The best part of the meal were the hush-puppies that they brought out first. The catfish was tough on the outside and mushy on the inside...quite dissappointing after hearing about this place from a trusted family-member and others from my company. I believe that this batch of fish may have been cooked in oil that was too hot maybe (?).....anyway, the fries were soggy and not fresh....I discussed this with one of the afore-mentioned fans and they said this was most-likely an anomoly. I will give them two stars for now and hopefully will have a chance to try them again. PS: I am newly back to Texas as some may know from my reviews over the last year and I really want to know if it would be too much to ask restaurants to use filtered water to make their tea? The tea at this restaurant was also terrible....came out looking cloudy and tasting like dirty dishwater (whatever that tastes like...but you get the pic, right)? The food is nasty! I feel sorry for all you people who think this place is great, I pity you for you don't know what good food is. The food here is disgusting, overall tasteless. The French fries were over cooked, extremely greasy and soggy. Yuck! I asked the waiter if the Cole slaw was the sweet type to what she said "Yes". Well, it was tasteless!!! The fried steak was burnt and it was mostly batter. I mean I feel sorry we threw our money away in this place. Will not be returning. Then the waiter was too busy she couldn't stand by our table to allow me to finish ordering my drink. Also, I known this is a family restaurant but my God it was extremely loud!! I will not be returning. To put it like this: I rather order a $1 taco at a fast food joint than eat this nasty food, and I'm not a fast food person. I have been here twice now and I plan on coming back for more. The first time we came here with friends that had recommended it for lunch after church. I don't remember what everyone else got, but since I had no idea what it was, I ordered the fried quail. Had I known it was a tough, gamey bird, I wouldn't have ordered. I don't blame anyone for that though, I like to think I'll try anything once. Any way, so now I know that quail isn't my thing. The next time we went, I ordered a hamburger steak which was pretty good. I like to put a bit more gravy on mine, so next time I'll remember to ask for extra. My boyfriend ordered the seafood platter which was an array of fried this and that, he seemed happy with it. But I must say, the shining stars of it all were the fried catfish bites we ordered as an appetizer. So friggin delicious!!! The other thing was the tomato relish, which I'd be willing to arm wrestle someone to get the last bite of it. They serve it with hush puppies which are really good! Normally that wouldn't be a big deal, but this is the only place I've ever had that had good hush puppies. I've never had any other ones that I've liked. Our server was really nice and kept out glasses full which was great because we came in from the heat after being outside at the shooting range down the road and were super thirsty. How fast this place has gone down hill. Ate there on April 1, 2012, and the fried catfish was terrible. I mean really bad, as in mushy and smelled fishy. Worst catfish I have ever had. The waitress was embarrassed, and apologized several times. She said they had had many complaints in the past few days. She said that Vernon's had a new "supplier" for their catfish. If this is the problem, they had better ditch them or they won't have any customers left. Words can't describe how bad this "fried catfish" really was. read more

This place always has great food and service. We had the shrimp and catfish. The shrimp were huge and there is always plenty of fish. I love their coleslaw, hush puppies, and tomato relish. This place is the real deal for great food! My wife and I had the fried catfish, French fries, salad, fried okra, and tea. We ordered the small order of catfish which had 3 filets. The filets were fried in peanut oil and were great, not over fried. The salads were a good size and fresh. Then we got a plate of hushpuppies and pickled green tomatoes as a free appetizer. Service was great and fast. This definitely a top catfish place. Of course they have lots of other great dishes on the menu. Great food at a reasonable $22 for two. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! read more

Have lived in Conroe for 22 yrs. and this is our favorite place for fried catfish and chicken fried steak. Food consistently good and we have taken family and friends from out of town many times and they all have loved the food. It is like eating good down home cooking. I am normally very happy with the food I have eaten in the past from here. However, I recently ordered chicken and dumplings to go. When I opened the container, I immediately knew they were not the same as what I've gotten many times before. There were not very many dumplings to begin with and it was heavily laden in what seemed to be cream of chicken soup. In addition, there was no freshly cooked chicken, looked like small bits of canned chicken. I ate very little and within an hour I was nauseated and had to leave my job. Food was very good - Service was wonderful. Vernon's Kuntry Katfish hosted my mother's 97th birthday party and did an incredible job. We had about 45 people, ordered from menus and had many small family groups with separate checks. Our wait staff was amazing patient with the chaos, never complained or made us feel bad for the many checks and general confusion - and they made our 97 year old mother feel like a queen. After calling a month in advance to request the "back room" for a family reunion, and told, "no problem", Sat. June 27th became a problem. The food was delicious and the wait staff were great. However, the "hostess", "manager" or "owner" (whoever she is!) was the rudest and most spiteful person I have ever encountered! She intentionally seated as many customers as she could in the room with us, and even intermingled them between us! She complained that we had not made reservations and because we wanted to sit at smaller tables, instead of one long one and, we used one small table (that seated only 2) to place our photo albums on. As we left (earlier than we had planned, due to too many "outsiders" being seated among us), I counted NINE empty tables in the dining rooms. We will NEVER go back!
