say it tasted more Moroccan than Indian, but great either way. As for the Moroccan Lentil Soup, the lovely, bright burnt sienna color was supplemented with a puree of lentils and a delightful broth. Even the next day, the quality was superb. If you want to make this perfect, add some salt and touch of distilled vinegar and you are transported to Morocco! The highlight of Veggie Grill is that the the food doesn't leave you feeling heavy or bloated and is pseudo-healthy (much healthier than other fast-casual spots). Despite Coronavirus trying to ruin our lives; Veggie Grill came through with terrific customer service, satisfying food (even if my bowl was obviously not filled properly), fast preparation, and manageable prices. It's nice that they are quick and plant based. They used to offer jackfruit as one of the "meats" and it was tasty but it's no longer on the menu. Sometimes they roll the burritos the wrong way and you end up with all of one ingredient on the bottom and non on top. It's a very basic menu. We used to go once a week but the quality has gone down these past five visits so we don't plan to go very often anymore. We both ordered the Ranchero bowl, which was filled with yummy, colorful ingredients that went perfectly together. The small pieces of chopped mango and the dressing made this dish irresistible. Found myself here to support my vegan wife. I grabbed the VG burger with a side of "roasted" broccoli. My wife grabbed the fish tacos and a side of mac and cheese. The VG burger, from a meat eaters perspective, was actually pretty good. Texture is half the battle and they do well there. My wife also let me try her fish tacos and I must admit, if I didn't know any better, I likely wouldn't notice a huge difference from the actual thing. They nail the pico de gallo. The sides really fail here, and if I was absolutely certain I was being unbiased, my rating would be 3 stars. The broccoli was not roasted, and it tasted like they put raw garlic on the broccoli. If I can make better broccoli at home we have a problem. The Mac and cheese was bland, and has a strange taste that neither of us could get over. We ordered take-out from Veggie Grill one day at work, and my hope is that everyone disliked it as much as I did, and that we remove it from our rotation going forward. It's definitely true that I'm not the target customer for this vegetarian chain, but it's also true that I enjoy vegetables when they're well prepared. I am of the opinion that Veggie Grill should be better at making vegetables. I'm generally suspicious of fake meats, so I went for the masala bowl, a hearty-sounding bowl with chana masala, turmeric-roasted cauliflower, avocado, supergrains, steamed kale, hemp seeds, cilantro green curry sauce, and raita. The spiced chickpeas were okay--at least they were sort of flavorful--but the cauliflower was gross and woody, and the kale was plain and raw, or at least plain and raw enough that I didn't want to eat more than one bite. I ended up throwing most of this bowl away. The ultimate diet lunch, I guess. Look, I understand that it's good to eat healthy and that a wealth of vegan/vegetarian options can be a great thing. But I've eaten too much vegetarian Korean peasant food over the years to be impressed by a flavorless bowl of ill-cooked cauliflower. If I ever eat Veggie Grill again, it won't be my idea. read more

I opted for their popular Santa Fe Chicken sandwich, sweet potato fries and nachos plus strawberry lemonade- what's not to love? This is an omnivore-accessible restaurant that recreates typically meat-based options like buffalo wings into vegan ones. A solid option for a fast-casual lunch or dinner, plus they have an app that routinely offers special deals. Prices are fairly standard and they offer seasonal menu specials so you'll never be bored. Seating options were good with several long and two person tables you could easily combine, with some outdoor seating as well facing Riverside drive. Parking- there is a small lot, but they were doing road construction on the side street so I opted for nearby street parking (free for 2 hours). Pay attention to the signs as the residential areas have signs saying no parking from 7 am to 8 pm unless you have a permit. Same tiny 7 car parking lot, don't bother trying to snag a spot here, and drive in the neighborhoods (but watch for the signs, a lot of permit parking near here.) Busy but friendly employees. Not a ton of seating currently, I think they're still working on the outdoor space, which will really open up the area. Ordering, no problem. Managed to snag a table, after cleaning it off myself. Fine, I don't mind, the place is busy. I'm here for the food. After all the Impossible Burger, Beyond Burger, etc stuff I'm happy to introduce more vegan foods into my diet. I wanted to take a chance on the Nashville style chickin sandwich, with a side of the corn bisque. Total - $12.40. Some friends ordered the buffalo "wings", fries, and a kale salad. Food was just ok. The "chickin" of the Nashville Sandwich was extremely soy tasting, kinda cold in the middle, not crispy, not too spicy. Bread was kinda boring supermarket style spongy bread. Slaw was too sweet. Nothing I'd go back for. The corn bisque was very good, served at an appropriate temperature. The bite of buffalo wing I tried was much better than my sandwich, more chicken nugget-y than "wing" like, just a warning. It's like if you were making an after school snack, reheating nuggets from the freezer, stacked on the plate. Fries were pretty good. My friend couldn't finish half her bowl of kale salad, it was drenched in dressing, sloppy and unappealing. She said the presentation of the meal bothered her the most - like a grade school cafeteria. I guess the question is - is it worth the money? The answer from me, is no. So many other restaurants in the area, and if I want to eat vegan I can easily do so now at many other locations with a better price/taste. It's a tough location. Being a vegetarian or vegan is a big pleasure here as you can really choose your meal you want from big veriety and be sure that it's been cooked well and with "positive vibes". I used to order "take away" and enjoy the meal at home. However, there is lots of cost tables inside and out. This restaurant is just on the corner of crowded avenues, but being inside you don't feel it at all. This time I ordered a VG Beyond Burger with avocado and Chicken Sandwich for my BF. I've only tried the Asada burrito a few times at this location. It's very tasty mostly because of the salsa and the fake meat tastes like the real thing. The salsa cups are tiny so you have to keep asking for more. I didn't give 5 stars because a non meat burrito should not cost $13. I may still go back if they adjust their prices. read more

I don't enjoy writing bad restaurant reviews- but I guess I dislike EATING at one even more. tho it seems I am a minority amongst many good reviews, my experience was awful, from the moment I walked in. The layout is ridiculous: a walk thru a long sterile empty hallway to an exactly-like-a-fast-food-counter- then a worker who had no idea if the side order ranchero beans were prepared with garlic or onion. I had to assume they were, so I moved on to the taco menu, because all I wanted was a small bite. Mmm! Mushroom tacos! I LOVE mushrooms so I ordered one of those and one Baja Fish, then somehow found my way thru another sterile empty area to the outdoor space- set oddly far from the cafe. Not very inviting, but OK. Finally- the food arrives and a tin tray is placed in front of me. Two messy looking tacos and some salsa. No utensils. I ask the waiter for a napkin and a fork, and he says OK. I wait, and keep waiting- then I finally go back in traversing the long windy hallways back to the counter and ask for me napkin and fork. By then, I was already disgusted, but unfortunately, went back to my table to eat my tacos. First- the mushroom. To call it a "mushroom" taco is wishful thinking at the best. A soggy corn tortilla filled with sliced tomato, piled with guacamole, and a few small sauteed and very brown button mushroom scattered atop- and all drenched in vinegar. At least the Baja Fish has cabbage slaw, but still the same overwhelming vinegar taste. They were interchangeable, and both mediocre. I had the definite sensation of eating in a low end makeshift college town joint where no one really knows how to cook. And researching this place, I saw that many of their locations are just that: college towns. Riverside Drive in Toluca Lake is something else entirely. I can't believe this place has survived as long as it has, especially when just down the block there's Lemonade, Sweet Greens and Something Vegan. ALL wonderful.
